Photographize presents Phôze. Originated by Photographize, Phôze magazine dedicates its space to the passion for monochrome photography. The images chosen affect different kinds of photographic art and are united by a common denominator: black and white. Whether classic, dense and scratchy, painted with light or full of contrast, monochromatic represents the vibrating heart of Phôze. Leafing through these pages you can feel the power of a kind of photography which discovers in the colorless color of black and white the charm of shapes and lines, the roundness of chiaroscuro, the roughness of grain, the suggestion of the scents of a darkroom. Have a good journey towards a timeless Art.

My furniture is mostly grey tones or strictly white, also my kitchen stuf. My clothes arealmost all black too. I just love it in any way. OK, my TV is in colour! Black and white is melancholy and I just love melancholy” He is also shooting bands & portraits for musicians and other artists. GREAT BRITAIN

Lee Jeffries : a British photographer who captures intimate portraits of the homeless that have exploded on social media. His work is most definitely NOT photojournalism. Nor is it intended as portraiture. It's religious or spiritual iconography. It's powerful stuff. Jeffries gives these people something more than personal dignity. He gives a light in their eyes that depicts transcendence, a glimmer of light at the gates of Eden, so to speak. The clarity in their eyes is awesome to behold, as if God is somewhere in there. He has made these people into more than poor old broken homeless people lazily waiting for a handout from some urbane and thoughtful corporate agent. He infuses them with light, not darkness. Even the blind guy has light pouring from his sightless eyes. Jeffries intends his art to honor these people, not pity them. He honors those people by giving their likenesses a greater meaning. He gives them a religious spiritual significance. He imbues them with the iconic soul of humanity. With exhibitions in Rome, Paris and London his images are seen globally and most recently he has worked with Terrence Malick as a contributor to his newly released move, Voyage of Time.

Eric Marrian was born in 1959, he studied Architecture. After hesitating to become a professional photographer after its studies, he finally decided to stop completely photography and, after a pause of fifteen years, at the beginning of the 2000’s, he finally returned back to its first love. In 2003, Eric begins a series on the French marine city, Saint Malo, and after that he started to shoot in Studio. Then, things went very fast: he won the Photography contest of BIEVRES and was published on several occasions by the photographic press. He was invited by the organisers of ‘Le Salon des Artistes Français’ to show its work. End 2005, he started its series ‘Carré Blanc’ in studio. The first images of this series received in 2006 the award of the European Festival of Nude Photography in Arles, France. His series on St Malo was also awarded by the Leica Procirep Dotation. The exhibition which follows at the Gallery Verdeau was a real success. He is then spotted by a Russian Gallery, Gallery 2.36, which acquires the totality of the images existing at that time. Its work will be exhibited, repeatedly in 2008 and in 2009, in Russia. Olga Sviblova programmed him for the biennial of Moscow and dedicates him a space of 400m2. Its series “Carré Blanc” has been since 2008 regularly exhibit in France and abroad (Gallery Verdeau in Paris, ERA Foundation in Moscow, Mostra of Venice-Mestre, Gallery Enora, La MEP/European House of the Photography, Art Elysees 2010, Art Paris 2011). ‘Carré Blanc’ has also been chosen to decorate the lobby of the Parisian Palace ‘The Pershing Hall’. Known and followed by many advertisers (Nikon, Kodak, Leica, Fuji), he impose his eye on the fashion world by signing its first editorials in 2010. In 2011, while continuing to work on "Carré Blanc", he begins a new series in color that is quickly spotted by the press and the galleries that represent them. This series is exhibited for the first time in 2012 by the Young Gallery in Knokke-Le-Zout, Belgium, this exhibition is widely reported by the press National and international. www.marrian.fr 13 05

