AIRLINE NEWS

Three aircraft sub-leased to Lithuanian Airline During the low season for Sky Angkor Airlines, we have chosen to sub-lease some aircraft to other operators whose seasonal requirements are the opposite of our own. Accordingly, in April of this year we sub-leased three Airbus aircraft to Avion Express, an airline based in Lithuania. The three aircraft will be returned later in the year to coincide with Sky Angkor Airline’s high season which typically starts around November.

Scheduled flights from Shantou to Sihanoukville Sky Angkor Airlines is planning to start regular flights from Shantou, a prefecture-level city on the eastern coast of Guangdong, to Sihahoukville on the coast of Cambodia. We have operated the route as charter flights since June and expect to start regular operations around October, with three weekly departures. These scheduled flights to Sihanoukville provide our Chinese customers with an additional opportunity to travel to one of the most popular destinations in Cambodia.

APSARA DANCE

DINNERS Their beauty and elegance eternally preserved in the bas-reliefs of Angkor Wat, Banteay Srei and beyond, the Apsara dancers of Angkor are as much a part of the Khmer Empire’s astonishing legacy as the very temples whose walls they grace. Inspired by the divine celestial nymphs stirred up during the creation of the material world, a modern Apsara dance performance is more than just a show; it’s a unique window to times and legends past. The Churning of the Sea of Milk is part of the foundation story that produced many of the most important characters associated with Hinduism, including Indra’s mount the elephant Airavata, Lakshmi the Goddess of fortune and wealth, Kaustubha the most valuable gem in the world adopted by Vishnu, and of course dozens of the divine semi-goddesses who were the ethereal embodiments of grace and superb in the art of dancing. Some of the temples featured halls whose every wall is intricately carved with images of these divine dancers – see, for example, Preah Khan and Ta Prohm – and from here many of the inspirations for the traditional form of Apsara dancing are drawn. These are intense, slow-moving, graceful movements accompanied by the music of the classical Khmer pinpeat orchestra. In elaborate, jewelled costumes the dancers’ veil their incredible strength and control behind an exquisite grace and fluidity, creating a spectacle that is simply hypnotic.

Very often the dances tell stories from the Reamker, the Cambodian version of the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. Through dramatic tales of trust, loyalty, love and revenge between princes, giants, warriors, monkeys, mermaids, and a tortured princess, the Reamker describes the lives of Prince Rama and Queen Sita. While it is threaded through all parts of Cambodian art and culture, nowhere does it find such a powerful expression as in the Khmer dances whose origins can still be traced on the sandstone walls of Angkor Wat. These dances, known as L’khaon, may include even more elaborate costumes and masks but can be no less precise and demanding as the classical style. Modern performances will also frequently include more modern stories, told with more expressive, free-flowing movements that provide the language through which a tale is told. Sometimes these are playful celebrations of the rituals of daily village life: the harvest, fishing, and, of course, courtship rituals. And sometimes they are more pointed morality tales highlighting the social dangers of drinking, stealing or gambling. All of this, and something a little more dramatic, can be found in venues across Siem Reap. If you are looking for an intimate and romantic setting, the Apsara Theatre just off Wat Bo Road offers a unique experience. In a beautifully preserved wooden building, they host theatre dinner shows every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, accompanied by a classic Khmer meal. If you want to take things more upmarket, Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor hosts dinner dance shows every evening from October to March, and three nights a week from April to September. The shows come with a sumptuous pan-Asian buffet dinner. For a completely different experience, the Smile of Angkor shows have been wowing crowds every evening for almost five years in a purpose-built theatre along Route 6, towards Phnom Penh. Here, the dances and stories of old are transformed into an elaborate, dazzling bonanza of dance, light, music and fun. The show is not traditional, but a dynamic, thoroughly modern celebration of everything that the traditions stand for. Siem Reap’s Apsara dances allow us to enjoy a graceful memory of an ancient history when from this seemingly remote corner of Cambodia, the Khmer Empire ruled across the entire Southeast Asian region. The dances let the legends live on. Photo: Zzvet

