Editor’s Foreword GREEN GATHERING I’m off once more to the Green Gathering in Chepstow this month. Apart from looking forward to some brilliant music, listening to incredible poets, sampling wonderful food, I will immerse myself in some of the political debates. It was encouraging that so many young people voted at the last election but to me it was obvious that they were always interested in politics. They just didn’t see a main stream political party that offered them any hope. Last year I drove back from the festival on the Thursday night to Neath, where our Labour Constituency Party was having a debate on whether we ought to back Corbyn or Smith at the coming leadership election. In the end we decided not to have a vote but leave it to the individual. But I remember stating then that we needed to engage with the young and that many people thought we had become irrelevant. The next day, back at the festival, there was a debate, ‘Is J.C the new Messiah’. It was packed. It was a really interesting, lively debate with claims and counter claims backed up by intelligent and passionate reasoning. After the debate a number of people approached, to question me on a number of issues. I don’t believe Corbyn is the new Messiah, but then again I don’t believe in the first one! But he at last is a leader that is offering a radical, socialist alternative. So why are the young turning to Corbyn? In the main it’s because he believes in putting people before profit. And once you do that, then, environmental issues and welfare issues are at the forefront. In the main the young are more focussed on a fairer more just society and sustainable food and energy that doesn’t endanger our World. They are fearful of multi-nationals that determine government’s policies, control the media and are ruthless in their pursuit of money. So they don’t believe in fracking or other fossil fuels but want to see a serious commitment to renewable energies. They don’t believe in GM crops but would prefer to see more organic production. They definitely believe in our National Health Service. They want decent affordable housing and an education system that offers their children the opportunity to flourish. And one thing for certain – they don’t believe the media! My generation was brought up to believe in the BBC and that our press was the best in the world. If someone stated something as a fact, if challenged it was enough for them to say it was in ‘black and white, in the newspaper’. Whether our papers were ever more responsible or we were just incredibly naïve, I’m not sure, but the younger generation have always been sceptical and tend to gather their news from more reliable sources. And gather it they do, so the debates at the Green Gathering are lively events involving people far better informed than I am. Don’t get me wrong, I shall be spending most of my time at the festival, enjoying the music, having a beer or two, meeting up with friends, relaxing in a sauna and generally enjoying the whole scene. But I will take in a few of the debates and have my views and knowledge questioned yet again and come away, with a little bit of luck, a little wiser!

GOING FOR A STROLL We are so very fortunate to live in an area that has such an abundance of beautiful areas to walk in. After walks in the Gower and the Beacons July saw us returning to the stunning ‘waterfall walk’. Starting at Pontneddfechan we followed the old tramline past disused mines on our left and the river on our right. This part of the walk is easy walking. After a while we crossed a bridge and one by one the falls came into view. The second major fall is best viewed by leaving the footpath and walking on the stones of the river bed right up to the falls themselves, obviously this can only be undertaken when the river isn’t swollen. After an hour and a half we arrived at Pont Melin Fach, where we crossed the road and followed a path that ran close by the river but undulated up and down through the trees winding this way and that. The path is punctuated by tree roots, so you have to watch where you’re walking constantly. Eventually we arrived at a crossroads and stopped for a bite. We then had to negotiate a steep track of loose stones that led to a field. Now we were greeted by stunning views including Pen Y Fan on the horizon. We walked through the field and took the road towards Glynneath. Unfortunately one of our walker’s footwear had disintegrated under the ordeal and she decided that she needed to head for home by road, two of our fellow walkers kindly accompanied her. We turned off the road and headed for the Hepste. After 40 minutes or so we descended countless steps to Sgwd yr Eira. There were loads of people about enjoying the falls and the river. We walked under the falls and picked up our path on the other side of the river. A steep climb took us to the path to Dinas rock and a a further 45 minutes saw us past the rock and back at our car. In all a 4 ½ hour walk, that because of the terrain is hard on the knees and ankles….but well, well worth it! August’s walk will be on the North Gower. We’ll be setting off from Cwm Ivy car park and it will be primarily a beach walk from Whiteford Burrows to Rhossili beach. It’s fairly easy walking and should take about 4 hours including paddle! We’ll be setting off at 10 am. If it’s easier for people you could meet us at Pontardawe at 9.15, let us know. Everyone’s welcome but you must be responsible for yourself. OBSERVATIONS OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS One frequent condition I hear of, read about and treat is Plantar Fasciitis. This is an interesting condition to look at since there is no one trigger for it. This means it is a case of finding what has caused it rather than just doing the same treatment for everyone, although, there are set methods of treatment that seem to help in many cases, but they won’t necessarily work for every individual. According to the Mayo Clinic website “Plantar fasciitis (PLAN-tur fas-e-I-tis) is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes (plantar fascia). Plantar fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As you get up and move more, the pain normally decreases, but it might return after long periods of standing or after rising from sitting.” Plantar Fasciitis can be painful enough to prevent comfortable walking, which can have big knock-on effects to quality of life. What causes Plantar Fasciitis? In short, stressing the plantar fascia. OK, so what causes that? Well, lots of things. Tight calves and loss of strength or control in the muscles that help create the arch of the foot are two classic examples. These issues also have their causes e.g. tight calves can be caused from losing hip extension (bringing your leg behind you like when walking) and one of the claimed causes of losing the arches of the feet, according to various sources, is reduced stimulation of the plantar surface (sole) of the foot; often due to wearing thick or hard soled shoes. There are of course many possible causes for plantar fasciitis and any two people with the condition may need quite different treatment from each other. However, I will include some of the most common exercises to help ease the condition.
Stand with hands on wall, arms straight, elbows locked.
Keep the foot you are stretching behind you with heel and toes in line.
Gently push hips forward until moderate stretch is felt in calf.
Keep your heel on the ground.

