RANSOM ART, PIMLICO ROAD,

TERRY O’NEILL

For the first time ever, Ransom Art will exhibit unseen and rare vintage photographs from Terry O’Neill’s archive of iconic and legendary figures from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

is one of the world’s most collected photographers whose work hangs in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. For over six decades, he has photographed the frontline of fame, from the greats of screen and stage to presidents, prime minister and rock stars.

In the year of the 60th anniversary of the creation of James Bond by Ian Fleming, this retrospective features coveted backstage photographs of the world’s best known special agent. Bond and Beyond also includes portraits of giants of the film, music and sports worlds such as Frank Sinatra, Steve Sean Connery as James Bond-on the set of Diamonds Are Forever, Las Vegas, 1971 McQueen, The Beatles, Muhammed Ali, Brigitte Bardot, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Credit: Terry O'Neill

No other living photographer has embraced the span of fame, capturing the icons of our age from Winston Churchill to Nelson Mandela, from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Amy Winehouse, from Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to Nicole Kidman, as well as every James Bond from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan.

Credit: Terry O'Neill

He photographed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in 1963, pioneered backstage reportage photography with David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton and Chuck Berry.

Founded by Mark Ransom in 1990, Ransom Art is one of the London’s leading dealers in contemporary art and photography offering rare and unique photographs and works of art from established names such as Francis Bacon, Salvador Dali, Lucian Dustin Hoffman at home, New York, 1969 Freud, Andy Warhol, Terry O’Neill to the more recently acclaimed Tim Woolcock and Masaki Yada.

Credit: Terry O'Neill

Terry’s arrival on the scene in 1963 inspired a revolution in intimate portrait photography. There was none of the old stuffy formality, indeed many of these icons became his mates. As he said about his way of working: “There was no posing, or studios or special lighting. It was fresh, new and up close…” The end result is this extraordinary retrospective of one of the 20th Century’s most collected photographers.

Credit: Terry O'Neill

Terry’s photographs from the 60s and 70s are among his most prized, yet for some of them the negatives are missing, and this makes this exhibition a very rare opportunity to view these original and unique works of art.

THOUSANDS OF OLDER PEOPLE CELEBRATE SILVER SUNDAY IN CENTRAL LONDON

PIMLICO PRIMARY LOSES ITS HEAD AFTER JUST FOUR WEEKS

The head of a new free school, Annaliese Briggs, 27, has stepped down just four weeks after it opened to 'pursue other opportunities in primary education.’

Two and a half thousand older people aged over 65 celebrated Silver Sunday on 6th October – getting involved in free events from iPad training and fitness classes to ballroom dancing and chocolate making.

In April 2013 it was revealed that principal Briggs was head hunted from educational think tank Civitas. When she was appointed she had not completed a postgraduate certificate in education. Ms Briggs has had to defend herself against criticism that she was inexperienced.

Organised by Westminster Council, Silver Sunday aims to help

Pimlico Primary is sponsored by Future Academies, a charity set up by Lord Nash who this year was appointed a junior education minister working under Education Secretary Michael Gove.

Mothers of Pimlico Primary children were surprised having been told Ms Briggs was ill and would be returning. Sources told the Guardian that Ms Briggs was “not happy because she could not cope with the job, full stop. It was too much to learn, too quickly.”

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, leader of Westminster Labour Group, said: “The chaos at Pimlico, Churchill Gardens and Millbank Primary Academies, all run by the Future Group which is led by a Conservative education minister, needs to be sorted out without delay.

combat the loneliness felt by older people by offering free events and activities to help them get out of the house and meet new people.

“Michael Gove is clearly conflicted and cannot conduct an inquiry into his own junior minister’s affairs. The prime minister needs to act swiftly so that parents and pupils at these three schools can be confident that all three schools are being managed in a competent and effective manner.”

What started in Westminster last year with around 20 events has now become a national phenomenon with 23 areas in the UK holding more than 150 events.

Cllr Christabel Flight, Westminster City Council’s Older People’s Champion said: “There are hundreds of free events on offer up and down the country where you can share skills and experiences, meet new people and get involved in your local community. From walking tours and afternoon tea to ballroom dancing classes – we’ve got something for everyone!”

Susan Rankin-Reid, headteacher of another sister school Churchill Gardens Primary Academy, will leave at Christmas. Kelly Teddy, the former acting deputy head at sister school Millbank Academy, has already been appointed to replace Ms Briggs.

Miss Briggs is completing a school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) course in Wandsworth and will qualify with a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE).

Being the head of an inner-London school is a tough job which can sometimes be very stressful.

THE LONDON CHORUS AT ST GABRIEL’S, PIMLICO.