THE RICH TRADITION

Of Wood carving in Cambodia Siem Reap offers much more in the way of cultural fulfillment than just the wondrous temples of Angkor. A great number of the Kingdom’s most skilled and respected artists now call this city home, elevating their respective crafts and with them, the reputation of Siem Reap as the Kingdom’s epicentre of culture. The rich tradition of woodcarving is particularly well represented. Wander along the city’s streets and you will get a good sense of just how important this ancient art form still is within Cambodian society. The city is teeming with souvenir stores and workshops specialising in traditional wooden sculptures, with artisans working out in the open turning lifeless blocks of rosewood into vibrantly intricate representations of celestial nymphs, known in the local language as ‘apsaras’. “The main inspiration for most artisans is the rich historical and cultural past of Cambodia,” explains Pok Thongeng, a master wood-carver working in Siem Reap for local social enterprise Artisans Angkor. According to Thongeng, modern-day carpenters use their woodcarving skills to preserve their ancestors’ traditions. Wood craftsmen working with Artisans Angkor usually depict important figures of the Angkor era, including King Jayavarman VII, the Buddha, and apsaras. Khmer woodwork can be traced back as far as the sixth century, continues Thongeng. Initially, it was heavily influenced by Hinduism, with designs and images from the pantheon leaving an indelible mark on the art form. At the end of the 12th century, Buddhism emerged in the area, forever changing the practice by instigating the building of wooden pagodas filled with buddhist relics.

A dearth of surviving wooden artifacts make it hard to establish the place that this art form held during the Angkor Empire (802-1431). But Chan Sim, a woodcarving master and former professor at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, believes it played a considerable role, with skilled wood artists being called upon by the kings to contribute their work to the vast buildings of Angkor.

24 Arun

According to Sim, it is precisely during the Angkor period that the four main styles of Cambodian woodcarving were consolidated. These main design types are still used to this day, each one possessing unique characteristics and symbolising different aspects of the human experience. The wind style employs fancifully curved lines and spirals and motifs of clouds to represent life and breath. The water style

in-flight magazine August - November 2018

pays homage to the life-giving quality of water by making use of lotus flowers, lily pads and other plants, in addition to fish. Honouring the body, the land style tends to feature flowers, tree stalks and plants. Lastly, the fire style epitomises war and death, a representation of the darker qualities of the human condition. Relying on depictions of flames, this design form is mainly used in temples during funerals and cremation ceremonies.

Photos: Artisan Angkor

It is here that we see one of the main differences between the woodcarving tradition in Cambodia and that of neighboring nations: while Thai and Laotian artisans use the fire style freely and abundantly, Cambodians are more cautious and only resort to it when strictly necessary. Sim also highlights the strong connection between woodcarving and local religious beliefs, noting that spirits may be ‘fooled’

into inhabiting some of the most realistic pieces. Statues must be treated with utmost respect and veneration, insists Sim, as they may be home to an ancestor or a powerful entity from the afterlife. If we’ve managed to tickle your curiosity and you wish to know more about this ancient art form, then Artisans Angkor’s main centre in Siem Reap is a good place to start. Apart from witnessing wood-carvers

at work, you will be able to purchase fine examples of wooden figures, scenes and decorative lintels. Complement that with a visit to Phnom Penh, where the National Museum of Cambodia exhibits wooden ethnographic objects and Buddhist statues from the Angkor and post-Angkorian periods, while the adjacent section of Street 178 is renowned for its many art boutique stores selling a stunning selection of cultural handicrafts.

history and geography

Religion

Cambodia was once the homeland of the Khmer Empire (802-1431), one of the mightiest states in the history of Southeast Asia.

The official religion is Theravada Buddhism – approximately 95% of the population follows this faith. Theravada Buddhism uses as its core doctrinal text the Pali Canon, a collection of the oldest recorded Buddhist texts.

The Mekong River, which flows through the Kingdom, and the Tonle Sap (Great Lake) are the lifeline of the people who live along the waterways. There are three main mountain ranges: the Cardamom mountains in the southwest, the Dangkrek mountains in the north and the Annamite mountains in the northeast.

Photo: Zeren Z

The bulk of the remaining Cambodian population believes in Islam, Christianity or tribal animism. The wat (Buddhist pagoda) and the monks are at the centre of religious life, but interact with indigenous beliefs such as the central role of ancestors and spirits.

Photo: BasPhoto

language

currency

The official language is Khmer, an old language with influences from Sanskrit and Pali.

Cambodian Riel is the country’s official currency, although the US dollar is widely accepted. At the time of writing, the exchange rate is approximately 4,000 riel to $1. We recommend to always carry with you some riel for smaller purchases and short trips around by moto, tuktuk or taxi.