Court of Protection – Acting as Deputy A Deputy is appointed by the Court of Protection to make decisions on behalf of someone who lacks mental capacity. There are two types of Deputy: • Personal Welfare Deputy – A Personal Welfare Deputy is able to make decisions regarding a person’s treatment and care when they lack capacity to make their own decisions. •
We advise on: • Long Term Care and Fees • Wills • Powers of Attorney
Property and Affairs Deputy – The Deputy will deal with the person’s financial affairs.
• Tax Advice
The responsibilities of the Deputy will be set out by the Court of Protection in an Order. The Deputy must always act in the person’s best interests and in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005. To safeguard the person subject to a Deputyship Order from fraud the Deputy must keep a record of all spending and accounts and they must also keep a record of all decisions they have made as Deputy. These records must be submitted to the Court of Protection each year and will be reviewed. Anyone over the age of eighteen can apply to become a Deputy and the Deputy is often a family member of the person subject to the Deputyship Order. Before becoming a Deputy a mental capacity assessment will need to be carried out. If the person to whom the Deputyship application relates is found to have capacity, then the application will not continue and it may be more appropriate to make a Lasting Power of Attorney. If the person does not have capacity then an application will be made to the Court of Protection. Here at Jennifer Melly Law we offer advice and guidance on how to make a Deputyship Application and can deal with the whole process for you. However, it is not always appropriate for a family member to become Deputy and it can sometimes be beneficial to appoint a professional to act as Deputy. At Jennifer Melly Law we are able to act as a professional Deputy if required and can discuss this in more detail at an appointment. We understand that this is often a difficult time and if you require advice regarding the above or assistance in making an application to become a Deputy please do not hesitate to contact Elizabeth Jones at Jennifer Melly Law on the contact details below.

FOR AUGUST 2017
Photo: ‘Summer Wheat Field’ by T. May If you’d like to see your photo on The Weather Outlook send it to us at email@example.com
by Jonathan Powell, Swansea Sound Weatherman
August is expected to offer some pleasant periods of dry, fine, and warm weather, with any particularly hot spells tending to end as most hot spells do, with thunderstorm activity, allowing for cooler conditions to sweep away the humidity. Therefore, with high pressure probably winning out more times than losing out, plenty of opportunity to get out and about and enjoy the last month of summer which on balance, has not been a complete disappointment as a season, in fact, far from it. However, it is unlikely to be plain sailing all of the time during the month, with pointers tending to favour mid-month onwards and into September as the pick of the potentially most driest times. August is likely to see temperatures generally flatten out so in retrospect by the time we reach September, an average to slightly above average August temperature wise is expected, with a slightly drier than average month forecast. Jonathan Powell, Sunday July 9th 2017

