My grandmother gave me a push into the right direction to buy a camera while we were having coffee together on a Sunday afternoon. That was in 2007. From that moment on, photography has grown into an indispensable part of my life. Through photography I had the chance to meet a lot of wonderful people with whom I collaborated on great ideas and spent a fantastic time. Letting my imagination run wild and working with people, without being restricted by any external requirements is motivating me to go on. Photography means a lot to me, not only because it has changed me as a person, but because it just lifts me up, even if a day is not going so well. Just switch the camera on, switch the problems off and find myself again. I’m autodidact. In 2007 I bought my first SLR camera. It was a Canon 400D with the Canon 50mm f/1.4. Since 2009 I am working only on people photography. I photograph only digital. In 2011 I bought my new baby the Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8. The 50mm and the 24-70mm are my favorite objectives. I use the Canon 50mm f/1.4 outdoors only. If I work indoors I use the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 and the Canon 50mm f/1.4 with a softbox from Proxistar 60 x 60 cm or a 95cm Phottix Oktagon Softbox with the Yongnuo YN-560 II speedlite. That’s it!

The only and important thing for me in order to make good pictures is to create a connection between the model and myself. If there is no connection I can’t take emotional pictures. That’s why the communication before every shooting is so crucial. With some models the connection is great from the first moment of meeting each other, but this doesn’t always happen. But that’s ok, too.

For me it is very interesting to work with the models until they trust me enough to let go. You can practically see how they become more themselves with every picture that I take. Other than that, I follow no fixed rules to take good pictures. Many things happen spontaneously. This is great, because from my experience, spontaneity brings the best results. Good pictures don’t depend on the equipment, but on the eye to see the things in the right moment! 17

FLATLAND Aydın Büyüktaş, inspired by the book of Edwin Abbat “Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions” created his series called “Flatland”, in

which he sets the foundations of a dimension where a space of surprises creates a space that creates suprises. We live in places that most of the times don’t draw our attention, places that transform our memories, places that the artist gives another dimension; where the perceptions that generally crosses our minds will be demolished and new ones will arise. These works aims to leave the viewer alone with a surprising visuality ironic as well, multidimensional romantic point of view. 29

© Aydın Büyüktaş -Waiting for right weather was challanging. So many times I have to turn back without a pics cause of bad weather, technical problems, birds that attacks drone and permition problems to fly that are. - It was the year 2006. While I was reading “Hyperspace” the book of Michio Kaku, he was using examples from “Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions” of Edwin Abbot. I discovered the book like this. I was very impressed by the book written in 1884 exemplifying the difficulties in comprehending the way of interconnecting the dimensions and the inter-dimensional transition. The fact that the book tried to tell the inter-dimensional transition and the third dimension in second dimension corresponded to my inquiry about the third dimension. 33

© Aydın Büyüktaş © Aydın Büyüktaş -While the “sphere” coming from three-dimensional space raised the “square” the character of the book “Flatland” for comprehending the third dimension, the “square” saw the two-dimensional place that he lived from the three-dimensional space for the first time. The idea of bending the space on image and the thought that I could see Istanbul with this logic met up that time. The name of the book corresponding to my project as such was ironically very proper for studies. 35

-When I became concerned with visual effect and animation in 2003-2004, the idea that I could perform surreal places that I saw in my dreams and I thought as of my childhood gradually started to occur on my mind. During my childhood and adolescence, I read science fiction series of writers such as Isaac Asimov and H.G. Wells and Scientific and Technical journals. These books made me question the issues such as wormholes, black holes, parallel universes, gravitation, bending of space and time. I was obsessed by the question if a black hole occurred on the place we live, how it would bent the space, time and place.

Playing with paradoxes and mixing-up real environments with surreal interferences is the most fun during my ordinary day life. When I walk down the street, I shoot anything that catches my attention, creating an immense archive of photos. The creation of a new dreamscape happens at a later stage in the concept: thanks to my pool of images, the editing process is then almost immediate through the use of iPhone apps like PsTouch, iDesign, Superimpose, MatterApp e Mextures. My influences are a chimerical blend of the metaphysical imagery in De Chirico with a love for Bauhaus geometry and the pop culture of Warhol and Lichtenstein all with the addition of some sci-fi retro. I love that anyone can enjoy a ride in my amusement park. Just like going on a roller-coaster!

“I always have been fascinated by photography. But with the introduction of the digital camera it all became too easy, too predictable …to me. So I forced myself to go back to the roots of real analog photography. Not just by making the photograph itself, but by controlling the entire photographic process. This brought me back to the middle of the 19th century, to the amazing Collodion wet plate process. And every single day I feel challenged to refine and improve myself”.

Timmermans started out shooting film and as the photographic world turned "digital", so did he. However, Timmermans claims that the digital approach to creating imagery was "too predictable". Anything can happen when you're creating a photograph with the wet plate collodion process: dust, light leeks, chemical malfunctions... not to mention, a digital photograph can be taken in an instant whereas a photograph created by shooting a plate can take up to an hour or longer. "So - to make just one single picture - you will have to go through the whole process: cleaning the glass, pouring the plate with collodion, sensitize, exposure, developing, washing, fixing, washing it again and finally, varnishing"

As can be seen in his photographs, Timmermans shoots on location and brings his large camera with him, which was specially made to hold a 20x20 inch plates. Along with the camera and plates, he also brings all the necessary chemicals and gear he needs to develop the images: a traveling darkroom or as Timmermans calls it "a fully loaded wagon".

Technique aside, what is even more fascinating about his series titled Story Telling is his uncanny ability to incorporate "old world" props into a scene in order to really set the mood. The viewer is automatically transported back in time while looking at his photographs. Bowler hats, old trunks, violins, and petticoats. Timmermans shutter speed for these images was 3 seconds and used a 300mm lens with an aperture of f/4.
