’m often asked why I don’t write or tell more stories about my experiences with celebrities I’ve come to know during a 40-plus-year career in sports and entertainment, hospitality and security. The truth is, I would love to, and in the right situation and in certain circles, I do. In fact, I have segments and chapters of a book – long written and partially outlined – shelved for another day.

The reality is, however, I’m not a kiss-and-tell

kind of guy. Maybe it’s the Italian in me practicing the street code of “omertà.” Perhaps it’s the NDAs. Honestly, it boils down to being a trusted professional. Often, it gets clouded and conflicted when it comes to telling a legitimate story versus dishing the dirt – or as it’s said today, spilling the tea.

Still, my professional experiences are indeed mine – implied, intellectual and real. In other words, I own the rights to my story. What was once “Can I have your autograph?” or “Can I

get a picture?” has matured through the years into simply living in the moment and having the memory – or in my case, the tale to tell.

My first full-time job – and the one that lit the fuse that continues to fuel my fire. Although intended to be a short-term gig to make some college money, I quickly found my footing. The Barclay possessed all the old-world elegance Philadelphia had to offer. High-society social events, a who’s who of permanent residents and a weekly VIP guest list that, all these years later, still blows me away. I was privy to many mid-level management meetings, and for scheduling purposes I handled three-day outlooks, biweekly forecasts and the VIP report. A lot for an 18-year-old, recent high school graduate.

In the 1980s, if you were listening to radio in Philly, for the most part, you were either rocking with WMMR, listening to Hot Hits on WCAU or getting your R&B groove on with WDAS. As for the rock stations, WYSP had some stake in the game as well. Popular DJ Anita Gevinson drove listenership up the dial, basically keeping 94.1 relevant, at least in the midday slot. During this time, Gevinson was also briefly engaged to the enigmatic rocker – and posthumously inducted 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Famer – Warren Zevon.

In essence, The Barclay, WYSP and Gevinson all shared space – albeit in different buildings – on the prominent real estate parcel known as Rittenhouse Square. Thus, Warren Zevon was no stranger to my VIP list while in town visiting Gevinson.

Everyone knew “Werewolves of London,” arguably Zevon’s most recognizable song. Being a fan of the California music scene, where he had collaborative roots, I was fairly versed in Zevon’s work. It made for easy conversation, and we hit it off immediately. But having untethered access to celebrities comes with learned responsibility and maturity.

Some days I’d spend more time talking to Zevon than making tips to support my college fund. Frankly, conversations with Warren were fascinating – equal parts hysterically funny, somewhat bizarre and intensely passionate. And that was usually just talking about his songs – “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” and “Lawyers, Guns and Money” instantly coming to mind.

It wasn’t uncommon for me to put wrestling magazines in his room as we shared a common interest in “wrasslin.’” And there may have been a time or two when we topped off a talk with a shot of a then-newish spirit called Absolut Vodka.

Unfortunately, in a time before cellphones and social media, as the years passed, we unexpectedly fell out of touch. Despite being terminally ill, however, his later-life appearances on “David Letterman’s Late Show” – where he famously reminded us to “enjoy every sandwich” – were comforting, just knowing that his insightful wit had remained even in the face of death.

A

s Philadelphia prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be “Born and Raised in South Philly.” It’s more than a slogan on a T-shirt – it’s a way of life.

That phrase took on new meaning when I stumbled across a Facebook group with more than 21,000 members who proudly identify with it.

Inspired by that group and my own experiences, I started thinking about the different ways people connect to South Philly. Over the years, I’ve noticed our readers tend to fall into four groups:

Group 1 includes those who were not born and raised in South Philly but live here now and have embraced our culture.

Group 2 are natives who moved away but speak fondly of their roots.

Group 3 left but return often for work, family or to buy their favorite foods.

Group 4 are the people who were born and raised in South Philly and never left. There may be other groups among our readers, but I find these to be the most prominent.

LIFE

Do you fall into one of these groups? If so, say it loud and proud: “I was born and raised in South Philly!” That pride is reflected in the lives of many who remain deeply connected to the neighborhood. For my 100th contribution, I want to spotlight a few proud Group 4 South Philadelphians who, like me, continue to celebrate their roots.

One such example is Patricia Itri, a logistics specialist and assistant coach for the St. Anthony’s girls’ basketball team, shares TikTok videos about growing up as a South Philly Italian Catholic and highlighting favorite landmarks. She attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine and graduated from St. Maria Goretti.

“What I love most about South Philly is the convenience of being close to pretty much all your wants and needs, whether it be restaurants, sporting events and shopping,” Itri said.

Itri enjoys strolling through the neighborhood, seeing familiar faces and meeting new people who “sometimes become your friend.”

She takes pride in sharing South Philly’s rich history and favorite landmarks with visitors.

Itri’s favorite South Philly tradition is Sunday dinners at her grandparents’ house, gathered around the dining room table with the extended family.

She recalls sharing macaroni from a big serving dish, meatballs and gravy on a side platter, and the salad tossed in a wooden

bowl with large wooden utensils.

Itri shared her hopes for South Philly’s future, saying, “I would love to see the trolleys come back! I used to love to ride them as a kid.” She also hopes that “the remaining Catholic churches stay as beautiful as they are, and parishioners do whatever it takes to preserve them.”

Like Itri, Nick Lanciano celebrates South Philly through his own creative lens. Lanciano, the owner of Lanciano Creative Studio, posts videos about growing up in South Philly and his favorite local spots. If you ever watch one of his videos, you gotta love his signature opening line, “Yo, Goombahs!”

He attended Annunciation Catholic School and graduated from St. John Neumann High School.

“I don’t think I’ll ever move out of South Philly, but if I did, I’d probably miss the food most,” Lanciano said. “We have so many great options all within walking distance.” He recalled neighbors exchanging food during the holidays and playing street games – not just sports – on the block. On hot summer days, kids would go under the fire plug, as the locals called it, sometimes with the city’s sprinkler attached.

Mostly, he remembers sitting outside with neighbors “just talking or listening to Phillies games on the radio.” Lanciano added he misses “face-to-face communication” with his friends and their families.

“If I could shape the future of South Philly, I would embrace what made us special in the past and find ways for old and the new residents to reconnect via block parties, festivals or just by sitting outside on the steps and talking,” Lanciano said.

THE ST. NICHOLAS OF TOLENTINE Italian Festival is held the first Sunday of October each year. Presented annually since 1987, St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish is dedicated to keeping alive the spirit and faith of the early Italian immigrants.

The Italian Festival features a religious procession led by the Pastor, Fr. Nicholas Martorano, free music and entertainment all day, food, rides, games and shopping. The central focus of the celebration takes place at the 11 a.m. mass (held at 10:30 a.m. for that day only), followed immediately by the religious procession throughout the parish neighborhood with the statues of saints and their faithful following.

They were.

I literally gasped at the sight.

Nana asked the owner if I could try them on. There was a bench inside the doorway, surrounded by ladies’ dresses and scarves, and sunglasses and hair dye. Something for everyone.

And a pair of teal blue shoes.

It was the first time I used a ped. Nana reached for a pair from a small cardboard box on the foot rack next to the bench.

They were the color of nude pantyhose but only covered the foot. So, you didn’t dirty the shoes you may not buy, Nana gently explained.

I put the peds on and slipped my feet into the shoes. They were beautiful.

I spun around for Nana to see. I think the joy on my face was enough for her. She reached into her little purse with the silver clasp at top – burgundy like my St. Nick’s uniform – and pulled out a $5 bill – folded among a few other bills next to her tangerine color lipstick. She paid the cashier for the shoes. I was so excited I asked if I could wear them home.

On a hot August afternoon. Walking beneath sunny skies as I held my Nana’s hand. Learning for the first time, the joy that a pair of shoes can bring into your life.

A gift from my grandmother that filled my heart to the brim with a memory that is eternal.

She knew. I think I dragged her the entire two blocks down 7th Street, somewhere between Mifflin Street and Snyder Avenue, as I prayed they’d still be there.

Ken Adams, a longtime supporter of Philadelphia RowHome Magazine, has been a proud sponsor of its annual WishRock Award Program since its inception more than a decade ago.

Along with a trophy, winners receive a $500 gift, a generous contribution from Ken Adams, who strongly believes in the program’s message: Anything is possible if you believe in yourself.

A South Philadelphia native, Adams has co-owned Jack Duggan’s Pub at PHL International Airport for the past 25 years. Although he has a background in hospitality, and served as a consultant for IBEW Local 98, Ken is no stranger to charity and its immeasurable impact on the community.

“Helping children is close to home,” he explained. Adams, who attended college on a football scholarship, said he knows what it’s like to rely on the generosity of others to achieve your goals. “I make it a priority to give back to the community,” he said.

“Especially when it comes to investing in the future generation of emerging leaders.”

Adams combined his love of sports with a desire to teach, leading him to Bishop Neu-

mann High School, where he was a gym teacher for eight years. He also served as Supervisor for Burke Playground at 2nd and Jackson Streets in South Philadelphia.

His love of teaching and athletics continued when he joined the hospitality industry. A former owner of Katie O’Brien’s Pub, Ken met a customer whose son had a disability. To help, Adams organized a successful 5-K Run in Haddon Township, uniting family, friends, neighbors and members of the community to rally for a cause.

