2012-2013 NEW FACULTY Kassie Archambault ’06 Teaching Fellow in Russian

What is your favorite word in Russian? Why? My favorite word in Russian is “bukinistitciski,” which I hardly get to use because it’s meaning has to do with selling second-hand books, but it’s a fun word to say! What drew you to Andover? I graduated from Andover in 2006, and it has shaped the way I think about education. For the past two years, I have been teaching in New York City public schools, and I have often reflected on my time at Andover and how my teachers motivated and challenged me. I was drawn to return to Andover in a teaching capacity in order to grow in my own pedagogy and learn from people that I greatly admire and respect. What else will you be doing on campus this year (coaching, house counseling, etc.)? I am a house counselor in Bancroft. In the winter, I will be an assistant coach for the wrestling team, and in the spring I will assist with coaching the Girls JVII Lacrosse team. Where did you graduate from college and what was your major? In 2010 I graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in Russian language and literature. In 2012 I graduated from Hunter College of the City University of New York with a master’s degree in Special Education.

Brienne Foley

Margaret Cooper Teaching Fellow in English

How did you decide to come to Andover? I came here to teach at summer session two years ago and had a really good experience, so I decided to apply to come back. What are you most looking forward to as the school year starts? I’m looking forward a lot to teaching, but I think what I’m most looking forward to is getting to interact with my students in lots of different venues outside the classroom since I can see their performances and sports games since there are always so many activities going on here, so I’m excited about that. How did you decide to become an English teacher? I became an English major in college because I love reading novels. From there, I just decided that I wanted to continue reading novels and then sharing works of writing with people. I’m also very into writing, so I think it’s really important that students become better writers, so that’s also part of my agenda as an English teacher. What are your other campus roles? I am a complementary house counselor in Double Brick, and I am going to be helping with the Writing Center. Where did you graduate from college and what was your major? I graduated from Yale University with a major in English.

Jessica Harms

What drew you to teaching History? To Andover? I knew I wanted to be a history teacher since I was in elementary school! I was drawn to Andover for its reputation of acceptance, diversity and constant drive for improvement. What else will you be doing on campus this year (coaching, house counseling, etc.)? I will be a complementary house counselor in Samaritan House, a Winter Track coach and a Spring Dance coach. What did you do over the summer? I had baby number two and moved back to Massachusetts...and of course chased after my oneyear-old. A little-known/interesting fact about yourself! I just moved back from Ireland two years ago. I loved it there!

What is your favorite play/dance to teach? I love musicals, and I will also be directing our spring musical! Last school year I directed and choreographed five musicals in 10 months! Did you know that in the 1970s “The Hobbit” was made into a musical? And yes, Gandalf sings. What did you do over the summer? This summer I had my first experience with boarding school, teaching dance and theatre at Cushing Academy. What drew you to Andover? Andover has a strong, supportive community with students who are willing to try new things and work hard to achieve their goals. The school’s commitment to diversity and educating youth from every quarter is something that resonates strongly with me, having worked with the diverse community of Boston Public Schools for the past two years. What else will you be doing on campus this year? I will be overseeing the Drama Lab productions, which are completely student-run and performed on Friday evenings. Sandra LopezMorales ’97

Fellow in Graham House & Instructor in Psychology Why Andover? I was a student here and graduated in 1997, and I think when you attend a school like Andover, you have a profound connection to the school that never really goes away, and I think I’ve consistently felt a pull back. Andover is a very special place to me, and I can’t even tell you how happy I am to be back here. Why counseling? I’ve always been sort of an observer of people ever since I was very young, but I took two psychology classes at Andover and I think that really solidified things for me. What are you looking forward to? The kids. Working with the students, helping you guys solve problems, helping you figure out who you are, helping you manage stress. I know first hand how difficult this place can be at times, and learning new ways to cope and problem solve are incredibly important to successfully graduating from Andover. What are your other campus roles? I’m a complementary house counselor in Bancroft, and I’ll be teaching a PACE class. I also volunteer with community service. Where did you graduate from college and what was your major? University of Texas at Austin, Psychology major (bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate at UTexas)

Joan Rasmussen Teaching Fellow in Math

What is your favorite topic to teach? Graph theory is my favorite because it has very broad applications. It places a hierarchy or order on real world things that happen. It’s looking at connections between any kinds of systems. You could look at a human body, you could look at a school system or you could look at a map. It helps to organize; it’s a big problem-solving tool in my opinion. What did you do this summer? I taught at ACE in Colorado, and I also just traveled. I visited Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee. What drew you to Andover? I think the high standards that are held in academics are probably the biggest things. Where did you graduate from college and what was your major? I have both an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree from Louisiana Tech University. I have a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s in science and math. My undergrad degree was in French and my Masters degree was in math.

Austin Davis

Teaching Fellow in History What drew you to teaching English? To Andover? I’ve known I was going to be a teacher since I was five-years-old, and I would play school with my younger sisters—I always played the English teacher, of course. And Andover is exactly the kind of place I’ve always dreamed of teaching at, the kind of place where I can interact with students in the classroom, in the dorm, as a coach and as a fellow community member. I’m so excited for all the aspects of this incredible place. What else will you be doing on campus? I’m a house counselor in Bartlet this year. As for sports, I’m helping out with Outdoor Pursuits in the winter, and I’m coaching Girls’ Water Polo in the spring! What did you do over the summer? My favorite English word: bodacious. It’s just perfect. Where did you graduate from college and what was your major? I graduated from Williams College, and I majored in English... and math! I may be an English teacher, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for proofs and equations. Maybe I’ll give a guest math lecture sometime?

Kiley Horne

Teaching Fellow in Biology How did you become interested in Biology? When did you decide you wanted to teach? I fell in love with Biology in high school because I found the study of life to be most interesting and also fun. I enjoyed doing science as much as learning it. I only decided to teach very recently, during my Senior year of college. What drew you to Andover? As a former private school student, I knew that if I wanted to teach it would be at a private school so that I could feel the sense of community that comes with the environment. Andover was on the top of my list being one of the top private schools in the country and also being right down the street from my college. What are you most looking forward to as the school year begins and why? Meeting my students and finding my groove as a teacher. I hope to be one that can help others enjoy biology the way I did in high school. I hope to make it fun for my students to learn and do science. What’s a fun fact about yourself? I love to surf, I have a puppy named Henry and I love to eat fried pickles. What are your other roles on campus? I am a house counselor in Johnson Hall and I’m also an assistant coach for Girls Varsity Soccer and Girls Varsity Basketball. Where did you graduate from college and what was your major? Merrimack College, major in Biology with a concentration in Ecology and Environment.

Christoph Niederhauser

Teaching Fellow in German What is your favorite word in German? Perhaps “Libelle”? It’s the word for “dragonfly” (though it has neither the “dragon” or the “fly” linguistically). The “l”s in it make it sound very graceful. What did you do over the summer? Over the summer I worked at Middlebury College’s intensive German Summer School program, where no one was able to speak in anything but German for seven weeks! What drew you to Andover? There are many facets to Andover that drew me here, but an important one was the strong sense of a supportive and curious community. What else will you be doing on campus this year? I’m a complementary house counselor at Flagg House, I will be coaching cross country this term and helping out with basketball in the winter term. I hope to be involved with the German Club and CAMD!
