WILD TALES

February brings many joyous things… snowdrops, Valentine love and of course the Oscars’ red carpet, which will be rolled out for this year’s ceremony on 22 February. As always, we’ve a feast of great films on offer, including the cream of this year’s awards contenders, with Foxcatcher (6–23 Feb), Martin Luther King biopic Selma (13–26 Feb), Wild (13–19 Feb) and Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper (20–26 Feb) receiving a host of nominations. An antidote to the winter blues, The Second Best Marigold Hotel opens on 27 Feb and reunites Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy, alongside new addition Richard Gere, in a feel-good film that lets us escape to warmer climes. We’re bringing back a couple of audience favourites this month too – Pride (3 Feb) and Mr. Turner (6–12 Feb) – so if you didn’t manage to catch them first time round now’s your chance. Shakespeare’s Globe on Screen joins our popular Stage on Screen programme, kicking off with the Duchess of Malfi on 26 Feb. At Phoenix we aim to inspire and help you explore your interests. Feed your mind and learn something new by trying one of our short courses (p14): from 8 Great Hollywood Directors to The Art of Screenwriting, and a workshop where you can make a crystal radio, there’s plenty to choose from.

Phoenix is a registered charity. Our aim is to bring inspirational film and art to all. Made possible with the support of:

Meeting and falling for female impersonator Röbi, Ernst is torn between his bourgeois upbringing and acceptance of his homosexuality. A fascinating blend of documentary and drama as the film cuts between flashbacks and interviews with the real Ernst and Röbi.

Fri 13 – Thu 26 Feb Dir: Ava DuVernay Cast: David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo UK / USA 2014, 2hrs 7mins Starring the UK’s own David Oyelowo, Selma is a powerful and timely story of courage and unity. Set in 1965, the film chronicles the tumultuous period when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led three mass protest marches along a 54-mile stretch of highway from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Refusing to back down in the face of violent opposition, King and his supporters fought to secure equal voting rights for African-Americans. Featuring stunning performances from a top-

notch cast including Tom Wilkinson, Wendell Pierce (The Wire) and Martin Sheen, it’s a scandal that director DuVernay hasn’t been Oscar nominated for this gripping film.

PRIDE (+ Intro) 15 Tue 3 Feb, 7pm (film at 7.30pm) Dir: Matthew Warchus Cast: Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy UK 2014, 2hrs Screening as part of DMU's Out-Takes Festival – celebrating LGBT history – and introduced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard. Muriel (Maggie Smith). Elsewhere, old favourites Evelyn and Douglas (Dench and Nighy) are wondering where their regular lunch dates are leading, and handsome new arrival Guy (a twinkly-eyed Richard Gere) causes a bit of a stir. Fri 27 Feb – Thu 5 Mar Dir: Denis Villeneuve Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Mélanie Laurent Canada / Spain 2013, 1hr 30mins

Fri 27 Feb – Mon 2 Mar Dir: Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit Cast: Patcha Poonpiriya Thailand 2013, 2hrs 7mins, subtitled

Set in 1981, the most crime-ridden year of New York’s history, this new film from Chandor (Margin Call, All is Lost) has drawn comparisons with The Godfather. First-generation immigrant Abel runs a heating oil business and wants to be on the up-and-up, but his competitors have the city carved up in their favour. As Abel and his fiery Brooklyn-born wife fight for their slice of the American Dream, in this town how long can a man stay honest and be successful?

An enthralling psychological thriller from Denis Villeneuve (Incendies, Prisoners) guaranteed to make your skin crawl. Glum history professor Adam Bell is watching an old movie when he spots what looks like himself in a scene. Discovering the doppelganger is enigmatic actor Anthony, Adam tracks him down; but what begins as a friendly meeting descends into a darker journey as the two identical men’s lives become bizarrely and irrevocably intertwined.

Although pitched as ‘the first film based on a real Twitter feed’ (a USP almost guaranteed to put off as many people as it attracts), this new Thai film following high school pupil Mary is actually a punchy and original coming-of-age story. Buying a frozen jellyfish, an exploding iPhone, and attempting to create the perfect yearbook are all covered in 410 tweets that punctuate the film, perfectly skewering the frustrations and experiences of youth.

THE CRYSTAL LINE— THE FUTURE BATTLEFIELD HEARD THROUGH ITS PAST

JULIAN OLIVER THE CRYSTAL LINE Cube Gallery, Free Fri 6 – Mon 30 Mar

Created by internationally-renowned artist Julian Oliver, The Crystal Line reconstructs a World War One crystal radio as a way to hear about the future of warfare. The advent of radio communications revolutionised war, removing the need for human and animal messengers, and giving commanders more effective control of their troops on the frontline. The radios possessed an almost magical quality, turning electromagnetic phenomena in the air directly into electricity. Today, all wireless communications are descendants of the crystal radio, from mobile phones to wireless networking.

The Crystal Line will scour the World Wide Web for the latest developments in warfare, transmitting them to the radio set complete with audio properties and textures unique to a crystal radio set; heard just as men in the trenches would have heard them a century ago.