Due to historical ties with France, many educated older Cambodians have a conversational level of French. In recent years, English has gained popularity and is widely spoken in the larger cities. As in any country, learning a few words of the local language goes a long way. In Cambodia, a good way to gain the trust and friendship of people is to make small talk in Khmer.

ATMs are widespread in urban centres but less so in the provinces. Banks are generally open from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Generally speaking, people will not accept torn or damaged dollar bills, so keep your high value notes neat and clean and do not accept blemished ones. This usually does not apply to riel notes.

climate

cultural sensitivities

Cambodia’s climate is dominated by two distinct seasons.

In Cambodia, it is considered rude to touch someone’s head. Also, when you sit on the ground, don’t have the soles of your feet pointing to someone else, or resting on furniture. Dress respectfully and modestly.

The rainy season, which runs from May to October, can see night-time temperatures drop to 22°C (72°F) and is generally accompanied by high humidity. The heaviest precipitation occurs in September and October, though usually just as afternoon downpours. The dry season lasts from November to April with daytime temperatures rising steadily during this period, up from 32°C (90°F) to 40°C (104°F) in April. January and February are typically the driest months.

electricity The electrical supply uses 220 volts. The plugs are not standardised and all sorts of variations exist: however, type A, C and G are the most common. The electricity supply has improved over the years, and brownouts are now much rarer.

transport

health and safety

Tuk-tuks and motodops (motorbike taxis) are generally considered to be the best way to make your way around Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, though for a genuine Cambodian experience in the capital, try hailing a "cyclo" (rickshaw).

Temperatures in the Kingdom can rise to formidable levels. Keep hydrated by drinking around a litre of fluids per hour, wear loose clothing, light in colour and fabric, as well as a hat and sun cream, and stay in the shade or indoors during the hottest parts of the day if possible.

An average tuk-tuk ride should cost you between $2 to $4, while a motodop driver will rarely charge you over $2. Fares increase at night. Metered taxis are now also available in Phnom Penh. At 3,000 riel per kilometre, they are cheap but quite hard to come by in the street, so try to have the number or mobile app of a taxi company handy.

Protect yourself against mosquito -transmitted diseases – particularly in humid areas such as the coast or the Tonlé Sap Lake vicinity – by applying generous amounts of mosquito repellent. Try to go for brands that contain the lowest concentrations of DEET. When possible, try to sleep under a mosquito net.

Orientation Siem Reap is fairly compact and easy to navigate. The majority of restaurants, markets, shopping, leisure activities and facilities are located within walking distance of each other, mostly within the Old Market area on the west side of the river. The six main areas catering to tourists are: the Old Market Area, Wat Bo, Old French Quarter, Taphul Village, Road to Angkor and the Airport Road.

Getting around Thanks to its relatively small size, it’s easy to navigate Siem Reap on foot or by rented bicycle. If you’re feeling a little tired after a day of temple trekking, motorbike drivers and tuk-tuks are plentiful. Motos are the cheapest option, around 3,000 riel ($0.75) per short journey), though tuk-tuks are safer, weatherproof and more family-friendly. Tuk-tuks are a little pricier – around $1 for short journeys with a premium at night.

Photo: Rock and Wasp

Siem Reap’s silk industry makes it one of the best cities to pick up luxury silk scarves and dresses, often at bargain prices. The abundance of great spas in the city means that natural products are another Siem Reap specialty. Ceramics, stonework and woodcarvings made by highly skilled local specialists are also available, while a few galleries also sell fine art paintings and photography.

The Angkor Night Market remains a major tourist draw, with over 200 huts offering souvenirs, clothing, jewellery, and more. Meanwhile, the Old Market has trinkets, crafts and colourful clothing lining its aisles. Noon to Night Market and Central Market are other options, while Art Centre Night Market sells local arts and crafts from charities.

When it comes to finding a souvenir, markets are the best place to bag a bargain. The ever-popular traditional, silk v can be picked up for a handful of dollars, while more expensive carved statues and elaborate dresses can be haggled down in price. However, be wary of vendors claiming that their products are locally made without providing any convincing proof.

