About

“It’s a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together” - Unknown As a third year Interior Design student at Washington State University, I have been given the chance to transform my passion into a career. While studying at the WSU School of Design and Construction, my program has exposed me to a variety of disciplines including Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Construction Management. As I continue in to my last year of school, I will strive to use my knowledge and education to prepare my self for the next chapter of my career and obtaining a design internship.

Boundary County Library Where: Bonners Ferry, Idaho Who: Boundary County Public Library Media Used: Sketch Up, hand skills, InDesign Purpose: Teaming up with the Rural County Design Initiative (RCDI), the Boundary County Library sought our design help

in creating a redesign of their existing public library. The idea was to create a functional shared space for the community to grow and learn together. This 30,000 sq. ft. project located in Bonners Ferry, Idaho challenged us designers to work in teams and use mixed media to create a propoal that has the chance to become a reality.

Boundary County Library

The second floor roof terrace provides a unique space for library visitors to spend time outside. With seating and a green house, this space is an ideal learning area and will promote the use of agriculture in the town.

An exterior courtyard will attract community members and visitors in Bonners Ferry and welcome them to the library. The space will give the community a place to join together and spend time outside on weather permitting days.

Boundary County Library First Floor Plan:

The floor plan of this library maximizes the lot space and creates a unique footprint that can be utilized by the community. With various technical and agricultural amenities, this library will allow the small community of Boundary County to learn and grow and develop as a whole. Fabrication Labs, Tech Labs, classrooms, and many more features of this building will attract the community and create a centralized hub in the town for people to gather and spend their time.

Boundary County Library Second Floor Plan:

The floor plan of this library maximizes the lot space and creates a unique footprint that can be utilized by the community. With various technical and agricultural amenities, this library will allow the small community of Boundary County to learn and grow and develop as a whole. Fabrication Labs, Tech Labs, classrooms, and many more features of this building will attract the community and create a centralized hub in the town for people to gather and spend their time.

Hand Sketches Where: Pullman, Washington Media Used: Hand Sketching, Hand Rendering Purpose: To practice and explore various medias using hand sketching and rendering skills. Enhancing my hand skills by

mixing pencil, pens, and rendering markers to draw various pieces of furniture. Broadening my sketching spectrum and capabilities.

Hand Sketches

These hand sketched and rendered drawings show the effort and time I have put in to practicing my hand skills. It is important to know these skills and have the ability to sketch and draw anything that is wanted.

Merry Cellars Construction Documents Where: Pullman, Washington Media Used: Revit Who: Merry Cellars Winery and South Fork Bistro Purpose: This project hypothetically created a partner business called “Merry Forks” by combining a popular winery,

Merry Cellars, and a bistro, South Fork, in Pullman, WA to create a new, fresh place for students and locals to spend their time. Using Revit, a model design was built and construction documents were created to provide extensive information as if this were a real project. the following examples show that I drastically increase my understanding of both Revit and CD’s.

Lighting Office Design Where: Pullman, Washington Media Used: Revit Who: Small Theoretical Office Purpose: To design a small office space around the use of light and space. With a conference room, open office area, and

kitchen space, this design should take advantage of the natural light and artificial light in the space.

This office uses daylighting and natural light to create the ideal work space for the employees.

Lighting Office Design

This office maximizes daylight with large East facing windows and light colored materials. The glass partition for the main conference room allows light to flood in to the room, giving a nice atmosphere for the employess. Accent lighting and optional desk lighting will provide workers with ample amounts of light, With recessed cans suplimenting the natural light, this office is the ideal space for maximum productivity.

Lighting Office Design Electric Lighting Zones:

Entry: Category B: Simple orientation: 5 FC; Re-

cessed can lighting in ceiling. Wall mounted sconce for accent lighting in sitting area. Single light switch for each.

Conference Room: Category C: Simple visual

tasks; 10FC, light that can be changed easily. Ceiling mounted fluorescents. Dimming control, step switch control.

Workroom: Category D/E: Tasks of high contrast:

30- 50 FC. Soft light, relying on natural light to save energy. Ceiling mounted fluorescents. Step switch. Employees will have individual desk lamps.

Kitchen: Category D: Tasks of high contrast and large size; 30 FC. Recessed cans mounted in ceiling and under cabinet task lighting for kitchen activities. Single witch for ceiling lights, single switch for under cabinet lighting. Restrooms: Category E: Tasks of high

contrast and small size: 50 FC. Light needs to be bright to make up for no natural light. Recessed can lighting and wall mounted sconce. Single switch.

Utility: Category E: Tasks of high contrast and small size: 50 FC. Light needs to be bright to make up for no natural light. Recessed can lighting with a single switch.

Lighting Office Design Daylight Zone: The daylight zone is 15’ as shown in yellow on the floor plan to the left, which is calculated by the formula below: Window light= 10’ x 1.5 = daylight factor

Daylight Source Qualities: This office space has large windows on the south facing side of the building. Each at 9’ wide by 10’ high, the windows let in a substantial amount of light into the office workspace. With natural daylight, employees will benefit from the aesthetics and functionality of the light source. These important features of the office space will allow for a quality work environment with views to nature and plenty of natural lighting for work and tasks. To control the daylight from these large windows, I would recommend solar shades. These would protect the office from sun damage and provide control for when more or less light is desired. Solar shades come in various materials and transparencies. The most ideal for this scenario would be a darker gray/black shade color with a lower transparency so that harsh sun in the summer could be blocked and some heat in the winter could be contained and protected within the office.

Washington State IT Building Where: Pullman, Washington Media Used: Hand Sketching, Sketch-Up Who: Washington State IT Building Purpose: To redesign the atrium space at the IT Building that has been covered by another newly built structure. The goal is

to provide the employees with a third place where they can spend their free time and interacte with one another.

The entrance to the atrium will lead you in to a workplace oasis, with a water feature walkway and planters surrounding the walls.

Washington State IT Building The atrium space will consist of a small coffee shop and seating area where employees and visitors can spend their free time and eat lunch or talk to a friend, The natural woods and lighting will bring back the nature that was once there in the old atrium space. With a more intamate seating area in the back, this space will be the perfect area for relaxation and a chance to converse.

This view of the entrance shows the water feature that will bring back the aspects of nature that have been missing since the roof has been covered, The lighting feature will reflect off the water and create an interesting and unique addition to the new atrium. These features will attract passerbys and draw them in to the new addition of the IT building.

Dear Ms. Robins, I recently learned about an internship opportunity with Starbucks in the Store Development and Design unit. I am writing to express my interest in this internship and believe that I would be a strong and worthy candidate for this position.

The Interior Design program that I am currently enrolled in at Washington State University has provided me with necessary strengths and assets that would be applicable to this internship position. A few of these strengths include, but are not limited to, teamwork and leadership skills, a desire for continued excellence, and a need to always continue to grow and learn. The program that I am enrolled in has taught me skills in hand drafting, sketching, modeling skills and well as an increased knowledge in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, Google Sketch Up, and Adobe programs. I would be an excellent fit for this position due to my dedication and passion to the design field.

My resume, which I have enclosed for your review, contains additional details about my accomplishments. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you to discuss the qualifications I would bring to your organization. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Peyton Halstead
