Amazing isn’t it – after May 3rd’s local elections in England apparently (judging by the media, that is) all of those problems that spelled an end to Labour disappeared! All of the anti-Semitism headlines were quickly replaced with new ones. These ones, too, were a joy. Apparently Labour, who were up 79 seats to 2350, were having a disastrous time while the Tories, down 35 seats to 1332, were elated and feeling the warmth of hearty congratulations from every BBC news journalist within three continents. The BBC are, astoundingly, the worst of all of these daily liars. Practically everything they say is coloured with intent. Reporting on Labour on a plethora of adjectives and phrases like “failed to win” dominate the conversation, then switching to the Tories change their phrasing to include “major gains” and “substantial margin”. At 6am on BBC Breakfast the first item went ““Conservatives hold on to some councils and Labour make some gains BUT lose seats in other areas.” It doesn’t matter which political party, if any, you sympathise with - this should worry and anger each and every one of us. Even if not 100% successful, the very act of this deception is tantamount to brainwashing. The elections are just the tip of the iceberg, of course. Think of the current situation in Israel (that’s how the BBC would say it – I would say “Think of how Israel are carrying out Genocide in Palestine”). The BBC are terrified of upsetting the Israel lobby, even more so than American news stations. The Beeb’s website told us on 14th May that “Dozens die as US embassy opening looms”. How passive is that sentence? To be honest, after the past few months, nobody can be certain whether or not they are antiSemitic anymore. Pointing out that Israel are in the processing of carrying out the slow and deliberate extermination of the Palestinians is, apparently, anti-Semitic. Even Jewish folk who criticise the Israeli state can be anti-Semitic apparently. There is an obvious grip over our media by the same lobby groups that have hold of our politicians, but it’s not the Jews – it’s Israel. Israel want to make sure in your mind that criticism of their barbaric actions IS THE SAME as blind hatred for the Jewish community. I take issue with this. Trump smells money, and for that he’s willing to turn a blind eye to Israel’s tendency for terror. And if you think that it won’t be possible for Israel to win this battle of minds, think of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s brag to the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee just a few weeks ago: “You remember people talked about Israel’s isolation? You remember that,” he said. “Israel’s isolation? Pretty soon, the countries that don’t have relations with us, they’re going to be isolated. There are those who talk about boycotting Israel? We’ll boycott them.” Israel have ignored international law for decades and have made a mockery of attempts at peaceful solutions. It’s time for the international community to bring sanctions and treat them the way they deserve for their behaviour. Until next month...

What is a Trust? Most of us have heard about trusts but many of us have little or no idea what a trust is and how trusts can be beneficial. A trust is a useful way of protecting your assets for a variety of reasons. Assets can be placed into a trust by preparing a trust document that can come into being whilst you are alive (Lifetime Trust) or on death (Will Trust). Some of the main reasons for creating trusts are as follows:- To benefit young, disabled or vulnerable beneficiaries- where a person wants to make a lifetime gift or a gift on their death to a young, disabled or vulnerable beneficiary it can be helpful to use a trust to ensure that the funds are used properly for that person’s benefit which may include where a beneficiary is entitled to means tested benefits. - To ensure that the asset passes ultimately to particular beneficiaries - for example, a person may wish their children to inherit their home but would also like their spouse or partner to be able to live in the property for their lifetime. If the spouse were to inherit the property then it could be gifted to anyone under their Will and the children could be left with nothing even though it was their parent’s wish that the property should be theirs. A trust could give their spouse a right to live in the property but would also ensure that the property passes to the children after the spouse’s death. - Tax planning- putting assets into trust can be advantageous for Inheritance Tax planning. - Personal Injury Trusts - these can be used to protect compensation received from an accident. When creating a trust, trustees must be chosen and these are the people who are responsible for looking after the trust assets and ensuring that the trust is correctly dealt with. The trustees should be trustworthy and reliable and it is possible to instruct a professional, such a solicitor, to act as a trustee. It is important that a trust is set up correctly and that careful consideration is given to the wording used in the trust. At Jennifer Melly Law, we have many years of experience in setting up and managing trusts. If you would like to find out more about trusts then please contact Jennifer Melly Law for more information on 01639 630057.

