After living 26 years on the coastal plain of Georgia, I now live in a hilly city surrounded by mountains. No matter how awful my day has been, if I remember to look up at the mountains, I feel myself lifted and comforted. They are like a lumpy old favorite sweater wrapped loosely around my shoulders. In my neighborhood, it’s not uncommon to encounter a black bear crossing a street or rummaging through a trash can. The experience is both frightening and thrilling. And it keeps me attentive to my surroundings instead of mucking around inside my head. I collect definitions of poetry. I have pages of them. The more I find, the less I understand what poetry is. My favorite definition is Auden’s: “The clear expression of mixed feelings.” Interview Copyright © 2016 by Philip Deal philipdealbooks.com
