Linking these contrasting parts outlines the concept of the Plinth and the Forest; a series of plateaus gradually forming a bridge

provide spaces for local inhabitants to grow their own food and plants, together with a market space. Thus, local crafts and trade are linked with the organic, common greens - benefitting the local economy of the area. Under the bridge are spaces for indoor plant growing, requiring more controlled environments, in addition to cafĂŠs, shops and a skills exchange center. This center is dedicated to the revitalizing of local craftsmanship within the surrounding area, acting as a knowledge-based platform, with lectures and workshops revolving around the themes of agriculture, horticulture, arts and crafts. Through urban public farming initiatives, Zagreb is invited down to the ground, where inhabitants can learn and experience the importance of local food production, arts and crafts.

2

The project intervenes in an area heavily defined by the railway tracks, slicing the site into two parts. An inherent duality of these two parts of the area can be observed: the northern area contains a well-known, bustling shopping street, in addition to a well-defined park situated harmoniously within the morphology of the city blocks. The south part has a less defined green area mainly used for sports and recreation, scattered shops and restaurants and a presence of low- and middle class families. The project connects these two areas two-folded; through acupunctural additions of local shops, crafts and gardens, and by forming a market square outside a large sports hall.

4 Plan, Lower Floor

The new building houses both the canteen and the library in the same space. This is for staff and students to experience both spaces at the same time without fragmenting and dividing the spaces. Walking through a tiny slit entrance

in the thick stone wall, the visitor enters the 6 metres tall double-height space, providing a profound spiritual feeling, as opposed to other low-storied eating and reading rooms. The flexible space on Ground Floor can be arranged by using only six tables with dimension of 1600mm long by 800mm wide. These dimensions make it easy to arrange eating space for 48 students at a time, as well as other functions that can bring both the students and local inhabitants of the village together through public activities. By focusing on food, the central open space can be used in a wide arrange of ways that could preserve cultural agriculture from the Puan valley and promote economic growth at the same time. The market and workshops also bring the locals together, and create a space for gatherings and public events.

4

The competition brief was for a new school addition in China. The concept of the building is based on using the walls as spaces, initially inspired by the local Buyi culture and its tradition of worshiping gods and ancestors by setting up niches in their homes. By using local material such as stone, this can be used effectively due to the tectonic proper ties of stone (carving) and its ability to keep heat out. The layout of the open flexible space follows the traditional layout of Buyi housing construction: a large, rectangular open room with all the main functions in one space. The Wall and the Castle acted as precedents and functions as both construction element and spatial element.
