ARCIMBOLDO

THE PORTRAIT OF AN AUDACIOUS MAN 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021 PRESALES What if Giuseppe Arcimboldo was a painter of Modern Art before its time? With their unique style, the Composite Heads by the Milanese painter are among the most famous works from the Renaissance period. Largely forgotten after his death in 1593, he was re-discovered by the Surrealists. After them, throughout the 20th century, numerous Modern and Contemporary artists were inspired by his works. His art was in constant metamorphosis, profoundly audacious, sometimes subversive

and terrifying. It puzzled his contemporaries and continues to intrigue those who see it. The film will be an unexpected dialogue between Arcimboldo’s audacities and inventions on the one hand and a selection of more contemporary works and artists on the other hand. It will provide an opportunity to rediscover this enigmatic 16thcentury artist and explore his legacy. Director(s): Benoit Felici Producer(s): CPB Films

BASQUIAT & AFRICA 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021

PRESALES

This film is first and foremost a journey. From Brooklyn to Abidjan, via the Mississippi, Puerto Rico and Haiti. A journey through the search for his identity of the most famous black American contemporary artist, and one of the 20th century’s major painters. But it’s a paradoxical journey because, despite his Haitian and Puerto Rican roots, Basquiat had practically never explored Africa. Yet, he never stopped dreaming about it, transcending his «cultural memory» to produce iconic works. It isn’t said often enough: although Basquiat, like no other painter before him, anticipated the globalisation of art, above all, he stood up to an America riddled with racism. Using his origins and his convictions like the colours on his palette, the young black man decided to obtain international artistic recognition. But what relationship did this child prodigy have with his African heritage? Beyond the simple legend, this film-journey will take a refreshing look at Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life, stripped of the clichés that get in the way of the political significance of his work. CORRESPONDENCES 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021

NEW

Correspondences are fragments of life, seized in the body of the greater History. They illuminate the interior landscape of an era, through a kaleidoscope of archives and voices: History reveals itself in its most intimate light. For centuries we have written to give news, to exchange ideas, to express love or pain, to tell each other about the world we live in. Letters are the memory of the world, fragments of life seized in the body of the greater History. What does the correspondence of Picasso at the height of creation reveal? That of Renoir seeking the American dream in Hollywood? The answers to the blank pages of History lie at the heart of these letters, in the vitality of such exchanges. Correspondences offer a collection of 26’ documentaries, each of which will incarnate the letters exchanged by two prominent figures of the 20th century. Director(s): Dorothée Lachaud Producer(s): Schuch productions

A large painting by Gustave Courbet can be found at the Orsay Museum in Paris, entitled: A real allegory, the Artist’s studio, completed in 1855. This strange painting represents the painter in the centre, as he is painting a landscape surrounded by his potential models. But who can be seen behind Baudelaire? A slightly blur silhouette, reappearing on the wall like a ghost. It is Jeanne Duval, the poet’s mistress, who has been covered up with a coat of paint.

But who is Jeanne Duval and why was she erased? This film narrates the love story of Jeanne Duval and Charles Baudelaire, an incredibly famous white poet and a black woman whose real name is left unknown. A story which went on their entire life, in the middle of the 19th century. Director(s): Régine Abadia Producer(s): Little big story

THE WORLD WITHIN A PAINTING OR VERMEER’S HAT 75’/52’ | EN/FR | 4K/HD | 2020 NEW

In this documentary film, which is loosely based on the famous book by Canadian writer, Timothy Brook, Vermeer’s Hat, we offer a new way of understanding the global world we live in thanks to… a 17th-century painting. A simple, apparently anecdotal painting, far from being one of the Dutch painter’s most famous, entitled Officer and Laughing Girl painted in 1655. A charming scene in which an officer, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, talks with a young woman who is holding a glass of wine in her hand. The scene is set in one of the household interiors of which Vermeer was so fond.