THE CHELSEA & WESTMINSTER SWIMMING CLUB

is to perform an unusual selection of English choral works. The programme is entitled “Music for three Queens of England” with music from the time of Elizabeth I, Victoria, and our present Queen Elizabeth II. From the 16th century we have songs by William Byrd, Thomas Tallis and John Redford. To represent the Victorian era, we have the ever popular “I was Glad” and “Blest Pair of Sirens” by Hubert Parry as well as works by S.S. Wesley. Benjamin Britten

has about 450 youth swimmers, ages 3 to 18, primarily from Westminster, RBKC and Hammersmith.  You may have seen their swimmers with the silver hats at Queen Mother Sports Centre.

Queen Mother is one of the club’s main pools, though recently the Club has expanded to the Porchester, Jubilee and Seymour pools, making club youth swimming available in those locations for the first time. CWSC, as the Club is known, was named the Westminster Active Club of the Year in 2012 and is Swim21 accredited. The Club has been fortunate enough to experience unprecedented success the last couple of years, including this past summer at Nationals, where the Club qualified a record 16 swimmers and had its first National Champion.

CWSC takes swimmers with some swimming ability into its “hats” program. With swimmers starting as young as 3, the Club has older swimmers whose entire swimming career has been with Pedro, Ken, Kamran & Nicholas the Club. Swimming is a sport that welcomes children from all over the area, no matter what school they attend or where they were born. In order to do this, the Club needs continued support from its boroughs, region and national politicians. Its biggest challenge is not the enthusiasm of its swimmers or coaches, but finding pools where they can swim. Currently the Club has to turn away 19 out of every 20 interested swimmers. If you have tried out for the Club before, and have not yet been accepted, keep trying and let your local councillor and MP know that the Club needs more access to swimming pools in Central London. The club maintains a great website, which has a lot of additional information: www.cwswimming.com

represents the time of Elizabeth II along with the haunting and evocative “Song for Athene” by Tavener, sung as Princess Diana's funeral.

The London Chorus enjoys a busy schedule of concerts, appearing in all the major London venues from the Royal Albert Hall, to the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games. The Chorus will be led by musical director, Ronald Corp OBE, and with Edward Batting on the beautiful St Gabriel’s organ.

The concert at St Gabriel’s, Warwick Square, Pimlico is on Friday 8th November, at 7pm with ticket prices at £12 (£8 for children under 12) which will include an interval drink. To purchase tickets, please contact the TLC hotline on 020 8658 0829 or anne@londonchorus.org.uk, or buy on the door.

ST GEORGE'S SQUARE

At the northern end is Lupus Street, with Pimlico tube station close by via Belgrave Road to the east. At the southern end is Grosvenor Road running along the River Thames. Pimlico's development was started in 1835 by the Marquess of Westminster, and the building was supervised by Thomas Cubitt who also designed the gardens. St George's Square was originally laid out in 1839 as two parallel streets running north-south but by 1843 had been developed into a formal square, London's only residential square open to the River Thames. The first residents moved in in 1854. Until 1874 the square had its own pier for steamersThe Church of St Saviour stands at the north end of the square, and was designed by Thomas Cundy the Younger.

If you're not sure what 'private banking' means, you're not alone. In a recent YouGov survey for Duncan Lawrie Private Bank, 32% of those questioned said they would be unlikely to consider a private bank if changing to another provider because they don't know what a private bank is, and 34% couldn't name any (1). Matthew Parden, Managing Director of Belgravia-based Duncan Lawrie Private Bank said: “The private banking industry has done a great job in retaining an aura of mystique and exclusivity but this has been to the detriment of many of the UK population, who are desperate for a better service but don’t know where to look. “Due to misconceptions, people are overlooking what could be an obvious solution to many of the things that they find disagreeable about high street banks and building societies, in particular poor customer service.” Duncan Lawrie’s Relationship Managers recently scored 81% for client satisfaction (20% higher than their peer group) and they currently have capacity to take on a limited number of new clients. If you would like to find out more about Duncan Lawrie or private banking in general to see if it’s right for you, visit the website at www.duncanlawrie.com/banking-guide, where you can download the guide, ‘unwrap the secrets to personal banking’ or speak to John Hilson, New Client Relationship Manager on 0207 201 3010 or 07590 452440. ST GEORGE'S HOSPITAL

THE PIMLICO DISTRICT HEATING UNDERTAKING (PDHU)

Founded in 1733, In 1716 Henry Hoare, William Wogan, Robert Witham and Patrick Cockburn decided to open the Westminster Public Infirmary in Petty France, but was and relocated to larger premises in Chapel Street in 1724. By 1732 the Governors were forced to seek an even larger building. The minority of the Governors preferred Lanesborough House.

opened for the annual Open House London (21 - 22 September) and over 1,000 visitors. PDHU provides heating and hot water services to over 3,250 homes and businesses via the UK’s first low carbon energy network managed by CityWest Homes, an award winning property services provider based in London.