YELLOW TRIANGLE SCHEME AVAILABLE FOR DRIVERS Motorists in Powys are being urged to sign up to a scheme that could help emergency service find possible life-saving information about a driver in an accident. Powys County Council’s Yellow Triangle scheme car drivers the opportunity to display a means of quickly determining the driver’s details in the event of the collision. The scheme has two elements, a ‘Your Details’ card and a yellow triangle sticker. The card will give information about the driver’s next of kin, medical conditions, allergies and medications. We will inform drivers to keep this card in the glove compartment of their vehicle. The yellow triangle will be displayed in the bottom left hand corner inside the windscreen, out of the driver’s field of view, to inform the emergency services that the information is in the glove compartment. Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “Ensuring that our roads are safe is hugely important for our county. “This latest initiative will provide emergency services with vital information if a driver is involved in a collision. I urge all Powys drivers to take advantage of this worthwhile scheme.” Geoff Wilks, the council’s Road Safety Project Officer, said: “As most mobile phones nowadays are lockable and only accessible by a password, the mobile phone I.C.E (in case of emergency) system can no longer be relied upon to give the emergency services access to details. “This scheme will go that one step further by not only providing next of kin details but details of the card holder’s personal information.” To request a ‘Yellow Triangle’ scheme pack, call 01597 826979 or email email@example.com 16

by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
High pressure indulged us during May, offering some lengthy spells of fine and at times gloriously warm weather. To expect a further month of dry and warm weather would be asking a lot of a typical British summer, let alone a Welsh one, but indications suggest that we may well be treated to at least a sizeable portion of good weather during 'flaming June'. High pressure could hold sway during June, keeping at bay weather systems intent on ruining a continuation of the settled weather that eased us into summer. However, any high pressure will have its work cut out, fending off cloud and rain that may well dampen what could be a very good June. Any June warmth, if substantial, could result in thunderstorms, but an even keep of warmth would keep that threat at bay. Rainfall for the month is expected to be on the average. Temperatures are expected to be on or above the average. Jonathan Powell, Sunday, May 13th 2018

With its growing number of daytime fun singalong sessions the Goldies Cymru Charity is taking off across Mid and West Wales. Fondly referred to simply as ‘Goldies’ the growth of the charity has been supported by the Cardiff-based Moondance Foundation and the Big Lottery Fund in Wales. Cheryl Davies is project manager in Mid and West Wales for Goldies Cymru, she said; “Our charity reaches out to older people, many who live in isolation and have little in their lives to look forward to. We are certainly NOT a choir, but fun singing of the popular songs of the 60s and onwards are at the heart of all that we do. Hardly a day goes by without a request to introduce our charity in a new area. “We’re always keen to hear from potential freelance session leaders and as our work develops across Mid and West Wales we use Welsh language folk song books and therefore fluent Welsh speakers, and singers, are needed. The work of the charity has been recognised through a number of awards. Last year Goldies Cymru was the national 2017 Epic Award winner run by the Voluntary Arts organisation. Goldies was shortlisted for this major award from a short list of 32 groups. Supported by a 3 year People and Places, Big Lottery Fund in Wales grant the first year has seen 15 new sessions open in Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, Swansea & Carmarthenshire and has built up many partnerships. The charity has more recently met with teams and venues in Powys, Pembrokeshire and of course Ceredigion to expand further into Mid and West Wales in Year 2. We have sessions running in: Ystalyfera Development Trust: 2nd Thursday of every month; 11am-12pm Ystradgynlais The Welfare: Last Thursday of each month; 11am-12pm

Pass Plus Cymru is a road safety scheme being offered to young drivers by Powys County Council’s Road Safety Unit. Aimed at young drivers aged 17-25 years old and who hold a full driving licence, the course consists of a 2.5 hour theory session, followed by a nine hour practical session with an approved driving instructor. The practical session includes motorway driving, night driving and driving in cities. The courses, which will start at 6pm, will be held at the following locations: • • •
Brecon Fire Station – June 6, August 7 and October 3 Llandrindod Fire Station – May 14, June 18 and September 3 Newtown Fire Station – May 31, July 11, August 16 and September 26
The course will cost £20 for participants as the Road Safety Unit will pay the remaining £80 thanks to the Welsh Government funding. Taking part in Pass Plus Cymru may help to make you a safer driver and possibly even reduce your insurance costs. Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “Ensuring that our roads are safe is hugely important for our county. I would urge young drivers across Powys to take advantage of this fantastic scheme. “These courses are so important because they provide better driving skills and could ultimately help save lives.” For more information or to book a place, please visit www.dragondriver.com You can also contact the Road Safety Unit by emailing email@example.com

