Greetings Philly Pet Lovers And welcome to another EXCITING issue of PHILLY Pet Pages − Your #1 Pet Directory in Print & Online!

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”

I

t’s not often that you can quote Charles Dickens in a pet publication, but this may be one of those times. The past year has been amazing for PHILLY Pet Pages in so many ways… but it was also the year we lost Frankie, our founding CEO (Canine Executive Officer). Frankie was an original, a true visionary who left some pretty big paws to fill. And although we could never replace him, we are very fortunate to have someone with Louie’s experience joining the Pet Pages team. And as a former rescue dog, Louie knows how important it is to carry on Frank’s mission to promote pet adoption.

LOUIE New CEO

Canine Executive Officer & Former Shelter Dog

Topics in Orthopedics:

Lameness in your pet

L

ameness is the most common reason that your veterinarian may refer you to a veterinary orthopedic surgeon. Your input as an owner can be vitally important in determining the underlying cause for the lameness. The lameness can be due to a multitude of diseases and underlying disorders, so your ability to tell the veterinarian what you have observed is crucial to determining the cause.

History Taking a thorough history is the first crucial step in finding out why your companion may be limping. I teach my veterinary nurses to ask 3 basic questions at the initial intake. First, how long has your pet been lame? Did it come on suddenly or was it a slow progressive onset? Has the pain been a waxing and waning event? Or is this a puppy that has always been lame and had an abnormal gait? This is crucial, as certain disease processes are sudden (like an ACL tear or a shoulder injury) and some are progressive (like hip or elbow dysplasia, or bone cancer). Secondly, WHEN is the lameness at its worst? Is he/she more lame first thing in the morning or after hard exercise? This is important because chronic disease, like osteoarthritis, is typically more painful after rest (when joints become stiff and sore) while joint instabilities, like ACL tears, are more painful after too much activity. Finally, it’s useful to know what therapies have been tried (NSAIDs or rest) and if any were of benefit.

In many cases, anti-inflammatory medication and rest will improve the lameness dramatically only to return again when the pet resumes normal activity.

Diagnostics A complete orthopedic physical exam is the next step. The exam usually begins with observation of the lameness. Determining if the lameness is due to pain vs. weakness vs. malalignment, takes years of training to notice the often subtle clues in the patient’s gait abnormality. Palpation of the normal limbs followed by examination of the affected limbs will pinpoint any atrophy, any joint effusion (fluid), any instability to the joints, and finally, the source of the pain. Given these findings, the next step is to take x-rays to see any changes in the bones or joint surfaces. Some joint instabilities (like ACL tears) are not visible on the x-ray, but you can often see the secondary signs of joint inflammation, such as fluid and arthritis that confirm a diagnosis based on the physical exam. Once the underlying cause is determined, your veterinary orthopedic specialist can discuss treatment options, which can range anywhere from conservative medical management to reconstructive surgeries. It is important to remember that lameness is an abnormality. It is a signal that there is a painful disease process that is compromising your pet’s quality of life. Seeking out veterinary advice and treatment is crucial to get your companion back on the road to recovery as soon as possible. It’s also a smart idea to ask someone - a friend or family member - to call the emergency hospital, so the staff expects you and your pet. It’s also a smart idea to keep the name, number and address of your emergency hospital in your cell phone as well as in a visible or easy to access place in the home. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of the following signs lasting more than one to two days:

nfortunately, accidents can happen at any time which is why it’s best that you know what to do before you find yourself in that stressful situation. Whether your pet experiences severe trauma – caused by an accident or fall – or experiences choking, heatstroke, an insect sting, household poisoning or other lifethreatening situation, you will need to move quickly to save the life of your pet. Signs indicating emergency care include: • Pale gums • Rapid breathing • Weak or rapid pulse • Change in body temperature • Difficulty standing • Apparent paralysis • Loss of consciousness • Seizures • Excessive bleeding

• Poor Appetite • Lethargy • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Lameness • Weakness • Excessive salivation • Excessive thirst (increased water intake) • Frequent and/or inappropriate urination • Constipation • Excessive scratching or dull, dry, or flaky hair coat • Wheezing or frequent panting • Nasal discharge or congestion • Displays of mild to moderate pain (such as crying when a specific area is touched or action is taken)

In general, you should contact your veterinarian if you notice any signs that you deem abnormal for your pet. It is better to be cautious than to wait. “We don’t need no stinking badges.”

