Taking the stereotypical approach of health care and expanding on the concept, to embrace a new mode of modern medical health. ď Ž Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans, and creating a method of monitoring those afflicted with the disease was something very close and personal to me; having family members suffering from various heart problems, the main idea behind the product was to ensure the disease is properly cared for while promoting a longer and healthier life.

Collecting recorded data via the Monitoro dashboard, users are able to track, update and monitor their ever-changing conditions to provide the most real-time information back to their primary care doctor and heart-related specialists.  Most heart monitoring patients have had greater data collection when monitored within their homes.  To accurately figure out the proper adjustments to their care, Monitoro’s data is linked to your doctors at timed intervals each day. When a series of checkpoints are missed, or abnormal readings are submitted, an emergency message is sent to the physician and a call is made to the user to ensure their safety.

MONITORO medical record Updated through your physician’s Monitoro dashboard, the mobile medical record uses encrypted data communication methods to promote a consistent and safe transfer of information.  Acting as a quick link to aiding emergency staff, your mobile medical record can be plugged in to any USB supported device to open a window showcasing pertinent information about the user.  Nowhere are specifics, such as social security numbers, date of birth, or other identifiable personal information will be present, giving you—the user—a piece of mind if the bracelet is lost or stolen.

MONITORO brochure The brochure's purpose is to act as a conversation point between patients and physicians in answering questions about Monitoro and its service. ď Ž A modified tri-fold, the brochure has three flaps with the most common questions that user-testing provided. ď Ž Because of its limit on space, the brochure is meant to be a kickoff discussion point for heart disease patients to get a better idea of methods they can employ for their health situation.

I am the middleman between the client and audience, contracted to ensure that the message matches the intended visual.  The agreed-upon information between two opposite parties can be manipulated in a manner that is both visually appealing and contextually relevant—the annual report is this said document—able to communicate the inside workings of a company.  Time, materials, man-hours—all varying, complex, numerical data that needs to be presented in a way for stakeholders to fully grasp the intimate day-to-day internal workings of their investment opportunity.

FORD MOTORS annual report The company has a storied history, creating some of the most memorable and impactful creations in automotive history. ď Ž The visuals for the layout were easy to apply, linking the history with the modern numerical data by using older Ford ads. ď Ž Using the Ford corporate blue and a gold pulled from their archives, where the theme and consistency of placements all stem from the heritage of the brand.

3D type

3 I am skillful; pushing the written word beyond the norm of the printed page. Type has the ability to denote a feeling, an emotion—yet when paired with other words or forms, help paint a picture. Singular words can, in turn, stick with their original context, and when experimented beyond the format of a page, sentence, or paragraph, help create a visual. ď Ž White is a seen in two different manners; either as the absence of all tone, or the culmination of all light spectrums melded together. In this exploration, the pursuit was for the discovery on how white could be perceived in context of a color alone and when paired with visual hints.

3D type exploration of white  Glue  The all-too-familiar white sticky stuff from our childhoods, all stocked in surplus within the cupboards of elementary classrooms. Represented by the word “Elmers”, viewers are hinted to the context of the sticky lines of glue as well as the color of the word.  Hot  When a surface reaches critical mass with heat, the structure becomes a blinding white hot. Taking some charcoal briquettes and setting them afire, the type was worked into the surface, almost becoming a negative word, black amongst the white-hot coals around it.  Cocaine  White has connection with the dark vices of the world, associated within the powder substances users snort, sniff, or cook to get a really quick high. The powder—powdered sugar—was arranged to spell out “lines”, giving a relation to the drug.  Milk  Another connecting feature to the color white is the milk we drink everyday. Taking a general carton, cutting the word “milk” into the form, and then painting it solid white tells the story to what this visual stands for.

 Christmas  Taking a few large handfuls of fallen pine needles, the white-painted ones help to spell out ‘x-mas’, giving the viewer insight to the relationship of the stereotypical pines and terminology associated with Christmas time.  Hide  Just about everyone over thirty can relate to the old days of using liquid paper—otherwise known as white out—to fix mistakes written with pen and/or set using a typewriter. The document uses a presidential seal, which has all of the information covered, except for where the negative spaces spell out the word hide.

 Collar  Many people feel trapped as drones, toiling day-in, day-out at their cubicle environments. “Slave” is worked into the keyboard, rearranging the keys to allude to the concept of being white collar.  White Elephant  The annual unwanted gift at any exchange of presents has the label of being a “white elephant”—seen as being utterly useless or troublesome, especially being something that is expensive to maintain or difficult to get rid of. Taking a box and carving the type into it, the word stands out, especially with the addition of the white ribbon and bow on the top.  Ruined  Sterility is the act of thoroughly cleaning something to a point where nothing exists within the realm it coincides; when one thinks of the idea of “clean” or “sterile”, this usually is related to bleach. Bleach purifies, and in some cases—as this visual explores—ruins things. The cloth-covered book has been sprayed with bleach, eating into the black cotton, showing the hidden word within.

3D type idioms

An idiom is a phrase or a fixed expression that has a figurative, or sometimes literal, meaning. Combining language to paint a figurative image, the idiom hopes to relate common understandings within colorful contexts.  Melded within everyday language, the idiom plays an important role of defining some thing outside of the stereotypical label, relating the message to other imagery that share the same sort of interpretation.  What would happen if the idiom then became a physical visual instead of an idealized, agreed-upon idea? What if my idea of an idiom has a context beyond your familiarity?  In a means to discover if these questions are answerable, I needed to create a pair of idioms that represent my understanding of the term, instead of the stereotype associated with the message.  Taking two basic words, printing them, shooting photos of them, and then manipulating them digitally, I was able to stretch the essence of the idiom, yet create an aesthetically dynamic composition to help explain my thoughts.