NIGHT MARKETS

BARGAIN HUNTING Photo: Thanachet Maviang

Siem Reap, one of Cambodia’s most charming cities has something to offer no matter the time of day-or night. With magnificent temples to be seen by day, the city takes on a whole new persona once dusk has etched out the last of the day’s rays. Tourists, showered and rested after a day of sightseeing, take to the streets to find out what the evening has to offer. They are greeted by a veritable feast for the eyes with street vendors churning out crepes with chocolate, rows of street carts selling strange fruits and deep-fried insects, and more. For many, this is also the perfect time to fill their suitcases with some Khmer memorabilia. With the temples and floating villages now closed, the obvious choices are the night markets. Generally organised by themes, one can spend a surprising amount of time picking out the most beautiful silk scarf, the most delicate scent, the best wooden bowls, the loveliest of dresses and, of course, the perfect piece of jewellery.

knowing the story behind what you are buying; it’s the best way to understand the value of your purchase.

A great place to start this endeavour would be Angkor Night Market, which opens from 5pm to midnight. Neat and clean you can find anything from a coin purse, typical Asian spices to replicate your favourite local dishes, beautiful paintings of Apsaras which will look great in your home, or perhaps some typical souvenir T-shirts that make great gifts for your favourite nephew. Take your time chatting with the friendly vendors and

You can head back across the river to the old market for a wide selection of budget-friendly souvenirs and make a night of friendly haggling (it is an art, and one to be enjoyed), trying on endless scarves to find the perfect hue for your skin tone, and soaking up the night ambiance overall. Night markets are, after all, one of the very best ways to understand a culture, and we are very sure that Siem Reap’s will not disappoint!

Another option, located on the west side of the river opposite the old market, is the Made in Cambodia Market located within the King’s Road Angkor complex. More of a day-and-night market, it showcases a range of locally-made products ranging from colourful lacquerware, scented soaps, flavourful rice wines and much more.

temples

A n g ko r

Hosting one of the world’s greatest wonders of the world, it’s little surprise that more than one million visitors flock to behold the beauty of the Angkor temples each year. The temple ruins date back between the 9th and 13th century AD, the majority of which are located within the boundaries of the Angkor Archaeological Park just outside of Siem Reap city. The most well-known of these is Angkor Wat, an official UNESCO World Heritage site, though the jungle-covered Ta Prohm gained widespread popularity amongst tourists after featuring in the 2001 film ‘Tomb Raider’. The giant, enchanting stone faces of the Bayon temple are one of the most photographed features of the park, while the delicate carvings of Banteay Srei really must be viewed close up to fully appreciate their intricacy. All of the temples within the complex represent the ruins of the ancient Angkorian capital cities of the Khmer Empire, often referred to as the ‘Golden Age’ of Khmer civilisation. Admission to the complex currently costs $37 for a one-day pass, $62 for a three-day pass and $72 for a week-long pass.

Angkor Wat

Ta Prohm

Greeting visitors as they first enter the temple complex is the magnificent Angkor Wat, which remains to this day the largest religious monument in the world. King Suryavarman II built the Hindu/Buddhist temple in the 12th century, which features hundreds of metres of ornate bas-relief carvings and stunning architecture, it’s such a national icon that it’s depicted on the Cambodian flag. Visit at sunrise or sunset to catch it at its most spectacular.

Ta Prohm is one of the most visually impressive temples in Cambodia’s Angkor region. Surrounded by lush jungle, the structures have been completely seized by towering trees that devour the bare stone walls and roofs. Ta Prohm’s popularity spiked in 2001, when the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Tomb Raider’ included a scene showing filmstar Angelina Jolie walking amongst the murky shadows of the temple’s iconic galleries.

The BAYON

BANTEAY SREI

The Bayon is a richly decorated temple standing at the centre of Angkor Thom, the last capital city of the Khmer Empire. The temple’s most distinctive feature is the multitude of massive stone faces with serene expressions that jut out from the upper terrace. The temple is also known for two impressive sets of bas-reliefs, which present an unusual combination of mythological, historical, and everyday life scenes.

Although it’s 25km north of the main temple complex, Banteay Srei is worth the detour. Built mainly with vivid pink sandstone, the small-scale temple features highly detailed and well-preserved carvings depicting mythical scenes. It’s name, meaning ‘citadel of women’, is reflected in the petite size and delicate details of the temple, with a significant number of goddesses depicted on its walls.