“In November 2010, Barbie my miniature Doxie, underwent surgery for a ruptured disc. I was told to expect incontinency that would pass. However, 15 months later, she was still incontinent & had lost significant use of her hind legs making it impossible to keep a diaper on her. I tried every dog diaper with no luck. Then I found Do-Rite Disposable Dog Diapers®. They not only stayed on, they provided support for Barbie’s hind legs helping her to once again walk, run and play. DOG DIAPERS

March 2008 - June 2012

I

t was with a broken heart and much sadness that we shared the news of Frankie’s passing this summer at the age of six. Our much loved mascot, CEO (Canine Executive Officer) and sometimes cover model, was taken entirely too soon – the result of a sudden and unexpected condition.

We will miss everything about him but mostly how he loved everything with sheer abandon: a simple walk around the neighborhood, a run on the beach or his squeaky toys – which he would bring you if you were gone for a few hours or just to get the mail.

He rescued us just four short years ago when he landed in a shelter in Philly after spending his first two years somewhere in upstate Pennsylvania… and as the saying goes, it was love at first sight.

He never missed a Pet Pages event or Pooch Parade and had quite a fan club that would show up just to meet him… he loved the life of a “Rock Star”. We even joked that he worked so hard at the events that we feared he might consider going back to the shelter just so he could have weekends off again! He stuffed more personality in his stout, bow-legged little frame than dogs four times his size. He was the funniest little dog and the most amazing little friend who taught us more in four years than we could ever be lucky enough to teach him. We miss you so much… rest in peace sweet little Frankie.

“What we have enjoyed, we can never loose... all that we loved deeply becomes a part of us”.

A Dog Named Beau J

immy Stewart wrote a moving poem about his “willful but beloved” dog Beau, which he recited on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” in 1981. While he was shooting a movie he got a phone call from his vet telling him Beau was terminally ill and asking for permission to euthanize the dog. He told the vet to keep him alive and he’ll be there. Stewart later remembered, “After [Beau] died there were a lot of nights when I was certain that I could feel him get into bed beside me and I would reach out and pat his head. The feeling was so real that I wrote a poem about it and how much it hurt to realize that he wasn’t going to be there any more.”

BEAU

By Jimmy Stewart

He never came to me when I would call Unless I had a tennis ball, Or he felt like it, But mostly he didn’t come at all. When he was young He never learned to heel Or sit or stay, He did things his way. Discipline was not his bag But when you were with him things sure didn’t drag. He’d dig up a rosebush just to spite me, And when I’d grab him, he’d turn and bite me. He bit lots of folks from day to day, The delivery boy was his favorite prey. The gas man wouldn’t read our meter, He said we owned a real man-eater. He set the house on fire But the story’s long to tell. Suffice it to say that he survived And the house survived as well. On the evening walks, and Gloria took him, He was always first out the door. The Old One and I brought up the rear Because our bones were sore. He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on, What a beautiful pair they were! And if it was still light and the tourists were out, They created a bit of a stir. But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks And with a frown on his face look around. It was just to make sure that the Old One was there And would follow him where he was bound. We are early-to-bedders at our house I guess I’m the first to retire.

And as I’d leave the room he’d look at me And get up from his place by the fire. He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs, And I’d give him one for a while. He would push it under the bed with his nose And I’d fish it out with a smile. And before very long He’d tire of the ball And be asleep in his corner In no time at all. And there were nights when I’d feel him Climb upon our bed And lie between us, And I’d pat his head. And there were nights when I’d feel this stare And I’d wake up and he’d be sitting there And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair. And sometimes I’d feel him sigh and I think I know the reason why. He would wake up at night And he would have this fear Of the dark, of life, of lots of things, And he’d be glad to have me near. And now he’s dead. And there are nights when I think I feel him Climb upon our bed and lie between us, And I pat his head. And there are nights when I think I feel that stare And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair, But he’s not there. Oh, how I wish that wasn’t so, I’ll always love a dog named Beau.

any are unfamiliar with animal massage, and that’s okay! Our four-legged friends benefit from muscle integrated therapy just as humans do. Since it is non-invasive and received well by animals, it is being used more and more to improve and maintain their health.

