b&w e|magazine ISSUE 02 APR2017 φῶς, Phôs, light from the ancient greek. Photographize presents Phôze. Originated by Photographize, Phôze magazine dedicates its space to the passion for monochrome photography. The images chosen affect different kinds of photographic art and are united by a common denominator: black and white. Whether classic, dense and scratchy, painted with light or full of contrast, monochromatic represents the vibrating heart of Phôze. Leafing through these pages you can feel the power of a kind of photography which discovers in the colorless color of black and white the charm of shapes and lines, the roundness of chiaroscuro, the roughness of grain, the suggestion of the scents of a darkroom. Have a good journey towards a timeless Art.

In this Issue:

Pavel Javor, Roman-tyka Kruglinski, Jayanta Roy Toni Polkowski, Zsuzsanna Dofka, Antonio Valletta, Ossiane, Jefflin Ling, Vassilis Tangoulis, Yucel Basoglu, Dennis Ramos, Frank Machalowski, Kaveh Hosseini, Biserko Fercek, Pygmalion Karatzas, Martin Krenovsky, Sebastien Leroy. POLAND

Pavel Javor, it is my artistic name. I was born in the 60's in Poland. I am photographer, illustrator and graphic designer. I live and work in a small, peaceful town in central Poland. I am fascinated with finding interesting forms, unusual shapes, ambiguity, hidden in the human body. In my works I try to escape from sensuality and in general – beauty. Through ridding body of emotions I am trying to focus attention of the recipient on the shape. To provoke and force mind to be free from stereotype. Monumental and ascetic forms are used to fool the mind and force recipient to seek other content.

Photographer Roman-tyka Krugliński use various photomanipulations to create his stunning surrealistic works. As he got to know more about the possibilities that photography could provide, Roman came spontaneously to photomontage. He like to explore, learn, experiment, and all that can be applied to a given image. I was born in the 1980’s Calcutta, grew up in, and still live in here. I have started photography at very early age but I could only hold a dslr in 2010. Before then I mainly shot with an old film camera, which help me a lot to understand the basic of photography, Presently I am working in mostly black and white landscape and nature photography where human come as tiny element of the existence. Geographically I am mostly active in the Indian Himalayas, my mission is to make people aware about the importance of this mountain range, Climate change is a major threat to the Himalayas Venerable and fragile landscape, we need to be careful and be protective towards this most important natural phenomena. Through my photography I want to make people think and act on climate change. www.facebook.com/jayantaroyphotography www.instagram.com/jayantaroy_

Telling stories without words - this is my favorite of photography. I think, in the photography the words are not too important because the vision leads us and the fantasy has no borderlines I am Zsuzsanna Dofka from Hungary. Antonio was born on December 24 1980 in Manduria, Italy. After a classical high school diploma, he received his Laurea degree in Medieval History at the UniversitĂ degli Studi di Siena. From his teenage years, he started taking pictures with a film point-and-shoot camera belonging to his family. In 1996, as a result of his keenness for astronomy, Antonio purchased his first Reflex camera, a Canon AE-1. Pursuing interests in technology and computer science, he bought a 1 pixel digital camera in 2001. At that time, while collecting and using various cameras, photography was still an occasional and intermittent pastime. Starting from 2014, a sporadic hobby rapidly became a passion. Over the past two years, Antonio has received several awards in photography competitions and his pictures are regularly published in national and international magazines and journals. www.facebook.com/ilvalletta

INNER GARDENS, QUEST FOR INFINITE... I am not made of fire but made of air, water and earth... I love art, travelling, poetry, beauty of the world and life. I love landscapes, clouds, mist, waves and trees. I love nature in which I was born.

