ARCIMBOLDO

A PORTRAIT OF AN AUDACIOUS MAN 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021 NEW What if Giuseppe Arcimboldo was a painter of Modern Art before its time? With their unique style, the Composite Heads by the Milanese painter are among the most famous works from the Renaissance period. Largely forgotten after his death in 1593, he was re-discovered by the Surrealists. After them, throughout the 20th century, numerous Modern and Contemporary artists were inspired by his works. His art was in constant metamorphosis, profoundly audacious, sometimes subversive

and terrifying. It puzzled his contemporaries and continues to intrigue those who see it. The film will be an unexpected dialogue between Arcimboldo’s audacities and inventions on the one hand and a selection of more contemporary works and artists on the other hand. It will provide an opportunity to rediscover this enigmatic 16thcentury artist and explore his legacy. Director(s): Benoit Felici Producer(s): CPB Films, Arte France

BASQUIAT, A REMIX 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2022

NEW

This film is first and foremost a journey. From Brooklyn to Abidjan, via the Mississippi, Puerto Rico and Haiti. A journey through the search for his identity of the most famous black American contemporary artist and one of the 20th century’s major painters. Despite his Haitian and Puerto Rican roots, Basquiat had practically never explored Africa. Yet, he never stopped dreaming about it, transcending his «cultural memory» to produce iconic works. It isn’t said often enough: although Basquiat, like no other painter before him, anticipated the globalisation of art, above all, he stood up to an America riddled with racism. The film takes a refreshing look at Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life, stripped of the clichés that get in the way of the political significance of his work. LOLITA

A MISUNDERSTOOD FANTASY 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021 NEW Vladimir Nabokov was almost 60 years old. She was his ‘time bomb’. Two pale green volumes. Three syllables. Lo. Li. Ta. The book tells, in the first person, the devouring passion of Humbert Humbert, a 37-year-old man, for his 12-year-old stepdaughter. In the puritan America of the time, the publishing world feared opprobrium, prosecution, and prison. The book will finally come out for the first time in France, thanks to the publisher Maurice Girodias - a specialist in scandals and erotic works. Once the censorship is lifted, the book will become a best-seller all over the world. In this film, we will tell the true story of Lolita against the backdrop of censorship and scandal, the great misunderstanding now crystallized in the fantasy of the lolita, and we will try to unravel the mystery of the enigmatic Nabokov. THE NAMELESS WOMAN

THE STORY OF JEANNE & BAUDELAIRE 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021 NEW A large painting by Gustave Courbet can be found at the Orsay Museum in Paris, entitled: A real allegory, the Artist’s studio, completed in 1855. This strange painting represents the painter in the centre, as he is painting a landscape surrounded by his potential models. But who can be seen behind Baudelaire? A slightly blur silhouette, reappearing on the wall like a ghost. It is Jeanne Duval, the poet’s mistress, who has been covered up with a coat of paint. But who is Jeanne Duval and why was she erased? This film narrates the love story of Jeanne Duval and Charles Baudelaire, an incredibly famous white poet and a black woman whose real name is left unknown. A story which went on their entire life, in the middle of the 19th century. Director(s): Régine Abadia Producer(s): Little Big Story

THE WORLD IN A PAINTING ONGOING COLLECTION VELASQUEZ’S CHILI PEPPER 75’/52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2022

PRESALES

Seville, 1618. Diego Velázquez painted Christ in the House of Martha and Mary. A simple parable from the Gospels? A moral tale? An ode to the dominated? What if the answer to the enigma set by Velázquez was actually found in the tiny red pepper in the foreground of the painting? From Seville to Mexico City, from Madrid to London, passing through the valleys of Oaxaca, this documentary film retraces all the adventures, conquests, tragic experiences as well as the

artistic inventions that allowed this pepper to appear in the painting of the greatest painter of the 17th century. Against the backdrop of a ‘war of images’ of which we are still the heirs. Director(s): Nicolas Autheman Producer(s): Schuch Productions

VERMEER’S HAT 75’/52’ | EN/FR | 4K/HD | 2020

NEW

In this documentary film, which is loosely based on the famous book by Canadian writer, Timothy Brook, Vermeer’s Hat, we offer a new way of understanding the global world we live in thanks to… a 17th-century painting. A simple, apparently anecdotal painting, far from being one of the Dutch painter’s most famous, entitled Officer and Laughing Girl painted in 1655. A charming scene in which an officer, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, talks with a young woman who is holding a glass of wine in her hand. The scene is set in one of the household interiors of which Vermeer was so fond. Director(s): Nicolas Autheman Producer(s): Schuch Productions