The advantages of massage are both psychological and physical. Applying various deep-tissue strokes releases muscle spasms so the animal can relax. There is also the release of endorphins which further encourages relaxation and pain reduction. Animals that demonstrate fear and/or trust issues often gain more confidence and welcome touch more readily over time. Sometimes a change in behavior may be caused simply from pain and we don’t know it. How do we act when we are in pain? Physically, massage stimulates circulation, reduces inflammation, and works to restore motion. This can be especially important to animals recovering from an injury or those suffering from joint diseases such as arthritis, hip dysplasia or Lyme’s Disease. Laser Surgery

Y

our cat’s health and well-being are very important to us. With this in mind, we are pleased to offer laser surgery as a better alternative to the traditional scalpel for all surgical procedures. A laser is an intense beam that can be used to cut and seal tissue. At Cats Only Veterinary Hospital, we use a CO2 laser that emits an infrared light. The main component of cells,

less post-operative bandaging.

water, readily absorbs this light. This absorption allows a surgeon to cut, vaporize and cauterize tissue with remarkable results.

result, tissue tearing and bruising is minimized as well as post-operative swelling.

Compared with the traditional scalpel, laser surgery has benefits for both the patient and surgeon and these benefits are recognized in both human and veterinary medicine. So why do we prefer laser surgery?  Reduced pain – As the laser cuts, it seals nerve endings. As a result, there is less pain during the procedure and post-operatively.   Our hospital is very aggressive with pain management.  In addition to pain medications, laser surgery is another tool we use to achieve adequate pain control in our patients.  Less bleeding – In addition to sealing nerve endings, the laser seals (or cauterizes) small blood vessels as it cuts.  As a result, there is less bleeding during the procedure, better visualization during surgery for the surgeon, and

Precision – The laser beam allows our doctors to make very precise and accurate incisions.  Reduced post-operative swelling – The laser enables the surgeon to minimize the handling of delicate tissues as there is no physical contact between the laser and surgical area.  As a

Faster recovery – In addition to less pain and bleeding, there is also less swelling.  As a result, our patients have faster recoveries with fewer side effects.  This in turn translates into a shorter hospital stay so our patients can be at home with their families faster. What type of procedures is the laser used for? We utilize the benefits of laser surgery for all of our routine surgeries such as declaws, neuters and spays. Laser surgery is also used at our hospital for advanced surgeries such as mass removals, ear hematoma repair, abdominal exploratories, cystotomies (bladder surgeries), dental procedures, and nose repairs. What is Animal Law?

“A

nimal Law” is an evolving and expanding field of law that comes into our lives much more often than one would think! There are very few practicing attorneys in our area that focus their work on animal related issues. The spectrum of what can be called “animal law” ranges from the animals we eat – to animals in zoos – to the animals we keep in our homes as companions. There are many different scenarios where you may want to consult with an attorney who specializes in animal law: • Are you arguing with a former partner, spouse, or someone else about who should keep your pet? • Are you the victim of a dog bite? • Is your dog being wrongfully accused of biting someone else? • Do you have a dispute with your landlord over pet ownership or type of pets in your home? • Would you like to prepare a will or trust with your pet in mind? • Are you a rescue organization or veterinarian who would like to form a business or LLC?

“R

escue animals aren’t broken, they’ve simply experienced more life than other animals. If they were human, we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write, the ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Don’t pity them. Do something. Help to rescue. Donate. Volunteer. Foster. Adopt. And be proud to have their greatness by your side.” –

Pedigree Foundation

If you are faced with an animal related issue, you should consult with an attorney who recognizes the importance of your animals as a part of your family and is aware of the laws facing animals and their families today in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Sandra is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and she currently teaches “Animals and the Law” at Rutgers University. She was recently appointed to the Board of Philadelphia Animal Care and Control, and serves as an active volunteer and legal mentor to a well known animal advocacy group. Provided by: Sandra K. PACT People/Animals = Companions Together

PACT (People/Animals = Companions Together) is a Pennsylvania 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that develops, implements and administers programs that directly benefit both companion animals and their owners. PACT provides an alternative to unwanted surrender of animals to shelters for Military and Hospitalized families.

th The hills are alive wi ic us The Hound of M

We work directly with Military Service Members to match their companion animals with appropriate foster homes that will give them the care and love they need while their military owners are deployed. PACT does this by recruiting and qualifying volunteer fosters who are willing to open their homes to provide a loving and safe environment for these pets until they can be reunited upon their owners’ return.

’t let Sorry Steve, the new place won us have HUMANS.

PACT also services Hospital Patients by providing loving foster homes for their companion animals during their hardships. Families no longer have to worry about providing adequate time, attention, and care for their pets while a loved one is hospitalized. Instead of handing a loved companion over to an animal shelter as a last resort, families can now place their dogs and cats into an approved foster home provided by PACT. Help us make a difference by financially supporting our various foster programs or becoming a foster parent to a companion animal of those in need. You can help us help them. Get involved and change the lives of companion animals with your love and support until they can be reunited with their owners.

