Abbie Darnell Fund The Abbie Darnell Fund was added to the Foundation’s fund list in 2010. Donors Ted and Kim Day had learned about a new technology that could make significant improvements in patients who had foot drop problems, suffered a stroke, had cerebral palsy or other neurological problems. Their decision to provide the seed money has now helped many people obtain the Bioness unit, allowing them to lead more independent lives.

The fund also pays for the training of our RehabCare staff on the use of the Bioness equipment.

Your donations at work... Abbie Darnell was first featured in our Winter 2010 magazine. She was 15 years old and had just started using the Bioness unit after relying on leg braces for most of her life. Today, she is an independent, active, involved college sophomore - excited about all the possibilities ahead of her.

What is Bioness Therapy? Bioness is committed to helping people become more independent through clinically-proven products. They offer advanced technology devices designed to provide functional and therapeutic benefits for individuals afflicted with neurological diseases and disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, or spinal cord injuries.

Stacey was born with arteriovenous malformation, a condition that effects the connection between her veins and arteries. The condition caused paralysis in her right leg and she was unable to walk without extreme physical exertion. Now, thanks to Bioness, Stacey is able to walk much better. “I feel like I can walk for hours now, and my knees and hips don’t hurt. It really does work, and it really does change lives.” - Stacey Goins Stacey Goins using the Bioness therapy.

Lactation Support The Baby Steps Fund assists mothers with necessary resources to successfully breastfeed their infants. PCRMC’s Lactation Center provides knowledgeable and trained support, as well as breast pumps and supplies to make breastfeeding a success for mothers and babies. Providing breast pumps to mothers who would like to continue to breastfeed benefits the mother, baby and her employer. Your support assists breastfeeding mothers who are returning to work or school. With assistance, breastfeeding mothers are shown to have less days missed, reduced health care costs, and improved productivity in the workplace.

Forever My Child Program

Forever My Child is designed to support patients who are coping with the pain of fetal and infant loss. Thanks to your donations, we are able to provide families with tangible reminders of their precious baby--such as photos, handprints and footprints, as well as other special items. PCRMC is fortunate to have a dedicated fetal demise team that compassionately provides this service to help patients and families and promote healing.

One Patient’s Journey...

A young mothers story in particular demonstrates the way your donations have touched so many lives in need. Several life-altering events happened to her in a very short time. She had a sister die of breast cancer who was very young; her husband lost his job and with that his family’s income and insurance, and she had young children at home to care for with limited financial resources. Imagine the fear that she felt when she discovered a lump and had no financial means to get the testing she needed. As mothers often do, they put off doing things for themselves in order to make sure their families are taken care of. She was so grateful and relieved to find out about the Foundation and how they could provide this screening for her! Thanks to the generous gifts of so many, this young wife and mother was able to receive this possibly lifesaving exam.

“I believe mammograms are very important for all women. A mammogram saved my life.”

Progress as Promised • Our Nurse Navigator assists our cancer patients with “navigating” the confusing road of a cancer diagnosis. She’s there to provide compassionate direction from pre-diagnosis all the way through to our survivorship program. • Our Genetics Counselor sees patients with a family history or a new diagnosis to assist them in understanding the genetic cancer link for them and their families. This testing leads to awareness and early screenings. • Our Research Nurse works with all physicians, keeping them apprised of any new research therapy available for patients. Our hospital has many new research options available to patients. • Our Nutritionist is available to help cancer patients with nutritional needs during cancer treatments. She screens each new patient and follows them through treatment to help them maintain proper nutrition. • Our Social Worker assesses, understands and helps provide services to meet patient/family psychosocial, spiritual, emotional and economic needs in relation to the impact of illness. “Through the creation of the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI), all cancer treatment services will be offered in a seamless fashion in one location. It is the next step in our commitment to serving the healthcare needs of the communities we serve.” -John Denbo, CEO of PCRMC

Greatest Needs Fund The Greatest Needs Fund allows donors the choice to give “where the need is the greatest.” Unrestricted gifts from these valuable donors show the depth of their confidence in us, allowing us to do wonderful things to advance our mission. PCRMC determines where donations to our Greatest Needs Fund are best directed to help the most people. For example, we have been able to assist with prescription medications, a prosthetic leg for a young teenager, travel assistance to doctors appointments and nutritional supplements, to name a few.