UK GOVERNMENT HOLDING WALES BACK BY DITHERING Wales Green Party leader, Grenville Ham, and Jonathan Bartley, co-leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, wrote to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on Wednesday. The Green Party Leaders are concerned that “unacceptable dithering” is putting the planned Swansea tidal lagoon project in jeopardy. Grenville Ham said “This UK Government is holding Wales back. “The Swansea tidal lagoon should be the corner stone for a new Welsh economy - spiraling out we could see new businesses, skilled jobs and 21st century innovation. But the Conservative Party is dithering on whether to support this excellent economic opportunity for Wales. We know that renewable energy is going to be one of the main areas of global economic growth over the next 50 years. We know Green Tech is the next industrial revolution and that the Tidal Lagoon can provide the blueprint for Welsh technology being exported to the world for the next 100 years. But the UK government is instead supporting technologies that should be consigned to the dustbin of history and are tearing up almost all support for clean energy. We have seen investment in British renewable energy fall off a cliff with a 95% decline in 2 years. The rest of the world are surging ahead and investing in this next industrial revolution creating skilled jobs and driving down their carbon emissions – but Wales is being left behind. It’s hugely frustrating to see this failure to give the Tidal Lagoon the go ahead and to jumpstart the new Welsh economy. It’s the only logical decision according to the Hendry Review.”

DACE - Swansea University
Life-changing Learning! Elaine Speyer graduated from the Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE), Swansea University with a First Class Honours Degree. Elaine always wanted to study for a degree and shortly after her son was born she read about DACE’s part-time BA (Honours) Humanities Degree in a community magazine. “The flexibility of the Degree was ideal for me especially as I was a young mum. I really enjoyed studying Psychology, Sociology and History at community venues throughout Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. I purposely chose evening classes to fit around my full time job and family life”. “Returning to study as an adult was very daunting at first but all of the students were in the same boat plus the support from tutors and staff made such a big difference”. Elaine’s studies have made a considerable impact on her career. Whilst working in an administration role in Barnardo’s, Elaine gained a Research Assistant Internship. “I love my job and I wouldn’t have gained this role if it wasn’t for my Degree studies”. “The Degree has changed my life - I can’t emphasise enough the difference it has made. Many doors have opened for me and I am very proud of my achievements!”
For further information on courses offered by DACE, please contact 01792 602211, e-mail email@example.com or visit www.swansea.ac.uk/dace

PET PASSPORTS With spring / summer fast approaching, this month we are going to look at the requirements of the Pet Passport System. The pet passport system applies to the movement of dogs, cats and ferrets across Europe. If you want to take your pet outside of Europe or bring them back to the U.K from outside of Europe then the requirements are specific to each country you wish to visit and so it is advisable to check before booking. Background to Pet Passports Pet passports were first introduced to the U.K in 2000. The main aim of the passport system was to keep the U.K free from rabies and other foreign diseases, which can be fatal. It has allowed free movement of pets across Europe, without the need for quarantine, meaning your pets can enjoy their summer holidays as well. Since 1st December 2014, the U.Ks pet passport system changed so that it is now in line with mainland Europe making it easier for you to travel. Requirements of the Pet Passport Before you travel it is always advisable to check what the latest requirements are since these change frequently and will depend on which countries you are visiting and how long you are visiting for. If you don’t follow the rules then your pet can be placed in quarantine for up to 4 months. Before booking your holiday, ensure that the company you are travelling with will accept your pet and how many pets you are allowed to take. It is worth remembering that if you are travelling separate from your pet then they must arrive in the country no more than 5 days before or after you. If you are returning to the U.K from a listed E.U country then the current requirements are: • Your pet has a microchip which can be read (this must be done before rabies vaccine) • Is at least 15 weeks of age at the time of travel • Has had a rabies vaccine (this must be given at least 21 days before travel and can only be given from 12weeks of age) • Has been treated for tapeworms between 1 and 5 days of re-entry to the U.K • Has been issued with a Pet Passport A Complete and Comprehensive • Is up to date with annual vaccinations

Getting a Pet Passport If you require a pet passport for your pet then please contact us in plenty of time before you travel. It is not difficult and takes about 30minutes to complete. You will need to bring your pet, your pets’ identification and vaccination history with you to the appointment.

