FARMHOUSE BATHROOM | DESIGN INSPIRATION

Shine on

The owners of this farmhouse bathroom have given it a glamorous look using reflective metal surfaces ‘I originally saw an image of a nickel bath in a magazine abroad some years ago and on deciding to begin work on our bathroom I did some online research and discovered bathroom company William Holland,’ says owner Penny Anderson. ‘Our house dates back to the 16th century and was originally a farm with attached outbuildings, so any decorating project needs to accommodate all the quirky features, limited light and low ceilings. ‘My husband Charles Lee is a builder with an interest in period property

(www.buildingonreputation.co.uk). He has a great eye for detail and while I enjoy the final touches he is the master of finishes and overall style. There was little structural work involved, other than the accidental uncovering of a small inglenook fireplace that, while lovely, did spoil the original design plan. However we simply couldn’t pretend we hadn’t found it so it stayed. The furniture is sourced from Indonesia and the photographs on the wall are taken from the book Kate Moss by Mario Testino that I tore out and had framed.’

or years, Louise Waight had harboured a dream of owning a house that could accommodate a grand panoramic wallpaper. When she first walked in to this handsome Victorian property and spied the dining room, she knew she had found that place. ‘I remember I instantly envisaged how it could look,’ she says. ‘You need a certain room to carry off a grand scenic paper and this one had all the right proportions, as well as a wonderful three-metre-high ceiling.’ Soon after the sale had been agreed, a stroke of serendipity led Louise, an interior designer, to an exquisite 1920s block-printed design by the iconic firm Arthur Sanderson & Sons. ‘I spotted an advertorial in an interiors magazine about a collection of vintage panoramic papers that had been acquired by the wallpaper designer Georgia Horton,’ Louise recalls. ‘They included this beautiful mural of Kew Gardens. It was a nightmare to hang – it took all of two weeks – but I never regretted buying it for a second.’ It was going to be a long time, however, before the decorators were grappling with >> www.periodhomesandinteriors.com

‘My parents love antiques and taught me what to look out for and how to spot a well-made piece’ the vintage wallpaper. When Louise and her husband Duncan bought the property, which is situated in a small village near Tunbridge Wells in Kent, it needed everything doing to it, including replumbing, rewiring and replastering throughout. There was also the problem of the lower-ground floor, which housed a Heath Robinson-esque array of Victorian pipework, as well as a sizeable colony of frogs. ‘We basically had a system of open drains, so when I set the washing machine going, the water just flowed beneath the house,’ says Louise. Thus began a four-year relationship with the builders, the first year of which the couple and their two young sons, Oscar and Toby, spent living off-site in a rental property nearby. While the slime-ridden lower-ground floor seemed desperately unappealing, Louise had the foresight to realise it could give the family

1,600sq ft of extra living space. ‘This floor alone was almost the size of our previous home in north London,’ she says. “Even though it entailed a huge amount of work, we didn’t need to excavate, as the ceiling height was already there, as were the light wells. Reclaiming this floor gave us a cinema room, music room, gym, pantry, boot room and laundry room.’

sense Of prOpOrtiOn The entrance level houses the main living spaces, and Louise was keen to keep the original layout. ‘When you have wellproportioned rooms, you don’t need to start knocking through all the walls, as it would make the spaces too cavernous,’ she explains. Her only concessions were to knock a double doorway through from the dining room to the kitchen, and a doorway from the library – originally a laundry room – into the morning

room beyond, both relatively simple adjustments that have dramatically improved the way these spaces flow from one room to another. Louise describes how she painted 150 sheets of paper in different sample colours, stepping over the builders to tape them to the walls throughout the house. These swatches were then carefully studied in different lights – a painstaking process that has resulted in subtle colour schemes ranging from soft pebble greys to pale biscuit and almond shades. Gentle hues are punctuated with stronger colours, such as bursts of orange in the morning room and a moody lead grey for the kitchen units. ‘The kitchen is a big room with lots of light and I knew I had to be a bit bold and a bit brave in here to create an impact,’ she concedes.

as well as a honed eye for detail, evidenced, for example, in antique chairs that have been beautifully reupholstered, or a perfectly pleated Swedish blind. Her passion for antiques also informs the schemes. ‘My parents love art and antiques and they taught me what to look out for, and how to spot a well-made piece,’ says Louise, who has filled the house with her finds, from a 19th-century gilded and marble-topped table to a vintage collection of framed moths and butterflies.