His support of those with disabilities is still a priority for Ken Adams, a member of the Board of Directors for the Philadelphia Chapter of the Variety Club. The Variety Club and its members work tirelessly to support children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities. Some of their many efforts include providing sponsorships for disabled individuals (ages 5-24) to attend summer camps each year.

The WishRock Award symbolizes a step along the journey to success. It serves as a reminder to youngsters to believe in yourself, follow your dreams and reach out to help others along the way.

Thanks to individuals like Ken Adams, Philadelphia RowHome Magazine’s efforts to encourage future generations to believe in their dreams is catching on. And leading by example is a powerful motivator. Ken Adams is proof of that. PRH

Honor Presented for preserving Italian American traditions S A L U T E T O S E RV I C E

Jody Della Barba, a founding member of the 1492 Society, was honored as Person of the Year at the organization’s annual dinner at IATSE Ballroom in South Philadelphia in October.

The 1492 Society is a nonprofit that raises funds for Philadelphia’s Columbus Day Parade and promotes Italian American heritage.

Its annual dinner is one of its largest fundraisers and honors Italian Americans who have distinguished themselves in the community. Each year, board members vote to select one primary honoree, along with three additional award recipients for community service, law enforcement and charitable contributions.

“It’s very humbling, and it was a big surprise,” Della Barba said. She usually coordinates the honorees and takes part in choosing nominees each year. Her husband Victor designs and frames the awards for the organization including her award, this year.

Della Barba didn’t suspect anything as her husband worked on the awards in the basement, a place she rarely visits.

To Della Barba, the award reflects the appreciation people have for her work preserving

Italian American traditions.

“I enjoy what I do and getting that recognition from all the people in my committee really means a lot,” she said.

Della Barba’s husband, son, daughter-in-law and sisters attended the event, along with her nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends. She saw them walking in and figured they were simply attending, since she had bought some tickets for family. Her sister helped get everyone together by coordinating with other members.

When Della Barba first heard her name called as the winner, she was stunned, especially because she was supposed to present the final award herself. Although she doesn’t remember her speech, she does remember the moment: the appreciation, the flowers from fellow members, well wishes from Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson, Councilmember Mark Squilla, and the warmth of being surrounded by her community.

Della Barba has been involved with the Columbus Parade since 1986, serving for nearly four decades as a parade coordinator and secretary for the 1492 Society, managing meetings and arranging fundraising.

“I think every person on the

board should be getting an award because they are just wonderful people,” Della Barba said. “No one gets paid. They are there for a good cause: to keep up the Italian American traditions and the parade.”

Mark Rago, a senior board member of the 1492 Society and someone who has known Jody Della Barba for the past 40 years, agrees wholeheartedly.

He and Della Barba also belonged to the Frank Rizzo Lodge, where Della Barba was a founding member, and Rago was the former president.

Rago said the recognition was “well deserved,” adding that he worked with Jody for many years on charitable efforts at various levels.

He noted that Della Barba’s generosity extends beyond the 1492 Society.

She is active in the Girard Estate community and supports charitable efforts across South Philadelphia.

“She’s also someone who works very hard and is selfless,” Rago said.

Looking ahead, Della Barba hopes more people join the 1492 Society and help sustain the traditions she and others have worked to protect.

“A lot of people don’t appreciate what they have until they lose it,” Della Barba said. “Never take anything for granted or assume it will be there forever.” PRH

In 1926, Philadelphia threw a birthday bash for the nation. It was chosen to host the nation’s 150th anniversary, celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776. It was spearheaded

by Philadelphia’s department store titan John Wanamaker, who envisioned a fair that fused patriotism and modern technology. It featured acres of grandeur with multiple patriotic pavilions, international exhibits, a stadium, food and entertainment venues and a main entrance marked by a gigantic, illuminated Liberty Bell standing 80 feet tall and adorned with 26,000 electric lightbulbs to dazzle attendees.

hen Earl Courter Jr. walks into a venue, people notice – not because he seeks attention, but because his quiet resilience commands it. At a recent Veterans Day gathering at the All 4 One Memorial at 18th and Bigler streets in South Philadelphia, Courter leaned on his prosthetic leg and was greeted

warmly by fellow servicemen. The flags waved, the crowd applauded, and yet Courter’s eyes seemed fixed elsewhere, on the memories of comrades who never came home.

“I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me,” he said, his voice steady but firm. “And don’t call me a hero.

I did my job.”

That humility defines Courter, a highly decorated Army veteran from Delran, New Jersey, whose life changed forever in Vietnam when machine gun fire tore through his platoon. He lost part of his right leg that day, but what he gained was a perspective on service, sacrifice and gratitude that continues to shape his community decades later.

Courter grew up in Delran, a small town across the river from Philadelphia. His sense of duty was shaped by history itself. When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Courter felt a call to serve. “I believed JFK’s quote: ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.’ That’s why I enlisted.

I was thrilled,” Courter said.

At Fort Bragg, now called Fort Liberty, he trained with the 82nd Airborne Division. Known as the “All American Division,” their motto was “All the Way!” and train-

ing emphasized toughness, adaptability and leadership by example.

“I learned how to survive, how to eat snakes,” he recalled with a wry smile. Those lessons would prove invaluable in the jungles of Vietnam and the challenges of civilian life, where survival meant perseverance rather than combat.

The jungles of Vietnam were unforgiving. Courter’s platoon faced ambushes, relentless gunfire and the constant threat of unseen enemies. One mission ended in tragedy when his unit was caught in a deadly crossfire.

“It was like yesterday when my whole platoon got wiped out,” Courter said. Survivor’s guilt became a lifelong companion. He was struck by machine gun fire, gravely wounded and rushed to a field hospital.

“In the hospital, my leg was reattached, and I could move my toes,” he remembered. “Then I lost blood.

I was in a coma. Gangrene set in, and I lost the leg.”

The physical pain was immense, but the emotional scars ran deeper.

“Every Veterans Day, every Memorial Day, I see their faces,” he admitted. “The flags aren’t just symbols. They’re reminders of the men who didn’t make it back.”

Returning home was not easy.

Vietnam veterans often faced indifference, or worse, hostility from the public. Courter, like many, had to rebuild his life quietly, without

the parades or recognition given to veterans of earlier wars.

Over the years, he relied on nine different prosthetic legs to stay active. Each one was a testament to his determination not to let injury define him. “Lead by example,” he said. “Don’t ask someone to do something you can do yourself.”

Courter carried more than memories home from Vietnam. For more than 50 years, fragments of bullets remained lodged in his body, a silent reminder of the day his platoon was ambushed. Only recently were they finally removed, closing a chapter that had lingered for half a century.

Courter’s resilience extended beyond his personal recovery. He became treasurer for the Disabled American Veterans Department of New Jersey, helping lead outreach efforts for the state’s 19,000 members. His work ensured that veterans received the support, recognition and resources they deserved.

At public events, Courter consistently turned the spotlight away from himself. At South Philly’s All 4 One Veterans Service, he thanked fellow veterans for their sacrifices, insisting that the true heroes were those who never returned.

Courter’s reflections resonate deeply during Memorial Day ceremonies. For him, the holiday is not about barbecues or parades, it’s about remembrance.

“The faces behind the flags,” he said, pausing. “That’s what I see.

That’s what I carry.”

His words remind communities that freedom is not abstract; it is built on the lives of men and women who

gave everything.

Courter’s story is part of a larger narrative. The Vietnam War claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Americans and left countless others wounded physically and emotionally. Unlike World War II veterans, many Vietnam vets returned to a divided nation, where their service was overshadowed by political controversy.

For decades, they struggled for recognition. Courter’s humility reflects that generational experience: a refusal to glorify war, paired with a quiet insistence on honoring sacrifice.

In Delran and South Philadelphia, Courter has become a symbol of resilience. His presence at veterans’ events bridges generations, reminding younger audiences of the cost of war.

Courter’s leadership in veterans’ organizations has ensured that thousands of men and women receive the benefits and respect they deserve.

His story inspires not only veterans but also civilians who see in him the embodiment of grit and gratitude.

Earl Courter Jr. may have lost his right leg in Vietnam, but he never lost his sense of duty. His life is a testament to resilience, humility and community. He insists he is not a hero, but in his refusal to claim that title, he embodies it more than most.

“I’m still wearing my 60-year-old uniform,” he said proudly. “I’m proud to be a vet.”

The project is intended to strengthen public safety and improve daily life for residents. The Philadelphia Police Department will maintain and monitor the cameras.

Scott Green, manager of the bank’s Broad and Porter office, said in a press release that the support reflects the bank’s commitment to neighborhood partnerships. “It’s about more than just banking; it’s about investing in the well-being of our neighbors,” he said.

Launches BLOCS Speaker Series Calling Philadelphia Business Leaders to Invest in Education and Workforce Development

he year 2025 proved quite productive for Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS), which saw a total of $206 million committed to its scholarship mission for 33,000 students in Pennsylvania. Set to mark 46 years of transforming lives, the state’s premier scholarship organization for pre-K through 12th grade aligns itself with more than 500 schools across 65 of the commonwealth’s counties, with Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School

among its grateful beneficiaries.

On Oct. 1, 2025, BLOCS and the South Philly-based secondary institution launched a speaker series geared toward, as CEO Rob Delany stated, igniting “thoughtful conversations around civics and education.”