Lanesborough House, Hyde Park Corner, was originally built in 1719 by the James Lane, 2nd Viscount Lanesborough. The new St George's Hospital on three floors and accommodated 30 patients. By 1744, the hospital had fifteen wards and over 250 patients. By the 1800s, the hospital slipped into disrepair. The old Lanesborough House was demolished to make way for a new 350 bed new facility. Building started in 1827 designed by architect William Wilkins and the new hospital was completed by 1844. By 1859, a critical shortage of beds led to the addition of an attic floor. Soon insufficient led to the creation of a new convalescent hospital in Wimbledon.

The PDHU was built in the 1950s, the network was the first major initiative to combat London’s air pollution, ahead of the Clean Air Act of 1956. It originally used waste heat from Battersea Power Station to supply homes with heating without the use of coal fires, which was contributing to the London smog.

Visitors were able to view the impressive Caterpillar engines which power PDHU. Those feeling brave were also able to climb the 41 metre thermal store, a tower which Erin Alexander and son James Alexander (aged 2) by boiler stores 2,500,000 litres of water.

A medical school was established in 1834 at Kinnerton Street and was incorporated into the hospital in 1868. The Medical School, now St George's, University of London, was built in the south-west corner of the hospital site in Hyde Park, with the main entrance in Knightsbridge and the back entrance in Grosvenor Crescent Mews.

The CityWest Homes facility provides heating and hot water services to over 3,250 homes, schools and businesses in the area. The network releases significantly less carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere than a conventional power station by generating electricity Visitors line up to view the tower close to the users. This cuts transmission losses and can save up to 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year by displacing the coal fired electricity generation.

In 1948, plans for a new site for St George's at The Grove Fever and Fountain Hospitals at Tooting were agreed by the NHS.

In 1980, St George's Hospital at Hyde Park Corner closed its doors for the last time. (That building still stands and is now The Lanesborough Hotel on the west side of Hyde Park Corner.)

Working with Westminster City Council, CityWest Homes has plans to expand the network. This will provide more residents with the best possible value for money while helping to make Westminster an environmentally friendly zone. Pimlico & Belgravia Eye November 2013

TOURETTES ACTION GROUP ‘TOUR OF BRITAIN’ DROPS INTO WESTMINSTER

STREET PASTORS

was founded in Brixton in 2003 by Rev. Les Isaac. It was based on a model from Jamaica in which individual churches joined together to take their values out onto the streets. Street Pastors is an initiative of the Ascension Trust, a registered charity established in 1993. The initial activities focussed on confronting gang culture, the use of knives and guns nas well as anti-social behavior and drunkenness.

Four mothers of children and adults with Tourettes Syndrome are taking to the road to raise awareness of the condition in every city in England.

On the London leg of their Tourettes Awareness Challenge they were welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Sarah Richardson, in her rooms at the top of City Hall, where they also met Dr Peter Brambleby, Westminster City Council’s director of public health.

In February 2011 a sister organisation School Pastors was launched nationally to reduce bullying, anti-social behaviour and drug use, and to remove barriers to learning. They mentor people young people within a school setting, and patrol outside to break patterns of negative behaviour at the end of the school day.

The four women, who between them have six children or grandchildren with the condition, were visiting Westminster as part of their campaign for the charity Tourettes a_ction.

Individual street pastors are Christians, over the age of 18, committed to a local church for at least one year, who pass an enhanced CRB check and who have a positive reference from their church leader stating that they would be suitable to be a Street Pastor and are leading a Christian lifestyle. They must complete 12 training sessions spread over a year, covering subjects including conflict management, counselling and basic first-aid. Street Pastors is also supported by 'Prayer Pastors', who do not patrol but who provide support to street pastors by praying for them and sometimes keep in touch with them by mobile phone.

Their 2,200 mile tour, which launched in Newcastle on September 30th, will take in each of England’s 52 cities before arriving in Carlisle ten days later. To help them on their way, the women have been equipped with a car by Nissan, which is sponsoring the journey. During the meeting, they discussed how a_ction can be taken at a

Individual street pastors seek to listen to and talk with people in their local community, to provide information on local agencies, help and services, and to discourage anti-social behaviour. Practical help provided by street pastors include handing out space blankets outside nightclubs, and flip-flops to clubbers unable to walk home in their high-heeled footwear; giving out water, chocolate for energy, personal alarms, carrying bus timetables; and ensuring the safety of vulnerable persons. Street pastors remove bottles and other potential weapons from the streets, in order to discourage violence and vandalism. They may also have access to sleeping bags stored in church buildings as a last resort.

local level to enable people with Tourettes to thrive, and presented the Lord Mayor and Dr Brambleby with a document produced by Tourettes Action detailing some of the issues surrounding the condition.