COUNCILLORS LINET PURCELL and ANTHONY RICHARDS Plaid Cymru Councillors for PONTARDAWE Your voice on Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council PONTARDAWE CARNIVAL was a great success .Anthony was grateful to Council of icers who assisted him late on the Friday after a problem was discovered regarding dates but all went well. Linet and family particularly enjoyed the Duck race and appreciated Michelle’s efforts in “ shepherding “ the ducks who were reluctant to move! Congratulations to all the organisers . DISABLED PARKING – two issues 1 Anthony was asked to investigate when a disabled resident was ticketed for parking on double yellow lines. He found that , YES, Blue badge holders may park there but MUST display the clock which indicates at what time they parked. Let us know if you have any further problems 2 Linet is assisting a resident who is having dif iculty getting their Blue badge renewed . She discovered that the Council policy is that residents must produce medical evidence of their restricted mobility. However, GPs are advised NOT to write such letters and residents are told to get evidence from their consultant. This is causing delay and in the meantime this resident has no Blue Badge. Linet is pursuing this but, if you know someone whose Blue Badge is about to expire - BE WARNED and plan ahead. SWIM ENGLAND!!!? We were approached by parents who were concerned that their children learning to swim at Celtic Leisure were receiving certi icates marked “Swim England”!! Having contacted Celtic Leisure we found that they were equally unhappy about this! They explained that their swimming programmes were organised by Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) which suddenly rebranded itself as “Swim England”!! They are trying to organise new courses but have asked parents to be patient in the meantime. BRAVE THE SHAVE Kelly in the Greengrocers is raising funds for Macmillan nurses by having ALL of her lovely hair cut off in late August .Please sponsor her! FESTIVAL TIME! August 18th-20th The Procession, the FREE live music and the Craft stalls will take place over the weekend and provide us all with such a lovely community event - whatever the weather throws at us!! (We were nearly blown away last year! Fingers crossed for better weather this year!) THE NIGHT OUT YOUNG PROMOTERS SCHEME
Police Community Support Officers from Ystradgynlais Station have recently been involved with pupils from Year 5 at Ysgol Bro Tawe, Ystradgynlais working on ‘The Night Out Young Promoters Scheme.’ This involved working with the Young promoters taking them through the process of organising a professional performance for their community, funded by the Night Out community touring scheme. Over a series of six weekly sessions the children set ticket prices and start times, design posters and fliers, invite local VIPs and are responsible for marketing and promoting the event. Sessions are facilitated by Christine with the help of local Police Community Support Officers, giving the children an opportunity to get to know their local officers which helps builds trust and confidence and impacts on anti-social behaviour. The children were also subject to a visit from PC Flynn 106 and PC Thomas 699 who are Firearms Officers and also PC 942 Llewellyn from the Dog Section along with his dogs Rula and Monty. The performance took place on the 5th July and Circo Rum BaBa, a group of three 63
talented acteresses took part in the show called ‘The Crow House’. The event was very successful and enjoyed by parents, children, and the VIP guests which included County Cllr Mrs S McNicholas, Gaynor from Tesco in Ystradgynlais who sponsored the event and the Superintendent for Powys Mr Jon Cummins. Ystradgynlais Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to thank Tesco, Ystradgynlais for sponsoring the event and also Nigel from TLT who also provided soft drinks, cakes and crisps for the children.

Hwyl Signposting & Guidance INFORMATION OF SERVICES
“Hwyl” is part of the Local Primary Mental Health Support Service (LPMHSS) Neath Port Talbot. Our aim is to provide guidance and advice to people who need some assistance but not necessarily require a formal mental health assessment. For example someone who has become socially isolated or is having problems with benefits, housing, marital problems or similar. Whilst we may not be able to directly help them with all of these problems, we can help them to access the appropriate specialist advice and support agencies and third sector services. For example appointments with CRUSE, Stress Control, MIND, CAB, housing support agencies etc. We also provide social peer groups, walking groups, and an art group, all of which are facilitated and supported by the members. Our service is flexible and strives to meet the individual needs of people referred. We are easily contacted by telephone or email

