There are a lot of people that forget about looking for a dentist because they do not put visiting their dentist on their to-do list until they have a problem with their teeth.

Feeling Mouth Pain When you start to feel pain in your mouth, you may already have a cavity growing in your teeth. Part of the process of avoiding cavities is visiting your doctor on a consistent basis so you can be sure that you are getting the preventative care that your teeth need to stay strong. Understanding what a cavity is may help you ensure that you do not have to deal with them in your mouth. A cavity is caused by tooth decay and the tooth decay can affect the enamel and the dentin on your tooth.

How Cavities Form The enamel is the outer coating of your tooth that protects your tooth from decay. The dentin is the inner layer of the tooth and the enamel is designed to protect the dentin from any type of decay. When your enamel is affected, your dentin is exposed to decay that can be very detrimental for your tooth. The decay that occurs is often a result of carbohydrates coming in contact with the tooth and then turning into acid after being left on the tooth. After we eat sugars or starches, the bacteria in our mouth will digest the food and turn them into that dangerous acid. The sugars and starches that are harmful to our teeth are a part of breads, milk, fruit, cakes, candy, cereals and soda. When bacteria, acid, food particles and saliva combine and then are left on your teeth, plaque will begin to form. This plaque will attach itself to your teeth and the plaque will begin to dissolve the layer of enamel that is meant to protect your teeth.

As the plaque dissolves the enamel on the tooth, holes are created. These holes are referred to as cavities. The cavities are a problem simply because they expose the dentin of the tooth and the dentin can be very sensitive. Cavities affect children and adults alike. It is important that children and adults establish proper dental hygiene habits to ward off the plaque that sits on teeth and dissolves the enamel. Brushing and flossing on consistent basis is a great way to ensure that teeth are well taken care of. If brushing and flossing is not working to ward off cavities, it may be beneficial to talk with your Santa Cruz dentist. A dentist can provide the extra insight that you need. Following the dentists advice is a great way to ensure that your teeth are as healthy as possible.