Dennis Powell, a 1967 alumnus of Bishop Neumann High School, a predecessor of Neumann-Goretti, spoke to the Union League, in part, to laud the benefits of smallbusiness donors’ affiliations with schools. With the redirection of their state taxes to BLOCS, contributors can secure up to a 90 percent tax credit, a nice perk,

“Leadership works best when a clear vision is paired with disciplined, manageable steps,” Powell said, referencing his book, Leading from the Top. “Drawing on lessons from national leaders, we want local business owners to translate those ideas into daily choices that reflect their values and strengthen their communities.”

Over the two-hour event, Powell said BLOCS has designed a donor experience that is straightforward, transparent and easy to navigate. He emphasized how effortless it is for individuals and businesses to make a meaningful impact on students in Pennsylvania.

Delany put it plainly: “BLOCS makes doing EITC as easy as 1-2-3. One, two – check line 12 of your Pennsylvania state tax return.

If the number is ‘three,’ meaning it’s more than $3,000, you should be doing EITC.” “When donors reach out to us, we send an agreement,” Delany said. “Four more clicks on your phone and you’re changing lives and impacting the workforce.”

At Neumann-Goretti, that impact is clear.

Since its formation in 2004 through the merger of St. John Neumann and St. Maria Goretti high schools, the school’s bond with BLOCS has been a steady boon in helping secondary education in South Philly approach the century mark.

“What they have done is provide opportunities for thousands of young men and women. The schools that are able to provide for all students interested in receiving an education rooted in the Catholic faith are now able to do so because of BLOCS.” BLOCS is planning its next speaker, and each new presenter will help expand the series’ focus on how businesses can support future leaders.

“Participating in BLOCS is more than just a donation,” Delany said. “It’s an investment in our community and our schools – an investment that will strengthen the local business ecosystem.”

s we gently move into a new year and embrace another fresh start, I began thinking about how life carries us through different seasons, both physically and metaphorically.

For most of us, the highlight of winter, our cold-

est and darkest time of year, is the holiday season, which gleefully encompasses food, family and traditions.

My hope is that in today’s world, we are learning to shape every season of our lives, not just the holiday season, in ways that honor our values and emotional needs.

Remember, before any action can take place, we must have a change of heart and a change of mind. It goes without saying that within the trio of food, family and traditions, food is the easiest ingredient. Simply imagine the aroma of gravy, meatballs, pasta and the array of delicious complementary dishes that fill most South Philadelphia and surrounding area homes on any given Sunday.

We all have our choice of nostalgic comfort food. For me, Thanksgiving is not Thanksgiving without escarole soup. Every

year when I make it, I hold my loved ones that have passed in my heart, and I love to share the story of why and how I learned to make it years ago.

Sometimes just the scent of a certain food can carry us to another time and place. If we allow it, that memory lets us spend a few moments with our loved ones who are no longer here. We can be present and enjoy the food we once shared with our loved ones as a way of keeping them with us.

Family is the next piece in this trio. Family is by far the most important, and for some it can be the most complicated. Sometimes as decades tick by, the landscape of what many families look like drastically changes. I can personally attest to this. The reality is that time with our family is a gift.

If you have a large, loving family around you, know what a blessing it is and stay close to the parts of family that truly matter: love.

Sometimes as it goes, we can become distant or estranged from family members. In these cases, it is often necessary to take a hard look at ourselves.

We have all heard the expression, “Life is short.” Indeed, it is. Do not waste valuable time.

Consider forgiveness and being the person who reaches out to repair a relationship.

Remember, forgiveness is freedom; forgiveness is for you.

At times, we grow into the decision to release the past and carry forward only who and what serves us today.

Truly reconciling and letting go is a process. It takes time and hard work, and it allows us to stay true to ourselves.

Not every family will look the same. The reality is that family consists of those who support and lift us up. Surround yourself with those who make your world better. If you find yourself on your own, be your own best friend. There is a vast difference between solitude and isolation.

We can make connections outside of the typical family picture. Meaningful relation-

ships can be found in support groups, clubs, sports, hobbies and men’s or women’s groups.

Keep things simple and never measure your worth by comparing yourself to anyone – especially on social media.

The final part of our trio is tradition, the passing down of customs or beliefs from generation to generation. It can be as simple as Sunday dinner. We can honor the past and our family members by respecting and carrying on the traditions that resonate. As the seasons in our lives change, we may give ourselves permission to create new traditions that align with who we are today.

The key is to find the balance between the nostalgia of our past and the beliefs and principles we value today, and then find peace within.

DIRECTIONS Heat olive oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Add mixed vegetables and cook until tender-crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Stir-fry for an additional 2-3 minutes.

In a separate bowl, whisk together minced garlic, soy sauce and honey. Pour over the chicken and vegetables. Season with salt and pepper. Serve hot over brown rice or quinoa.

TIPS Use a variety of colorful vegetables to add visual appeal and nutrients to the dish. Brown rice or quinoa can be cooked simultaneously with the stir-fry for a complete meal. This recipe is low in calories and rich in protein, making it an excellent option for a heart-healthy diet.

VARIATIONS Add some crunch by sprinkling chopped nuts or seeds on top of the stir-fry. Use different protein sources like tofu, shrimp, or beef for a change of pace. Experiment with various seasonings like ginger, cumin, or chili flakes to give the dish a unique flavor.

Q: My father left me his home in his Will, but my sister, who is the Executrix, will not transfer the deed from the estate to me. This has been going on for more than a year. Is there something I can do to resolve this? Is there a timeframe for the distribution of assets that the Executor must follow?

A: I would start with a written request to your sister. If that fails, then you can file a Petition for a Citation with the Orphans’ Court of Philadelphia, compelling your sister to file what is known as a Formal Accounting of the Estate assets and proposed distribution. At this point, I recommend hiring a competent probate attorney who litigates in the Orphans’ Court. If your sister continues to fail in her fiduciary obligations as the Executrix, the attorney can petition to remove her, and if she caused financial harm to the estate, she can be sued for those damages. As for a

timeframe, a reasonable distribution period is usually within a year of the date of death, though this can vary depending on the complexity of the estate administration.

Q: If I have to put my father in a nursing home, how do I keep the state from taking his house, which is in his name and paid in full?

A: At this late juncture, you may not be able to do anything. When a senior applies for Medicaid for assisted living or a nursing home, there is a 5-year lookback period in which the Department of Public Welfare reviews any transfer of an asset for less than fair market value. If there were any such transfers, there would be a period of Medicaid Ineligibility. It is highly recommended to consult with an eldercare attorney who specializes in Medicaid planning.

While active shooters and their attacks on school grounds have become a focus of security discussions, other forms of violence also threaten students, faculty, staff, and school communities. A ctive Shooter: An active shooter is a person engaged in killing or attempting to kill people with firearms.

These situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly, often resulting in harm or death. Shooters usually select targets and plan attacks in advance to cause the most harm in the shortest time.

Lockdown procedures, evacuation, or run-hide-fight are among the most important security protocols, and immediate response is crucial.

A ctive Assailant: An active assailant is a person engaged in a violent attack with a weapon other than a firearm.

These attacks may involve vehicles, explosive devices, stabbings, or assaults with blunt objects, all intended to cause injuries or mass panic and terror. Assailant attacks are less common than shootings but can be just as deadly and require immediate response.

O ther Violent Threats: Campus threats can include assaults, fights, or threatening behavior involving knives, blunt objects, or improvised weapons. Unlike active shooter or assailant cases, these incidents are usually more isolated, involve fewer people, and often stem from personal conflict rather than random violence.

W arning Signs: Behavioral indicators, environmental indicators, and other warning signs must be taken seriously by campus security professionals as opportunities for early detection. Be aware of potential warning signs, which may include unusual behavior, verbal or online

threats, suspicious packages, or signs of advance planning.

Communication with administrators and security personnel is essential to identify and report potentially violent behavior before an incident.

R esponse Considerations: Response protocols are developed for different types of campus threats, and nearly every institution has them. Examples of measures in a school response plan include evacuation, lockdown, immediate response by law enforcement and emergency services, coordination with local law enforcement and security personnel, and communication with staff and students.

CONCLUSION Differentiating between types of threats is a crucial step in any threat assessment or response plan. The more a school or district knows about a threat, the better it can respond. By preparing for multiple scenarios, schools make campuses safer and are more likely to have a quick, coordinated, and effective response if an incident occurs.

So, take a load off and let’s get intimate From a young age, I’ve cherished the memories of our family gatherings. These gatherings were filled with the delightful sounds of jazz music, mouthwatering food and infectious laughter. Our house became a place where we could come together, not just on special occasions like holidays, but also on ordinary days to simply listen to good music and share stories.

Sitting around the table with my family, I’ve learned so much about recipes and jazz artists. There were always stories to tell, from the wild adventures of our parents and grandparents to the valuable lessons they imparted to us. These lessons shaped us into the people we are today, and they’re the ones that make our family so special.

One of the most cherished traditions in our family is our cooking. We have our own set of recipes that have been passed down through generations. My dad’s corn pudding and my auntie’s famous gumbo are among our favorites. And let’s not forget about the macaroni and cheese. I hold the title for the best macaroni

Music is also an integral part of our family gatherings. My dad often plays the guitar and my Auntie Ro shows the kids how to play the piano. She’s an amazing pianist and her music always brings us together.

