Reference 6263 was introduced in the early 1970’s and remained in production until 1988. Throughout its production, both bezel and pushers feature an evolution. The present example can be considered transitional, as it correctly features a Mark II bezel but Mark III pushers, introduced in the early 1980’s. The Big Red dial variation was introduced in the second half of the 1970’s, featuring a larger Daytona signature than the previous iteration and in red. In order to distinguish period dials from later Rolex service dials, one has to look closely at the fonts: in period dials, they present strong serifs, while in service example they present a more square, serif-less design. The present dial is a representative of the latest iteration of Big Red, distinguished by the Daytona signature well-distanced from the counter at 6 o’clock, and the “Rolex/Oyster/ Cosmograph” designation placed so that the lower side of “Cosmograph” is nearly perfectly aligned with the top of the counters at 3 and 9.
