e are truly grateful for each of you. Your generosity ensures the future of our now almost 125-year-old organization through your support of our awards program, which now funds more than $1 million annually in awards and grants to your fellow members, students on campuses with Phi Kappa Phi chapters, and an innovative college or university, with or without a chapter, that exemplifies the highest ideals of our Society. In the pages that follow, we invite you to meet some of the remarkable award recipients whose love of learning encouraged them to apply for an award. Their drive to succeed highlights the Society’s focus on excellence. We want to make you aware of an action taken by the Foundation Board of Trustees and the Society Board of Directors last fall. In the process of clarifying the relationship between the two entities, the boards determined that the interests of the organization going forward would best be served by consolidating into one entity, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. This procedural change assures a stronger, more agile organization, while providing both cost savings and efficiencies. It is appropriate that the Annual Report comes out each year in spring, when the earth renews and fresh growth follows. This spring in particular, as we look to a post-COVID-19 future, we reflect on Robert Lewis Stevenson’s sage advice, Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant. Thank you for your partnership in our stewardship of the future. Never underestimate the difference your gifts to the Society make. They truly are seeds that will spread the love of learning far and wide. With deep gratitude,

E X C E L ( L E N C E ) 2020 was a big year for the Phi Kappa Phi Forum magazine, taking home four national awards. The Society’s signature publication was honored by Association Media & Publishing during the association’s 40th annual EXCEL Awards Gala. The Society garnered a bronze award in the JournalsGeneral Excellence category for its 2019 spring, summer and fall issues. Those issues also received a silver award in the Journals-Design Excellence category. In addition, the magazine received a gold award in the Journals-Feature Article category for “Uncle

Schultz’s feature also received AM&P’s highest honor, an EXTRA! Award. The EXTRA! Award is chosen from among all the year’s EXCEL award recipients to recognize winning entries that took bold chances and successfully innovated an association media product. The Forum was the only magazine to secure an EXTRA! Award for 2020.
L I T E R A C Y: THE STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER PROJECT Dr. Liberatus J. Rwebugisa, of the University of Nevada, Reno, leads The Student Success Center Project: Helping Every Child Succeed Educationally, a project that fosters student success in rural northwest Tanzania. The purpose of the project, which received Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grants in both 2019 and 2020, is to help primary school students build and sustain strong academic skills in language, math and science through access to free books and tutoring/mentoring. To begin the tutoring portion of the program, volunteers worked with small groups of students over the course of several months. While pre-test scores showed a 31% passing rate among students, a follow-up test showed a drastic improvement with a 98% passing rate. Fueled by these impressive results, Dr. Rwebugisa expanded the project to include a wider range of grade levels with older students returning to tutor younger ones. The grants also helped fund the purchase of 125 books and provided supplies needed to renovate the school building and library. More than 70 volunteers, including community members and students, worked on the construction and renovation. Dr. Rwebugisa's project report to Phi Kappa Phi states, "We believe that talent is universal, but opportunity is not." Phi Kappa Phi is proud to support this project and many more to increase literacy opportunities and initiatives inspired by our members.
ACT OF EXCELLENCE Each biennium, the Society recognizes three members who demonstrate society ideals through the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar, Phi Kappa Phi Artist and Phi Kappa Phi Ray Sylvester Distinguished Service Awards. The recipients for 2020-2022 are:
DR. JOHN R. VILE, dean of the
Honors College at Middle Tennessee State University, was named the 2020-2022 Phi Kappa Phi Scholar. Dr. Vile received the award for his excellence in teaching, research and public service. Through his more than 40-year career, Dr. Vile has contributed broadly to governmental, political, and historical literature through authoring more than 25 books, editing or co-editing 15 books, and numerous chapters and peer-reviewed publications.
DR. LISA A. FUSILLO, professor at the University of Georgia, was named the 2020-2022 Phi Kappa Phi Artist. Dr. Fusillo’s career as a performing artist and scholar spans more than four decades. During this time Dr. Fusillo's contribution to the dance community includes a combination of teaching, scholarly research, creative research, service and administrative roles. She maintains a highly regarded reputation in the dance arena both in the United States and internationally in Europe and Asia for her scholarly work as well as her creative practice in choreography.
TIM FLAKOLL, provost at Tri-College University, was named the 2020-2022 recipient of the Phi Kappa Phi Ray Sylvester Distinguished Service Award. As an individual who has offered sustained professional and community service across his lifetime, Flakoll has been engaged in a wide range of both academic and community activities.

