PHILIPPE PASTOR

PHILIPPE PASTOR CONQUERING NEW TERRITORIES Influenced by the company of César, Antoni Clavé, Paul Rebeyrolle, among others, Philippe Pastor creates a personalized vision of Nature by working directly in Nature and with Nature, translating Man’s interaction with Nature. Always interested in art and in the environment, Pastor developed his technique during the time spent at his atelier and home in la Garde-Freinet, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Using living matter and its transformation through time and immediate surroundings, combining soil, pigments, minerals and plants of all kinds, Philippe Pastor represents though his works, his vision of life, environmental destruction and Man’s involvement in society.

In 2003, enraged by the forest fires of Massif des Maures, France, he began the Burned Trees sculpture series, using the region’s scorched tree trunks. These sculptures have become a symbol of deforestation and can be found exhibited throughout the world, from New York to Singapore, including United Nations Headquarters in Nairobi, where Pastor extends his commitment to nature through his support and participation in the project “plant for the planet: the Billion Tree Campaign”, launched in 2007 by the United Nations Environmental Program, UNEP.

In his Hearts series, the message Philippe Pastor delivers is “to destroy Nature is to destroy Man”. Through this Series he is reporting a crime made against nature and expressing his anger in the form of a burning heart. The passion he expresses in this series pleads us to raise our awareness of Man’s blindness and lack of emotion towards the problems concerning his surroundings.

The Four Seasons series centers on the idea of climate change and the earth’s seasonal cycle. Under the open sky, where they remain for months, the works evolve with nature, through weather and natural erosion conditions, allowing them to unceasingly transform, much like the natural day-to-day course of our environment. This creative process reflects his union and constant commitment with Nature.

The Artist’s participation in the 52nd and 53rd Venice Bienniale, mark turning points in his work. In the 53rd Bienniale, he inaugurated the pavilion for the principality of monaco where he exhibited The Sky is Watching the Earth series. The use of multiple pigments, mixed with water and oxy-hydrogen flames, create a vivid image of scenes that resemble satellite photographs of the earth and how it is being destroyed.

The burning need to preserve and respect the world’s natural resources gives birth to the H2O series. These works mimic the flow of water, the main resource for life, and its fluidity. Created on canvases laid across the Earths surface, using light and vivid colors, these works remind us of the often understated and ordinary beauty of our surroundings and express Philippe Pastor’s own unique bond with the world.

The Revolution series encompasses most of the techniques used in his past series, giving life to a unique “sculptured painting”. Using old military hospital tents, the artist works with natural pigments while molding the material into drape figures that differ from the usual “frame canvas”. He then attaches them on a plank of wood, representing a visual movement of passion, strength and beauty. Driven by a creative research into the interrelationship of humankind and nature, the Blue Monochrome series marks both a significant turning point in the evolution of Philippe Pastor’s painting while it resonates with his previous series. His work reflects upon matter, format and relief, but also upon art that links us to the Earth, the environment. Blue Monochrome, with its rich and powerful materials is part of the desire to restore meaning to what was thought lost.

As a result of his work on matter, the artist produces a new series Avec le Temps (Over Time). Inspired by Les Quatre Saisons series, executed outdoors, these paintings explore the concept of time and nature transformation. Material and pigments are mixed together to create a new topography, crossed by organic flow that reminds us of the chaos of Nature and the disruption of seasons. Through pictorial matter, Philippe Pastor illustrates a current concern and a global issue: that of climate change.

In direct line with this work Les Oiseaux de Malheur (The Misfortune Birds) series focuses on a specific topic regarding environment preservation: birds, the victims of pollution. Caught in plastic or asphyxiated by oil tides, these animals are prey to the effects of human negligence. The artist summons up these ghosts in abstract blackstained landscapes, evoking oil, with outspread wings or wounded beaks that crash on the canvas.

In parallel with these lyrical landscapes, Philippe Pastor has continued his monochrome experiments. During the winter season, the cracked canvases come in various shades of white, referring to the melting polar ice. Under the evocative title North Pole, the series calls up the polar topography of endangered areas due to global warming. The arrival of spring is the opportunity to explore another palette, the pink one. Under a lighthearted title, Rose Bonbon (Candy-Pink), Philippe Pastor transforms the surface of the canvas into earthly matter. Burnt soil with subtle cracks, the paintings evoke a view from the sky, animated by natural pigments of remarkable intensity.
