Greetings from the President Greetings Contestants, Parents and Friends, What a joy and a blessing it is for me to present our 2017 Jabberwock Court. On behalf of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, it is my honor and pleasure to extend warm greetings for an extraordinary evening of pageantry and celebration. I would like to begin by extending a heartfelt thank you to the Jabberwock Committee and those who have encouraged these five incredible young ladies to‌Think the unthinkable, Believe the unbelievable, Become fearless and Take the Limits Off to go the distance to achieve success regardless of the odds. When the Jabberwock Program began some months ago, the committee chair persons made a promise to work closely with the young ladies to ensure their experience would be impactful. Their attendance and participation in meaningful workshops, cultural events and service projects proved to be just that! The program has also provided fundraising opportunities to help defray educational costs through scholarship awards. As these young women uncover the next chapters in their lives, we encourage them to treasure the memories, friendships and life lessons learned during their program participation. I am so grateful for the overwhelming parental and committee members support given to the contestants during this journey. Without their enthusiastic contributions, this year’s Jabberwock Program would not have been a successful endeavor. Finally, I would like to thank the members of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter who gave their time and resources in our continuing effort to empower our local community through service! Sincerely yours, Lorraine Coleman President Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated a private, non-profit organization, was founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University in Washington, D.C. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need. The first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, D.C., March 1913. Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930. Delta Sigma Theta is a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately African-American college-educated women. The sorority currently has more then 1,000 chapters located in the United States, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust:

Economic Development International Awareness and Involvement Educational Development Physical and Mental Health Political Awareness and Involvement

The need to continue the Founders legacy of scholarship, service and sisterhood evolved into the formation of a new chapter in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on March 18, 1979 by 22 alumnae members living in the Orange County area. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter implements the sorority’s mission of public service through a diverse array of programs and projects under the umbrella of the five point programmatic thrust. Some of the programs and projects since the inception of the chapter in 1979 include: • Miss Jabberwock Scholarship Program – an educational scholarship and public service fundraiser with cultural and enrichment programming components • College Scholarships to students primarily from Orange and Chatham counties totaling more than $175,000 • Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy – a program for girls 10-14 with focus on math and science enrichment • Frances N. From the Jabberwock Co-Chairs Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded by 22 amazing collegiate women who were steadfast in their commitment to Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. It was their intentional focus on these three principles that inspires the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter to host the 2017 Miss Jabberwock Program. This has been a phenomenal journey. We set out with a primary goal – to create an unforgettable experience for our Jabberwock participants and their families. Our theme for this year’s pageant – “Think. Believe. Become. Based on an interpretation of the classic Alice in Wonderland written by English mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated established the Jabberwock Pageant in 1925. In Carroll’s book, the mythical character the “Jabberwocky” summons all the creatures in the kingdom to perform at a gala event. For more than 90 years, chapters around the globe have implemented this evening of pageantry and entertainment to provide the community’s most promising young women an opportunity to raise scholarship funds. Participants also take part in educational, cultural and public service opportunities which allow them to grow personally and form lifelong relationships.

LaKeya C. Hardy LaKeya C. Hardy was born and raised in Prince George’s County, MD. As she considered where to matriculate after high school, she knew she wanted the historically black college experience from a university that is recognized for its science and math departments. Naturally, LaKeya was drawn south to attend North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biology with a pre-med concentration. She is currently a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pursuing a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology. A dancer since the age of 5, it was no surprise when LaKeya became the captain of the world renowned “Golden Delight” auxiliary dance line of NC A&T’s Blue and Gold Marching Machine. Training under the direction of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, Wings of Fire Dance Studio and Expressions Dance Theatre, LaKeya is an expert in the following genres: ballet, tap, jazz, Horton, modern, majorette and African dance. Currently she serves as the SPIRIT! Dance Company coordinator of Empower Dance Studio, located in downtown Durham. LaKeya is known as a graceful dancer who is inspired by her family. She feels deeply that dance is her very existence because it builds inner and outer strength. LaKeya’s ultimate goal upon graduation is to start a non-profit organization designed to encourage and prepare young ladies for higher education with an interest in STEM careers.

DAUGHTERS OF PURPOSE Living Life God’s Way A Biblically Based Program Designed For Teen Girls Ages 14-18

Traci Ford Allison Matthews Joyce Roland Charlene Rogers Taylor

The purpose of this program is to return to the concept of Living Life God’s Way, through the promotion of abstinence, sexual purity, and learning to make wise decisions. ❖

Teen girls today find themselves surrounded by a highly charged sexual environment on a daily basis; sex is everywhere - within the home, at church, at school, at social venues…

Sex is presented in such a way that if one is not an active participant, it is something wrong with the individual. The words virgin or virginity have almost become obsolete.

Biblical principles such as purity and holiness have little or no affect in their lives. We believe it is time for a change!

We believe the teen girls who participate in this program, will make a conscientious choice to commit to abstinence and sexual purity until marriage. This choice will become clear as they learn their value and selfworth in the eyes of their Creator, gain an understanding of their unique design as female, build self-esteem and confidence, come to know the power of the word NO, learn to honor the sacredness of their body with the assurance that their body is a gift from God. For more details, please contact Pastor Pamela Clegg: 919-945-4607 or

This program is about changing lives, fostering healing and restoration; One Teen at a Time, One Step at a Time, in the Presence of God!

Alexis Simone Irving The Northside Baptist Church Family Wishes you much Success!
