INTERNATIONAL RADIATION SPRING 2012

PROJECT: SMITHSONIAN MUSEOLOGY CENTER SETTING: WASHINGTON, DC AFFILIATION: DESIGN STUDIO 2 BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY MEDIUM: RHINO, SKETCHUP, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR, MODELING MATERIAL

INTERNATIONAL RADIATION

THE PROJECT REQUIRES THE DESIGN OF A MUSEOLOGY CENTER FOR THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE ON THE NATIONAL MALL IN WASHINGTON, DC. THE CONCEPT FOR THIS BUILDING RELATES BACK TO THE SMITHSONIAN IDEA OF BEING INTERNATIONAL. THE BUILDING SEEMS TO BE FORMED BY THE UNIQUE SHAPE OF THE SITE. IT RADIATES OUTWARD MAKING IT MORE DIVERSE. THE SECONDARY THEME WAS TO PRESERVE THE GREEN SPACE ON THE SITE. PARKS AND RECREATION SPACE SET WASHINGTON APART FROM OTHER CITIES. TO PROVIDE SOME HARMONY BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND GREEN SPACE, THE STRUCTURE FEATURES GREEN ROOFS THAT SEEM TO FLOW BACK INTO THE ORGANIC LANDSCAPE.

THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY SEPARATING THE MATERIALS AND ROTATING THE PLANES, ALLOWING THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING TO SHOW THROUGH.