Charles Burnett is an eminent figure of the ‘‘Black independent movement’’ during the sixties. His dual identity, as Afro-American and independent filmmaker, makes his work rare and valuable, revealing the shortcomings of American society, unequal and divided. A subtle and powerful storyteller, he describes the lives and dreams of Afro-American families, mixing culture and politics in his own unique way. Based on his precious testimony and those from figures of cinema or specialists, the film is a portrait of Charles Burnett, which follows him in his hometown of Los Angeles, but also tells the story of fifty years of American history scarred by the fight for civil rights. It shows how precious his work is for the young generations, as it still resonates today with movements like Black lives matter. Director(s): Pierre-Paul Puljiz Producer(s): Tamara Films

ORSON WELLES

JRR TOLKIEN

LEONARDO DA VINCI

A legendary figure, the living myth of the creative artist, Orson Welles was the man who reinvented the language of theatre and cinema at the age of 24. He was a man of a thousand faces, continually appearing in new forms, revealing endlessly unseen facets. He was a moralist, a humanist, a Don Juan, a glutton, an American and a homeless exile, an actor, a filmmaker, a comedian, a poet, and an eternal child prodigy seeking to return to a state of grace. A child leading us into a maze of mirrors reflecting his talents, that he spins and twists as he pleases, never fully revealing what lies behind his imposing figure. This film is a journey into the heart of the man behind the legend..

Translated to over sixty languages, Tolkien’s books have deeply marked the imagination of millions of readers throughout the world. However, in a period of triumphant Hollywood blockbusters, part of the mystery may be fading away, something that is attached to a unique type of literary creativity. The film goes back to the origins of this tremendous creation and, at the same time, it is an opportunity to (re) discover the surprising personality of its author. Who was this quiet and scholarly man who taught languages and old English literature at Oxford? How was this gigantic project born? Going back and forth between ordinary reality and an immaterial and fabulously rich reality, the story offers to reveal the meaning of Tolkien’s life as a marvelous adventure of the mind.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, this documentary propose to apprehend Leonardo’s art jointly of his technical and scientific research. The engineer and man of science cannot be fully appreciated without taking into account the fact he was first and foremost an artist with an incredible sense of observation and drawing. To decipher the da Vinci mystery, we will embark upon a lengthy journey in da Vinci’s footsteps from the village where he was born to Clos Lucé, his last home, passing through the places he frequented in Florence, Milan… Leonardo’s own writings, drawings, sketches, paintings will answer the various questions raised. We will reveal his vision and perspective, as his own eye guides us, thanks to astonishing visual effects matching those of the best sci-fi films.

Ten years after his death, as we prepare to celebrate the centenary of his birth, this film recounts a single year in Bergman’s life. THE INNER FIRE 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2018 Thirty years after his death, Joan Miró has become an iconic figure in the art world. The more time passes, the more his work becomes universal, going beyond borders and genres. Thanks to the exceptional presence of Joan Punyet Miró, the artist’s grandson and administrator, as well as previously unseen archives and a privileged access to his work and his studio, we shall discover some of the painter’s less familiar facets: the private Miró, who could «by day be a treasure, and by night, a monster»; Miró the provocateur, as well as the Miró who was sensitive to the distress of his compatriots. We shall also evoke the pressures involved in handling such an immense painter’s heritage, a burden which falls on a single descendant, and the tragic fate of most of the members of his family.

MOURAD MERZOUKI DANCE ALCHEMIST 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2019

Hip-hop dance would never have reached the great international stages without Mourad Merzouki. A recognised choreographer, his shows are now touring worldwide, with more than 2800 performances in 58 countries. The film offers an immersion into the heart of his next creation: Vertikal. In the middle of his troupe of dancers and close to Mourad, we participate in the creative process backstage, until the first performance – between doubt and creative impulse. With an objective: to defy gravity and create a visual vertigo. Through Mourad’s confidences and moments stolen from his busy life, we discover his influences, his artistic career and his universe. Thus emerges the portrait of one of the most promising choreographers of his generation.