No matter what happens, our family gatherings are always a good time. They’re moments we cherish and will always remember. I’m grateful for the people in my life and the memories we’ve made together.

As we enter the new year of 2026, I want to take a moment to appreciate the ones around us. These memories are so important, and I want to make sure that we spend enough time together. I think we should schedule regular dates with our families to get together more often. We don’t want to find ourselves gathering at funerals instead of enjoying each other’s company.

In every family, there’s a dish that brings everyone running to the table. For Chef MJ, it’s her Smoked Gouda Baked Macaroni & Cheese, a creamy, smoky favorite layered with rich cheeses and her signature Veggielicious seasoning. It’s comfort, tradition and togetherness in one bubbling pan.

INGREDIENTS

 1 lb dried cavatappi pasta

sharp cheddar cheese, divided

 1/2 cup allpurpose flour

 2 cups shredded smoked Gouda cheese, divided

 1/2 cup unsalted butter  2 1/2 cups heavy cream  1/2 cup evaporated milk  4 cups shredded

 1/2 tbs Veggielicious

INSTRUCTIONS Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 3-quart baking dish (9-by-13 inches). Set aside. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 1 minute less than the package directs for al

dente. Drain and drizzle with a little olive oil to prevent sticking. While the water heats, shred the cheeses and toss to combine. You’ll need about 3 cups for the sauce, 1 1/2 cups for the middle layer and 1 1/2 cups for the topping. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Sprinkle in flour and whisk to combine. Cook for about 1 minute, whisking often. Slowly pour in about 2 cups of heavy cream, whisking constantly until smooth. Add the remaining heavy cream and the evaporated milk, whisking until smooth and combined. Continue cooking over medium heat, whisking often, until the mixture thickens to a very thick consistency. Remove from heat. Stir in the spices and 1 1/2 cups of the cheese mixture until melted and smooth. Add another 1 1/2 cups of cheese and stir until fully melted. In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained pasta with the cheese sauce. Stir to coat completely. Pour half the pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish.

Top with 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheese. Add the remaining pasta mixture. Sprinkle the top with the remaining 1 1/2 cups of cheese. Bake for 15 minutes, or until bubbly and lightly golden. Dust with additional smoked paprika before serving.

ran Caffè L’Aquila isn’t simply a restaurant. It’s rooted in Food.

Family. Tradition. Its story stretches back long before it opened at 1716 Chestnut Street.

Co‑owners Riccardo Longo and Stefano Biasini rebuilt the café after the original award‑winning location in Abruzzo was destroyed in the 2009 earthquake.

Longo and Biasini wanted guests to feel transported to Italy the moment they walked in.

They brought in the architect from the Abruzzo café and the entire restaurant was designed and built in Italy before shipping it to Phila-

delphia, including Carrara marble, Murano glass, Bisazza mosaic and Roman Travertino.

Born in Roame, Longo moved to Philadelphia at age 4 and grew up between two cultures. “I was blessed to spend summers in Italy with my family,” he said. His parents traveled through all 20 regions, giving him an early look at the food traditions that define towns across the peninsula.

“At a young age I realized not only that ‘Italian cuisine’ in America was very different from that of Italy, but that the cuisine and wine in Italy varied from region to region and even town to town,” he said.

Longo’s Sugo della Domenica, his family’s Sunday gravy from the Cilento region, is one of the café’s most popular dishes. The slow‑cooked tomato sauce reflects his family’s roots below the Amalfi Coast and is made with hand‑rolled water‑and‑flour fusilli, wild boar meatballs, braciole, sweet and spicy sausage and grated capra cheese. His Roman carbonara, another childhood favorite, carries the flavors he remembers from summers in Lazio. Biasini adds his own traditions with Abruzzese staples such as arrosticini, scamorza and chitarra pasta.

The café also highlights Italy’s regional cooking through a year‑round program featuring 52 cities, one each week, representing all 20 regions. Summer highlights coastal destinations like Amalfi and Taormina, while autumn and winter feature cities such as Barolo and Aosta. Longo said centuries of outside influence shaped the cuisines of thousands of towns, creating the diversity that still defines Italy today.

Biasini, an Italian gelato champion, creates flavors using ingredients sourced from across Italy, including pistachios from Sicily, hazelnuts from Piemonte, amaretto from L’Aquila and cherries from Modena. The café is also known for its gelato gastronomico, where Biasini pairs savory gelato with traditional dishes. One of the most talked‑about examples is Longo’s family carbonara topped with a cold, savory guanciale gelato, which he describes as “like an apple pie à la mode,” taken to an Italian extreme. Biasini’s son, Mattia, is learning the craft alongside him, carrying the family’s gelato tradition into the next generation.

The Italian Culture School deepens the experience by teaching the history behind each featured city and showing how food and tradition connect.

Family and tradition shape the café’s future. Longo’s daughter, Antonella, 26, is joining the business after years of studying and living in Italy. His brothers remain involved, and he credits his father, Mario, as

the inspiration behind their shared passion for Italian food and heritage. Biasini’s son, Mattia, is part of that next chapter, a reminder that the café’s story is still growing.

Longo describes the mission simply: “Our goal is to provide an authentic Italian experience to every guest. That might be an award-winning gelato or espresso in our caffe, watching Italian soccer with other Italians at our bar, taking a class in our Italian culture school, experiencing the cuisine and wine of an Italian city you have never been to, or purchasing a product of Italian excellence from our retail store. Whitman’s Chocolates The City That Loved Them First

or more than 100 years, Philadelphia families have enjoyed the iconic gold Whitman’s box filled with assorted chocolate confections. It was more than just a box of sweet treats; it became a treasured family tradition, an expression of gift giving and a symbol of exchanging devoted affections. Whitman’s is recognized as one of the oldest chocolate brands in the United States.

It was founded in Philadelphia in 1842

by Stephen F. Whitman, an enterprising young man of 19 years old. What started as a small confectionery shop on the waterfront in Philadelphia eventually grew into

a factory at the northeast corner of 5th and Race streets. In its early days, the shop catered to dock workers, their families and sailors by serving European-style sweets. These confections were crafted using exotic ingredients such as cocoa and nuts, which had been brought back from overseas voyages.

This blend of imported flavors and traditional recipes set the foundation for Whitman’s reputation for quality and innovation in chocolate making.

In 1854, Whitman’s introduced America’s first prepackaged candy box – a decorative box of sugar plums – setting a milestone in confectionery history.

Whitman’s Sampler was launched in 1912, popularized by the “French Edge” overhanging box lid and the innovative first use of cellophane wrapping, which added freshness and enhanced presenta-

tion. The Messenger Boy trademark logo introduced in 1915 suggested thoughtfulness, delivery and gift giving. The goldtone box’s elegant design featured serif letters with a small bird and an embroidered design, creating an impression reminiscent of a treasured heirloom.

Whitman emerged as a leading commercial innovator, becoming the largest importer of cellophane from France and designing memorable, attention-grabbing 2-foot holiday sampler boxes for sale in department stores.

During World War II, Whitman’s sent six million pounds of chocolate to U.S. servicemen. Women on the production line slipped handwritten notes into boxes – some led to postwar marriages.

Lingering long after the last chocolate is gone, the brand’s timeless slogan echoes: “A Woman Never Forgets the Man Who Remembers.” PRH

Walk into any American picnic and you’ll find potato salad drowning in mayonnaise, served ice-cold from the cooler. Cross the Atlantic to an Italian trattoria and you’ll discover something entirely different: warm, golden potatoes glistening with olive oil, fragrant with herbs, and served at room temperature.

This isn’t just a recipe difference; it’s a philosophical divide.

Italian potato salad, or insalata di patate, embodies the core principle of Italian cuisine: Let each ingredient be itself. Where American versions use mayonnaise as a blanket, Italian versions use olive oil as a conductor, orchestrating flavors rather than masking them.

The technique is deceptively simple but crucial: Dress the potatoes while still warm, allowing them to absorb the olive oil and vinegar like tiny, starchy sponges. PRH

The Recipe: Insalata di Patate Classica

Serves 6-8 INGREDIENTS

 2 lbs small waxy potatoes (Yukon Gold or fingerlings)

 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil (use your best)

 1/4 cup fresh Italian parsley, chopped

 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar

 2 tablespoons fresh basil, torn  1 tablespoon fresh oregano (or 1 teaspoon dried)

 1 teaspoon sea salt

OPTIONAL ADDITIONS (CHOOSE ONE OR TWO)

• Use waxy potatoes: They hold their shape and absorb flavors better than russets.

• Dress while warm: Nonnegotiable; cold potatoes won’t absorb the dressing.

• Quality olive oil matters: Use the good stuff.

• Fresh herbs only: Dried works for oregano, but parsley and basil must be fresh.

DIRECTIONS Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold salted water by 2 inches. Bring to a gentle boil and cook until easily pierced with a fork, 15 to 20 minutes. The key is tender but not mushy. Drain immediately and let cool just enough to handle. While it is still quite warm, slice into 1/4-inch rounds. This timing is everything – warm potatoes absorb dressing; cold potatoes just get coated. In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Taste and adjust; it should be bright and well-seasoned. Add warm potato slices to the dressing and toss gently but thoroughly. Let it stand for 10 minutes. Add herbs and any optional ingredients just before serving. Toss once more and taste for seasoning.