YAN PEI-MING

JOAN MIRÓ

LEONARDO DA VINCI

Red guard during the Cultural Revolution in China, Ming was at one time a painter for Maoist propaganda, before coming to France to study at the school of Fine Arts. He has became a major figure in the contemporary art world. Classical and academic painter, Ming has revisited many different styles, drawing inspiration from the great masters. His work includes a Mona Lisa tryptic, some erotic paintings and even portraits of Marylin Monroe, Prince Charles or Jacques Chirac. After the Louvre, his work is going to be added to the collections of the Petit Palais and the Musée d’Orsay, hanging besides other great masters. This film showcases his consecration: Ming is a star.

Thirty years after his death, Joan Miró has become an iconic figure in the art world. The more time passes, the more his work becomes universal, going beyond borders and genres. Thanks to the exceptional presence of Joan Punyet Miró, the artist’s grandson and administrator, as well as previously unseen archives and a privileged access to his work and his studio, we shall discover some of the painter’s less familiar facets: the private Miró, who could «by day be a treasure, and by night, a monster»; Miró the provocateur, as well as the Miró who was sensitive to the distress of his compatriots. We shall also evoke the pressures involved in handling such an immense painter’s heritage, a burden which falls on a single descendant, and the tragic fate of most of the members of his family.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, this documentary propose to apprehend Leonardo’s art jointly of his technical and scientific research. The engineer and man of science cannot be fully appreciated without taking into account the fact he was first and foremost an artist with an incredible sense of observation and drawing. To decipher the da Vinci mystery, we will embark upon a lengthy journey in da Vinci’s footsteps from the village where he was born to Clos Lucé, his last home, passing through the places he frequented in Florence, Milan… Leonardo’s own writings, drawings, sketches, paintings will answer the various questions raised. We will reveal his vision and perspective, as his own eye guides us, thanks to astonishing visual effects matching those of the best sci-fi films.

THE PORTRAIT OF THE FILMMAKER CHARLES BURNETT 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2019

BETTY BOOP FOREVER 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2020 The first female human character in the entire history of cartoons, she was also the first woman to have the leading role in a cartoon, Betty Boop Forever. Those gorgeous legs forever! Those huge bedroom eyes forever! Her legendary Boop-oop-a-doop forever! As she gets ready to blow out 90 candles next year, the sexy little brunette who has never grown old is still an enigma. Femme fatale, sex object, womanchild, liberated woman, businesswoman, bosom friend or feminist pioneer? What image of the modern woman does Betty Boop project? How does she stand in relation to the society of the 1930’s of her birth and of today? What can we learn from our first animated female star?

Charles Burnett is an eminent figure of the ‘‘Black independent movement’’ during the sixties. His dual identity, as Afro-American and independent filmmaker, makes his work rare and valuable, revealing the shortcomings of American society, unequal and divided. A subtle and powerful storyteller, he describes the lives and dreams of Afro-American families, mixing culture and politics in his own unique way. Based on his precious testimony and those from figures of cinema or specialists, the film is a portrait of Charles Burnett, which follows him in his hometown of Los Angeles, but also tells the story of fifty years of American history scarred by the fight for civil rights. It shows how precious his work is for the young generations, as it still resonates today with movements like Black lives matter. Director(s): Pierre-Paul Puljiz Producer(s): Tamara Films

THE ART MARKET DURING THE NAZI OCCUPATION 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2021

The art market in France was surprisingly flourishing under the Occupation. Almost two million works of art changed hands between 1940 and 1944. Over 35,000 trains left Paris loaded with artwork and spoliated objects, in particular those belonging to Jewish families. What practices and what networks did those in the art market put in place during this five-year period? Who were they? What role did the French national museums play in this market?