SWITZERLAND

Born on September 7, 1968, in Sorengo, Switzerland. After having gone in for architectural design, I realized my dream becoming a physical education teacher. During my professional development, I applied myself to photography. Nature offers so many possibilities for compositions. The difficult thing is to chose the composition which - among all - is new in an extraordinary way. An aesthetic and graphic research of nature, where everything seems to have found its right place, where the sense of order seems so well balanced and proportioned that it becomes difficult to distinguish the boundary (if it exists) between human intervention and nature, responsible for itself. Like the choreography of a ballet or a musical composition – everything seems in harmony and gives us a deep feeling of peace and quietness. Order and balance of nature mixed with imperfection and unpredictability of the record technique give us the gift of a picture that grows away from reality. Sometimes, I can’t even explain myself which are the mechanisms that make me chose one subject rather than another. I feel that I have to stop to immortalize what my eyes see. By photographing, I try to give a particular importance to what I see. In a first moment, this is a very personal value, where the picture is the expression of what I feel. A kind of inner landscape. A magical moment that I wish to hold in my memory and in my thoughts, but at the same time I want to share through the photography. www.pierrepellegrini.ch 19 05

I love to photograph in solitude. I relish until the last instant these unique and magical moments. I want to give a voice to a silent picture. Make the picture itself talk about this silence, this quietness, is one of the aims of this project. I am not quite sure if it’s me who is looking for the subjects or if it’s the subjects themselves who are looking for me. Yet, whenever such an encounter happens, a picture arises, perfectly in harmony with myself and with my personality. A kind of balance, harmony, quietness. 21 05

It begins with an aimless walking. Just floating through the city. Walking is like a rhythmic, repetitive mantra. It helps to exclusion all the unnecessary thoughts, to evaporate all the irritating feelings, helps to deeply calm down. Move randomly across the city, to get close to everything and everyone which and whom you mostly don’t even notice on your regular days. 27 05

Perhaps it’s because Benoit Courti was a music composer in his past life that his photos have a lyrical feel. A professional portrait and art photographer since 2010, the Paris-based creative has made a beautiful set called Deep Black where he’s staged a series of symbols against black backdrops. While some of these photos appear light and playful, still others have an emotional heaviness about them that can’t be denied. “Illuminating simple subjects, minimal compositions whilst preserving a strong expressiveness” Courti says was the thought behind this series.

Steps almost forty years of your life totally ignoring the photograph and then find you can not do without it! So it was for me, and as it may seem strange as a start, I believe that everything comes when it's time. So two and a half years ago, driven by the need to see my ideas materialized, I bought my first SLR and I decided to attend a photography course to succeed better in my purpose. Well, this course has changed my life. If you have for a Master Artist, in the most absolute sense of the term, which in addition to the techniques manages to convey the passion for his work, and is able to bring into the picture, where it originated, then you're booby way! Kidnapped by the works of masters such as Ansel Adams and Jeanloup Sieff, I could not let me carry that into the world of Black & White, and a little later I found myself looking and thinking Greyscale. And here I am, today, to present myself to the world, proud of my work, of what has been my creative and experimental, knowing that you have a lot to say and to be virtually only the Beginning of a long road. Passion, introspection and experimentation are at the base of my photography.

Entering the world of photography twenty years ago, I've noticed a strong change of my perception. Any kind of different moments and impressions, everything capable being captured by photography invoked the desire in me being catched and let those experiences live on. Chased by emotions and haste, like a little child exploring a totally unknown world, there wasn't any plan or vision where this journey would go. For the next ten years this chase led me through countless styles and various influences. Photography has become an integral part of my life, a way of expression without using any words. Influenced by a multitude of artists and philosophical ideas, my style of photography gained focus and clarity. By reducing the content down to a certain point, I've started developing an intense fascination for simplicity. The point, where the true essence of an image appears, awaking deep feelings and thoughts.

