Editor’s Foreword …AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT. Well, that was a year, wasn’t it? Gone in the blink of an eye, once again. We’ve had the best summer weather since I was a boy for a lengthy spell – so much so that we can’t even really grumble at the cold and wet this winter. This year we learned that the price of vegetables shoots up if the weather is too dry/ wet/warm/cold*. (*delete as appropriate). We learned that, if you sustain it long enough, nobody bats an eye at record fuel prices. We learned that, in news and in politics, the actual truth now has no value whatsoever, at least to those from within the two communities. At time of writing (mid November), we still don’t know what “Brexit means Brexit” means. We learned that the United Nations have declared austerity politics has been nothing more than an ideological war against the poor and disadvantaged. We learned that, while there is no ‘magic money tree’ for the NHS, public services, the sick etc., money can always be found to buy the support of others, or to pay for the weddings of people who already have more than enough themselves, or to throw a party celebrating whatever Brexit is. It’s become such a dirge of nonsense, corruption and dishonesty that, frankly, I’ve almost stopped paying attention. My gut feeling is that we’ve been casting votes when we should have been building gallows. And so on to the season of goodwill! For the next few weeks, love it or loathe it, practically the entire country will be in Christmas mode (of course, the shops have already been in this mode for a couple of months now). I do hope they don’t repeat the ‘Black Friday’ thing this year – it really is a sickening spectacle of greed, condensed into a single day. I can’t help but feel that it doesn’t suit this side of the Atlantic. Kids, games, cooking, eating and making merry are things that do us all a bit of good, if we can remove the other distractions in life long enough to enjoy them. Try not to do yourself an injury (either personal or financial), take some time to relax and enjoy the company of others, and I’ll see you on the other side. I sincerely wish you all a very, very happy Christmas. Nadolig Llawen i chi gyd. Until next year...

NEW BUILDINGS AT FLAGSHIP SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENED
The latest new buildings in a flagship Welsh medium school development which is part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s £123m schools modernisation programme have been officially opened. Councillor Peter Rees, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture, was in the Swansea Valley last month to open the new facilities at Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera Bro Dur. The multi-million project to modernise the Welsh medium school, which has a 40-year history, has seen the creation of a 3 -19 all-through “middle school” on two campuses. One is in the south at Sandfields, Port Talbot (Bro Dur), a new-build £19m school for pupils aged 11-16 living in the south of the county borough (constructed by Bouygues and due to be officially opened next month), with the other in the north (Ystalyfera) for pupils aged 3-19. On the north site, the project has included building a new block for secondary aged pupils, ‘Bloc Eirion’ which boasts new science labs, a canteen and a dining area, a sixth form common room and other teaching rooms - all providing pupils with 21st Century facilities and resources. Phase two at Ystalyfera involved creating the primary phase building, a two-storey teaching block to accommodate up to 200 pupils aged 3-11, with light and airy classrooms and modern facilities. The new “blocks” were opened by Councillor Rees on Wednesday with others in attendance including Council Leader, Cllr Rob Jones, Deputy Leader, Cllr Anthony Taylor, Chief Executive Steve Phillips and Aled Evans, Director of Education, Leisure and Lifelong Learning. The development of the two campuses is all part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s Strategic School Improvement Programme designed to modernise educational provision across the County Borough – helping ensure the right schools are in the right places and that they are capable of delivering an education fit for the 21st century digital-age learner. In the past decade, more than £123m has been ploughed into modernising Neath Port Talbot’s educational estate – a massive investment in the county borough’s next generations and the biggest of any council in Wales outside of Cardiff. The money has been provided on a 50:50 basis by Neath Port Talbot Council and the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme.

Buying your first home
Buying a home is probably the most important and expensive purchase you will make in your life. As a first time buyer, there are many things you need to consider and it is important to seek specialist advice. When buying your first home you should think about: Mortgages
We advise on: • Long Term Care and Fees • Wills • Powers of Attorney
Before looking at properties, speak to a bank or financial adviser about mortgages. Be informed about your financial position so that you know how much you can borrow. This will enable you to view properties that you know you can afford.
• Tax Advice
• Court of Protection Applications
When taking out a mortgage the lender will carry out a valuation on the property. This is to protect the lenders loan and will only detect severe problems with the property. It is advisable to have an independent survey carried out which will highlight any problems with the property.
• Buying and Selling a Property
• Estate Administration • Trusts
Additional Expenses to consider: Land Transaction Tax is only payable on properties over £180,000 and you should factor this into the costs when working out your budget. Legal costs for conveyancing and the cost of searches and the survey will also need to be accounted for. At Jennifer Melly Law our friendly and attentive conveyancing team can assist you. Our fully qualified solicitors are experienced in all areas of property law & will advise you at each step of the transaction – from having your offer accepted to getting the keys in the door. We will ensure that you are provided with an efficient and informative service.