OngOing prOject One might reasonably expect that after four years of living with the builders, Louise might have been happy to wave them farewell. But instead she has embarked on a new phase of the project. ‘I’m trying to recreate the gardens as they must have once been – it is rather like designing different “rooms” within the grounds,’ she says, adding: ‘When we took on this property, it was desperately unloved. My mission is to bring a smile back to both the inside and the exterior of the house.’ PH www.periodhomesandinteriors.com

INSIDER KNOW-HOW | EXPERT ADVICE

HOW TO…

PLAN THE PERFECT BATHROOM Industry experts share their hints and tips on how to achieve a first-class finish

Install a wet room Katrina Hoyle, Head of Group Marketing at Crosswater Holdings (www.crosswater.co.uk), says:

Design walk-in shower panel, from £235; Central showerhead £189; both Simpsons (www.simpsonsenclosures.co.uk)

‘If you’re tempted by the sleek aesthetic of a wet room, there are several practicalities to think about. The most important thing to consider is how you’re going to waterproof your space. This is a project to get the professionals in for, as a gradient will have to be built into the room to channel water into a drain, then the walls and floors will need to be primed and tiled. The benefits for all this hard work are obvious. Apart from adding value to your home, wet rooms are easier to clean than standard bathrooms and they’re perfect for smaller spaces as removing a bath creates so much more space to play with.’

Tip ‘If you’re designing your bathroom from

scratch, underfloor heating is invaluable, particularly in a wet floor – it might seem a luxury but it will help dry out the water on the floor and keep tiles toasty warm underfoot.’

Get decorative with tiles Louisa Charlotte, exclusive designer at Walls and Floors (www.wallsandfloors.co.uk), says: ‘Bathrooms are typically steamy, damp environments, making tiles a perfect surface choice. For those of you who desire that minimalistic Scandi-inspired approach, consider wood-effect tiles; now more life-like than ever with realistic Riad Mosaic tiles, £32.95 per sq m, texture and knots, and much more Walls and Floors durable than the real thing. Alternatively, if you want to create a relaxing, Zeninspired spa-style bathroom to unwind in, try a combination of glass mosaics and glittering floor tiles. This will give your bathroom a sparkling backdrop and create a more serene ambience that will enhance any accessories such as scented candles.’ 32 | Issue Two

Choose a feature bath Jane Harper, marketing consultant of The Cast Iron Bath Company (www.castironbath.co.uk), says: ‘Bathing should be a glorious experience, and a stylish bath will always be a focal point.’ CHOOSING A SHAPE • Rectangular bath – this fits tightly into an alcove and makes best use of space in a small bathroom. • Double-ended bath – features gracefully sloping ends; ideal for two people. • Slipper bath – slopes at one end giving the user a perfect position for reading and relaxing. • Bateau bath – a deep, freestanding style with a more contemporary finish. POSITIONING YOUR BATH If you are restyling your bathroom, don’t simply put the bath back where it was. Take the time to think about your options. • A fitted bath makes best use of space, but what is the view like? A freestanding bath might give you a view out of a window rather than of the toilet. • Don’t be put off by plumbing. A competent plumber can easily move the waste and water. THE LOGISTICS OF BUYING A BATH • Delivery of your bath will be to your doorstep. Get a timed delivery and make sure you have three or four strong friends on hand to help you move it upstairs. • Take care when choosing a bath that it will go up your staircase and through your bathroom door. • Fit new flooring before installing a freestanding bath, but after a fitted bath.

Chichester double door washstand, 1,240mm, from £1,770, Neptune.

Keep organised John Sims Hilditch, Founder of Neptune (www.neptune.com), says: ‘Always make sure you have ample amounts of storage options to squirrel away your essentials: baskets, storage containers and open shelves will keep everything within easy reach and things that little bit more organised. When arranging the contents of bathroom cabinets, create tiers with wooden blocks so smaller items can be seen at the front and larger items can be set further back so you know what you’ve got.’

Natural oak flooring, from £57 per sq m, The Natural Wood Flooring Company

Peter Keane, Director at The Natural Wood Floor Company (www. naturalwoodfloor.co.uk), says:

Create warmth Nick Duggan, Director at The Radiator Centre (www.theradiatorcentre.com), says: ‘One way to make the bathroom warm and inviting is to install a goodquality heated towel rail. When selecting a towel rail or bathroom radiator, we would always advise customers to avoid chrome radiators, as they do not emit heat as efficiently as coloured or matt finishes. We would also recommend looking at a duel-fuel option. Many towel radiators are also now available with an optional electric heating element, which will ensure you have warm and dry towels even when your central heating is turned off.’

Traditional towel rail, £564.48, The Radiator Centre

Period Homes says... Use specialist bathroom paint on

your walls that is formulated with anti-microbial additives to help resist mildew and has a tough, wipe-clean finish.