Dr Peter Brambleby, Westminster City Council’s director of public health. said: “Tourettes Syndrome affects around 50,000 people in the country – over 2,000 of whom are in Westminster – and yet the condition is much misunderstood, while people living with it are often isolated and stigmatised.

Many police services have praised the scheme after initial doubts. Ascension Trust reports that reduction in crime figures have been recorded in areas where the Street Pastors initiatives have been operating, which have been confirmed by official police figures. Politicians who have expressed admiration or support for the scheme including David Cameron and Boris Johnson. The general public response to Street Pastors has been markedly positive, even among those who have been observed being abusive to the emergency services.

“We are committed to ensuring that more is done to ensure this ceases to be the case, and that everybody living with Tourettes in the borough has the support they need to live full and happy lives.

“The cross-country campaign embarked upon by these four women will go a long way towards achieving that aim, and it is one that we are delighted to support.”

PATRICK HERON

Patrick Heron's started writing about art in 1945 in The New English Weekly where he published article on Ben Nicholson, essays on Picasso, Klee, Cézanne and Braque. He became art critic of the New Statesman until 1950, and London correspondent to Arts Digest, New York.

was born on 30th January 1920 at Headingley, Yorkshire. He attended St. George's School in Harpenden. At 17 he attended The Slade School of Art for two days a week. In World War II he worked as an agricultural labourer, and then at the Leach Pottery at St Ives in 1944–45, where he met Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and other artists of the St Ives School.

In 1966, 1968 and 1970 he published articles in Studio International. He defended the independence and autonomy of the English Art Schools, resisting their integration into the polytechnic system. The article 'Murder of the art schools' in The Guardian in 1971 was reprinted in Patrick Heron on Art and Education.

Up to 1953 he visited Provence, Italy, and visited George Braque in Paris. His first one-man exhibition was at the Redfern Gallery in London in 1947. Following this he exhibited twelve paintings at the Il

In 1947 Heron began a series of portraits of T.S.Eliot. The final cubist version, painted in 1949, was acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in 1966. His daughters Katharine was born in 1947, and Susanna in 1949. Heron's writings were admired by American art critic Clement Greenberg. Their friendship disintegrated when they disagreed as judges of the John Moores Prize Exhibition in 1965. In April 1956 the family moved to west Cornwall.

In 1958, he moved to Ben Nicholson’s former studio at Porthmeor, St Ives, and two years later he held his first exhibitions in New York at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery and at the newly arrived Waddington Galleries in London. He visited Australia in 1967 and 1973, exhibiting at the Bonython Gallery, Sydney.

In 1979 Delia Heron died unexpectedly at Eagles Nest. For some years Patrick was unable to paint. In 1989 he returned to Sydney as artist in residence at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 1994 his Exhibition "Big Paintings" was held at Camden Arts Centre. Heron's largest and most ambitious paintings were 15–22 ft long. Patrick Heron made several Public Works, in 1992 he designed the coloured glass window for Tate St.Ives.

His Big Painting Sculpture in Cardinal Place, Victoria was commissioned by Land Securities in 1998, offering a creative and elegant solution to a practical problem of wind blowing through the passageway. Patrick’s son-in-law, the architect Julian Feary, was charged with realizing Heron’s concept in three dimensions and grand scale. The 19m-tall structure is supported by aluminium masts and is constructed from metal squiggles and 18 irregularly shaped, brightly coloured discs: yellow, violet, red and shades of blue from ultramarine to cobalt. The sculpture was unveiled in July 1998. Patrick Heron died peacefully at his home in Zennor, Cornwall, on 20th March 1999 at the age of 79.

Bienal di São Paulo, Brazil. He taught at Central School of Arts and Crafts in London until 1956. He was inspired by the American Abstract Expressionists at the Tate Gallery. A development towards abstraction had been evident in his paintings, for example, Square Leaves (1952) and Winter Harbour (1955) The effect on Heron of the New York painters, together with his move to live at Eagles Nest, overlooking the cliffs at Zennor, that year was a pivotal point in the transformation into his now characteristic language of interlinking forms; his balancing of colour and space. Heron's deepest influences were Braque, Matisse and Bonnard and he was connected first of all to the pure abstraction of European lineage, represented by Naum Gabo and Pierre Soulages.