 Salt & pepper, to taste  2 tbs olive oil

FOR THE SEAFOOD

 2 tbs unsalted butter  2 cloves garlic, minced  1/4 cup white wine (dry)  1/4 cup freshly squeezed

 1/2 lb scallops  1/2 cup jumbo lump crab meat

FOR THE SAUCE lemon juice  1 tbs chopped fresh parsley  Salt & pepper, to taste

1. Prepare the veal. Season the veal medallions with salt & pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the veal for 2-3 minutes per side, or until cooked to your desired level of doneness. Transfer the veal to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. 2. Prepare seafood. Add the shrimp and scallops to the same skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until pink and cooked through. Remove the seafood from the skillet and set aside with the veal. 3. Make the sauce. Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter to the skillet. Once melted, add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Add the white wine and lemon juice, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook until slightly reduced, about 2-3 minutes. 4. Finish the dish. Stir in the lump crab meat and cook until heated through. Add the cooked shrimp and scallops back to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce. 5. Serve. Serve the veal medallions topped with the seafood mixture and spoon some of the lemon wine and butter sauce over the top. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately, over spaghetti or mashed potatoes and vegetable. Add parsley for garnish.

INGREDIENTS  1 pint grape tomatoes, halved  1 zucchini, diced  1 yellow squash, diced  1 16-ounce package shelf-stable or refrigerated gnocchi  1 12-ounce package precooked chicken sausage, chopped

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Mix 1/3 cup olive oil, garlic, Italian seasoning, kosher salt and ground black pepper. In a large bowl, combine tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, gnocchi and sausage. Toss with olive oil mixture until well coated. Add additional olive oil if necessary to coat, without having the ingredients soaking in oil. Pour the ingredients on a rimmed baking sheet. Place on the middle rack and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring once. Remove from oven once gnocchi turn golden and start to crisp. Transfer the baked ingredients to a serving bowl. Mix with Parmesan cheese and additional olive oil, if necessary. Serve and enjoy.

How did you meet?

This is always such a tricky question for us to answer because we actually met when we were children. I was in kindergarten; Michael was in first grade. We went to the same elementary school, and I was friends with his sister, with whom I also attended dancing school. We always joke that he fell in love with me because of how great of a performer I was in all the recitals he attended. We dated for the first time when we were 13. Well, as much as someone can “date” someone at that age. We held hands, kissed and talked on the phone/ AIM for hours. We “broke up,” then started dating again for a little bit in college. Another break up, but one that he insisted wasn’t real because he “knew” we were meant to be. Low and behold, in 2017, we reconnected and haven’t spent a day apart since.

How did the proposal happen?

We bought a house and totally gutted it. We were in the process of redoing it when he proposed.

We were supposed to be on our way to dinner with another couple, our cousins that we are super close to, and he said we had to stop at the house to check on our new floors. I walked in to rose petals and “marry me” in lit-up letters. It was cute.

I was sad my blinds weren’t redone yet! Lol.

What was your favorite part about wedding planning?

Every event I have ever attended at Cescaphe has been 10/10.

I loved picking our florals! I knew I wanted to do something a little trendy while still timeless.

Working with Beautiful Blooms to create the room design was so fun. We included a ton of greenery, candles and calla lilies. It looked like a scene from an old-time movie set in New York City.

Also... did I mention I had 25 bridesmaids? My absolute favorite part about the entire journey was doing everything with all of them. They showed up for me in ways I couldn’t believe, and we had the time of our lives during all the festivities.

What was your favorite part of your wedding?

We had a violinist and cellist performing during our ceremony as well as cocktail hour. They performed modern hits but in classical fashion. I heard “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift echo through The Switch House during cocktail hour and got goosebumps.

I’m a huuuuuuge Swiftie and loved how “Bridgerton” remade all those synth beats in the show, so it felt like my own magical moment. The speeches were also a highlight. My dad’s made us cry, and our Best Men and Maids of Honor killed it.

What did you do to make your wedding day extra special?

I included small finishing touches that were very personalized. I made my own napkins that featured handwriting thanking guests for joining us, as well as signage for the bar with the same vibe. My seating chart had Taylor Swift lyrics written across it. I wore blue Manolo Blahniks to pay homage to the queen of everything, Carrie Bradshaw.

What advice would you give to future brides and grooms?

Everything works out. It really does. Everyone says that and you can’t help but roll your eyes, but it’s true! Don’t sweat the small stuff. Nothing is ever that serious.

Our bride Chelsea and her groom Josh celebrated a breathtaking winter wedding – filled with elegance, warmth and the kind of magic that only the winter season can offer. The day began at the W Philadelphia in Center City, where the Bella Angel team arrived bright and early, ready to pamper Chelsea and her bridal party. The atmosphere in the suite was pure joy, laughter, conversation and happy energy from the moment we walked in. Our artists love wedding mornings, and this one was especially memorable.

As Chelsea settled into her chair, she shared her vision for a soft, romantic winter bridal look just as we had during her trial session.

She chose to wear her hair mostly down in long, glamorous waves that framed her face beautifully and complemented the elegance of a winter wedding. The style was effortless yet elevated, creating a stunning silhouette for photos.

Her makeup look was kept natural, fresh and luminous, enhancing her radiant skin with a soft glow that caught the light perfectly. Our team worked carefully to ensure everything felt seamless, polished and true to Chelsea’s personal style.

Once hair and makeup were finished, Chelsea stepped into her gown and the entire room paused.

The dress was absolutely breathtaking: elegant, timeless and undeniably perfect. The delicate detailing and flawless fit made her look as if she had stepped straight out of a bridal editorial. Paired with her cascading waves and radiant makeup, Chelsea captured the beauty of winter romance perfectly.

After the finishing touches were complete, the bridal party made their way to The Lucy by Cescaphe, one of Philadelphia’s most iconic venues. The reception space was a dream: crisp winter details, soft florals, sparkling accents and warm candlelight that created an intimate, enchanting atmosphere.

Chelsea and Josh’s wedding was a beautiful tribute to love, elegance and the gentle magic of a winter day. When Philadelphia RowHome Magazine honored Brianna Mazzola with the WishRock Award in 2020, she was a rising young artist with a powerhouse voice and a clear sense of purpose. Five years later, the South Philly native has transformed that early promise into a career defined by authenticity, resilience and a sisterhood that’s capturing audiences across the country.

Today, at 25, Mazzola is one-third of 3Quency, the breakout girl group formed on Netflix’s Building the Band. Their sound, their bond and their message have resonated with fans far beyond the show – but for Brianna, the journey still begins and ends with home.

RowHome caught up with Brianna to talk about the family roots that shaped her, the traditions she carries with her, and the path that led her from South Philly to the national stage.

Brianna, you started singing around 5 years old. Was there a particular moment when your family realized you had a gift for music? a: I’ve struggled with insomnia since I was a kid, and the only way my mom could get me to sleep was by driving around the city, hitting potholes and blasting music. That early connection made music feel like a lifeline. As I grew older and started performing, my family showed up to every single show in full support. But everything shifted after I performed at the Apollo Theater. I completely “blacked out” on stage, and this alter ego fearless version of myself came out. My family had supported me for years, hoping I would finally step into my power, and that night they saw it. After the Apollo, they went all in, helping me move to L.A. and making sure I had every resource possible to truly chase my dream.

How have your South Philly upbringing and family traditions shaped your journey as an artist? a: Growing up a secondgeneration Italian-American in South Philly shaped not only my sound but my entire work ethic and identity. I was raised on The Philadelphia International Sound, Motown, Doo-Wop, and artists like The O’Jays, The Jones Girls, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, and Frank Sinatra, plus the ‘90s Philly icons like Boyz II Men. The music became my foundation. My whole family sings, and many of them once dreamed of being artists themselves, but life pulled them in other directions. When I made the decision to pursue music

P seriously, they poured everything into me so I could take the dream further than they were able to. That legacy is something I carry with me every day.

What role has family played in supporting you from local performances to winning Building the Band? a: My family has always supported me at full volume… literally.

They pulled up to my performance at Amateur Night at the Apollo in a full party bus packed with friends and family. When I was younger, they made lightup posters of my face for every local performance. And today, with Building the Band, they show up to every show, buy merch, and support not just me but my girls. Their support hasn’t just followed me on my journey – it continues to grow with me.

What is your favorite family tradition? a: Christmas, without question.

From the Feast of the Seven Fishes to our Pollyanna gift exchange to baking biscotti and classic Italian Christmas cookies, the holidays were always filled with food, music and movies.

Those traditions are some of my most treasured memories.

Philadelphia RowHome Magazine’s WishRock Award honors young dreamers. How did receiving it in 2020 impact your journey and your outlook on success? a: Receiving the WishRock Award was such a meaningful moment, especially because it came from my home city. Much like how I was raised in Philly, I

tend to move fast, always focused on the next song, the next performance, the next goal. I’m always working and hustling, so I don’t always stop and remember to acknowledge what I’ve already accomplished. That award reminded me to celebrate myself, to honor the milestones, and to appreciate how far I’ve come.

In your earlier interview with Philadelphia RowHome Magazine, you advised young dreamers to “do it your way as authentically as possible because no one will ever truly understand your vision better than you.” How has that philosophy guided your path from the WishRock Award to 3Quency? a: Staying authentic has been the anchor of my entire journey.