So you thought you knew Mozart’s Requiem by heart? Wrong! Forget the versions completed by his pupil Süssmayr or others. This is the unfinished work written by Mozart before his untimely death. The interpretation of fragments of the Requiem by circus artist Yoann Bourgeois explores the silences that are part of the unfinished score. On stage, between suspension and disappearance, eight acrobatic dancers give voice to the void left by Mozart’s death. Recorded at La Seine Musicale during the Mozart Maximum Festival accentus

HISTORY’S GREATEST LIES 15x52’ | EN/FR | 4K/HD | 2021 Who are the liars? Heads of state, politicians or military leaders, supported by their hierarchies. They have no qualms about lying to the radio, to television, to millions of people, end even, on oath, to the highest authorities and institutions. They use secret services, military strategy or communications agencies to make their lies more credible. The only motto is: «the bigger the lie, the more it will be believed!» In affairs of state, all and every means can be used to certify or conceal an operation. Lies are not just a matter of words, or of silence. They entail practical acts as well as technical support. Whole teams are sometimes necessary to construct believable illusions. Looking into the start of the eighties in Poland means looking back at a world of communism where there were interminable food queues, where freedom of expression was inexistent and a handful of leaders determined the lives of millions of people in the name of the dictatorship of the proletariat. Being in Gdansk during the summer of 1980, meant observing the CIA, the KGB, the Vatican, and Western chancelleries who were closely watching the shipyards on the Baltic. It meant probing a unique confrontation between two countries and their Allies, between the United States and the USSR, between the West and the East, in which Poland was but a simple pawn. It is through this confrontation that this historical film brings us up to modern times. Effectively, since then, other people, other nations have risen up against their oppressors. THE ART MARKET DURING THE NAZI OCCUPATION 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021

NEW

The art market in France was surprisingly flourishing under the Occupation. Almost two million works of art changed hands between 1940 and 1944. Over 35,000 trains left Paris loaded with artwork and spoliated objects, in particular those belonging to Jewish families. What practices and what networks did those in the art market put in place during this fiveyear period? Who were they? What role did the French national museums play in this market?

The film offers a historical investigation into the massive transfer of artwork organised from Paris. A unique investigation and the fruit of 7 years of work by historian Emmanuelle Polack, which brings together gallery owners, collectors, art dealers, Nazi dignitaries, auctioneers, unscrupulous curators, or simple intermediaries against a background of antisemitic occupation laws. SLAVERY ROUTES 4x52’ | EN/FR | HD/4K | 2018 This is the story of a world whose territories and own frontiers were built by the slave trade. A world where violence, subjugation and profit imposed their routes. The history of slavery did not begin in the cotton fields. It is a much older tragedy, that has been going on since the dawn of humanity. From the VIIth century on, and for over 1,200 years, Africa was the epicenter of a gigantic traffic of human beings traversing the entire globe. Nubian, Fulani, Mandinka, Songhai, Susu, Akan, Yoruba, Igbo, Kongo, Yao, Somali… Over 20 million Africans were deported, sold and enslaved. This criminal system thrived, laying the foundations of empires around the world. Its scale was such that for a long time, it has been impossible to relate it comprehensively. And yet, it raises a fundamental question: how did Africa end up at the heart of the slavery routes?

We’ve all seen the archive images that show German women in a state of euphoria, almost in a trance, crying out the name of Adolf Hitler, «their» Führer. But all German women were not fervent Nazis, far from it …. The story we wish to tell in this documentary is that of the women who had the courage to say no to Nazi ideology, who resisted barbarity in spite of the risks of any opposition to the system. Mothers, labourers, communist activists, socialists or conservatives, nuns, students, they were as diverse as German society itself. Some were part of networks, others worked with their husbands, fiancés or friends. Some even fought against the system alone. The forms of resistance were also multiple: civil disobedience, humanitarian, religious, or political resistance.