WILD COMMUNITIES PROJECT COMES TO AN END
It’s been a wild three years for Brecknock Wildlife Trust’s ‘Wild Communities Project’ in the Upper Tawe Valley! You may have joined us on one of our wildlife walks around Ystradgynlais, you may have seen us gardening at Ystradgynlais hospital, library or allotments, at local schools, or you may have joined us yourself on our local nature reserves doing habitat work. Whatever your connection with the project has been, we feel that we have become a real part of the community and it’s been amazing to see how local people have embraced the wildlife of the area. Started In late 2015, with Big Lottery funding secured, Brecknock Wildlife Trust kick started a brand new project aiming to connect people and wildlife, focusing on attracting groups struggling historically from low employment, addiction and poor mental and physical health. Three years later, a fun loving bunch of staff, over 70 volunteers, three fantastic trainees, countless public events, innumerable reserve sessions and gardening sessions; and we have more than achieved the aims of the project and have made some incredible wildlife discoveries and lifelong friendships along the way. Now, with funding finished, its time for the team to say goodbye its current setup, but the project will continue in the form of a People and Wildlife Officer who will continue the work of the project in the area, so keep your eyes on the Facebook page: ‘Brecknock Wildlife Trust, @WTSWWBrecknock’.
The team, Chris, Sarah and Pauline would all like to thank everybody that has been involved in making this project a massive success on so many levels and hope very much that the love for wildlife in the area that the project has inspired continues for a long time to come.

FOR DECEMBER 2018
Photograph by Jeanine Bishopp If you’d like to see your photo on The Weather Outlook send it to email@example.com
by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
December looks set to offer a mixed complexion with rain at times across the region, tempered by drier and brighter spells of weather. Indications are that in general, temperatures look unlikely to serve up any sustained cold passage of weather during the month, and whereas the temperature gradient alters with height, lower levels will probably see any rain staying as rain, with higher levels for a short period of time potentially at risk from change as the rain fleets between sleet and snow. Past years have also flagged up black ice as being the most major traffic threat, a consideration for this year too. However, models are fairly consistent in delivering a milder than average month, with rainfall on or above the average. Expect any high pressure to deliver blue skies and frosts by night, but the overall theme would tend to suggest a mild and damp Christmas, with only a slender chance of a White Christmas, Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year! Jonathan Powell, Sunday, November 11th 2018

We are excited to announce our New Psychotherapist and Counsellor at Cristina’s Wellbeing Chiropractic. Hi, My name is Christos Zenios and I am currently undertaking my PhD degree with the speciality on the assessment and prevention of aggressive behaviours. Graduating with my MSc and BSc degrees, I became a registered member in the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists. Having worked in several clinics and health centres for years, I gained the knowledge and experience on treating children, adolescents, adults and the elderly with a variety of conditions and problems. These include symptoms of depression and anxiety, phobias, traumas, addictions, isolation, divorce, bereavement and difficulties that couples and families frequently face.I always tend to offer my clients a safe and comfortable environment to express and understand themselves under a strictly confidential way. I follow an integrative approach by implementing evidence-based interventions specifically to each of my clients in order to meet their individual needs. So, I invite you to come over for the purpose to find under my guidance, your inner power to overcome the obstacles in your life.
Talking to someone is always the first step. Christos is available on Thursday evening and Friday. For more information phone us at 01639 699573 or to Book Online go to http://wellbeingchiropractic.co/book-an-appointment/