Temple trekking  Pack smart: Bring plenty of water to keep you hydrated, sunglasses and sunscreen to combat the sun's rays, and a raincoat or an umbrella to keep you dry during the wet season.  Dress respectfully: Angkor is an ancient place of worship, so you must dress accordingly. Men and women should both wear clothing down to the knees and covering their shoulders. Many temples within the complex will refuse entry to those who do not adhere to this rule, including Angkor Wat.  Avoid visiting at certain times: The sun is hottest in the middle of the day and early afternoon, especially during hot season. The best times to avoid crowds are early in the morning, when Angkor opens (around 5am), and in the evening just before the complex closes at 6pm.

Photography tips  Bring the right equipment: To get the best shot of your favourite temple, use an ultra-wide angle lens (11-16mm). Take with you a standard zoom lens (18-70mm) as well for close-ups of carvings.  Light it right: Check where the sun is and shoot the temple with the sun behind you. The resulting shot will illuminate the stones beautifully and capture more details.  Enhance colour: If the day is cloudy and the stone of the temples looks a bit lifeless, change your ‘white balance’ setting to ‘daylight’ or ‘cloudy’ to warm up the shot.

EXPLORING ANGKOR

Siam Reap may a quaint town with sleepy villas and charming street corners, but it is home to the biggest religious complex in the world. Not only is Angkor Wat itself the stunning centrepiece, but there are certain other gems that are very much worth your time. Phnom Bakheng is a temple mountain located in the Archaeological Park that was constructed between 889 and 910 AD. Built during the reign of King Yasovarman I, it is one of the best places to capture a breathtaking view that is camera worthy, but can’t quite be done justice with a simple lens. If you are an avid photographer we recommend that you bring a decent zoom lens and plan Phnom Bakheng into your day, depending what kind of light delights you more - dawn or dusk for example.

It is widely believed that the temple mountain was dedicated to Shiva and built to symbolise Mount Meru, the center of the Universe and home to the Gods according to Hindu religion. On Phnom Bakheng, you can see examples of this in the form of the five tiers and seven layers that are built in to the complex, thought to represent the seven heavens that are found in Hindu mythology. Although the complex has been run down quite a bit, the original structure contained a total of 44 towers at the base, 12 on each of the five tiers. History books will tell you that it was actually the very first temple to be built in the Angkor vicinity.

Given the temple’s popularity as a “must–see” option on any visit to Siem Reap, there has been considerable wear and tear from the sheer number of visitors, especially during the past ten to fifteen years as tourist numbers have grown significantly.

In the year 2004, the World Monument Fund commenced working together with APSARA, a local authority that is dedicated to the preservation of sites in Angkor Wat. We urge you to treat this ancient site with great care when you visit, perhaps even learn more about the efforts that these two organisations are taking in order to preserve everything you visit. The more you learn, the more you will appreciate what is in front of your eyes.

Sihanoukville

Paradise Sihanoukville is the Kingdom’s laidback leisure centre – home to white sandy beaches and tropical islands. More formally Krong Preah Sihanouk, but also known as Kampong Saom, it is one of Cambodia’s most lively tourist destinations. While Serendipity Beach’s popularity continues to rise among backpackers, the beautiful Otres Beach further along the coast is the ideal spot for a relaxed, family vacation. The southern islands are the place to be if you are looking for a tropical paradise vibe and if you want to walk undisturbed down endless stretches of coconut palm-shaded sand.

Orientation Most of Sihanoukville’s beaches are on the southwestern point of the peninsula, with Independence Beach to the north and Otres to the south. Sihanoukville town centre is a 20-minute walk inland (or five-minute moto ride) from Ochheuteal beach. All the main services are in town, but basic facilities, like minimarts, can be found just off many of the beaches.

Whatever taste of Asian cuisine you are craving, there's most likely a restaurant in Sihanoukville that serves it. The town's numerous expat-owned restaurants cook up many international culinary delights, including Japanese, Korean, and, of course, Chinese. Restaurants specialising in local food are also widely available. From classics like fish amok to beef lok lak, finding your favourite Khmer dish will be a piece of (rice) cake.

Sihanoukville is a fishing town where fresh seafood is brought to the market daily, and in astonishing variety. Restaurateurs purchase items from markets around town and use it in many different dishes, from amok to fish & chips. If you're a fan of the fruits of the sea, make sure you visit one of the city’s many fish markets: you’ll find your favourite items, from barracuda and marlin fillets to crab and squid.