Devise a lighting scheme Karen Wallis-Smith, Director at Fritz Fryer (www.fritzfryer.co.uk), says: ‘A bathroom is a multi-use environment so lighting needs to be suitable for both functional tasks, such as shaving or applying make-up, as well as for relaxing in after a long day. Multi layers of light are the best way to achieve this. For example, wall lights next to a mirror are the perfect way to ensure you don’t cast a shadow when standing in front of it, while a dimmer switch, located outside the bathroom, will allow you to reduce the light from a pendant to a relaxing level. ‘Electricity and water do not make good bedfellows so here’s some guidance on how www.periodhomesandinteriors.com

Look after your wood flooring ‘Wood is wonderful for adding texture, warmth and style, but to guarantee the best performance you need to choose the correct type of flooring and look after it. Engineered wood is a much better option than a solid board. This is because the multi-layer core of engineered wood creates an incredibly robust and stable surface, which limits movement. A good-quality sealer is also essential as it will help to protect the wood from reasonable water penetration. Oils give a natural matt finish while a lacquer will add a slight sheen. ‘Avoid leaving wet towels lying on the floor and wipe up any splashes and spills immediately. Regular cleaning is the key to keeping a wooden floor looking its best. Vacuum regularly to remove loose dirt and give the floor an occasional mop with a specialist cleaning product.’

to safely light your bathroom. An IP code is an International Protection marking that indicates a standard of protection against intrusion from factors such as human contact, dust and water. Whether your lights need to be IP rated depends on where you’re going to position them, and specifically how far away from a water source. A bathroom is split up into different lighting zones: zone one is the area above the bath to a height of 2.25m from the floor, and this requires IP65 lighting. Zone two is the area 60cm around the perimeter of the bath or shower and to a height of 2.25m from the floor, which will need IP44 rated lights. Outside of these zones normal household lights can be installed.’

‘From the cut glass around the WC and vanity unit to the stone floor and bespoke lighting, every single element helped to create a bathroom that exceeded the homeowners’ expectations’ Chris O’Halloran, Ripples

W

henever you’re making structural changes, it always pays to utilise every available inch of space. A case in point is this stunning bathroom belonging to Clare and William Robertson. For the first 12 years of living in their converted barn near Lavenham, on the Suffolk/Essex border, the en suite was considerably smaller than what you see today, and the space under the beams was boxed in. When the time came to update the room, the couple decided to knock into the eaves and tear down a stud wall, enlarging the space and allowing an unused area in the bedroom to become a wet room. A ‘ step into the wet room creates a truly separate space without the need to add a dividing wall,’ explains Clare.

Above A Catalano Verso 55 WC, £605.86, Burgbad Crono basin, £1,402.80, and vanity unit, £2,256, are surrounded by bespoke blue-green glass cladding, all from Ripples.

Finishing touches

Left Natural farmed green seashell mosaics, £28 per sheet, from Ripples, provide a striking backdrop for the Tasse bath, £2,999, from BC Designs (www.bcdesigns.co.uk). .

Lighting is integral to the success of this bathroom as there are no windows. Bright task lighting has been used in key areas such as around the wall-mounted vanity unit and in the shower, along with softer mood lighting behind the bath and beneath the vanity unit that is perfect for long, relaxing soaks at night.

DESIGN DETAILS ‘We wanted a look that would be modern without being too stark or blingy to detract from the detailing of the beams,’ explains Clare. Working with a designer at Ripples in Chelmsford, they came up with a scheme that includes bluegreen glass cladding to complement the aqua sea shell mosaic tiles and green slate flooring to contrast with the exposed beams. A very special floorstanding Puravida bath tap by Hansgrohe (www.hansgrohe.co.uk) provides a modern sculptural form in an unusual and attractive chrome and white colour option. n a bid to leave the London rat race, Greg and Paula Patton moved to France for a year. ‘France was too quiet for us, but we didn’t want to move back to London permanently so we rented our house out over there and returned to Wimbledon while we decided where we wanted to live,’ says Paula. Some friends invited the couple down to Whitstable in Kent for the weekend, to look at some houses for themselves. While they were there Greg and Paula took a day trip to nearby Broadstairs. of the car park and immediately saw a house they liked the look of in an estate agent’s window. ‘We viewed it there and then and fell in love instantly. We put in an offer the same day, before we had even seen the beach or town,’ smiles Paula. The house in question was a Victorian villa on the end of a small terrace. ‘It was huge compared to our house in London, with all its original features intact.’ Structurally, the house was sound, but the decor was tired. ‘We wanted to retain the original features, but give it a modern touch.’