You CAN learn to speak Welsh – and QUICKLY! GUARANTEED If, like me, you have tried learning Welsh in the past and given up, lapsed or just couldn’t find the time to make any meaningful progress, sit up and pay attention, you WILL want to hear this! I’m certainly not the first Welshman to lament not being brought up with the language; there are many of us who have felt robbed of our linguistic heritage by, shall we say, past affairs. But of course, there are many reasons for wanting to learn to speak Welsh that vary from person to person, and on the course I discovered that people from all over the world were learning Welsh with SSIW, some purely for the love of learning. Anyway, before I digress any further I want to tell you about the SAY SOMETHING IN WELSH 6 MONTH INTENSIVE COURSE that I stumbled on 7 months ago. I know a few people who have faithfully attended evening classes year after year to learn Welsh, and who still don’t have the confidence to join a conversation in Welsh. The SSIW 6 Month course is an exciting new development for those that fall into this category. My interest was piqued by the bold MONEY BACK GUARANTEE promised on the course – if you don’t feel that you have increased your confidence enough to speak Welsh by the end of the 6 months, they will refund your money, no quibbles, no fuss. Your only commitment is to put in 2 – 4 hrs per week at your own leisure. But let’s be honest, not everything suits everyone and, should you find yourself part of something that you can’t enjoy, isn’t it a nice thought that it won’t cost you anything? So… about the course. 6 months to learn a language is no mean feat at all, but you will be astounded at how well your brain copes with a deluge of new information. The course itself is designed to exploit your brain, the intensity is ramped up and slacked off throughout (co-founder Aran Jones explains the method in his book ‘High Intensity Language Training’, available on Amazon). Mistakes are positively encouraged, which feels a little strange and it’s all a bit of a roller-coaster at first, but a few sessions in and you realise the genius of the method. This isn’t forcing yourself to remember things, it’s more like passing through each lesson and finding out later that it actually went in! There is no written or grammar work on the course – this isn’t about gaining qualifications, it’s about learning to speak a language, and by the end of the course you’ll have the structure of the language firmly in place and plenty of vocabulary.
In addition to this, there are daily online video group chats that will get you used to having a conversation, and shake off those nerves. These are scheduled at different
times each day to try and cater for as many as possible, but they are a risk free way to try out your new words and phrases in an informal session. They usually start with a Q&A in English and then an hour of relaxed Welsh conversation. The cost is cheaper than you’d imagine, and I’m willing to bet a heck of a lot cheaper than getting to the same level of fluency by traditional means. The cost of the 6 month course is £40 per month for the duration of the course, there is also an option to learn at a slower pace, 6 minutes per day, at £10 per month. I’m writing a passage in Welsh below, without any checking, just to demonstrate to anyone who’s given up on Welsh that you could do this in 6 months (by the way, as I mentioned, this is written as spoken… the grammar work starts now for me) On i’n arfer meddwl bod dysgu Cymraeg rhy anodd, ond on i’n anghywir. Dw i’n hapus iawn gyda faint dw i wedi dysgu gyda SSIW. Fyddai i ddweud wrth unrhywun pwy sydd yn moyn dysgu cymraeg i drio defnyddio fe. Mae’r gwersi yn mwynhauach iawn, ac mae pob un yn herr. Mae diddorol iawn sut y broses yn waith, ac eich ymenydd gallu delio mor llawer o wybodaeth mor gyflym bod hi’n synnuol. I’m willing to bet that this course would be an amazingly successful Christmas gift for someone you know who wants to learn – but visit saysomethingin.com first to see all of the options (and languages!) available.

PREPARE YOUR CAR FOR WINTER DRIVING Drivers in Powys are being urged by the county council to prepare their car for winter driving. Adverse weather and longer periods of darkness makes driving more hazardous. Sometimes conditions can be extreme, as we have found out over recent winters, with prolonged periods of heavy snow and floods. Driving in the winter is very different than in other times of the year so Powys County Council’s Road Safety Unit has issued the following tips to help drivers prepare their vehicles for winter driving.
- Have your vehicle serviced and get anti-freeze tested - Check your lights, brakes and the battery are in good working order - Check the conditions of your tyres; particularly the tread and pressures - Make sure your windscreen and windows are clear and regularly top-up your screen washer levels - Make sure your wipers are in good order and work well - Make sure you carry a spade, torch and a mobile phone. Keep a bottle of water and high-energy food in case you break down. Carry extra clothing, including a warm coat, gloves and hat - Drive slowly, with smooth, gentle application of accelerator, steering and, particularly, brakes
RUGBY SUPPORTERS MIXED CHOIR Recruiting MALE TENORS and BASS SINGERS
- Beware of black ice. If the vehicle starts to skid, gently lift off the accelerator and steer in the direction of the skid Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Road Safety, said: “In order to minimise collision risk, drivers need to adapt their driving to the different conditions. Our tips will help drivers cope better with the various seasonal weather hazards. “Short-term weather forecasts are now very accurate so listen to local and national weather broadcasts. Tell someone your destination, what time you expect to arrive and avoid making your journey unless it is absolutely necessary. “Make sure you know and understand the hazards and risks of all types of weather conditions, especially ice, snow and fog, before you set off on your journey.
Wednesday nights from 7.00pm @ NEATH RFC “Finally, clear your windows and mirrors completely of snow and ice before you set off.”