I am from France. I have been practicing photography for ten years. Practice of painting, love for nature and travel led me naturally to photography. Landscape photography is my inner garden, the garden of my soul and poetic reverie. My photos reveal both human vulnerability and a desire for harmony and balance. It shows the beauty and immensity of the world. My photographic universe is the mirror of human soul in its complexity, harshness and tenderness. My worlds are inner worlds into which I project myself intensely during moments of happiness, doubt, or sadness. I love them to be full of grey or coloured tones. I like when they reveal love, lightness, sweetness and simplicity. Sharing beauty to make the world better is part of my artistic quest. I like writing a haiku (short poem) of my own for each photograph: a snapshot of pure emotion, the essence of a moment. www.ossiane.photo 39 05

MALAYSIA

I am black & white fine-art photographer from Selangor, Malaysia. Specialising in long exposure in seascapes & Architecture, minimalistic and documentary photography. I’m very much influenced by this sentence:

”Artist is trying to express his inner world by using objects from the outside world as symbols. It is not what you capture that matters, it is how you interpret it that matters and will elevate it from a snapshot to a work of art”. (Stieglitz)

For me, photography is not just record but more to interpreting the scene to the piece of art through post production by using computing software like photoshop. Now is a digital world, everyone uses electronic gadgets to view the products created out of photographers’ hard work. These actual works indeed have to be printed out and hung on the wall for appreciation, this should be called a real art. Is this my ultimate goal in photography? No! Of course not, I think the experience and level in photography should be deep into the heart, not simply from the external compliment. www.jefflinphotography.com 45

Vassilis Tangoulis leads a double carrier as an academic teacher-Lecturer and a fine art photographer. He is a physicist working in the Chemistry department in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and despite his full time carrier has also found success following his lifetime passion of photography. He has been a recipient of international award for his Black and White long exposure work. He was born in a small Greek town –Karpenisi surrounded by mountains and was really lucky to be a “village” boy. He had the opportunity to see sceneries that influenced his viewpoint and perspective and maybe unconsciously defined the absolute meanings of words like “sunset”, “snow”, and many others; all important ingredients of a landscape photographer. He left Karpenisi at the age of 11 and spent some 20 years in different towns and the last 10 years Vassilis lives in Patras, a beautiful town near the sea. Neutral density filters came into his life and a new surrealistic world has been revealed…From that moment he gives all his creativity to elaborate and explore this new world. Actually, he is open to both color and B&W photography. 80% of his work is B&W because, simply, those photos cannot work in color. Generally, he believes that B&W photography has more color than color photography because the multiple variations of possible grays, if treated correctly, can reveal much more depth and drama than color can offer. He is drawn to Long exposure photography because it allows him to add a fourth dimension– i.e. time– to a three dimensional object. His photography is a 4D object leaving its footprint, its “trace,” in a 2D layer. When this happens for a 3D object, it is easy for a mind to visualize its 3D morphology. In order to envision a 4D object, however, one needs the power of Fine Art photography. www.vassilistangoulis.com 51

For him Fine Art photography is an alternative way to express a common subject so that each individual artist can reveal secret aspects about it. In order to do this, each artist experiments with light, time, and spatial coordinates– and then through one’s processing, one reveals a subject framed in a transformed world in which its dimensions can be easily described and visualized. He always try to leave a message behind his photos. For him every photo has symbolic meanings and sometimes he leaves the symbols to speak for themselves but there are times he has to give 53 05

a guidance and this is usually the title he chooses for a collection. He works with collections of photos (sets of 5 or more) and this because he always needs a concept when he takes photographs. Taking a photo is always a serious matter for him and if there is no concept or no message prefers to stay silent. After all Ansel Adams said it much better : “When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.” 54 05 © Lee Jeffries

TURKEY

I was born in Switzerland in 1967 and I currently live in Istanbul. I have always had an interest in photography since I was very young. The first photos I took were based on color photography entirely; however, I have switched to black-and-white photography for ten years. In nature, I really like to create dark and dramatic scenes with sea view. I think a photo must have an emotion in it regardless of the technique used. You want to reflect either sadness or happiness when photographing a human or you want to show all the beauties you see when photographing a view or you want to capture monumental structures when photographing buildings. The point of view and technique develop and change in accordance with the experience. I am expressing myself with the black-and-white and long-exposure techniques. I go shooting alone. I take the road in the wee hours of the morning and I break connections with all people when I arrive at the targeted place. In fact, sometimes I encounter with such dangerous situations which make me think of that I will never go back home but I still continue to take photos. So, I can get what I want when I take pains with it. I really like to use long-exposure technique. It is very delightful to reflect the energy of the nature with shootings taking ½ seconds or sometimes 2 minutes or even more. I see a lovely rock or space when I am photographing a sea view. You cannot possibly reflect the gorgeousness of the sea with a very long exposure. So, you try to capture this gorgeousness by trial and error and even with consecutive shootings taking a very short time and this lasts for minutes. www.yucelbasoglu.com 57