Pharmacists Boost Services To Offer Extra Help For Patients Your local pharmacist is taking over some of the services traditionally provided by doctors in a bid to make life easier for both patients and GPs. ABMU Health Board has commissioned the new services from chemists to ease the pressure on doctors and give patients faster access to some treatments. Pharmacists study for five years before they can become qualified and registered so they are experts on medicines and how they are used. With the number of complex and chronic health problems on the rise, the NHS is calling on the expertise of pharmacists more and more to make sure patients are taking the right medicines for their conditions. It is keeping staff busy at pharmacies like DR Cecil Jones in Glynneath, where pharmacist Niki Watts is many patients’ first port of call for health advice. He runs a successful stop smoking scheme, supports local GPs by taking on complex medication usage reviews, and has performed more than 500 flu vaccinations this winter. “It makes sense for us to take over things like medication usage reviews or hospital discharge medicine reviews because they take so long and a GP appointment is usually only 10 minutes long,” said Niki. “We are experts on drugs and their side effects and we’ve got the time to explain why the patients are taking them and the best times of day to take them.” The service is hugely valued by local residents. “I think it’s marvellous,” said customer Ann Pike, 77. “I couldn’t manage without him.” “My husband has had a stroke and has to take a lot of medication. They put all his tablets out in a box marked with the days so I don’t have to worry about whether he has taken them. They even deliver them to the house.” Ann also had a flu vaccination at the pharmacy after seeing a lot of her friends at her bowls club suffering from the flu. She said: “I’m glad I had it done, it wasn’t painful, there weren’t any after effects and it didn’t cost me anything. My doctor’s surgery is so busy; it was much quicker and easier to have it done here.” “Quite a few people have been hospitalised with the flu this year so we’ve had a huge banner in the window advertising the flu service,” said Niki. “A lot of people said yes because they could have it done there and then without having to make a special appointment.”
Pharmacists are also supplying emergency prescription medicine and palliative care drugs after hours. For a list of 26 minor ailments, they can now also prescribe prescription-only medicines without the
need for a GP appointment. Meanwhile, extended weekday and Sunday opening hours at chemists is making it easier for people to use the new services. The extra work being taken on by pharmacists has been welcomed by GPs. Dr Richard Tristham, who is based at Clydach Health Centre, said: “Pharmacists are vital and we welcome their input. Working together with them is helping ease the pressure we are facing.” Dr Steve Harrowing pharmacist Niki Watts.
Dr Steve Harrowing, at the Vale of Neath practice, added: “Not having to spend ages doing complicated medicine usage reviews is freeing up my time to concentrate on sicker patients and more complex cases. “And from the patients’ point of view, it is a lot easier to walk into a chemist than take a day off work to make a GP appointment. They are open on weekends too, which helps people who are working.” ABMU primary care programme manager Lowri Hartson has overseen the commissioning of the new services, and is keen to see pharmacies extending their opening hours further. She said: “Until recently, only two pharmacies in the health board area were commissioned to open on a Sunday. “Now we have commissioned 10 pharmacies to open on Sundays and another six open voluntarily. They open on staggered hours to make sure a pharmacy is always open.” Pharmacy manager Debra Hughes (left) says customers at Lloyds Pharmacy at Baglan Moors are delighted that the dispensary now stays open until 10.30pm on week nights and 9pm on Saturdays. “One worried mum pulled up late one night with a poorly child in the back of the car,” she said. “It’s when you can help in those sorts of circumstances that you don’t mind giving up your Saturday night!” Find out if your local pharmacy is offering the service by visiting this link and entering your postcode. http://www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk/LocalServices/?s=Pharmacy

A WALK A WEEK (Tawe Tours -
Amman Valley 'Twrch Trywth Trail'. Distance:1 mile. Difficulty: Easy. Parking: Garnant. A circular walk around Glanamman following the information boards telling the story of the ‘Twrch Trywth’ from ‘Culwch & Olwen’ which is contained in ’The Mabinogion’, an old text full of stories of our land. The boards also give information about the area.
Brecon Railway (Middle). Distance:10 miles. Difficulty: Easy. Parking: Coelbren, Penrhos, Ystradgynlais, Ystalyfera, and Pontardawe. A cycle path now replaces the tracks of the railway link from Coelbren to Ystradgynlais. This then becomes a grassed walking path until you get down to Ystalyfera where the cycle path returns going all the way to Pontardawe.
Craig Gwladus Tramroad Distance: 1.5 miles. Difficulty: Easy. Parking: Craig Gwladus Car Park. A walk along part of a tramroad, which ran from the mine to the valley below. At one end was an incline run by a steam winding engine, some remains of the engine house are still present. A return walk in the woods above can turn this into a challenging circular walk.
Penllergaer Park (Carriage Drive)
Distance: 1.5 miles. Difficulty: Easy. Parking: Penllergaer Car Park (£). Once the private garden of fox-talbot a pioneer of photography. This walk takes you down the carriageway which would have led to the main house. Near the old site of the main house is an observatory where some of the first pictures of the moon were taken.