Sihanoukville is famous for its nightlife and there’s no shortage of bars and nocturnal hangouts. People party in the bars along the beach, but there are plenty of off-beach places as well, including a string of bars along Serendipity Beach Road. Victory Hill is home to what many consider the city’s official bar street, with more than a dozen hostess and sports bars.

Day Trips

Sihanoukville is, without a doubt, the water sports capital of Cambodia, with a long list of aquatic activities offered up. Many visit this beach town in search of their scuba diving certification, or to relax with a spot of fishing, snorkeling or standup paddleboarding, while others go for more action-oriented activities, such as jet skiing and flyboarding.

When the sun sets over the glistening ocean, Sihanoukville does not go to sleep. Indeed, the city’s nightlife is one of the Kingdom’s richest and most vibrant. Finding a casino in Sihanoukville is easy, with over 14 gambling venues spread across the city. Likewise, Sihanoukville has plenty to offer music lovers, with an almost never-ending selection of KTVs and live music venues.

A great number of fascinating places lie within a two-hour ride from town, making for some interesting day trips. You can visit the small, charming towns of Kampot and Kep. Steung Hauv, a small fishing community, can be found an hour north out of town. Other great excursions include Ream National Park and Kbal Chhay waterfall.

Islands

When it comes to beaches in Sihanoukville, there’s something for everyone. Party animals and sun worshippers alike should head to Ochheuteal Beach, where they will find pristine sands, happy hour deals and a diverse range of accommodation. Serendipity Beach is a well-known section of this beachfront, with a welcoming atmosphere and a large range of restaurants and bars in which to party. For families and anyone looking for a bit of isolated peace and quiet, Otres Beach and the even more deserted Otres 2 is pure soft sand and glorious sunsets in a relatively undeveloped paradise.

The most popular of the islands off the mainland coast of Sihanoukville is Koh Rong. Visitors are rewarded for making the 26km boat trip by crystalline waters and white sandy beaches. Though sparsely populated, the island has a wide range of food and accommodation options. Koh Rong Sanloem may be the island's smaller neighbour, but it nevertheless hosts diverse treats, from bioluminescent phytoplankton to full moon beach parties. Diving enthusiasts should head out to Koh Kaong Kang/Koh Thass or the uninhabited island of Koh Koun.

A City Closest To People And Tradition

Tianjin is a city of long history and rich foreign culture, which makes for a beautiful balance between tradition and modernity. Only when you visit can you find it a place closest to its people. Travel days in Tianjin always start with a delicious breakfast, for traditional culture here places much emphasis on food. As early at 6am, the tables on the street stalls or snack restaurants are completely occupied and covered with large masses of deep-fried dough sticks accompanied by bowls of soymilk, still steaming and slightly foaming at the edges. The Grand Canal not only nourishes the prosperity of Tianjin’s economy and enriches the diversity of Tianjin’s diet, but also breeds its colourful folk culture. Head for the city’s ancient culture street, located near the Haihe River, where you can appreciate characteristic handicrafts like the Yangliuqing wood engraved pictures, the beautiful clay sculptures, and snuff bottles.

Journey to the town of Yangliuqing and you will be intoxicated by the strong sense of folk culture. The theatrical stage, the memorial archway, and the Wenchang Pavilion are the three treasures of this historic location. You can also see the Shi Family Residential Complex in the centre of the town, built in the late Qing Dynasty, which is one of the biggest and best-protected homes in North China. In most countries, nightlife involves clubs or luxurious shopping malls; however Tianjian also offers traditional art performances, with Crosstalk comedy being the most famous. Crosstalk began as a form of street art, incorporating joke-telling, comedic banter, imitations, or borrowing from other forms of performance art such as Peking Opera, all with the express purpose of making audiences laugh. If you’re not a Mandarin speaker, you may miss the content that deals with historical stories and current affairs, but you won’t miss the fun. The linguistical acrobatics and rapid-fire banter the artists use to trigger rounds of laughter will certainly bring a smile to your face. It’s hard to say which is more attractive to teahouse goers, the Crosstalk or tea. Tea is like the lubricant to a good performance, making you feel relaxed and free from life's pressure. You can choose what you like out of a long list of varieties, from scented teas such as jasmine and chrysanthemum to the many kinds of slightly-caffeinated oolong and green teas. Then you have a good mood to enjoy the show, and the show, in return, makes you burst into laughter.

