Proposed OFW dept to cover all needs of migrant workers: DOLE By ferdinand patiNiO

ANILA – An official of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday said the creation of the proposed Department of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) would be able to cover all the needs of Filipinos working abroad.

“But this time under one roof, you will see a Department that will protect not only the rights but especially, during pre-employment. We think this is the most important, the preemployment situation, both in terms of regulation, in terms of welfare and in

terms of really protecting them and giving all the benefits and the information they need for them to be successful Filipino citizens abroad,” Labor Undersecretary Joji Aragon said in a Laging Handa briefing. Aragon, however, said this does not mean promot-

She also reported that DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello has informed the senators that he fully supports the creation of the new de-

partment. “Secretary Bello last night sent another letter to the Senate, saying that he supports 100 percent the creation of Department of OFW, on whatever version they have. Let’s remember, the boxing is over, finally approved at the Lower House. In the Senate, it’s on the committee level and we can be sure, we were informed, Turn to page 14

n overAll sensory experience. That, for Michael Fiebrich, is what defines design, not just mere aesthetics.

His passion for innovation and desire to create moving experiences has won him numerous awards, generated a lot of buzz and publicity for his works and turned him to one of the most sought-after interior design and architecture consultants in the world. His company, Michael Fiebrich Design (MFD) always serves flair no matter what the design objective is. His process is fluid and always delivers delight in all aspects.

A Sense of Wonder: The MFD Process

Known for its timeless, elegant, and functional aesthetics, MFD has been delivering a delightful experience with its design footprint, with each work always better than the last. one of MFD’s best known projects is the Crown Towers in Perth, Australia, which brings an expressive interior architecture through luxurious, sleek, contemporary, and sophisticated spaces. The firm brought to life Australia’s most luxurious suite, the Deluxe villa, which added dramatic features and high-end finishes to make bold graphic statements on an otherwise simple layout.

Another work of art, a seamless fusion of good spatial design amidst the environs, is The Club at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The beautiful space features walls in polished satin and matte bronze rods that serve as mini private screens and visual backdrops that mimic Singapore’s cityscape. Custom accessories like pendants reminiscent of metallic clouds highlight its ceilings, and beautiful carpets in modern patterns give a sense of the outdoors, complementing the panoramic view of the skyline. MFD has been winning awards since 2014 for designs for hotel restaurants, hotel suites, and lobby lounges. In 2019, the firm won an award for its design of the Presidential Suite at the Conrad Manila Hotel in Pasay City.

Setting the Gold standard in design

located at the bustling ninoy Aquino Avenue is the first township of SM Development Corporation (SMDC) called Gold City, which is a benchmark in premier township development. Featuring various residential and commercial developments in a sprawling master-planned community, Gold City will be setting the standard for an upscale live-work-play lifestyle, a vision that will soon turn to reality. Within this dynamic city will rise Gold residences. SMDC tapped MFD because of its portfolio of exemplary designs in hotel and spa interiors in the Philippines and around the world. MFD is an expert in creating a design narrative, which it sticks to from concept to design, construction and

MFD is setting the tone for the Gold residences experience with the design of the common spaces. The firm had the challenging task of bringing this narrative into the design: imparting an imposing character and a touch of glamour while exuding a welcoming atmosphere. The common spaces of Gold residences combine timeless glamour with visual impact and art. The lobby is a key interior feature. layering the black and gold elements provides soothing comfort that speaks of luxury. A visual treat, it exudes impeccable taste and luxury. Crystal lights hanging from the ceiling demands to be noticed as it serves as complementing installation to the double-height custom art screens, which set the mood of space – warm yet commanding. Marbles, gilded stones, and other organic elements make the environment rich and substantial. Sustainability is the core of the design guidelines. The design planning started in the midst of the global pandemic, and while sustainability has always been a part of MFD’s design work, it has even become more important now. “I would like to believe (that) adversity brings positive change. We have to keep finding ways to create a meaningful experience,” Fiebrich says. Anti-microbial features were incorporated in the building elements. realizing how fragile the supply chain is, MFD sourced out design materials locally wherever possible. Gold residences will offer generous physical spaces that will create a sense of wellbeing, comfort, and safety. Strong design statements like art installations, features, and lighting welcome residents to their new home. MFD has a firm resolve to maintain an atmosphere of liveable luxury. “our residents should feel they have arrived somewhere important,” Fiebrich says. And that place is their home. n For more information on Gold residences, visit https://smdc.com/ properties/gold-residences/

Filipino consumers’ preference for digital shopping is here to stay, research says By the good newS PiLiPinaS team

T

he Filipino consumers’ preference for digital is here to stay, suggests the new research by Qualtrics. The new research released on november 4, 2020, outlining the extent to which CoViD-19 has encouraged consumers to embrace digital channels reveals the Filipino consumers’ rising and continuing preference for things digital. Since the beginning of the pandemic, two-thirds (67%) of the respondents* said they have purchased more online and increased the frequency they use online banking (62%). Shopping for groceries online also increased (53%). in contrast, 55% of respondents said the frequency at which they visit retailers has decreased. The move to online shows no signs of slowing with 76% of people saying