From the WishRock Award to Building the Band, I never compromised who I was, and that includes the audiowave mask. For a long time, people didn’t understand it or they felt it made me ‘different,’ but that was exactly how I always felt growing up. When 3Quency formed, the girls immediately embraced not just the mask but the meaning behind it. I had no intention of letting it go, and hearing them fight for it and say, ‘Absolutely not – that’s YOU’ made our bond even stronger.

Now flash forward to our tour – seeing all our Frequencies in the audience wearing the mask and sharing stories about how it gave them confidence to be their true selves. Authenticity is our core value as a group. Our differences make us beautiful, and our shared vision keeps us unified and defines 3Quency. continued on page 80

ence was also the most emotional.

My grandparents, especially my grandma, were huge influences on my musical journey. Everyone called me her Mini-Me. Her love for The Supremes inspired mine for Destiny’s Child and girl groups in general.

When she passed, I felt like a part of me disappeared too. So, when the audition for Building the Band came up, I felt like she was guiding me toward it. My TV kept turning on Netflix by itself, and little signs kept appearing, all pushing me to go. On the show, I could feel her with me. Through every performance, through finding the girls, I felt her presence leading me.

Despite the grief I walked in with, the entire experience felt destined.

What has been your proudest achievement since winning Building the Band? a: Going on tour with 3Quency and Soulidified has been one of my proudest accomplishments. We became a family on the show, and continuing that bond on the road, performing together and growing together has been incredibly special.

I’m proud of what we built and even prouder of how we’ve kept it going.

How has being part of 3Quency helped you grow personally and professionally compared to your solo career? a: 3Quency helped heal a part of

me I thought I had lost. After my grandma passed, I felt disconnected from music and from the dream we shared. The group reminded me why I started this and who I started for.

I know she guided me to the girls.

Our sisterhood is real – it’s grounding, and it’s beautiful. 3Quency didn’t just elevate my artistry, but it brought a huge piece of my grandmother’s dream and mine to life.

How do you balance reinventing yourselves creatively with staying

true to your roots? a: Evolution is natural, whether you’re an artist or not. Our roots and values are the foundation, but part of being human and being an artist is growing, learning and finding new ways to express that growth. We honor where we came from while always pushing toward where we’re headed.

How has signing with Sony/ Columbia changed the trajectory of your career? a: Working with our Records family at Sony/Columbia has been a dream.

They’ve shaped artists and groups who inspired us long before we even met each other. With them, we’ve been able to release music and visuals we’re deeply proud of, and we’re only just getting started. Their support has elevated our vision and expanded what’s possible for us as a group.

Records, alongside our manager, Johnny Wright, have been working nonstop to help us become the group we know we are capable of being. We are so beyond grateful for our team and can’t wait to share what’s coming!

What’s next for 3Quency – new music, touring, collaborations? a: 3Quency is working nonstop on new music, new tour dates and new collaborations. We’re especially excited about traveling outside the U.S. and going overseas with our brothers Soulidified.

There is so much coming, and we can’t wait to share what’s next.

Q: Ori, you’re known as the “Hollywood Fixer.” How did you get that nickname? a: I got that title back in the early 70s by a very dear friend who introduced me to Ralph Serpe and Dino DeLaurentis, both big Hollywood producers. The first film I was part of was Across 110th Street with Anthony Quinn. While they were filming in New York, they were getting blocked. We went to Frank Costello; I called him

Uncle Frank. The problem was handled very quickly. The next film was The Valachi Papers with Charles Bronson; there were problems on set with an actor and the director which I handled in one meeting. Then in Boston, when they were filming The Brinks Job, I got called to Boston

by Ralph Serpe to handle some issues which were easily corrected. Later, I enjoyed dinner with the cast and the chief of police.

Naomi Campbell… too much to mention. You can read a lot about me in my best-selling book The Accidental Gangster.

Q: Your book The Accidental Gangster is world acclaimed. Rumor is you’re looking to turn your story into a film.

What can you tell us? a: Well, it’s now being made into a Hollywood movie, and the script was written by George Gallo and Andrew Roger Carson. It’ll be directed by Gallo, who did Midnight Run with De Niro and Grodin, Middlemen, The Comeback Trail, 29th Street and so many more. Stay tuned, we hope to be in production in the first quarter of 2026.

the attention of the legendary production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

Landing at Philadelphia International Records the following year gave the group a new creative backing as strong as the label’s commercial support, and the iconic album Back Stabbers made their biggest break of all. The soul of the band (pun unintended) was immediately recognizable and matched with a new thematic scope. The super funky opener When the World’s at Peace set their sights wider than ever, quickly followed by the snappy disco title track about needing to watch out and protect yourself.

Gamble and Huff wrote the material to play to the O’Jays’ strengths, spinning a few more love-themed tunes about different kinds of relationships: some contented, some falling apart, one definitely on the sinful side, though based around an emotional center.

Wisely, they arranged the LP’s ups and downs in a satisfying arc. Side two slides toward the finish with Sunshine, a string ballad as pure and sweet as anything in their career. Then, for the finale, it’s time to bring that light to the world.

Love Train sums up their big-world togetherness theme in bright technicolor.

Once Gamble started riffing on the idea, he apparently turned out the words in a matter of minutes, and everyone knew they had a hit as soon as it was down on tape.

The beat chugs along like the title train ready to drive straight up into the clouds.

The harmonies are a charming lift for the heart. The chorus is instantly catchy, perfect for singing like nobody’s listening. The sparkling new Philly soul recipe provides the perfect dash of funkitude to let them step lively and (ahem) “let it roooooolllll!”

Where Back Stabbers topped the R&B chart, Love Train hit No. 1 on the overall Billboard 100 and turned out to be the biggest smash of the group’s nearly sixdecade career. That’s not to diminish the goodheartedness that remained an O’Jays trademark; they have always remained a band with a social conscience and used that visibility to keep sharing more important sentiments, too. In 1973, they had another hit with the biting but thankfully not preachy For Love of Money. Later years brought the rousing call of Stand Up, not to mention the worldly musings of We’re All in This Thing Together and Rich Get Richer. (My, my, how things change.)

Still, despite the infectiousness of their hits about money and betrayal, the uplifting Love Train is the one that tops them all. Nobody could have planned that, but they could hardly ask for a nicer illustration of the theme itself. Although every decade ends up developing its own flavor of crazy, the message to keep praying for some sunshine never gets old. PRH

s the man once said, “It was the best of times and the worst of times.” The 1960s had been a whirlwind of unrest and revolution in any number of ways, and as the next decade blew in, the world was not getting any less crazy. There was a continuous string of wild happenings and scandals – celebrities flaming out, divorcing or dying young, political upheavals, police violence on college campuses, a president engaging in crimes to cover up even bigger crimes. (My, my, how things change.)

Since the wider world was always seeping into everyone’s consciousness, of course those big thoughts would keep coming out in all forms of art, too. Television began to deal with real-world issues much more directly than before, with the metaphorical likes of Star Trek leading to the blunt topical complexity of All in the Family, followed by the M*A*S*H novel turned film turned TV series providing a personal look at the global trauma of Vietnam. The folkies and hippies behind so many ‘60s protest songs were giving way to loud rockers and angry punks.

All right, maybe the O’Jays were a bit too colorful to completely dive into the deep end of darkness and drama.

Still, any musical niche is a chance to offer a message, and even the weighty stuff can go down smoothly with some catchy beats and dance steps. By this turn of the decade, the trio had been around long enough to reach visibility on a national scale and felt like they had a few wide-scale ideas to match.

If a group can survive 14 years in the figurative trenches, surely, they’ve earned a place to shine. Friends from the age of eight, Walter Williams and Eddie Levert had been making music even longer than that. Between having parents in the church choir and informally singing in school rooms and street corners, the two were already primed for the troubadour’s life when three friends joined them to form The Triumphs (although the lineup would have their share of changes, too).

Soon they became the Mascots, but after some time under the wing of Cleveland disc jockey Eddie O’Jay, they decided it would be a nice tribute to their mentor to try a new name. Like most gangs in classy suits, they could pack a dance floor while singing about happy hearts or broken ones alike. The album Super Bad, released in 1971, came with a sharp piece called Peace slotted in the middle. Sandwiched among more love songs, this topic didn’t feel out of place. While lamenting the violence in the world – that familiar hippie sentiment set to some fast-flying gospel – they still stuck to that central theme, enthusing that “where there is love, there is peace.”

Families can gather to watch a story unfold. Start a new family or holiday tradition. Here are my picks for the holiday season:

Chess The 1988 musical is back with a new book but the same music

by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA and EGOT winner Tim Rice (Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar). The show focuses on two of the greatest chess players in the world competing for something beyond victory; the woman between them is caught in a high stakes battle of desire and devotion.

With three powerhouse voices, Tony winner Aaron Tveit, Lea Michele (Glee) and Nicholas Christopher (Sweeney Todd), this cult classic comes back for a new generation of musical lovers. (Open run, New York, Imperial Theater)

Ragtime The next revival that is gracing the stage this season is set in the early 20th century and tells the story of three groups of Americans: Black Americans, upper-middle-class Americans and Eastern European immigrants, while incorporating historical figures along the way.

Ragtime is a sweeping musical with a lush score and riveting book that celebrates the American dream that

our country was founded on. Starring Tony nominee Joshua Henry (Into the Woods, Carousel), Olivier and Grammy nominee Caissie Levy (Hair, Frozen) and Tony winner Brandon Uranowitz (Leopoldstadt, LCT’s Falsettos), Ragtime weaves fictional narratives with real historical figures and events, creating a rich tapestry that blurs the line between personal struggle and national identity, making history feel both intimate and epic.