blank canvas The couple and their baby son, Josh, moved in to their new house with no furniture except for a blow-up mattress and a travel cot. ‘We had rented our other two houses furnished, so we began in Broadstairs with a blank canvas,’ says Paula. Renovating a six-bedroom house with a baby and another one on the way was a daunting task. But rather than wading straight in, they lived with it the way it was for six months. They began by ripping up the old carpets and sanding the floors. Next they had the walls replastered throughout >> above left Thanks to windows at either end of the living room, walls painted in Downpipe by Farrow & Ball (www.farrow-ball.com) look dramatic without feeling gloomy. ‘The living room is very relaxed; the children can run around and nothing of any value can get broken,’ says

‘We sacrificed a bedroom because we needed a bigger bathroom suitable for a house this size’ and painted the rooms in shades of white. After giving the bay windows a complete overhaul and adding a black and white tiled hallway, they waited for a few years. ‘We needed time to work out the best layout for our growing family.’ After much debate, the kitchen layout was left as it was, but the units were ripped out and replaced with new ones. upstairs, they reconfigured the layout and combined the toilet and bathroom to make one decent-sized family bathroom. ‘We sacrificed a bedroom in the process but we needed a bigger bathroom, suitable for a house this size,’ says Paula. Living through the renovations with two small children was difficult. ‘I remember having to crawl through scaffolding on the landing, carrying a toddler and a baby,’ remembers Paula. ‘i don’t consciously follow trends in interiors, but i never want my home to feel dated either’

S

ue Jones remembers exactly when she and her husband Peter moved into their Hampshire home because it was the day after their first child Lucy turned two years old. Twenty-five years later, and now with four grown-up children, the couple still live here. ‘our home has been through a lot of changes over the years,’ says Sue. ‘When we arrived here, the latest look was swags and tails, but my ideas have really moved on since then. i don’t consciously follow trends, but i never want my home to feel dated either.’

need For change Sue and Peter had started house-hunting when extra space became a priority. Lucy was growing and with a second baby on the way, their cottage was starting to feel cramped. The property that caught Sue’s eye was the larger portion of a substantial Edwardian house, set on the edge

of a pretty new Forest town. it offered plenty of room as well as elegant proportions and attractive period details. Although not to Sue’s taste, the interior was in good condition, and they could move in straight away. Sue and Peter made no major changes until some years later. By then, with four youngsters, the traditional layout was becoming impractical. ‘When the house was split in two after the war, our kitchen was converted from the old butler’s pantry, so it was just a narrow galley,’ Sue explains. ‘We had a separate formal dining room as well, but we needed a more relaxed set-up.’ Sue and Peter decided to extend the kitchen, adding dining space and a utility room, with another bedroom and bathroom above. The old dining room became a second sitting room, which has proved useful as the children have grown up. For the new kitchen, Sue opted for classic, hand-built cabinetry that has stood the www.periodhomesandinteriors.com

‘it’s important to make changes from time to time – i wouldn’t want my home to feel stuck in a rut’ test of time. ‘The furniture was beautifully made, and we’ve taken care of it over nearly 20 years,’ she says. ‘i like to buy things that will last.’ The kitchen units have been repainted twice in that time, with Sue taking the opportunity to give the room a fresh new look each time. Things have not always gone to plan. ‘one time, i was inspired by a photo of some lovely peagreen cabinets. i matched the paint and left the decorator to it,’ she recalls. ‘When i came back, the cupboards were finished, but the kitchen looked hideous! The colour was overwhelming – one shelf would have been enough.’

new lease oF liFe These days Sue tends towards a gentler palette of soft greys and muted greens and blues. vintage pieces blend with the occasional high-street buy and family heirloom. Fresh upholstery has revitalised several chairs and sofas and things are often rearranged or

swapped from one room to another, creating a relaxed, eclectic effect. Many items are secondhand and Sue is an avid trawler of charity shops, auction rooms, car-boot sales and even the local rubbish tip. Furniture, ornate mirrors and decorative chandeliers are among her finds. ‘i favour a homely feel, with a lot of different elements,’ she says. ‘i like faded fabrics, French furniture, old glass, gilt frames and wood. And i absolutely love old metal – the rustier the better.’ She and Peter are a hands-on team. Peter has tackled tiling, adapted pieces of furniture and restored the old chandeliers Sue has unearthed. Sue makes lampshades, paints furniture and has stripped and renovated many of the original wooden floors in the house. ‘Sanding and varnishing the floors was hugely satisfying because the transformation was amazing,’ she says. ‘i think it’s important to make changes from time to time. i wouldn’t want my home feel stuck in a rut. i like to keep moving forward.’ PH www.periodhomesandinteriors.com

iles are the perfect choice for bathrooms. Not only are they hygienic and easy to maintain, but because there are so many designs to choose from – from geometric shapes and hand-drawn bespoke designs to marble effects and screen-printed patterns – it’s possible to guarantee a unique finish. On a practical note, always tile around the sink and bath, even if you don’t extend this from ceiling to floor. I love the idea of relaxing soaks by firelight, but I don’t have a chimney breast in my bathroom. What are my options?

