Professional synopsis

I began my architectural career in Ireland in 1999, subsequently starting my university education in Liverpool in 2002. I graduated in 2008 and worked in a number of architect and CAD roles until it became unviable in 2010 due to the economic downturn. I took a role as a customer advisor in United Utilities Water as a opportunity to build my client handling and communications skills. I have recently relocated from Liverpool to London to resume my career in design.

Architecture

My specific interest in architecture lies in its social and economic impact and how our designs can help to improve the urban landscape and benefit communities. Further to gaining job running experience I would especially like to gain more experience in public consultation and master planning.

Personal statement

I am an optimistic and affable individual who enjoys building good relationships with clients, colleagues and other professionals. I have developed excellent persuasion and negotiation skills through my work in the water industry and am happy to go the extra mile to make sure a job is done right.

MASTER PLAN

THESIS PROJECT

M ITROVICA K OSOVO

The nodes on the above city plan show dwellings that were subject to forced ethnic segregation by the UN following their intervention in Kosovo. Serbian nationals living in the south of Mitrovica were forced into the north of the city, Kosovan Albanians were sent to the south.

Completed in 2008 at the time Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, this thesis project was an investigation into how architecture and urban redevelopment could be used to benefit post-war Kosovo. By travelling to Kosovo and interviewing ethnic Serbs, Kosovan Albanians and UN officials, our small team of 3 developed this design to address ethnic tensions within the city of Mitrovica and issues of economic and civic depravation.

These lines of segregation were used as a driver for our design and given a width, depending on their orientation. North to south lines were wider, east/west narrower. The idea behind the project was to literally bridge the divide between north and south, to blur the boundaries of ours versus theirs. As such, giving street/bridge widths based on their orientation, we hoped to make it difficult for local people to readily identify where north and south began. East/west routes were narrow, forcing the users from 2 sides to interact closely.

Where the original lines intersected began to inform our building location. Giving prominence to the common experience of forced displacement shared by both communities.

Sections along the lines of displacement through the city. Information taken for information provided by surveying officers at the UN.

Section were condenced and dropped onto the river to build on the layers of our driver and allow structures to take shape. The orientation and shape of the final building were directly informed by historical events within the city.
