Transitional Dressing for Spring

With each new day comes a fresh new challenge and at the moment, many will agree, this is staring at one’s wardrobe in the morning and deciding what to wear. As the clocks go forward this weekend the days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer and our winter wardrobes are beginning to feel out of date. Suddenly the drawers that are full to the brim of wool jumpers and thick black opaque tights seem dull and depressing in the dusty light of spring.

WWD and,

Just when we have got wrapping up warm down to a stylish art we now need to reassess. The practicalities of this, however, are complex. Whilst many of us long for Summer and want to grab our sombrero’s and head to the Heath, the bright blue sky and smiling sun are a misleading indication of warmth. With the first warm(er) temperatures in a long time in late February, London rejoiced and threw all socks and scarves to the wind, only to a few days later find ourselves shivering at a bus stop in our bare footed ballet pumps. This optimism should be applauded, however it is not Summer yet, and we must keep a healthy balance of cashmere and cotton. Let us hark back to last September and the Spring/Summer 2010 collections for inspiration in choosing key pieces and identifying trends that will enable us to manage this transition stylishly and practically whilst staying on the pulse of fashion. When it comes to coats we want something that is light and adaptable, something that can be easily folded into a bag or draped stylishly over one’s arm on the journey to work . What better item of clothing than the trench coat, seen at Erdem, Aquascutum and of course Burberry Prorsum. Diverse and timeless, the[12/08/2010 15:39:55]

trench coat is the perfect Spring addition to your wardrobe, great for showers and shielding you from those unpredictable winds. It can be worn over anything, but if you want to take your cue from the catwalk wear over long maxi dresses, as a dress in its own right and chose a bright and modern colour. If you want to show your enthusiasm for the Summer to come, doing so in your choice of colour and print, rather than daring to bare prematurely, is an effective way of feeling Summery without catching hypothermia. Diane Von Furstenburg, presented vivid floral tunics, ensembles of lively animal print and dresses of brilliant white and canary yellow, whilst Proenza Schouler created aquatic shift dresses in deep cobalt blues and emerald greens, with tie dye detailing, reminiscent of the vista over the Mediterranean Sea. Uncovering ones legs and feet for the first time of the year can be a daunting project and stepping out for the first time either tight-less or sock-less is a pivotal fashion moment which most of us miss-judge. Ease yourself into this and channel your urban cool with Ann Demeulmeester. Her tailored leather trousers, three quarter length capri pants and black and white harem collots are met with gladiatoral sandals. This is perfect for Spring when it is not too hot or cold for fabrics and styles to be prohibitive. It is also a style-savvy way to introduce sandals into your wardrobe without attracting pitiful looks on the tube at eight o’clock in the morning- the length of the trouser will deflect from the lack of fabric around your feet. Comme des Garcons also showed inspired ways to initiate ones legs to fresh air with black leggings underneath pretty, structured summer dresses in white and neutral tones. The leggings give warmth and confidence, the colour-clash is cutting-edge cool and they can be discarded easily at a later, warmer and more self assured point. Accessories are another great way to freshen up your look. Swap those black and bold sunglass frames for tortoise shell, clear perspex and coloured glass as seen on many a catwalk last season. Linda Farrow worked with Matthew Williamson, Peter Pilotto and Alexander Wang, amongst others, on the eyewear for their shows so is a good place to start your search. The rule that everyone employs is to choose one part if your body at a time to reintroduce to the world, be it arms, legs or feet. By easing yourself into the new season in this way, you will be able to confidently shed a few more layers come April or March and be prepared for those unpredictably cold and warm days. Done right, transitional dressing can make your style look chic, fashionable and effortless and is achievable through high fashion or the high street. Put a little time into planning your transitional wardrobe and it will definitely put a fashionable Spring into your step towards Summer. By Scarlett Kilcooley-O’Halloran[12/08/2010 15:39:55]