The pandemic has seen the rise of digital purchases and trends point to the continuing preference. it is likely they will continue online shipping over the next 6 months. in further proof of how CoViD-19 is changing the behaviours and preferences of people in the philippines, 47% said it is more likely they will pick up food from a restaurant rather than dining in. There are hints of things returning to the previous normal in the coming months. Although many respondents (94%) still say they are very concerned by the pandemic, 40% said it is

likely they’ll choose to eat at a restaurant in the next six months. Respondents were also planning to take a family holiday (37%), use public transport (36%), and visit the mall (34%) over this same time frame. not surprisingly, travelling by air is the least likely behaviour to return, with more than half saying it’s unlikely they’ll travel internationally (57%) or domestically (54%) by plane within the next 6 months. over the past 6 months, the number of people in the

philippines expecting CoViD-19 to affect their day to day life for more than a year has increased by 5% (45% today, up from 40% in June 2020). “After months of disruption, we are beginning to see new behaviours and preferences emerge that are likely to remain post-pandemic. There is no doubt that there has been a massive shift towards digital, making it critical for brands to ensure they are able to optimise the experience they deliver on their digital channels including mobile applications. Simultaneously, even though consumers are beginning to go back to some previous habits, high levels of ambiguity remain, meaning businesses must be able to understand and quickly respond to changing environments. Businesses can deal with this ambiguity using tools like Qualtrics to get an “always-on” and integrated understanding of their customer experience across touchpoints, equipping them with end-to-end insights to continually deliver superior customer experience.” said harish Argarwal, head of CX Strategy for Southeast Asia. n

OKYO – The Philippines received the award as the Best Overseas Diving Area in the Marine Diving Awards 2020 held recently in Tokyo. Garnering 814 out of the 3,572 total votes cast by subscribers of the Marine Diving Magazine, the Philippines was number one for the first time in the Overseas Diving Category. The magazine cited the Philippines as “a first pick for many diving lovers.” The award was given in ceremonies at the recent Marine Diving Fair 2020 in the district of Ikebukuro in Tokyo. “This award is a testimony that diving is more fun in the Philippines, with each underwater paradise offering a unique adventure and experience to behold, and return to. Our underwater landscape is a colorful kaleidoscope of nature’s living jewels, one that divers cannot find anywhere else,” Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo- Puyat said. Participating in the diving fair, the Department of Tourism (DOT) featured in its booth underwater videos of various Philippine diving spots. Five Philippine resorts held online meetings with visitors.

The Philippines garners seven recognitions in the 27th World Travel Awards, highlighted by the two awards which named the country as Asia’s Leading Beach Destination and Asia’s Leading Dive Destination.

Marine Diving Magazine cited the diving sites in Cebu, Bohol, Moalboal, and Busuanga which are teeming with whale sharks, snappers, dugong, other big fishes, large schools of sardines and long mackerels, and other rare and endemic species. These diving sites, the magazine said, have “captured the hearts of many divers and make them want to revisit the Philippines again and again. And with its easy access from Japan

and reasonable tour prices, the Philippines is no doubt a first pick for many diving lovers.” Among the other popular diving sites in the country are Malapascua off the northern tip of Cebu Island, Anilao in Batangas, Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro, Donsol in Sorsogon, and

Dauin in Negros Oriental. It also includes the Apo Reef Natural Park on the western waters of Occidental Mindoro, the world’s second largest contiguous coral reef system, and the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park which is a UNESCO-declared World Heritage Site. The Philippines has bagged similar awards such as both Asia and the World’s Leading Diving Destination Awards in the Prestigious World Travel Awards in 2019. “Diving in the Philippines is like a dream come true, where you wake up and dive at the center of the center of global marine biodiversity, and keep wanting to dive again to come back for more.” Dive is one of the top tourism products under the National Tourism Development Plan 2016-2022. The DOT is set to issue guidelines for the operations of diving establishments to ensure the health and safety of divers under the new normal. “When the situation is better and with the easing of travel restrictions around the world, we hope to again showcase to divers not only our underwater jewels and biodiversity, but also our brand of culture and hospitality,” Puyat said. n

it might be certified as urgent this 18th Congress,” Aragon said. “We believe that the creation of the Department of OFW, authored by Senator Bong Go and supported by practically all, will strengthen not only seabased but also land-based.” Aragon also reiterated the request of Bello for the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to be part of the new Department. “We hope that the POEA’s regulatory powers and quasijudicial functions will be preserved and the OWWA who is in charge of the welfare side will likewise be preserved.

We also have labor attachés, or POLOs (Philippine Overseas Labor Offices), in-charge on our half way homes, the so-called centers will be presented...” she added. Aragon is hoping that the new Department will be formed this year or early next year. In a public address on Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte renewed his call for the passage of a law creating a Department of Overseas Filipino Workers, saying the welfare of OFWs should be handled by a separate department other than DOLE. He also promised the OFWs that there will be a more thorough review of policies for the protection of their rights. n

Andanar appealed to the public to remain vigilant against misinformation on government responses. “We ask everyone to remain vigilant against misinformation, and be reminded of the division that its proliferation can cause,” he said. “Rest assured the Duterte administration continues to respond to the calamities that affect us all and to the needs of Filipinos in general.” (PR) n

On Christmas morning, Lola wakes up to a surprise and finds her living room decorated with parol star lanterns made by her granddaughter. The emotional montage is underscored by the parol or a star-shaped paper lantern which is a symbol of the Filipino Christmas spirit and the lively, colorful holiday celebrations unique to the Philippines. “Give your home a magical makeover with these enchanting parols, inspired by our Christmas ad! We’d love to see your creations!” wrote Disney.