COMMUNITY DEFIBRILLATOR INSTALLED IN MEMORIAM Much of the Ystrad/Abercrave and surrounding areas were greatly shocked to learn of the sudden passing of well known local businessman Mark Burdett last July. Mark was widely respected in the community and was best known through his many years running the family business, Continental Service Station. In honour of his memory and his kind spirit, the family have now installed a Defibrillator for use in emergencies by any in the community. In addition to this, all of the staff at the Continental site have received training in the use of the defibrillator. The Burdett family would like those at risk to take note of the location of the unit so that they are aware of it should the need arise. The unit is placed on the front wall of the building, near the reception door, clearly marked and visible in a yellow and green wall box.
Would like to wish everyone
We look forward to serving you in the new year Continental Service Station

Hi Phil, Thought I would let you know my experience and thoughts of Remembrance Sunday this year in Ystradgynlais. I arrived at the War Memorial at Gorsedd Park at about 10.45 by which time there was a sizeable crowd in the area. As 11 O’clock approached it started to become obvious that the expected parade was not going to be turning up on time. People were obviously upset and one or 2 people I spoke to were quite angry about the situation but due to the nature of the expected ceremony nobody was going to complain out loud. Around the UK and the world people were standing in silence at 11 am to mark the end of the First World War, In Ystradgynlais people were stood muttering in bewilderment. It was midday before the church service ended and they processed to the War Memorial led by the vicar of St Cynogs church. Apart from the 100 or so people that had been standing waiting that had missed out the all important 11 am silence and last post, the other issue is of Remembrance Day being hijacked by the church. Remembrance day is supposed to be a secular ceremony reflecting all the different faiths and even those without any faith or religion that fought and died for the freedom we all enjoy today. The ceremony appears to have taken place inside the C of E church not at the public war memorial. Considering the import of this years ceremony I can’t help feeling upset and very angry at the church of excluding so many people from the celebrations. All the best, Mark Flat roof specialist dv

WHY OLDER PETS NEED DIFFERENT CARE - PART 1 Older animals have different needs just like older humans do. We need to adapt our care in order to optimise our pet’s health and happiness. Diet and weight management - Older animals will usually move less so a lower calorie diet could be the option to prevent weight gain. There are many specific diets around for senior patients which should benefit their bodies. We can advise you on particular ones if requested. The diet selected depends on the species and the individual - older cats are more likely to lose weight but older dogs are more likely to gain weight - either way, the diet must be altered accordingly. You may offer your pet joint support within their diet to help support the skeletal system. An older pet’s immune system may stop working as efficiently so it might be beneficial to add vitamins and minerals to their daily intake - talk to one of our vets for details. Mobility - Older animals will have reduced mobility meaning they have a restricted range of movements in their joints. Shorter, more frequent walks are best and you should try to control and monitor the amount of time the animal spends outdoors. A large, sudden increase in exercise level will negatively impact on their joints. It is important to recognise when your pet is in pain and try different methods to minimise it. Some pets enjoy hydrotherapy, being massaged, physiotherapy or acupuncture in order to relieve pain. Each animal is different and if you notice your animal in pain, it is essential to contact the vet. We can determine the cause, provide painkillers and formulate a suitable exercise programme to increase the quality of your pet’s life. Dental - Most pets only have one set of adult teeth so they are not replaced. Bad breath, bright red gums and stained teeth are key signs of tooth disease - a process which occurs over a prolonged period of time. Periodontal disease occurs when plaque on the teeth is converted to tartar due to substances in the saliva. It then lies at the baseline of the gum causing the bone beneath it to resorb. This can be very painful and can lead to other chronic diseases. To prevent this disease, you can get toothbrushes for your pets, or an easier method (but much less effective) would be to provide your animal with low-calorie dental chews. If disease has already occurred, dental surgery is the best, and often the only, option.