A unique investigation which brings together gallery owners, collectors, art dealers, Nazi dignitaries, auctioneers, unscrupulous curators, or simple intermediaries against a background of antisemitic occupation laws. Reproductive mothers with families, they then contributed to the German war machine, working in factories or volunteering as guards in the death camps. This documentary will shatter the conventional image of these women. Loyal, indoctrinated, ambitious and fanatic, they were an integral part of the regime. Through a historical and psychological investigation, we will attempt a better understanding of their radicalisation and fanatic drift, by unveiling a largely unknown dimension of the Nazi system. In Adolf Hitler’s bunker in Berlin, bombarded day and night by the Russian army, an elegant woman of around 40 poisons her 6 children before committing suicide. Her name was Magda Goebbels, and she was the wife of the notorious and sinister propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, and the Third Reich’s true First Lady. From this inaugural scene, this documentary, in the form of a psychological thriller, attempts to understand how Magdalena Friedlander became Magda Goebbels. A woman who bore the name of the Jewish step-father who raised her. A woman who married a wealthy automobile magnate with libertarian ideas, before divorcing him, and becoming an emancipated young woman at the height of fashion. For Magda Goebbels is as much a product of history - that of Nazism as of her own tortured psyche. Director(s): Antoine Vitkine Producer(s): CPB Films

THOSE WHO SAID NO GERMAN WOMEN AGAINST HITLER 52’ | EN/FR | HD | 2019

We’ve all seen the archive images that show German women in a state of euphoria, almost in a trance, crying out the name of Adolf Hitler, «their» Führer. But all German women were not fervent Nazis, far from it …. The story we wish to tell in this documentary is that of the women who had the courage to say no to Nazi ideology, who resisted barbarity in spite of the risks of any opposition to the system. Mothers, labourers, communist activists, socialists or conservatives, nuns, students, they were as diverse as German society itself. Some were part of networks, others worked with their husbands, fiancés or friends. Some even fought against the system alone. The forms of resistance were also multiple: civil disobedience, humanitarian, religious, or political resistance. Director(s): Barbara Necek Producer(s): 13 Productions

SLAVERY ROUTES 4x52’ | EN/FR | HD/4K | 2018 This is the story of a world whose territories and own frontiers were built by the slave trade. A world where violence, subjugation and profit imposed their routes. The history of slavery did not begin in the cotton fields. It is a much older tragedy, that has been going on since the dawn of humanity. From the VIIth century on, and for over 1,200 years, Africa was the epicenter of a gigantic traffic of human beings traversing the entire globe. Nubian, Fulani, Mandinka, Songhai, Susu, Akan, Yoruba, Igbo, Kongo, Yao, Somali… Over 20 million Africans were deported, sold and enslaved. This criminal system thrived, laying the foundations of empires around the world. Its scale was such that for a long time, it has been impossible to relate it comprehensively. And yet, it raises a fundamental question: how did Africa end up at the heart of the slavery routes? Episode 1. 476-1375: BEYOND THE DESERT Episode 2. 1375-1620: FOR ALL THE GOLD IN THE WORLD Episode 3. 1620 -1789: FROM SUGAR TO REBELLION Episode 4. 1789-1888: SLAVERY’S NEW FRONTIERS

In 1900, the eyes of the whole world were on Paris. Joy and optimism were at a peak in the elegant City of Light. The Exposition Universelle, which opened in April 1900, was an enormous celebration of French success. It welcomed 51 million visitors, half of whom were foreigners. Significant investments had been made to ensure that the Exposition would be a truly extraordinary event. Two splendid exhibition halls, the Petit and Grand Palais, were built for the occasion, along with three railroad stations: Gare d’Orsay, Gare de Lyon, and Gare des Invalides. Paris became a showcase city, displaying the latest technical and scientific inventions, and also boasting avant-garde art galleries, lively cabarets, the ultimate in high fashion, and the Parisiennes. THE HEAVY WATER WAR 52’ | EN/FR | 4K/HD | 2019 In 1939 the scientific world is buzzing. Research on the atom is advancing fast and everyone wants to be the first to succeed in uranium fission. Governments closely follow these advances, while international tensions are rising. The race for the atomic bomb is launched. Unlimited funds are injected into scientific research: Hitler attracts the best physicists by giving them financial and human resources hitherto unknown and the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is established in France. But to control nuclear fission, the French and the Germans alike absolutely need heavy water. This rare resource is produced in a single factory in Vemork, a small Norwegian town, which then becomes a major strategic issue. From 1939 to 1944, the Allies lead several secret operations to recover the stocks of heavy water, and to prevent Hitler getting his hands on them. This documentary, constructed as a true historical thriller, returns for the first time to this little known, but nevertheless crucial episode from the Second World War. Behind it, however, lurks a biased labor monitoring system fueled directly by the customer, unbeknownst to him. UTOPIAS offers unique portraits of women and men who, with disconcerting humility, decide to make their dreams of a different life persist at all costs. Whether it’s the Landless Worker’s Movement in Brazil, the Oasis of Peace in Israel, cooperativism in the heart of the Basque Country, Sarayaku territory in the heart of the Amazon, mobile ZADs on the roads of Belgium and France, or democracy under the Turkish and Syrian bombings, the key is to stay as close as possible to those who try to change the rules every day, to get out of the norm, to no longer blindly conform to it and thus invent other ways of making society. SEALED LIPS 72’ | EN/FR | HD | 2020