COMMON POISONS AND FOREIGN BODIES
How common is this problem? Unfortunately, this problem is far too common. On a daily basis, somewhere in the UK a pet’s life is endangered or extinguished as a result of poisoning or foreign body exposure. What is the difference between a poison and a foreign body? Poison – This is a substance with the capacity to cause any living animal to succumb to illness or even death. Foreign body – This is an object found within your pet’s body that should not naturally be there. They commonly enter via ingestion or penetration of the skin but sometimes they can also get stuck in the ear, eye or airways. What type of poisonous substances and foreign bodies are there? The table below has been designed to include the most common dangers seen.
Poisonous Food Items
Poisonous Household Foreign Bodies Items Chocolate Anti-freeze Bones Alcohol/caffeine Rat poison Stones Grapes/raisins Slug pellets Sticks Onion/garlic Weed killers Fruit stones Cooked bones Batteries Needles/nails Xylitol (sweetener) Human medication Corn on the cob Avocados Lilies Coins Mushrooms Daffodils Fish hooks Salty/fatty foods Mistletoe Toys Macadamia nuts Cleaning products Socks/underwear Yeast dough Permethrin* Dummy teats *Permethrin – This ingredient can be found in certain flea and tick spot-on products for use in dogs. This must never be administered to cats.
A Complete and Comprehensive Veterinary Service All Under One Roof High Street, Clydach SA6 5LN Tel: 01792 842437 www.animaldoctors.co.uk
Opening Hours Monday to Friday: 8.30am - 18.00pm Saturday: 9.00am - 13.00pm
Are there any signs I should look out for? Poisoning – Signs vary greatly depending on the type of poison. They can include gastrointestinal signs (drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite), liver failure (jaundice, weakness, vomiting, dull demeanor), kidney failure (increased thirst and urination, smelly breath, reduced appetite, vomiting) and internal bleeding (collapse/weakness, pale gums, elevated heart rate and vomiting blood). Foreign body - Signs of a gastrointestinal foreign body can include abdominal pain/discomfort, reduced appetite, frequent vomiting, dehydration and difficulty passing faeces. What should I do if I think my pet has eaten something that it shouldn’t have? It is paramount that you contact your veterinarian immediately, especially as foreign bodies are extremely painful and some poisons act very quickly. Do not make your pet sick or wait to see if the foreign body will pass as this can lead to further complications! When faced with a suspected poisoning, remove your pet from the hazard and/or wash off any offending contaminant material from their haircoat with warm soapy water if possible. Also try to record the following information to present to your veterinarian: 1) poison exposed to, 2) how much they have been exposed to, 3) how long ago they were exposed and 4) any signs of illness seen. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our practice on 01792 842437.

Spring is Sprung and the Working with Nature project is well and truly buzzing with excitement at the work done, and the work to come! We have been working hard over the last 21 months to integrate into communities and wild spaces throughout Neath Port Talbot; bringing together residents and groups with their local nature spots has been a joy to behold and something we are happy to keep doing for 2 more years! We are delighted to have reached out to and engaged with over 500 residents across NPT, but really want to meet more of you! If you have ever wanted to get crafty in nature, or to learn about managing woodlands or just meet like-minded people, get involved with our ever growing project! We work across 13 sites (to date) and engage in at least 4 volunteer task days a month as well as numerous engagement activities and events, so there is plenty of scope and opportunities for everyone to get involved and find something they enjoy, whether it is hands on habitat management, or getting into natural crafts such as green woodworking or willow weaving, there is something for everyone. Improve your health and well-being, learn new skills, meet new people and help to manage, conserve and protect our counties stunning natural sites! Thanks to new funding, we are now able to work across all wards of NPT, not just the rural ones, giving us access to a number of new and beautiful wild nature sites! To rejoice in this, we are organising a program that will celebrate Local Nature Reserves across the county; running events and activities that promote the amazing biodiversity and beauty of Neath Port Talbot. Our county is blessed to be home to five stunning Local Nature Reserves; Cwm du Glen and Glanrhyd Plantation, Swansea Canal, Eaglesbush Valley, Bryn Tip and Pant-y-Sais Fen. Each site offers a great range of biodiversity and opportunities to explore either on your own or as part of a group. Join us for a range of nature walks, including bird, flower, spider and otter walks, and other nature activities such as foraging, tree identification and habitat creation. For information, please contact us either via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or follow and message us on Facebook @WorkingWithNatureNPT. 49