Just a few of the many benefits of

ADOPTING A SENIOR PET!

 They usually have a calmer temperament… think of it as a canine retiree! Easy walks, plenty of naps and lounging around make senior pets the mellow choice. Seniors can also inspire you to slow down and ‘stop to smell the roses’. Petting an animal has many medical benefits for humans such as lowering your heart rate… and making you smile!

The puppy phase is over! Senior pets are done with teething, nipping and destroying the furniture. Also, older dogs are likely to already be housetrained—and even if they’re not, they have the physical and mental abilities to pick it up really fast (unlike puppies).  Yes, you can teach an older dog a new trick! Older dogs can actually be easier to train because they are great at focusing on you—and on the task at hand. Plus, all those years of experience reading humans can help them quickly figure out how to do what you’re asking.

Mr. Pickles would ra th hours than stop to er drive another two ask for directions .

Answering the door is th ordering the pizza e easy part was tough.

 What you see is what you get: you’ll know important things like their full-grown size, personality and grooming requirements… if you’re not so into surprises, an older dog is for you!  At shelters, older dogs are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. Adopting an older pet so that he or she can live out their golden years in a stable, secure and loving environment is the ultimate act of love… go ahead – be a hero!

If it fits... it ships!

A WRINKLE IN TIME...read on. The Indian Solid Gold (Curcumin) and the Solid Gold SunDancer Dog Food The best dog food that you can buy for your dog is the Solid Gold SunDancer. It has no grains and no gluten. To control gas production, and maybe bloat in dogs, SunDancer uses tapioca and quinoa, called the Food of the Future. The meat is chicken and fish, all the Oriental dogs, the Arctic dogs, and dogs from England, Scotland, Ireland and water dogs, such as labs and poodles, were fed a fishbased diet and sea vegetation, such as in our Sea Meal, which is always fed with our dog food. Retrievers, terriers and spaniels, were originally from England are included. Sea Meal is effective against allergies and scratching. Curcumin is the root of the turmeric plant, and is in our SunDancer dog food, Curcumin has a 4,000 year old history in India for helping a wide variety of health problems. Dr. Oz on TV frequently talks about curcumin. Edgar Cayce, the sleeping prophet, said the two greatest gifts from God to Man are curcumin and olive oil. The Jan. 2003 issue of Cancer Research declared that curcumin has the ability to “suppress proliferation of cancer cells.” The October 2010 issue of “Nutrition and Cancer” indicated that curcumin makes chemo more effective. Recently, a breeder of Dalmatians talked with our sales person about using our SunDancer dog food. He had been feeding a cheap, low quality dog food. He decided to continue to feed the inferior food and buy curcumin/turmeric in a health food store and add it to the dog’s food. BIG MISTAKE! About a month later he called our store. He asked, “Have you ever seen a yellow Dalmatian?” He had one. He had overdosed on the curcumin. First of all, curcumin has to be cooked at a low temperature and must be mixed with oils to release the active properties. He rushed the dog to the vets. He never told the vet what he had done. So after extensive and expensive test, on the liver and kidneys, costing over $350, he called us. We put the dog on our non-curcumin Holistique Blendz dry dog food. Holistic does not mean natural or organic. It means that the whole body works together-mind, body and spirit. See the previous information on problems with white, near white or light colored dogs. White dogs absorb more ultra violet light (photo-aging) which may depress the immune system. Holistique Blendz is only 18% protein from fish, to spare stress on the organs. It is particularly effective on dogs with tear stains. Most of the tear stains are on white or light color dogs. So dropping the protein to 18% helps. Sissy has an 18 year old Dane mix. She was all gray on the muzzle. After six months on the SunDancer, the black came back.

Now for our cute story – “A Wrinkle in Time”

It was during WWII, Sissy, the owner of Solid Gold, lived in N.J. Her father worked for the army getting hard to find products. One summer, he was transferred to New Mexico. Sissy and her mother went there for the summer to be with him. In the cool of the evenings, the kids would go to a local stable to play with the horses. The kids loved to groom the horses. Sissy’s favorite was Fury, owned by Mr. O. Mr. O. told Sissy that if she would give Fury a daily brushing, he would teach her how to ride. So the entire summer was a delightful experience. Eventually, the summer came to an end, and Sissy returned back home. It was several years later, after the war was over, that Sissy was reading the paper. She saw a familiar photograph. She asked her mother why Mr. O’s picture was in the paper. Her mother smiled, it was a picture of Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, the Father of the Atomic Bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Just a Wrinkle in Time