Operation Mincemeat Based on a real life successful 1943 British deception operation to disguise the Allied invasion of Sicily during World War II, Operation Mincemeat is a musical comedy that was nominated for four Tony Awards including best new musical. Liberation The 1970s were a time of love and rebellion. In a basement in Ohio, six women meet to change their lives and the world until it all falls apart. Years later, one of the women’s daughters finds out what went wrong. A new world premiere play about sisterhood and the real meaning of liberation. T

he day began like a typical South Philly Sunday. The smell of simmering gravy and fried meatballs filled the house as I watched the Eagles Pregame Live. That’s when Michael Barkann announced the passing of Flyers icon Bernie Parent.

As tears filled my eyes, I recalled the first time I met Bernie. It was April 1974. The entire City of Philadelphia was consumed with Flyermania. The Broad Street Bullies, that colorful cast of Canadian brawlers had captured the hearts and minds of the city. During that rough-and-tumble NHL season, they announced to North America that Philadelphia was no longer a dumpster fire of professional sports. That band of brothers, coached

by Freddie “The Fog” Shero and led by Bobby Clarke and Bernie Parent, featured a colorful cast of characters with nicknames like The Hammer, The Hound, Moose and Big Bird. They bruised and battered the NHL like never before. Truth be told, those guys invented the Brotherly Shove – only they followed it up with a punch to the face.

One day, my lifelong best friend Randy Giancaterino and I skipped school and devised a plan to sneak into a Flyers practice at The Spectrum to get autographs. Five minutes into our caper, we were foiled by an overzealous security guard who discovered us hiding behind the Zamboni. However, he respected our ingenuity and apologized as he escorted us to the ticket office where he said the players would be exiting practice that day.

After waiting about 30 minutes in the lobby, true to his word, the players did indeed start filtering out. We got every player’s autograph that day. Fittingly, the last two to emerge were Bobby Clarke and Bernie Parent. Clarkie signed as he headed to his car and then Bernie came strolling out. He smiled and gave us a big, “Hello boys,” when he saw us. As he signed our books, he asked, “Why aren’t you in school?” I

told him, “We’re sick.” He chuckled and said, in his French accent, “De Flyers fever, eh?” as he laughed and walked out the door to his car. And little did he know, immortality.

A month later, the Flyers captured their first Stanley Cup and history was made. Two million people flooded Broad Street and Center City for their first Stanley Cup parade. On a personal note, I saw my first naked girl as she streaked by me at Broad and Oregon. God, I miss the 70s.

Our beloved Bullies repeated as Stanley Cup Champs in 1975, destroyed the fabled Soviet Union Red Army team and made the Cup Finals again in 1976 before losing to the Canadiens.

Following the Flyers’ success, the other Philly sports franchises woke up from their collective comas and started winning. This culminated with all four of our professional sports franchises competing for their respective championships in 1980. Only the Phillies won it that year, but it was sure one hell of a ride that season.

Over the next 50 years, I’d run into Bernie at various events, and he was always that same smiling, happy guy. The last time I saw him, was about two years ago at a fan signing for a local business. I took my wife Jeannette with me; she wasn’t even alive during the Broad Street Bullies era. I introduced her to Bernie, and he stood up and said, in his still-thick French accent, “Ah, Jeannette, you want to see my rings?” She was instantly smitten by the Bernie charm. She gushed, “I love him,” after he signed her jersey.

On behalf of the entire City of Philadelphia and Delaware Valley, rest in peace Bernie, and thank you. The Broad Street Bullies made my childhood a magical place during those innocent days. Those of us who were lucky enough to be alive back then will never forget it. For the rest of you folks, Ya’ should’ve been there.

Some trips don’t just fill your passport, they stay with you long after you return home. Our intimate catamaran accommodated four couples, a dedicated chef, and our captain. I was able to put huge checkmarks on my bucket list as we sailed through the Society Islands in French Polynesia, including Tahiti and Bora Bora.

We spent a week sailing between islands, living in the middle of the turquoise sea with 360-degree postcard views. Days were filled with snorkeling coral gardens, visiting a pearl farm and a vanilla plantation in Taha’a, floating in quiet lagoons, and ending each evening watching the sunset from the deck. Our chef prepared fresh meals for us, daily, turning every meal into a shared experience that

brought our small group together.

One of the most meaningful moments of the trip was our vow renewal on a remote Bora Bora beach. It was a traditional Polynesian ceremony, complete with live music and dancers, set against the ocean – intimate, emotional, and unforgettable.

After seven nights sailing, we ended the journey with three nights in an overwater bungalow with a private pool and sweeping views of Mount Otemanu. I would travel 24 hours to spend one night in that room again! It was that special.

it is, and you always know where you stand. As a resident, I’ve come to appreciate the good that often gets overlooked. We have a dedicated and passionate fan base, socially conscious people who look out for one another, and an abundance of parks with beautiful landscapes. The schools may have their flaws, but they improve from middle school onward.When faced with the choice of leaving or staying, it’s not as easy as it seems. Philly has a way of getting under your skin, and despite its flaws, it remains my home.

I believe that if you shed the negativity and look at the city with a more positive lens, you’ll see the beauty that’s been there all along. So, for now, Philly remains my home in my mind and in my heart. ’m Philadelphia-born and raised, but I’ve often fantasized about leaving. The crime rate, dirty streets, and unfriendly customer service can be overwhelming. There’s a stigma that follows you into adulthood, especially if you’re from South Philly and Italian. The city can feel claustrophobic, with a smalltown mentality where everyone knows your business. S

eeing something familiar could instantly transport you back in time, and when it does, it creates an avalanche of memories. This is a story that happened a couple of years ago, and with the winter months upon us, I thought it would be a good time to share it with you.

I was walking to meet a friend on an extremely cold day, and when I say it’s cold, you better believe it’s freezing. Suddenly, three young teenage girls walked past me, and I was shocked at what I saw. They were all dressed in very thin clothes but one of them really stood out to me. She was wearing a cropped short-sleeve T-shirt and lightweight pants, no jacket! It seemed as if she was taking a stroll on a hot summer day. Apparently, the bitter cold and wind did not bother her at all. I had to take a second look to make sure it wasn’t an optical illusion. I thought to myself, that girl must be insane!

As I continued my walk, I had a flashback. I was once that crazy girl. How could I forget?

It’s funny to witness history repeating itself – especially when you’re the history.

As teenagers, we went out in all kinds of weather. Being stuck in the house was out of the question. God help anyone or anything who dared to stop us from having fun. We walked day and night and never got tired. We especially loved walking through the neighborhoods during

the Christmas season, admiring all the lights and decorations. I still enjoy doing that.

Our style was low hipster pants and midriff tops. If we wore a jacket at all, it was very skimpy. The only requirement was that it had to be cute.

I can honestly say I never owned anything close to a sensible coat. We wouldn’t be caught dead with an umbrella; we were way too cool for that.

We would either find shelter until the rain stopped or get drenched. Whatever obstacle came our way, going home was never a thought in our empty heads.

Time sure changes us, and thank God it does. We had to be saved from ourselves. This kind of foolishness is reserved for the young, and that’s exactly where it belongs. I still love walking in the cold weather, and since I’ve acquired some common sense over the years, I wear a warm jacket, hat, scarf and gloves. It’s November and I haven’t moved on from sweaters, so I guess I haven’t gone full circle yet. It’s fun to see young girls wearing clothes like the styles I wore in the seventies. After all, isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery? But I want them to know that it all started with us. We wore it first, and we wore it best.

What if a dusty cardboard box could change the way you see yourself? For Richard Leto, that box – tucked away in his parents’ South Philadelphia basement – became a treasure chest of identity. Inside were faded photographs, immigration papers, obituaries and random items collected for more than 100 years. By weaving keepsakes into narrative, he shows how ordinary objects – a pay stub, a church bulletin, a recipe card – illuminate the larger immigrant experience and the resilience behind it. Ingredients of storytelling evolved, carried by the aroma of Grandmom’s Sunday gravy.

Those artifacts inspired his debut memoir, My Italian‑American Roots.

Leto grew up in South Philly’s rowhomes, where front steps doubled as gathering places and kitchens became cultural classrooms.

The book also celebrates the detective work of genealogy. Long before Ancestry.com, Leto spent hours at the National Archives and records offices in Philadelphia, scrolling through microfilm to piece together his grandparents’ voyage from Calabria and Puglia.

Rediscovering those documents decades later rekindled his passion and pushed him to organize the “time capsule” into a memoir.

Available exclusively online, the book reflects not only his heritage but also his enduring spirit to preserve it.

Q: What inspired you to turn a box of family artifacts into a book? a: Those items weren’t just keepsakes; they were a roadmap of my grandparents’ lives. Organizing them let me tell our family story through everyday objects.

Q: How does South Philly

shape your storytelling family memoir? a: The neighborhood is the heartbeat. Front rowhome steps, kitchens and parish halls were the settings of my childhood. I graduated from St. Monica’s and Bishop Neumann High School, [now called Saints John Neuman and Maria Goretti Catholic High School] in 1976, and I have been an active member of Italian American organizations, discovering how community traditions anchor identity.

