The Inhibitaur was a specific mascot character I was tasked with designing to embody Continental’s bold new rust-inhibiting product of the same name. He was based on a classical minotaur, and given hulking proportions to show the product’s tough stance against rust. He was featured on the product’s label and several promotional materials, including ads, flyers and a t-shirt.

The higher-ups at Continental often enjoyed my illustration talents, and asked me on several occasions to draw for various label designs, flyers, brochures, and ads. I crafted many of these by originally drawing and inking by hand, then bringing the scanned version into Photoshop for digital coloring. For some of the labels, art using stock illustrations already existed on the company’s older label designs, and I used those as reference when creating the newer versions.

For this, I was often tasked with creating small web banners to remind them of various new products, promotions, and sales opportunities. These originally displayed at 280 x 400 pixels and rotated on the front page of the web portal.

So what’s a sales person to do when a random holiday has cut their week down to only four days? The 8x3 Promotion was a means to make up for that lost day and still celebrate the holiday in the eyes of the customer. They could get three free drums for every eight they purchased, mix and match. I was often tasked with designing flyers to help the sales force show off this opportunity, using stock images and vector graphics. Printed on 8.5 x11 cardstock.

To encourage sales during lackluster months, the company used the Budget Buster promotion. During this particular January, Continental wanted to connect with the popular Super Bowl, creating the Super Budget Bowl promotion.

I photoshopped the company logo onto the uniform of a dramatic stock image and then built a flyer design around it. For the logo’s design, I was inspired by the historical Super Bowl logos of the past. On the back, two player silhouettes race for the glory through the various possible prize stages.

When it came time to update these two Equipment Promotions, I came up with a dramatic concept involving a construction worker interacting with the title text. Since we could find appropriate stock photos, I took some of myself sporting several of the items inside.

For this flyer, I utilized one a photo of the telemarketing staff members I had taken for a separate project and doctored him up in a more dramatic, patriotic fashion. He was originally wearing a plain white t-shirt, and I crafted a U.S. flag design on instead.

Continental proudly displays these two Hallway Art pieces in their front entrance, both of which I was chief in creating. When I arrived at Continental, we began a long, involved label redesign process to update all of the older designs to a more modern format. The Continental one exhibited their top selling products, comparing their new label designs to the old. This also shows off the various mock ups of products I created in Photoshop when items needed to be conceptualized or simply did not exist in stock, as many of the drums did. It was also my duty for photograph and clip products that did exist, for the catalog, tech sheets, and flyers. Durable Component Tech, a sub-corporation, sold hardware and tools, and this piece showed off the various demonstration images they had collected over the years.

In order to inform consumers about the Superbug crisis, I created the Continental Heroes mini-comic. This small 8.5x11 brochure featured Continental’s top two pest control aerosols flying around and fighting an army of nasty mutant bedbugs. Key facts were explained in word captions and on the back cover. This brochure was so popular that it was reprinted for several years after its initial launch.

To help promote business, often novelties were brandished with the company’s logo that sales persons could give away to customers or at events. I was sometimes tasked with giving these items a bit more of a unique touch. For the Red Solo Cups, I gave the slogan “American-Made Industrial Grade” a polished type treatment with a mechanical, industrial feel. On a Promotional Winter Hoodie, I designed an exaggerated construction worker of comic-book proportions armed with a shield bearing the company logo and one of their top chemical sprayers. I also took the Inhibitaur mascot I had formerly created for one of the top selling products and gave him a patriotic paint job to go on an Independence Day Promotional Shirt.

This is an example of one of the many brochures I designed while at Continental Research. The goal was to explain which products should be marketed to schools and related departments during the end of the school year. This was in order to help recover facilities from the wear and tear left by the chaos of children. I chose bright, alternative colors that complimented the various products. I also incorporated several of the illustrations and images from the fronts of the products and photos of where they might be used. The cover showcases another one of my own hand-drawn illustrations.

Our task was to redesign the marketing package for an existing classic film. I was assigned 2001: A Space Odyssey. For the theatrical poster, I focused on a simple, iconic, abstract image of HAL’s eye. The type is Avant Garde and Bauhaus combined. For the DVD cover, I repeated the poster graphics. The back uses a more mysterious image of red clouds and stars.

For my motion titles, I continued the idea of the iconic image of HAL’s eye from the poster and added footage of a lost astronaut floating in space. The type zooms and blurs, mimicking a style seen in the 1960s.

The goal was to create a typeface using found objects. I selected classic green army men, cutting each apart & glueing them together. For the product poster, I wanted to mimic propoganda and maintain a gritty, nostalgic feel. On the supplemental poster, I used the leftover bits of the army men as a border. The event is fictional, and the artists featured were classmates.

Comic Examples

For this project, we chose images from our Clipfile Binders that demonstrated a specific theme or trend and built a Flash website showcasing them. I focused on the used of solid red and black in design and included examples from history, posters, covers, comic books, and logos.

About the Designer


As a group project, we were asked to recreate the identity of Forest Park. We chose a modern, text-only design. We wanted visitors to focus on the park’s existing beauty, and use our design as a framing element. Our identity included a main logo set in Archer. We had two sets of sub identities, one for location signs and the other for walking signs. The location signs were large, glass windows which showcased each location.

HelpThem.com was a campaign meant to inform the public about the problems of teenage homelessness. I chose to produce a guerilla marketing campaign by screenprinting several boxes and placing them in public locations. They were meant to simulate the actual boxes a homeless individual might live in. Each box contained key facts and the address of the website.

Continuing the HelpThem.com project, these MetroLink ads were created to emphasize the message from the boxes and deliver a call to action. Each ad showed a youth’s face, a quote, and the address of the website.