THE FIRST LADY OF THE THIRD REICH 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2017

WATCH THE FILM Password: femmes

WOMEN OF THE THIRD REICH 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2018 German women have long been perceived as passive witnesses to the crimes of the Nazi regime. Yet the ideologists of the Third Reich used these women as an essential part of their system. More than 13 million women were cardholding members of the NSDAP, the Nazi party. Reproductive mothers with families, they then contributed to the German war machine, working in factories or volunteering as guards in the death camps. This documentary will shatter the conventional image of these women. Loyal, indoctrinated, ambitious and fanatic, they were an integral part of the regime. Through a historical and psychological investigation, we will attempt a better understanding of their radicalisation and fanatic drift, by unveiling a largely unknown dimension of the Nazi system.

In Adolf Hitler’s bunker in Berlin, bombarded day and night by the Russian army, an elegant woman of around 40 poisons her 6 children before committing suicide. Her name was Magda Goebbels, and she was the wife of the notorious and sinister propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, and the Third Reich’s true First Lady. From this inaugural scene, this documentary, in the form of a psychological thriller, attempts to understand how Magdalena Friedlander became Magda Goebbels. A woman who bore the name of the Jewish step-father who raised her. A woman who married a wealthy automobile magnate with libertarian ideas, before divorcing him, and becoming an emancipated young woman at the height of fashion. For Magda Goebbels is as much a product of history - that of Nazism as of her own tortured psyche. Director(s): Antoine Vitkine Producer(s): CPB Films

THE HEAVY WATER WAR 52’ | EN/FR | 4K/HD | 2019 In 1939 the scientific world is buzzing. Research on the atom is advancing fast and everyone wants to be the first to succeed in uranium fission. Governments closely follow these advances, while international tensions are rising. The race for the atomic bomb is launched. Unlimited funds are injected into scientific research: Hitler attracts the best physicists by giving them financial and human resources hitherto unknown and the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is established in France. But to control nuclear fission, the French and the Germans alike absolutely need heavy water. This rare resource is produced in a single factory in Vemork, a small Norwegian town, which then becomes a major strategic issue. THE UNKNOWN RESISTANCE NETWORK 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2019 This is the story of an unknown maquis. These French resistance fighters were amongst the ones who killed the most Nazis, who never dropped their weapons despite the German raids and military operations against them. On 11 November 1943, Captain Romans-Petit, leader of the Maquis of Ain and Haut-Jura, organised a military parade in Oyonnax to mark the 11th November and to show the Germans the strength and discipline of the Resistance. Historian scholars say today that this symbolic event had a worldwide impact and would change the course of WWII. Until the end of the war, this Resistance network was united in its struggle, despite atrocious atrocities and Nazi barbarity. Director(s): Romain Clément & Yoann Peillex Producer(s): TV Presse

In 1900, the eyes of the whole world were on Paris. Joy and optimism were at a peak in the elegant City of Light. The Exposition Universelle, which opened in April 1900, was an enormous celebration of French success. It welcomed 51 million visitors, half of whom were foreigners. Significant investments had been made to ensure that the Exposition would be a truly extraordinary event. Two splendid exhibition halls, the Petit and Grand Palais, were built for the occasion, along with three railroad stations: Gare d’Orsay, Gare de Lyon, and Gare des Invalides. Paris became a showcase city, displaying the latest technical and scientific inventions, and also boasting avant-garde art galleries, lively cabarets, the ultimate in high fashion, and the Parisiennes. AT THE TIME OF THE CRIME 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2019 In 1963, as the world learned of the assassination of John F. The journalist b ecame the privileged confidant of the distraught statesman, and witness to his precious words: for Castro, the death of the American president signalled “the end of his peace mission”. CAN THE LAW SAVE THE PLANET? 52’/70’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021 PRESALES Our planet is burning and the NGOs seem overwhelmed by the number of catastrophic situations to be managed... As soon as one fire goes out, another one is lit on the other side of the world. While Greenpeace had obtained a moratorium on deforestation in the Amazon, Bolsonaro’s coming to power was enough to undo the long and patient work of the NGO. Now activists of a new kind are planning to file a complaint against the Brazilian dictator, in the name of nature. It is advocates and lawyers taking over; white-collar