Today, a word from a child before the law is not worth much. Everyone shelters from it. Very few people dare to report it. Through the hearings of a juvenile judge and the words of child victims who have become adults, the film recounts the impact of violence that is invisible and unknown to us, adults. It describes the effects of domestic violence on a person’s life course. How can one survive childhood and what kind of adult should one become? Where are the wounds? Young age does not protect against trauma. On the contrary, neuroscience today shows that it is more pathogenic at this age and has consequences. This film gives children a voice (anonymous in the judge’s office, face to face with the camera once they are adults). We can listen to their experiences and feelings and take their opinions into account… As a first step towards a greater respect for their right to be protected. THE CHILDREN SPEAK 65’ | EN/FR | HD | 2020 In the past, as moral values have changed, documentaries have recorded the words of children of divorced parents, children of homosexual parents, children brought up in single-parent families… So many different models that, with time, have become «commonplace» and no longer raise questions… Who are these «new» children, these «pioneer» children? What is their vision of their atypical situation? How do they talk about this «particularity» with those around them? At a time when a new style of parenting is trying to find its place in our society, this film aims to be a forum for those most concerned: those children who, today, are writing the first pages of this new account.

At the time of entering adolescence, Yanie is faced with an uprooting. His foster parents, who have cared for him since he was two, are retiring. The Social Services believe that his mother, Virginie, in rehabilitation after a prison sentence, can’t get him back yet. His father is serving a 3 year prison sentence for violence. So Yanie will enter into a new family, begin a new life with strangers. At the age of 14 he has to start from scratch, with the risk of ending up in a children’s home, if things don’t work out. It’s another test, added to all the others, perhaps also a chance to break with the old models cluttering up his life. The film attempts to capture that moment called resilience, when an adolescent chooses - or not - to construct himself against all the odds of his life story. For all scientists agree on at least one thing: that the melting permafrost is one of the most dangerous and serious environmental catastrophes to come. This frozen layer under the earth’s surface incubates millions of tons of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Just a few degrees warmer, and the fragile permafrost will set off a climate bomb. The sea level in Venice has increased drastically in the last century or so, threatening the very existence of the city. Global warming and the harmful effects of tourism have amplified the phenomenon of acqua alta (sudden rise in sea level), rendering the traditional responses of inhabitants obsolete. It is urgent to act today. Projects conceived in laboratories across the globe are joining forces to save the city. These include Ramses, a 3D modelization of the lagoon produced using lasers, which analyzes rises in water level; and MOSE, a series of movable dams costing over 4 billion euros, intended to block the sea in case of acqua alta. Sight, hearing, speed, language, reproduction, cooperation... abilities honed and perfected over the centuries in order to adapt to the environment, and which are often more than surprising. This film explores the rabbit’s super powers, seen in a variety of unusual situations in a range of countries around the world. We shall see how the fluffy, cuddly bunny - often with a rather random life expectancy - can prove to be highy resourceful and even indomitable, if they get the opportunity... Prey or pest, weak or strong, cute or dangerous... the rabbit is all of these, and much, much more. Director(s): Hervé Glabeck & Aurélie Saillard Producer(s): CPB Films

THE ADVENTURE OF AMERICA’S HORSES

AN EPIC HORSEBACK RIDE ACROSS TWO CONTINENTS 52’ | EN/FR | 4K/HD | 2019 These iconic American horses opened up routes through a continent and conquered its plains and unspoiled heart. Today, these untamed horses are fighting for their freedom and even their very survival in the wide open spaces of the American West. But who is aware that these present-day Mustangs are first and foremost the guardians of an unheralded heritage? That of the horses of the New World. This is an epic story, nearly 500 years old, and we have chosen to tell it through an exceptional journey, akin to that taken by the horses themselves.