Have patience! - Lots of animals lose control of their internal organs. This affects their behaviour and comfort within the house, for example, many animals may start urinating indoors. Remember this may be embarrassing for them and telling them off or punishing them will not improve their bladder strength. It is best to ensure the animal has the option to go outdoors frequently. They may become more out of breath in a shorter period of time on walks, because their heart and lungs become less efficient at providing the muscles with oxygen and removing any waste products. You should not panic if this happens but you should immediately reduce the intensity of the exercise. Older pets require monitoring more and if you notice any changes in breathing, behaviour, physical appearance or attitude, you MUST see one of our vets as soon as possible.

With the weather getting noticeably colder and wetter, I thought I would offer a few suggestions to help anyone tending a memorial guard against unnecessary problems. • If you have a marble memorial, do not allow flowers to lay on the marble for too long; they will discolour the marble and this staining may prove difficult to remove. • If there is a flower container hole present in your memorial it should have a drainage hole to allow the free flow of water away from the container hole. If water is present it will damage any joint if allowed to freeze and expand. • Ideally flower container holes in granite bases should have a container sized hole to allow maximum drainage away from the joint. This will also allow for a longer, more stable flower container. • If you can identify any gaps in pointing, parting of joints or movement, it is probably time to ask your memorial mason to carry out an assessment for you. • Remember that gilding is delicate and we should be very careful when cleaning lettering lest we remove the gold leaf.
Finally, everyone here at Vale Memorials would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

