The history of the Omega Speedmaster is closely intertwined with some of the greatest spacefaring achievements of mankind. It was the not only the first watch to be flight-qualified by NASA, but also the first timepiece to be worn on the surface of the moon, when Buzz Aldrin took his historic steps on the lunar surface. The present Speedmaster is a rare reference made in 1969 — the year of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission. Lavishly encased in 18K yellow gold to commemorate the significant accomplishment, it was one of the earliest special edition Speedmasters, with only 1,014 of the pieces created. While number one and number two were presented to the President and Vice President of the United States, numbers 3 to 32 were given to astronauts and various personalities. The remaining examples were publicly sold. The present watch is one among this historical line of commemorative timepieces. Those sold publicly bore the inscription "The First Watch Worn on the Moon" along with the limited edition number. Preserved in excellent condition with its original bracelet, the watch is accompanied with an Extract confirming its date of production, delivery, and that it was a special numbered edition to celebrate the "Apollo XI" moon landing.