Phnom Penh Airport Information How to get to town Phnom Penh International Airport is not too far from the downtown area, but getting to your hotel can take between 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and the time of day. Registered taxis are ready to pick you up curbside and charge a flat rate of $15 to most locations. Taxis are a great option as the road can be bumpy and dusty, and at certain times of year, quite hot. For travellers looking to save money, just walk to the airport’s gate to find a fleet of tuk-tuks that cost around $8 a trip, but be sure to bargain before you get in because they may ask for more. Hotels can also arrange for airport pickup by private car.

Amenities The airport has recently undergone a $100 million expansion, bringing in a new food court and many new stores, with some yet to be completed. Many amenities are still on offer, though. Weary travellers can rest up at Amata Massage, which offers back and foot massages, while business class passengers can head to the airport’s new VIP and Premium lounges for a relaxing interlude before their flight. Shopping options continue to grow, but Monument Books has been an airport staple since 1998, offering the latest titles in English, French and a selection other languages. Shoppers can hit up Dufry Cambodia for duty-free luxury items, while boutique shops offer traditional Khmer scarves and souvenirs as well as contemporary fashion.

Shopping & Dining Phnom Penh’s airport is home to Cambodia’s first Starbucks outlet, which opened in December 2015. Coffee lovers can also get their fix at Costa Coffee or Blue Pumpkin bakery. Western food is available in the form of Burger King, Dairy Queen, the Pizza Company, and BBQ Chicken. Those looking for an Asian fix can stop at Taste of Asia, a sit-down restaurant also located in the terminal, or Pho 24 or Yoshinoya on the ground floor. For more upscale fare, the Foreign Correspondent’s Club runs a popular branch in the departure terminal offering a selection of dishes from its iconic Riverside restaurant. Thirsty travellers can also stop by for a beer and a chance to use the free Wi-Fi.

Siem Reap Airport Information How to get to town Siem Reap airport offers a few ways to get into town. The airport van costs $10 and can comfortably carry a group of six or more. At $7, the taxi service can only carry about four people and has limited luggage space. If you’re a solo traveller and have packed light, moto taxis are available for just $2, but be aware that bag snatchings are common occurrences on the route from the airport. It’s also possible to find tuk-tuks on the street outside of the airport, and negotiate a price with them. The airport is about 11km from the center, with a typical journey taking from around 15 to 25 minutes.

Amenities The airport is well equipped with comforts to soothe even the most exhausted traveller. The ‘Le Salon’ lounge, located in the international departure hall, is open from 5am till midnight. The lounge facilities include all-day food and beverages, internet access, international newspapers and magazines, international TV and comfortable seats. The airport also has a VIP lounge, accessible to government workers and private customers.

There is free Wi-Fi throughout the airport, and a baggage wrapping service at the front of the departure entrance. Public phones are available, offering credit card and collect call services.

Shopping & Dining Lovers of local food should head to Asian Spice, an affordable eatery in the arrival hall, or Taste of Asia in the departure lounge. The Blue Pumpkin is a café selling everything from coffee to cakes, while Dairy Queen serves up hotdogs and ice creams. The FCC Bar sells wine, beer and food, recreating the chic ambience of the famous Phnom Penh establishment. There’s a wide range of shops in the airport. Clothes and accessories can be found at Artisans Angkor, Khmer Angkor Jewelry, Smateria, Rêveries du Mékong and Bambou Indochine. Travel stress can be soothed away at Beauty Spa Foot Massage, and U Care pharmacy stocks a good range of medication and toiletries. There’s also a flower shop, Soma Flowers, where you can pick up a gift for whoever awaits you in Siem Reap.

Sihanoukville Airport Information How to get to town Sihanoukville International Airport is about 20km from the centre of town, with a typical journey taking around 20 minutes. The airport itself only offers one means of transport: a $6 airport shuttle that will drop you off wherever you want to go in town, aside from Otres Beach. It’s also possible to catch a tuk-tuk from the airport, although Sihanoukville is known for its high tuk-tuk prices. Taxis are also usually available nearby, with a trip costing around $20.

Amenities There is free Wi-Fi available throughout the airport. Public phones are also available, offering credit card and collect call services.

Arun