for DECEMBER 2018 by Izabella Vlahavas Aries : The new moon in your travel zone on the 7th is one more indication that you are feeling restless. Upheavals due to work situations may act as a motivator towards moving on and moving forward in some new venture. There are good aspects for partnerships and joining forces to create a strong team at this time, that will help you succeed. New decisions can be made on the 22nd with the full moon in your home zone, helping you to follow your heart. Taurus : A lot of positive energy will be available to you from close partnerships throughout this month with good communication and support. Close deals and make your new plans firm up by the 22nd and you will get the responses you look for. Lots of social invitations from friends and family during the weeks ahead keep you busy. Watch out for friction or jealousies between conflicting groups. Act with diplomacy wherever you can. Plans to go away may not work out for the time being. Gemini : Things go well as you have developed skills for planning and meeting deadlines. You use your creative imagination and hit targets. You have good outcomes in your one to one partnership zone and get surprized by the responses you get. The new moon falls in this part of your chart on the 7th indicating new beginnings or new plans or both. A forceful side of our nature manifests in your career zone over the next few weeks. Cancer : It s all go for you in the coming weeks, as much as you would like to relax, you feel spurred into action. Circumstances in your daily routines increase momentum and you give yourself new personal targets that will keep you on your toes. The full moon on the 22nd falls in your own sign and helps you to sort out any issues still pending that need closure. It will feel like a load off your shoulders as you wave goodbye to the past. A new chapter opens up before you. Leo : You need to get on with things that you enjoy doing the most. The perfect path would be linked to personal goals and would be very individual to you. You probably have many talents you have not explored yet. Now is the time to try new things and learn new skills. You have lots of potential and staying power to go for something new and make new beginnings. Risks are always involved so self-confidence is key. The new moon in this part of your chart on the 7th will push you forward in whatever field you choose. Virgo : Home is highlighted for you this month where you can re-charge your batteries and find the supportive atmosphere you need. If you have been pushing yourself too hard, now may be a great time to recuperate your energies. Mars in your one to one partnership zone indicates both support and friction from partners. Some of your plans may not go exactly as planned, so patience is needed. Look ahead at the bigger picture and do not let delays put you off. Libra : As Venus which is your natural ruling planet transits your money zone over the next few weeks, you will be in good spirits. Good relationships with close family and friends will make this a fulfilling time for you. Also you will be kept very busy. A less turbulent time ahead is forecast for you, as long as you are direct with others in your immediate environment about your demands. The full moon on the 22nd falls in your career zone and will push you to finalize a proposal. Scorpio : A mixed month of variety, both concerning who you spend time with and also your pursuits. Lots of opportunities to expand resources and invitations to use your own individual skills and talents will open new doors for you. You may be stuck for choice. Make practical decisions 53
rather than emotional ones. The new moon in your finance sector on the 7th helps you go for the best most lucrative offers. This also marks a new beginning of some sort. Sagittarius : A full and interesting month for you, with plenty of motivation to get you involved with social life and activities. The closure of a deal around the 22nd concerning joint finances or an inheritance will end a dispute and give you a sense of relief. This enables you to put in behind you and look to the future. Changes are good for you and It may be good to look into new exercise or diet plans. Mercury enters your own sign on the 12th giving you the gift to persuade others into your way of thinking. Capricorn : Saturn in your sign makes you feel serious and patient. It is your natural ruling planet and makes you feel more at ease with yourself. You like boundaries and are good at discipline. Use these qualities to your best advantage. The build-up of positive planets is making you very sure of yourself and this helps you to make decisions and take the lead in projects. Friendships go well for you at this time, and you will find allies and strong supporters. Aquarius : You are forceful and direct in anything to do with your finances. You follow a direction you have set out for yourself and you keep yourself grounded. The new moon in your friendship zone on the 7th indicates new connections, that are exciting and Jupiter in this part of your chart indicates gain from these. You can afford to be selective. A smoother time at work and respect from your colleagues helps the day tick over. Pisces : Forceful and confident, as the holiday Xmas season is here and you want to make the most of family and friends. A great time for work and career and plenty of good aspects giving you new ideas and potential money spinners. Take advantage of these for the future. The new moon on the 7th is in this part of your chart so a new proposition is very likely on the table, which will give you a significant boost in reputation.
The year ahead for
At exactly 0400 am gmt on the 22nd November 2018 the sun enters the sign of Sagittarius and for all of you born with this sun sign, the following ingredients colour your year ahead. Modifications and adjustments need to be made according to your own particular time, day and place of birth which are individual only to you. PERSONALITY – A year ahead that helps you to see the other person’s point of view. You will be diplomatic and fare in your dealings with others. You exude charm and can be helpful to others, who turn to you for advice. MONEY – You are resourceful and eager to make your finances tick over and make profits for yourself and your family. This is a very lucrative time for you, as you find new opportunities come your way. You feel strong and capable and your self-belief goes a long way towards your success in ventures. LOVE – The emotional side of your character is cooler and more reserved than usual, as a practical side to your nature makes you think before you jump into situations. You may idealize your partner and have very high expectations of him or her. GENERAL – A very unusual year ahead for you, Sagittarius, as you are both spirited and assertive in all you do. You inspire others and get a great deal of support and headway to succeed in projects. This will be a very positive time ahead for you. 54

MAKE YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS PUDDING
Making your own Christmas pud really isn’t as difficult as you might imagine, and it’s streets ahead of buying one in a shop. Why not make your own this month, and have it ready for the big day? This recipe serves 8
100g raisins 150g sultanas 150g figs, chopped 75g candied peel, chopped 100g glace cherries, halved 80ml brandy 1 orange juice and zest 100g butter, unsalted, softened, plus a little extra for greasing the bowl 165g Dark muscovado sugar 3 eggs, beaten 100g self raising flour 100g breadcrumbs 30g ground almonds 1 eating apple, grated Use a medium sized non-metallic mixing bowl, add the dried fruit, brandy and juice and zest of the orange. Cover and soak overnight. Add the remaining ingredients and mix until well combined. Grease a 1.25 litre pudding basin and line the base with non-stick baking parchment. Spoon the pudding mixture into the basin, don’t fill the basin completely it will need room to expand while cooking, and press down well.

Butter a piece of foil and pleat it (the fold allows for expansion), and cover the pudding with the buttered side in. Wrap the foil down around the edges of the basin and tie with some kitchen string to keep all of the steam in while cooking. Tie the string to form a handle to lift the hot basin out of the pan. Put the basin in a large pan and pour in boiling water to about half way up the basin. Cover, bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 4 hours, topping up regularly with more boiling water. Leave the pudding to cool then lift from the pan. Replace the string, foil and paper with more of the same. Store the pudding in a cool, dark place until Christmas. Before serving on Christmas Day, steam in exactly the same way for 1 1/2 hours until piping hot. Turn the bowl upside and ease the pudding out on to a plate and serve in your favourite way.
