Summer in the City

Forget heading out of town, London is at its best in the summer months with a selection of outdoor events and cool happenings. Scarlett Kilcooley-O’Halloran rounds up the best

The Chap Olympiad Bedford Square | 17 July A rather unconventional day out comes in the form of the Chap Olympiad. Celebrating “athletic ineptitide and immaculate trouser creases”, there will be old fashioned lawn games such as coconut shy, bowls and hoopla, with guests expected to dress accordingly – think Victorian explorers, World War Two RAF pilots and flappers. Set in the leafy surrounds of Bedford Square, the live music and side shows will keep you entertained for hours as you feast on cucumber sandwiches and homemade cake. (

Cartier International Polo Guards Polo Club | 25 July One of the most glamorous events in the sporting calendar, the Cartier International Polo is a day where royalty, high society, international music stars and celebrities come together to watch the polo season reach its climax. After a day spent drinking champagne and dining, dance the night away in the Chinawhite enclosure as the legendary Pete Tong brings the sound of Ibiza to the dance floor. (

The Chap Olympiad

London. From hidden gardens and secret tunnels under London Bridge to a Roman villa floor beneath an ancient city church, these walks will show you the capital’s lesser-known historical gems. The walks run from Tuesday to Friday every week throughout the summer with all proceeds going to charity. And there’s no need to book – just turn up at the meeting point and start exploring. (

Portobello Rocks The Tabernacle | 17 July As a prelude to the Portobello Rocks Concert in the evening, local Notting Hill venue the Tabernacle plays host a day of entertainment in celebration

of Portobello’s unique charms. The outside courtyard will be transformed into a mini Portobello market, complete with food, art and antique stalls bursting with trinkets to treasure. Check out Portobello Market Past, Present and Future, a photographic exhibition that charts the history of one of west London’s most famous roads, and enjoy the sounds of the Mangrove Steel Drum band providing the musical backdrop. A day with heart at a venue that has long been at the heart of the local community. (

Secret Cinema August | Date and location to be announced Turning the traditional cinematic experience on its head, Secret Cinema audiences are treated to live theatre and music that compliment the theme of the film – which is only revealed on arrival. Past venues have included car parks and city farms, all of which have been transformed into outlandishly appropriate settings – for Bugsy Malone the Troxy was made over to become the Lower East Side. A multi-sensory alternative night out – sign up online. (