A

Nothing beats the romance of bathing in front of a flickering fire, and it’s easier to achieve than you might think. Some people are fortunate enough to have an existing chimney in the bathroom, but if not a simple addition of a twin-wall flue pipe system such as Stovax’s Professional XQ range can easily facilitate a woodburner within the room. You will, of course, need to

reversible and fits to either side of the window, while locking handles are handed (left and right). These are available with either mortice plates or a hook (if the window is flush to the frame). Q

Can you recommend a traditional compact basin for my cloakroom?

A

We would recommend our Burlington corner cloakroom basin. The octagonal shape is very flexible and can be placed in any period bathroom, whether your home dates from the Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian era. Not only will it fit snugly into any corner, but you also have the option to add a towel rail onto it if you wish, saving on extra wall space being taken up by a handrail. Designed especially for cloakrooms, this space-saving basin is an effortless way to achieve a period look. conform to building regulations for your installation, and if your bathroom is on an upper floor you will also have to think about the length of the flue height available as fires do need a certain distance to create an adequate draw. A HETAS registered installer will be able to give you all of the options available for your home. q&a | expert advice

ASK THE EXPERTS Q

Are fabric blinds suitable for use in bathrooms or will they be prone to mildew?

A

Most blinds are suitable for all room types, but our advice is to consider your bathroom’s usage when choosing which type of blind to opt for. It it’s a large room that doesn’t tend to get too steamy then fabrics can work. For smaller shower rooms that tend to generate a lot of steam it’s better to go for more specialist fabrics. Many roller and pleated blinds, for example, have a moisture-resistant coating applied to them, which means they can easily withstand damp atmospheres in kitchens and bathrooms. Shutters and Venetian blinds are also a practical choice as they are fantastic at withstanding moisture, and they can create a spa-like atmosphere. Jason Peterkin, Clover & Thorne Left Longleat Acacia blind from the Notions Collection, prices for made-to-measure blinds start at £22.50 (0800 012 4613, www.cloverandthorne.co.uk)

Q

I would love a separate shower in my bathroom. What style takes up the minimum amount of floor space?

A

Have you considered a quadrant shower? This practical alternative to the more traditional square or rectangularshaped enclosures is available in a wide range of sizes. The curved tray takes up less room than conventional styles, and will fit snugly into any nook or corner, making it the perfect way to incorporate a spacious shower without compromising on floor space.

Q

Our downstairs cloakroom is rather cold and draughty. A friend mentioned it’s possible to buy heated toilets – is this true?

A

A visit to the bathroom should be a comfortable experience, especially when it’s being used by guests. The Geberit AquaClean Mera toilet is fitted with a proximity sensor, which automatically raises the WC lid and starts warming the seat on the user’s approach. The technology doesn’t end there, as a patented WhirlSpray provides gentle cleaning with warm water for a clean, fresh feeling, and the toilet is fitted with an odour extraction unit to ensure the cloakroom is a pleasant place to be. Raffaela De Vittorio, Marketing Director, Geberit AquaClean Mera shower toilet, from £4,740, Geberit (0800 032 9629, www.geberit-aquaclean.co.uk)

Katrina Hoyle, Head of Group Marketing, Crosswater Design Quadrant single door enclosure, from £619, Crosswater (0345 873 8840 www.crosswater.co.uk)

Q

I am looking for a toilet that is sympathetic to the Victorian era of my home – the only styles I can find are too modern. Can you help?

A

You’re in luck, as I received the details of this gorgeous design in my inbox last week. The Floral decorative patterned toilet from The Remarkable Toilet Company has been faithfully crafted to replicate a traditional style while conforming to modern-day plumbing standards. 108 | Issue Two

The intricate Victorian design features colourful Convolvulus arvensis festooning the exterior and interior of the toilet pan, in jade, cerise, umber and blue hues. Outlined in deep claret, the wild flowers sit perfectly against the ivory background to produce a look that will be second to none in any period setting.