BIASED BLITZ e-book The City of Pittsburgh Public Works department has a familiar annual event known as the Pothole Blitz, where residence of the city can call a tip line to report potholes that need filled, or sections of road that need replaced. In the best efforts of the city, certain neighborhoods were ignored, even though all of the resident reporting were much higher than outer regions. ď Ž The e-book is an expose on the biased way the City went about the Blitz, as proven by Public Works numbers and backed-up by my own recorded data.

PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL casebound book Understanding there is a fine line between the lives of the electronic lifer, this book attempts to take the reader further down the proverbial rabbit hole by weaving information with variable strips of binary code. Taking a page from the clichéd visual standpoint of technical colors—obnoxious glowing greens and muted greys—the bright-green colors work to push the identity of the text.  Filled with passages of philosophers, theorists, and general lunatics, the text is full of green binary code to have the type come alive over the digital aspect of the theme.  Bringing the digital world to print, the odd images of computer-headed people doing regular tasks, as-well-as pixelated infographics, the lines are indeed blurring between real life and a cybernetic existence.

6 Working in the trades, one defining feature to a specific skill set is the toolbelt that workers wear.  No matter the trade, nothing ever becomes more of an annoyance than a tool that doesn’t fit within the belt’s existing apparatus, thereby creating a situation where trying to force tools into a pouch can bring about dangerous consequences, especially when said worker is above grade.

LOCKJAW brochure and posters Taking one of the most used and oddball sized tools—a crowbar—and adapting to one’s toolbelt became a simple choice; by taking a widely-used tool and making it adaptable across a variety of trades, Lockjaw hopes to create a safe and consistent storage solution for all crowbars, and other elongated tools, like setting pins for steelworkers.

Able to work within multiple formats, across multiple media, to drive a singular theme through a course of materials, all in hopes of relating to one, singular message. In this case, a film director has a particular style—a quasi-label that follows them throughout their career. ď Ž In this project, the ability to hone in on the message of the director over a wide variety of media pushed the visuals beyond the screen from whence his namesake is popularized. In marking the 50th anniversary of the original Night of the Living Dead (1968), the trick was to have imagery that melds with the apocalyptic nature, yet still profoundly stand with the logo set in gold foil.

ZOMBIE KING ammo can All contained within an ammunition can, the collection of items fit snuggly inside. The can—a Vitenam-era .556 NATO round canister—is stenciled with information matching the theme and age of the can, as well as the information relating to the festival in honor of Romero.  Depicting the end of society, Romero’s films all teetered on pushing the boundaries of our human nature, therefore, the ammo can was a clear choice to depict survival during the zombie apocalypse.

ZOMBIE KING dvd set All of Romero’s DEAD films are included in the case. Each one is styled to look like a worn book, stamped with gold foil to fill the theme of being a survival item, saved from the shelves of a destroyed library.  Each film’s cover is textured differently, focusing on the DEAD title. Housed in slim jewel cases, all six films fit within the ammunition box.

ZOMBIE KING lanyard passes Four lanyards were made for particular groups, VIP, general admission, press, and staff—all done in specific colors for instant identification. Each pass utilized an image from the original DEAD film. ď Ž General admission passes have a shot of some of the general stumbling horde, whereas the staff pass has the first zombie encountered from the original DEAD film. The VIP passes have the image of Ben (the hero from the first film) and the press pass has a picture from the original taping on set from 1968.

ZOMBIE KING tickets As a collage from the original Night of the Living Dead (1968), the image is colored and dissected to create individual palettes as-well-as one, solid piece. ď Ž Each ticket has the same foil-stamp treatment as the other items, like the DVD covers, giving a shining testament to Romero’s directorial history.

ZOMBIE KING swag Sales of brand items during the festival would all have to be survival-related. A folding survival shovel, .50 caliber bottle opener, and branded multi-tool, help festival-goers survive the zombie apocalypse, while the hats, patches, and work shirts, all aid in selling the festival. ď Ž Each item is tailored to represent collectability of the festival, giving goers plenty of things to commemorate their time at the festival.

ZOMBIE KING uniforms Since the end of the world and battling the undead horde are the main themes of Romero’s films, creating memorable uniforms that represent the theme meant diving into uniforms that are meant to deal with death and disease.  Security would wear bright yellow hazmat-style suits, and vendors sport bright bluehooded safety gear.  The general ticket taker and other workers would wear a solid red one-piece work uniform.  Each item sticks out, and each item is something that coincides with the theme of the festival.

summation I’m not perfect, nor do I pretend to in hopes of feeling good in the eyes of my peers. I look at my weaknesses, embrace them, and try to build on them in the hopes of becoming a better instructor and designer.  Wrapped within a mixture of two fields that seemingly rely heavily on ego — academia and graphic design — I am the opposite; I am one who has no problems admitting I am wrong, and committing to trying to learn from the situation.  This, in my opinion, is the character of what makes a good educator — pushing and striving to grow, and passing those traits on to their students to use in the field and future endeavors.

RESUME artist statement I struggled for years trying to find my voice in a turbulent environment that championed poking fun at President G.W. Bush and borrowing from other artworks in an attempt to further my own career.  It wasn’t until a friend of mine brought up Paul Rand’s glorious quote — so simple, yet so profound.  I didn’t have to be the next great graphic designer; I didn’t have to create the next movement that was going to impress and inspire designers of the future — I just had to be me.  All of those years attempting to define myself under one label was trying, yet there was good that came from the experience.  I am a flexible designer — I come up with ideas and designs based on what the client asks for or needs. I address the problem, and in the process, attempt something different than what I’ve done before.