n 2013, Dr. Araceli Martinez Ortiz, an engineering education researcher, launched the NASA Future Aerospace-Engineers and Mathematicians Academy to serve economically disadvantaged and historically underrepresented student populations by engaging them in relevant science, technology, engineering and math experiences with a focus on NASA contexts. As a hallmark program of the LBJ Institute for STEM Education and Research at Texas State University, the FAMA program has grown from a pilot project that served 20 students in one community to a NASA-funded program that has served and enriched STEM experiences for more than 5,600 students in four school districts. The success and mission of the FAMA program is why Phi Kappa Phi named Texas State University as its Excellence in Innovation recipient in May 2020. The $100,000 prize is awarded to an institution biennially for its achievements in finding powerful solutions to important challenges through innovation in higher education. “Phi Kappa Phi is proud to recognize Texas State University for its highly innovative project

in STEM education and bilingual community outreach,” Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd said. “The jury was impressed with the comprehensive nature of FAMA and its mission to underserved students, a fine example of the creative and groundbreaking programming our Excellence in Innovation Award was designed to honor and uplift.” Over the past seven years, the FAMA project has expanded to include four main programs: STEM Saturday and Summer Camps, the NASA Backpack Program, Technology-Rich Environments and Experiences and Bilingual Family Community Outreach. “I am truly humbled to receive this recognition from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Our innovative and wonderful program – the Future Aerospace-Engineering and Mathematics Academy – has brought important changes to our local community. Participating school district leaders, along with our longtime partner, the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, have been steadfast in their support and encouragement of STEM learning for all students,” Dr. Ortiz said.

my Dennis says that Phi Kappa Phi “is the place for me.” For Dennis, a formerly homeless high school dropout, that sense of belonging is especially sweet. Her path from displacement to distinction as a 2020 initiate into the Society has been different than that of most members. It’s given her special insights in promoting the Society’s ideal of learning and service to others. By the time Dennis joined Phi Kappa Phi last year, she’d completed several degrees and earned kudos as a public librarian. “My past has given me a vantage point that is uncommon among professionals, and it’s one that I now cherish and see for the tool it has become,” said Dennis. Born in Denver, Colorado, Dennis had a troubled childhood in Texas. “I grew up in abject poverty and tremendous violence,” said Dennis. “For a long time, I figured I would be better on my own, and one day acted on those thoughts. I dropped out of high school and became homeless the same day, about a week after I turned 17. I wasn’t a horrible student growing up, but the classroom was not for me.” Dennis now has a bachelor's degree in history and master's degrees in English, student development and leadership, and library science. She’s been working on another graduate degree in communications and media marketing. But her road to renewal wasn’t easy. She was homeless about 18 months. “I couch-surfed when I could and broke into car wash coin-ops to make sure I at least had a taco and a pack of smokes every night,” Dennis said. “A friend of a friend eventually took me in long enough for me to get my GED completed so I could get a job. “After living and working in Portland, Oregon for a couple of years, I straightened up and started a family,” Dennis said. “We barely made the bills on our single-

earner income, and in considering what I could do to redirect our family future, I decided to try college. I was 25 or so at the time, first generation, from a family that was suspicious toward higher ed, and I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up.” The Women’s Center at Portland Community College helped Dennis navigate her first year. On-campus child care allowed her to take classes while tending her infant and toddler. “My inexperienced self signed up for 15 hours that first summer semester, which included meteorology, and I passed every class! That was almost all it took to get the fire going,” Dennis recalled. As the programming and public relations librarian for the Tom Green County Library System in San Angelo, Texas, Dennis focuses on underserved residents. “I can relate to a larger portion of the underserved patrons we see at the public library because I have been where many of them are,” Dennis said. “I know what it’s like to be hurt, scared, confused, alone, and need help.” Every day, Phi Kappa Phi’s founding principles inform her work. “Our group embodies the spirit of lifelong learning and the thirst for knowledge that drives almost every aspect of my life,” Dennis said. “It is the place for me.”