ROMANIA

Alexandru Crisan (b. Bucharest, Romania 1978) is a visual artist specialized in fine art photography. He received his first film camera when he was 12 years old, and, a quarter of a century later, still has a soft spot for the black and white prints. An architect by formal education, his professional career in photography began, however, in 2011, when he finally decided to present to the public his personal works. Since then, he has focused on completing and promoting his eclectic art projects. All his long-term, open-ended photographic series - such as ‘MyRomania’ (2009-2015), ‘Impossible Worlds’ (2010-2015), ‘Lost Highway’ (2014-2015), ‘Surreal Manipulations’ (2013-2015), ‘Impossible Objects’ (2013-2014), ‘Minimal White’ (2012-2014) or ‘Minimal Black’ (2014-2015) - are meditations on space and human perceptions. His research on and within photography grasps a unique surreal vision on immateriality, while accentuating different stages of a hyperrealist understanding of reality. Since 2015 he has focused on developing new projects: ‘Erotoarchitecture’, ‘Alien Structures’ and ‘Impossible Architectures’. All these projects are unified by a compulsive surreal vision. Complementary, he accentuates multiple imaginary versions of different worlds that accept contradictory interpretations. The ‘Impossible Architectures’ project evokes mostly the architectural post-modern stance, trapped between sculptural volumes and light. Alexandru Crisan’s works are present in art galleries around the world and have been published in international peer-reviewed magazines. He has received several international awards and his fine art photography prints are held mostly in privately owned collections and galleries. www.artlimited.net/alexandrucrisan 45

GERMANY

Cold and calming photography like the one by German artist Kai Ziehl shows how the coldness of urban landscapes can become meaningful and expressive. These black and white shots capture the true dimension of cities and their mesmerizing constructions. These images share a beautiful quietness that makes them alluring for audiences. The pale tonality and the strategic angle and distance of each shot make these landscapes an aesthetic playground of geometrical beauty. Tall buildings, bridges and train stations become a series of breathtaking lines and patterns, adding a whole new level of meaning to each photo. The monochrome landscapes by Kai Ziehl are emotional and a stunning celebration of architecture and cities.

ITALY

Born in Italy in 1968, working and living in Spain, Sevilla, since 2005, Alessandra Favetto is best known for her extensive work in self-portrait. Artistically she started her journey in fine art photography in 2013 when she discovered her passion for self-portrait, image manipulation and digital art. She participated in several group exhibitions in Spain and in Italy and in 2016 she had her first Solo exhibition in Sevilla. Her style is true, passionate and very emotional. In her images there are always concepts and meanings that go far behind what a viewer can see, leaving a door open for a subjective interpretation. Her work spreads from color to black and white, from surrealism to digital art. Her technique spreads in different directions remarking the author's hunger for knowledge and experimentation although always keeping a unique and identifiable artistic style.

SLOVAKIA

My name is Erich Reichel. I'm from Prešov in Slovakia and I love photography, I take pictures every time I have the opportunity! Recently, I mostly shoot in eastern Slovakia in the towns of Košice and Bardejov. My main focus is the street, I'm trying to capture special moments or views as I perceive them. My pictures are not only a vision of the street I'm walking on, a foreshortening of the city, but a glimpse on the view and feelings the city is offering. I play with multiexposure to see how the images are going to be recomposed, I like to say that I paint whit the camera. I was influenced by black-and-white photos and films from the 50s and 60s. I admire the work of those photographers and filmmakers and their impact is somehow reflected in my photos. Mainly I try to create a special atmosphere and reveal the soul of a moment walking on the street. Since I started my career as a photographer I won several awards, medals from competitions FIAP and I partecipate to joint exhibitions. My work was published in various magazines around the world and still I feel in my heart the same passion and love for photography I had at the beginning. www.facebook.com/ErichReichelShots

BELGIUM

Lorenzo Mancini, natural light photographer currently based in Belgium. “The way I live photography is not confined to a technical lexical field. I try to intuitively detect a precise moment, an atmosphere or an emotion. Passionate about sharp contrasts, I only use natural lighting to sublimate my models who are often very expressive. What predominates the most in my work is my attraction to blacks combined with a strong contrast. I love the fact that from my pictures a dark and tormented side is perceived. Through years and through time my passion has now become my addiction. Guided by this devotion every detail and every moment is immortalized and better relived. Photography is for me a clear escape, the logical extension of my conception of the real and unreal world surrounding us, which is sometimes idealistic, sometimes nostalgic”.