Your donations at work... David has worn a prosthetic leg his entire life. He was born with Proximal Focal Femoral Deficiency (PFFD), which is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by failure of normal development of the proximal femur and hip joint. Without the prosthetic leg, he is unable to walk. With it, he becomes just like any other active boy his age, eager to jump in and try new things. His prosthesis, which had been provided by the Shriners Hospitals for Children, was showing signs of wear and tear from David’s many activities. The discomfort was evident in the way David walked, making him have an obvious limp. Dr. Dana Voight of PCRMC heard about David and worked with the Foundation to get David a new state-of-the-art prosthetic leg from Jim Verhoff & Associates LTD. Once fitted, he could move around comfortably and with ease. Both David and his mother are so grateful to the Foundation and its donors.

“People have been so good to me. This is just a testimony of what people have done for me with their support and love. I have such gratitude for a complete stranger. Out of nowhere someone reaches out and God sends an angel. That is a miracle.” -Theresa Odun-Ayo, David’s mother

Ongoing Accomplishments • Purchased AEDs (automated external defibrillators) for local schools • Authorize patients to receive assistance with co-pays • Assist patients with ECP (External Counter Pulsation) therapy • Provide transportation assistance with rehab services • Sponsor health fairs and lunch-and-learn seminars

Your donations at work... One patient receiving ECP therapy stated she had given up hope; she knew she would not be able to have another bypass or any more stents placed. She suffered from chest pain, depression and was fatigued. When she was approached with the possibility of ECP she was willing to try the treatment, but could not afford it. Through the generosity of the Heart-2-Heart Fund and through her ECP therapy, this patient has a new outlook on life. The patient states she has more energy than before, allowing her to go for walks and enjoy getting out of the house. At the time treatment was over, she had stopped taking her medication and was planning to give back to the community by volunteering at a local senior center.

“They brought the AED, did CPR compressions and then had to shock me. The next thing I know, I open my eyes...” -Tom Brown, recalling how an AED saved him after a heart attack

Randy Potts, with his daughter Rebecca

Randy Potts was one of our many Hospice patients -- a father, grandfather and Army veteran who was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer. Potts received financial assistance from the Hospice Fund, ranging from propane for his home to medication. Upon learning that his cancer was incurable, he chose to help others by not accepting the treatment so the assistance would be available to other cancer patients. Sadly, Potts lost his battle with cancer in 2012, but was grateful for everything Hospice did for him.

Joy of Caring Cancer Fund The first fund of the Foundation was started by Joy Heavin, a local cancer patient. The Joy of Caring Cancer Fund provides financial assistance to patients undergoing cancer treatments who may need extra assistance. Some of the many areas of assistance include prescription medication, food supplements, wigs, mastectomy bras, cancer rehabilitation therapy, lymphedema therapy and general expenses.

Fund Administrator “I was contacted by a social worker who needed assistance for a terminal metastatic breast cancer patient when it was discovered she was not eating well and losing weight. The patient had limited financial resources and after paying her bills, had little money to purchase food or have gas money to get to physician appointments. The Joy of Caring Cancer Fund was able to help with Country Mart gift cards and Mobil gas cards.”

the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund is an accomplishment I’m most proud of.” -Joy Heavin

Joy Heavin Here is how your generosity has helped cancer patients this year… • Medicine for those uninsured or underinsured • Food and gas vouchers • Lymphedema stockings - The physicians give patients dealing with pain and swelling a prescription for a lymphedema stocking. The patient then goes to Hillcrest Pharmacy and is fitted. Through our partnership with Hillcrest, we are billed for the stocking. Those who cannot afford the stocking are helped immediately and with compassion • Dentures, propane, and physical therapy • Thousands of cases of nutritional supplements

In 2014, this fund was used to purchase iPads that allow patients to receive voice-recorded and video discharge instructions in an effort to increase patient understanding and improve health after discharge. Communication boards for each patient room were also purchased. These boards are used throughout the patient's hospital stay to improve patient involvement in care and streamline nursing duties to allow more time to be spent with each patient. This stateof-the-art technology is available to the community because of donations to the Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund.

The DAISY Awards at PCRMC In October 2012, the DAISY Award Program began at PCRMC. The Daisy Award is sponsored by the family of Vicki B. Allen through their philanthropic gift to the Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund at Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation.

“During a time that has been so scary and devastating, April could walk in our room and I knew immediately everything was going to be okay. She is the most compassionate and knowledgeable nurse. PCRMC has found a true gem by having April on their team. We love our April.” -A patient’s words of gratitude to PCRMC DAISY Award recipient, April Konter