ince the naming of the first class of Phi Kappa Phi Fellows in 1933, the Society’s awards program has continued to grow into one of the most prestigious distinctions of Phi Kappa Phi. In 2020 the Society reached a milestone of awarding $1 million annually with the addition of the Graduate Research Grant. “Only eight years ago, we celebrated reaching the milestone of $1 million for a biennium,” Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd said. The Society introduced the grant in 2018 as a pilot program to assess the needs for the financial support of graduate research. The response proved there was a real need for funding that enabled graduate students to conduct research and present their work. The increased funding in 2021 will provide up to $1,500 to 20 eligible members enrolled in a graduate program. These grants provide funding for research in support of degree completion. “When asked what makes Phi Kappa Phi distinctive among our peer prestigious honor societies, we are quick to respond, ‘Awards are what we do,'" Dr. Todd explained. “Regular review of our various awards often leads to recommendations for new awards, such as the Graduate Research Grant. We were thrilled in 2020 that an increase in funds available for awards allowed us not only to create a new award but to surpass a million dollars in annual award funding.” From study abroad grants, graduate fellowships,

funding for postbaccalaureate development, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives, the Society has helped pave the way for members to focus on their academic and professional successes. The addition of the Graduate Research Grant only broadens that opportunity. Past recipients conducted and presented research on initiatives to improve public education in rural Tanzania; the connection between spirituality, sustainability, and happiness; enhanced oil recovery processes in Norway and more. “I am very grateful to Phi Kappa Phi for awarding me the Graduate Research Grant,” said 2021 grant recipient Nikhil Tiwari, who is conducting research on the language and literacy experiences in Asian Indian American youth in U.S. schools. “It shows the Society’s strong valuing of and commitment to the spotlighting of work that centers the voices of individuals from minoritized communities.”

TRADITION
RISING STAR
For 19 years, the Southeastern Louisiana University chapter has hosted its annual Phi Kappa Phi Homecoming Intramural Quiz Bowl for faculty and students. Originally organized to offer “another kind of competition” during Homecoming week, the fast-action, in-person event faced the obstacle of keeping the tradition alive despite COVID-19 times. The answer was to go virtual, and that they did! Former chapter president Dr. Joan Faust launched the event in 2002, and after her retirement in 2020, she passed the baton to Dr. Claire Procopio, communications professor and director of the university’s honors program. “She has the organizational skills, enthusiasm, and commitment that will keep this event popular and successful, while making her own innovations,” Dr. Faust said. With four student teams and three faculty teams competing for first place in their bracket, Dr. Procopio took the varsity sport of the mind to Zoom. “After figuring out how it could work, it was just a matter of teaching the team captains the system and letting them show their teammates. Phi Kappa Phi members and quiz bowl players tend to be pretty quick studies, so they picked it up in no time,” Dr. Procopio said. When asked if she ever imagined the Quiz Bowl being such a staple event for the chapter and university 19 years later, Dr. Faust said, “I was determined to make this event a success as long as we had interest from participants, and we haven't lagged yet. But for 20 years? I suppose I had not expected it would still be going strong. I'm delighted.” The event was declared a success by both contestants and observers, thus keeping the tradition alive to inspire the love of learning through friendly competition.
Not every collegiate journey follows a traditional path straight from high school to higher education, and even those that do may encounter struggles along the way. For Skyler Pretto, it took 12 years after dropping out of high school to start his journey to success. His desire for learning combined with the hopes of broadening his career possibilities were the driving force behind the decision to work toward his GED. “If there is anything I would tell myself in high school, it would probably be that life does not get any easier when one chooses to not pursue a better education for themselves, a better life, a better career path,” he shared. Now an electrical engineering student at Florida Institute of Technology, the goal of graduation is right around the corner. To his fellow students, he urges them not to worry about their pace or compare themselves to others. “Their desire to learn—their willingness to challenge themselves—is what will drive their success, not just scholastically, but in life,” Pretto said. Earning an invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi has been a highlight of his return to school. He said, “This is the greatest scholastic achievement of my life, thus proving that it is never too late to get a better education.”
WE ASKED OUR 2020 INITIATES: WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE REASONS YOU JOINED PHI KAPPA PHI? Lily Charles, Florida International University “I joined Phi Kappa Phi to open more doors to opportunities for scholarship and networking as I finish my doctoral degree at Florida International University and begin my career as a physical therapist!”