rangers whose clients are rivers, forests and wildlife. They militate for nature to be recognised as a legal entity, in order to file a complaint on its behalf and represent them in court. Indeed, they look for all the loopholes in the laws and attack the enemies of nature on their own ground. Director(s): Stenka Quillet and Olivia Mokiejewski Producer(s): TV Presse

This new film goes to the roots of a deepseated issue that is eating away at Canadian democracy. Misery, alcohol, drugs, violence, femicides... The Indians, or First Nations, have been facing a crisis for decades. Considered as second-class citizens, they bear the brunt of the situation’s consequences. A situation that dates from a long time back. Indigenous communities have been treated with contempt since the birth of the Canadian Confederation in the 19th century. They had to «kill off the Indian in them». But for the past ten years, the First Nations have been making a stand. They are asserting their rights and asking for this injustice to be recognised. This film follows the cultural, political, and legal battle of these new avengers of the Indigenous cause. Director(s): Gwenlaouen Le Gouil Producer(s): TV Presse

A.R.T. AND SURROGACY

NEW

Today, a word from a child before the law is not worth much. Everyone shelters from it. Very few people dare to report it. Through the hearings of a juvenile judge and the words of child victims who have become adults, the film recounts the impact of violence that is invisible and unknown to us, adults. It describes the effects of domestic violence on a person’s life course. How can one survive childhood and what kind of adult should one become? Where are the wounds? Young age does not protect against trauma. On the contrary, neuroscience today shows that it is more pathogenic at this age and has consequences. This film gives children a voice (anonymous in the judge’s office, face to face with the camera once they are adults). We can listen to their experiences and feelings and take their opinions into account… As a first step towards a greater respect for their right to be protected. FACING LIFE 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2019 L’Envol is a non-profit organisation which offers young people in difficulty a chance for social reintegration by centring its educational project on artistic activities. This film invites us on an emotional, hopeful journey, during which we meet these young adults who have been hurt by violence within the family, who are victims of a shattered childhood, who have to hang on and not let themselves become isolated. During their childhood, they were humiliated, beaten, sometimes raped. Supervised by the association, each one will go back through his own story, express it, as if to exorcise it before coming to accept it. Mingling immersion with the fourth year group and encounters with previous programme attendees, this film restores hope of redemption. The profiles, energy and charisma of the people we meet bring us the promise of a “feel-good movie”. Director(s): Frédéric Brunnquell Producer(s): CPB Films

In the past, as moral values have changed, documentaries have recorded the words of children of divorced parents, children of homosexual parents, children brought up in single-parent families… So many different models that, with time, have become «commonplace» and no longer raise questions… Who are these «new» children, these «pioneer» children? What is their vision of their atypical situation? How do they talk about this «particularity» with those around them? At a time when a new style of parenting is trying to find its place in our society, this film aims to be a forum for those most concerned: those children who, today, are writing the first pages of this new account. THE VOICE OF BEAUTY THE SONG THAT HEALS THE LAND 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2019

From Arizona to Normandy, from the Indian Canyons to the capitals of Europe, singing has always underscored the need to express a universal dialogue, that of interdependence with the land, that of harmony, of beauty. First considered as an art in Western Cultures, Native Americans claimed it had the power of healing past wounds. From the genocide of their people to the wars of the 20th century, continuing to remember is also a necessity in our modern-day Western world where it can be hard to find your bearings. Far from reducing native singing to an inaccessible form of spirituality, this film portrays it as representing a celebration of the places where civilisations evolved, sometimes bathed in violence, or a reconciliation between man and his natural environment which has been disfigured in the name of progress.