However, when you get that one photo among hundreds of shots, you live that moment again and again while you are editing it. This is what we want, isn’t it! You just cannot have this feeling when you just hold the camera and take random photos. People who are around me tell me that your photos are too dark and pessimistic; you always use long exposure and black-and-white. So, I tell them that I am not shooting for you I shoot for myself. I see inside stories of anything in black and white. Long exposure is not just a technique!! Each photo I took with black and white and long exposure techniques is an effort for capturing and reflecting the things which clouds, sea, rivers, trees, people and I cannot explain. An effort which will never end… 60 05 © Lee Jeffries

Kaveh Hosseini’s digitally manipulated photographs are permeated with an otherworldly atmosphere, inhabited by common objects and anonymous characters. Displaced, distorted, and seemingly lost in unforgiving environments, Hosseini’s protagonists appear to blend into nothingness. Rather than a lugubrious sentiment of pain and isolation, Hosseini seeks to produce is an ideological sanctuary where mutating perceptions lead us to question the realness of our universe. “I tend to use real elements to create unreal worlds, which is a prove to the perception of our mind from our environment. Those moments when you become tired, bored, angry or disappointed by the world around you and you need new worlds, which only exist in your mind. A refuge, where you are the only ruler and you determine every happenings. On the other side the mood photography becomes a companion through your soul wanderings. It takes and carries a part of your burden, walking side by side with your solitude.” www.kaveh-hosseini.com

CROATIA

Biserko Fercek was born some 50 years ago in Zagreb, the main city of the Republic of Croatia, where I finished my education and where I live at the moment. By education I am a construction engineer so that my formal job has nothing to do with my hobby. But never the less photography was and always will be my greatest hobby ever since my childhood days. My grad school teacher was also a great fan of photography so she was looking for children who showed talent in photography, and You could consider that as a beginning of my photo career. It was the time of two-eyed Russian cameras, movies in middle format, first expositions and learning the basics. In that time it was hard to get any literature in my country about photography. It was my great wish to go to a photography school but it wasn’t a great future investment at that time so under the influence of my parents I didn’t enroll that school. Later in high school I passed on to a 35mm camera with exchangeable objectives, also my first Russian development machine and later on to some German types as well. It were purely black and white photos and the inability to obtain colored photographs turned me away from my hobby for a great number of years. Everybody was talking only about colored photography, everything was expensive and new and I found some other hobbies. With the appearance of Commodore and ZX Spectrum computers became my new obsession and on my friends Amiga then later on my own PC I started working on graphic design. I saw Photoshop for the first time when I started using Windows OS during the early 90s. When DSLR cameras became cheaper I started to take photography seriously again.Things filled each other out and so I combined my computer knowledge with photography. www.artlimited.net/bibo 81 05

Obviously Photoshop was the link between the two. I am a great fan of blur and in my work I use all sorts of different objectives that allow that kind of effect. Those are TS and Tilt objectives, Lens Baby in several versions and some “plunger” home made objectives. I love filtering photos, using all sorts of textures, and I even think I made my own recognizable style. My wife and I love traveling so its not uncommon that we travel to distant countries just to make photos.I put my work online on several web pages, but I would like to point out ArtLimited as the best one. I had a few exhibitions, won several photo contests, and my work has been published in many photo journals. 83 05

FRANCE

I was born in 1989 on a characteristic islande, Corsica, where I grew up between sea and mountains during twenty years. It's in the steep valleys and rocked by the swell of a shredded coastline that I draw my inspiration and shape my conception of the world and photography. Definitely inspired by the natural spaces and the stakes that they represent in our consumerist system, my photography tends to be an homage to the Earth, but also an inventory of a planet in perpetual evolution. It's only at the age of 22 that photography really begins to fascinate me, and I have to say that it's my father who transmitted to me this passion. In 2011, I leave my native land to undertake geography studies in Montpellier, which will lead me to a master's degree in "Management of disasters and natural hazards". Today, I live in Paris and pursue my quest for aesthetics by continuing to immortalize the landscapes and human civilization as a testimony to the beauty of the world.