NEW BREWERY IN THE SWANSEA VALLEY Ystradgynlais has a new craft ale microbrewery – 9 Lives Brewing. Robert Scott has been a freelance brewer for 18 years and in June this year had the opportunity to buy his own 5 barrel microbrewery. In the 18 years Robert has created award winning recipes having won numerous awards including CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Wales twice and has been entered into Roger Protz book – 300 More Beers to Try Before you Die! In the past Robert was also featured on the I Love Wales programme. In embarking on this new adventure Robert says “My aim is to create new and interesting beer alongside established styles that have proved so popular.” There are currently four craft ales available, Gold and thirst quenching 4.5% bitter, Dark a 4.0% ruby ale, Amber a 4% smooth session ale and Special at 5% is an extra strong bitter. Special is not the strongest ale that Robert makes because at Christmas he makes Strong which is nearly 7%.
ABERCRAF W.I. JULY 2017 MEETING REPORT
Vice President Mrs Sue Roberts welcomed members to the last meeting before the summer break. Apologies were received from Mrs E. Tyler, Mrs Ann James, Mrs Jean Wilds, Mrs Maggy Phillips-Talbot, Mrs Pat Battenbough and Mrs Margaret Jenkins. Members were pleased to see that the new stair lift had been installed in the hall. The meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem part in Welsh and part in English. Secretary Mrs Iris Lewis read the Minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Mrs Valerie Dalling gave a report on the Group’s finances. As the Group had not managed a day trip this year it was decided to investigate the chance of enjoying afternoon tea at a local venue which members have now visited on two occasions and had a wonderful time! The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Maureen Casagrande from WaterAid, a charity which raises funds for and, with partners, transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. 650 million people worldwide live without safe water, 2.3 billion worldwide live without a toilet. For every £1 invested in water and toilets, on average £4 is returned in increased productivity. The weight of water that women in Africa and Asia carry on their heads is commonly 20kg, the same as the average UK airport luggage allowance. It is only women and girls who fetch water and as a result girls do not have the chance for any education. WaterAid started in 1981 raising £25,000 in the first year. In 1981 Prince Charles became the first President. WaterAid is only used in Third World countries and is supported by all the water companies in the U.K The raffle was won by Mrs Valerie Jordan, and refreshments were most enjoyed, with a chance to catch up with other members and their recent activities. If you would like to come and “give us a try” we meet again on Friday 1st September in the Lesser Hall, Abercrave Welfare Hall at 2 p.m. For further details please contact Secretary Mrs Iris Lewis on 01639-730364.

As the summer is now here and many of us are spending time tending to family memorials I thought I would talk about the upkeep and maintenance of memorials. Lettering, if cut into granite, is most often finished in silver or gold leaf. Never be tempted to scratch or wipe into the letters as this could damage the leaf or paint. If your letters are in lead, whether raised or flush, speak to a memorial mason before attempting to clean them. Highly polished granite is easily cleaned with some soapy water or glass cleaner. Seek advice for the specific memorial before attempting to clean marble, Forrest of Dean or rustic granite. And if in any doubt ask a memorial mason.

Dear Phil, Yet again we are subjected to your left wing political ramblings in the Editorial, but this time I cannot allow it to pass unanswered. I sometimes wonder what planet you’re on! Nobody would argue that the events of Manchester, London Bridge or Grenfell Tower were horrific and something our country in its entirety should condemn, but scoring political points out of disaster as was seen blatantly on the Glastonbury stage or outside Grenfell Tower is beneath contempt. Indeed it was truly gutter politics. Your comments about the Prime Minister being “increasingly strange” are bewildering to say the least but even more laughable is your comment about her trying to broker a deal with terrorist sympathisers. I think you’re talking about the wrong leader – surely you must mean Corbyn, after all his background is littered with sympathy and talks with terrorists. Yes, I voted Conservative and proud to say I did so. I’m not financially wealthy, a liar or a carpet bagger, just an ordinary working person who pays her taxes and is sick to the back teeth of the left wing agenda being peddled by the likes of Corbyn and McDonald (sic) et al. At least we don’t take to Facebook etc. to spread lies about individuals in an effort to undermine democracy. Sincerely A. E. Watkins
ALLTWEN HEELS WI So far this year, we have welcomed several new members, which is great news. The Summer months continue to be busy for all our members. On June 21st, twenty two Ladies enjoyed the garden Party, at Margam Park, organised by the Glamorgan Federation. A wonderful buffet was enjoyed by all, entertainment, drinks and wonderful weather. July 16th, the BBC is filming ‘Street Auction’, in Pontardawe, and we have been asked by them, to provide a refreshment stall. I shall be posting when our TV appearance is due on screen! Our July meeting we welcomed Tori, who taught us the art of Belly dancing! July 12th saw members visit the Art Exhibition by our talented member, Julia Harris, at Aberglasney Gardens, a real treat . In August, we shall visit Moruzzi’s in Neath, for an evening of wine tasting and tapas. We shall also be present at the Pontardawe Fest, on August 19th, with a selection of home made cakes, so, hope to see many of you there. Our latest venture, is a plot at the Community gardens, Rhos, so far, we have planted out vegetables and flowers, and tidied up the plot. We are applying for grants, in the hope of buying a shed and equipment. Our September meeting will be all about CPR, and the use of a defibrillator, We see our WI as being a very positive part of the local Community, and you can see, from our wide range of activities, a very varied one. We have an FB page and we are also on Twitter. Our September meeting is on the 7th, 7.30 p.m. start, st Alltwen Community centre. All welcome. 79