Q: What message do you hope younger readers take away? a: Family history matters. Even small artifacts, a recipe card or photo, can connect you to your roots and remind you who you are.

Social media has connected me to family links across the globe.

I hope that readers feel inspired to begin their own search. My book’s message is a call-to- action: preserve the small things, because they tell the biggest stories. PRH

s I sat by my home office window, I saw a deer – a fawn – lying in the clearing. Suddenly, the fawn’s mother appeared and nudged it to get up and return to the woods. The fawn wasn’t bothering anyone or anything, but the deer, which appeared to be its

mother, coaxed the fawn to leave.

It seemed the clearing where it lay made the fawn vulnerable to the elements, whether it was humans, traffic or just the weather. The adult deer didn’t think it was safe for the fawn. I thought to myself: There is a mother doing her job.

How many times have our mothers and fathers done their jobs? How many times have we, as mothers and fathers, done our jobs without a second thought?

Probably too many to count. We do it unconditionally, without even thinking about it. That is reality and being real is the love we show toward the persons we protect. This simple act makes the protector a hero. It is said that we

imitate our parents. If we are put in the same position they were put into, we will do exactly the same thing. And we do. We say things like, “That’s how I was raised,” because that’s how we were raised.

I remember a time when my dad was in business with someone. Mom and Dad took every cent they had and put it into this business. I overheard this man say, “This’ll never work. I went into business with someone who is unsuccessful.” My brother John got all our money we had saved up – $43.24 – and gave it to Mom and Dad. He said, “Dad, here. This will show him that you are successful!” With tears in his eyes, he looked at Johnny and me and said, “Louis, you and Johnny are our success.” PRH January /February /March 2026

hristmas is a wonderful holiday. As I grew up, I saw this proven year after year in our loving Italian American family.

The most important part was the religious aspect of Christmas, when we celebrated the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by attending Mass and receiving Holy Communion. Our little church, Our Lady of Loreto, at 62nd and

Upon entering on Christmas Day, you could feel the warmth and love that permeated the small sanctuary.

Our home was also full of decorations, the artistry provided by our mother. In addition to the typical wreaths, garland and holly, Mom displayed her own creativity in many different ways. Every year she would take out a tube of her favorite lipstick and write “Happy Birthday Baby Jesus” on the large wall mirror in our living room. She would do the same in our large picture window at the front of the house. Mom would also decorate our inside wrought iron stairway with red and green ribbon that attached about 50 white Styrofoam bells.

Each year it was my job to put up the outside lights, which I did with my best buddy. We didn’t have to do a very large area, since our row house was only about 20 feet wide. Much of our time was spent untangling the wires that we “neatly” stored from the year before and picking up the broken multicolored light bulbs that crashed to

the pavement when we dropped them.

Eventually, the job was done, and it was time for Mom to whip up a batch of hot chocolate for her hard-working boys who were always chilled to the bone. As I look back, it seems that winter was always colder back then.

Oh yes, and then there was the food.

Each Christmas Eve, we dutifully celebrated the Festa dei sette pesci or Feast of the Seven Fishes. Mom would work for days in preparation and usually my efforts to raid the kitchen, for a little pregame quality control work, were thwarted. A typical Christmas Eve meal would consist of: • Spaghetti with white clam sauce • Spaghetti with olive oil, garlic & anchovies (in Italian, la alice, pronounced ah-lee-chi) • Fried smelts • Baccala (salted cod) • Fried shrimp • Fried flounder • Stuffed calamari (squid) in marinara sauce Mom was great with numbers. She could beat me in speed addition with ease, but she had a little trouble with the number seven. Many times, the seven fishes became eight or nine.

My favorites were stuffed calamari and spaghetti with anchovies. If I close my eyes, I can still smell the aroma imprinted in my mind.

It’s important to note the Christmas Eve meal was usually attended by just immediate family. The get-together with the extended family happened late Christmas afternoon and evening after the gifts were opened and the 1 p.m. Christmas meal was enjoyed.

This meal would usually consist of either ravioli or stuffed shells. Of course, crusty Italian bread, meatballs, sausage and pork would be served after the pasta. Escarole (scarola) soup, now called Italian wedding soup with little meatballs, would precede the main course and the salad was always served last. The meal was topped off with fresh biscotti, cookies or one of Mom’s signature creations, like pineapple upside-down cake.

The Christmas evening get-together occurred at Grand-Pop’s house on Moore Street in South Philly. Here, all the brothers and the only sister, along with their spouses and kids, would gather for more desserts, some homemade wine, nuts of all kinds and some hotly contested card games.

When my cousins and I were little kids, we would have a ball running around the spacious living room and playing with some of the new toys we brought with us. When we became 12 years old, we were permitted to have a little of Grand-Pop’s home-

made wine. It was a coming of age.

The period of time between Christmas and New Year’s was spent visiting the homes of my aunts and uncles.

All my aunts were great bakers and made their own favorite cookies for everyone to enjoy. It simply was not possible to enter one of their homes and not eat. It would be an insult – not that I needed any convincing.

One regret I have is that many of the recipes for these great pastries were never written down, existing only in the heads of these wonderful women and ending up in heaven with my mother and aunts. It’s a good thing that angels and saints don’t have to worry about gaining weight.

Christmas is still a wonderful holiday, all right, but it will never be like it was back in the old days. That was a magical time, full of tradition and people we loved. I choose not to lament over the loss of those times, but instead to enjoy our new family traditions and regard the old Christmases as a yearly blessing, given to all of us in honor of the birth of the One we love most of all.

am writing to share a reflection on the profound influence of motherhood, inspired by the life lessons imparted by my mother, Mrs. Gloria Lee Woodard. Growing up in a modest rowhome at 912 South 19th Street in South Philadelphia, I witnessed the remarkable strength and unwavering love of a woman who birthed 10 children into this world. As I navigate adulthood, I find myself increasingly grateful for the nurturing lessons she instilled in my life, often without the need for words.

My mother embodied tenderness, a quality that served as an invaluable tool for understanding the essence of life. This gentle approach allowed her to teach us the importance of love, both for ourselves and for our neighbors. Each day, I reflect on the question of who I have become, and in doing so, I realize the immense role my mother played in shaping my identity.

Every individual carries within them a wealth of subconscious knowledge, and my mother had a unique ability to bring that knowledge to the forefront. She taught me that the act of giving is enriched when it comes from

a place of genuine love. Far from being just a day on the calendar, Mother’s Day is a daily celebration of her spirit, a reminder that the power of motherhood transcends time and space.

Just as Earth receives energy from the sun, the ultimate mother within our solar system, we too are fed by the love of our mothers.

This interconnectedness highlights the vital role of motherhood in our lives. Each mother contributes to the fabric of our existence, nurturing not just their children but the entire human family.

I would also like to extend my love and gratitude to my children’s grandmother, Ms. Elaine Sanchez, another embodiment of maternal strength. To love and desire love is a fundamental aspect of existence, a science that mothers naturally cultivate through their care.

Let us celebrate the value of motherhood and the lessons that echo throughout the universe as we embrace our daily lives. Life is indeed a song worth singing, and it is our duty to learn and express that melody. Remember, never overdo what is already done.

ew Year. New couch. That’s Dawn’s current situation.

She and husband Mike are ready to make the switch.

He wants me to pick a new couch, she tells me.

Says we need more seating. The one we have is as big as a shipyard!

It fits 6 people at a time - good for watching TV. But don’t try to lay down.

The bars.

The console.

The recliner wiring.

You want me to pick the perfect couch. Really? Like that’s an easy job, I told him.

It has to be high enough to rest your head. Wide enough to support your body.

You want to sit up. Or lay down.

In one easy transition. No climbing over consoles or falling through big gaps between seats. And God forbid you drop the remote! You have to

call 6 friends to move it – one per seat of the sectional. And 2 more to tell Siri to turn on the flashlight.

I’ll be expiring before the warranty on this one, she points out. A disturbing thought I’m trying to ignore.

I’ve lived long enough to know better, she tells husband Mike.

You want me to pick out the next couch. And for the rest of my life, listen to you tell me about my bad choice. Do I look nuts to you?

I’ve been hearing about this ridiculous sectional for 10 years & I didn’t even pick it out, she says, pointing to the current couch. Remember?

You two morons [father & son] were flipping & flopping all around it on the showroom floor. ‘Look! Plug your cellphone here. Put your cups here! Reclines on both ends! Plenty of room in the captain’s seat!’

You were right about the cupholders, she keeps going. You can rest your cup but not your body. You have to curve your weary self into the shape of a C to lay down. And make sure you pick the right spot to

rest your spine between the metal bars or you’ll need hip replacement.

I agree. Like most beloved couches, it’s taken a beating over the past several years. Kids, their kids, cats, dogs, friends, family, neighbors. Super Bowls. World Series.

We stuffed it, replaced motors, receptacles, recliner parts. We’ve relaxed, revived and resolved both family and world issues on the seats of that old sectional.

The couch you can’t sleep on has seen more than its fair share of nappers and strappers through the years. Those handy dandy recliners came in handy on long days and longer nights of mania, mayhem and social distancing.

It remained steadfast through graduations, weddings, Christmas Eves and New Year Days. We’ve scrubbed, dubbed and blotted coffee, magic markers, wine and Windex.

If there’s a replacement couch in the future, it has some big shoes to fill.