NEW STAGE SCHOOL OPENS IN GLYNNEATH Arts Academy is a new stage school that launched in November last year, and currently offers dance and performing arts classes in the Glynneath Town Hall every Saturday during school terms. Founded by two local sisters who have completed their professional training in London, Chloe and Elise had their first taste of the arts on stage as von Trapp children in The Sound Of Music at the Resolven Miners Welfare Hall in the 90s and have dedicated their lives and careers to the industry ever since. Chloe explains that “our vision has always been to return to our community, to share our skills and passion for the performing arts, and give other youngsters the same opportunities that we enjoyed, watching them take part in local productions and getting the chance to shine on the stage. Our mission is to discover and nurture fresh talent within our communities and to revive the tradition of staging musicals and plays in our villages, just like it used to be when we were growing up.” The Arts Academy are very excited to be staging their first Gala Performance on Saturday 23rd June 2018 in the Glynneath Town Hall, and a share of the proceeds will be donated to the Resolven Miners Welfare Regeneration Project, a project which the sisters are very passionate about. The other half of the proceeds will be used to promote performing arts events at the Glynneath Town Hall. The show, A Night At The Theatre, will showcase the students’ progress so far, and will consist of musical theatre numbers and acting pieces, and promises to be a wonderful night out…for the community…by the children of the community. Support for the Arts Academy stage school, and for this inaugural show, has been fantastic so far, and both Chloe and Elise can’t wait to show off the wonderful, homegrown talent that they have uncovered in our valleys. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Arts Academy on 07582 036542, or by visiting the Arts Academy FaceBook page (search for artsoacademy), or by calling in to the stage school classes on a Saturday. The Arts Academy offers dance classes every Saturday from 10:00am to 11:00am, and acting and singing classes from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Anyone from 6 to 18 years old is encouraged to attend, and all abilities are welcome. Trial sessions are available for new students, where they can attend a whole day for free to see if they enjoy the Academy. Apart from the dancing, singing and acting classes, the academy also helps transform students into well-rounded individuals, with essential life skills, ready to embrace any opportunities that may come their way. More importantly, these young stars put their phones down for a few hours, have a load of fun, keep fit and make lifelong friends along the way.
Two lucky readers will win a pair of tickets each for the Arts Academy’s Gala Performance on 23rd June 2018. All you have to do is answer this question: “Which Academy Award-winning and Triple Threat actress was born on 22 June, the day before the curtain goes up on our young performers in A Night At The Theatre?”. If you know the answer, like the Arts Academy FaceBook page and leave a comment for us on our Night At The Theatre event page. Two winners will be selected on 16 June 2018 and notified via FaceBook. If you don’t win, don’t worry, you can still come along with the whole family and enjoy the production.

Today I want to talk about British Standard 8415. This is the basic minimum standard to which memorials should be fixed in the U.K. Even though there is a basic standard that fixers must fix to, there are various ways in which memorial masons can improve their fixing to ensure a high quality, long lasting and safely fixed memorial. An instance of this is dowelling; a memorial must be fixed using stainless steel dowelling in order to comply with the standard. These dowels are sold in six inch lengths and will meet the basic requirement of BS 8415. When we fix we will cut the dowel to the length of the dowel holes and so increase the length of the dowels. This will never be seen by the customer but it does represent a more secure fix. Another example would be our use of lockdown sleeves to ensure that the joint between the base and foundation of a lawn memorial is secure and not reliant on cement. It also means that if the memorial has to be removed we can do that without taking a hammer and chisel to the joint. I have served on the British Standard committee and these measures are not required to comply with that standard, but we have made a commitment to fixing memorials as safely and securely as possible and that means for us a commitment to fixing above the requirements of the standard. This, in our view, is the right focus for our company and we believe that quality workmanship, even if it is not immediately visible, has brought us a reputation for excellence both within our industry and from the people we serve.

Recipe PORK LOIN BRAISED IN MILK
Cooking in milk seems a little unnatural to us Brits for some reason (unless it’s puddings of course!), but this recipe changed my mind once and for all, and I’m on the lookout for more milk-based recipes. I don’t think there’s a better way to enjoy pork than this...
