I trust you have all had a good break, so now it’s back to the grind again with school, work etc. etc.

You may have noticed more and more entries on the Leigh News Facebook group page which is wonderful to see. I initially set this group up as a means of getting the Leigh News out to more people, and it is certainly working. There are 422 followers of this group, and it is there to support the local community, so feel free to use it. There are “lost animal groups” in Winchelsea and Bannockburn, but if your pet goes missing in Inverleigh, Teesdale or Shelford, feel free to list it here as well to get good coverage and hopefully find your missing animals.

The list of people receiving the Leigh News via email is also growing.

A STORY FROM A FIRST FLEET DECENDANT

My name is Barbara Jehu and I’m a first fleet descendant.

The First Fleet consisted of 11 Ships, 1420 Souls, 17,000 Nautical miles, 252 days at sea bound for Botany Bay leaving England 13 May 1787.

My Great x5 Grand parents were convicts on 2 of these ships.

Lydia (also known as Letita) Munro a 17 year old who was originally sentenced at Kingsupon-Thames on 5 April 1787 to death for stealing material, but had this commuted to a 14 year sentence in the weeks prior to the First Fleet sailing. The ship she was transported on was the Prince of Wales which transported only women and was added to the fleet a couple of weeks prior to the fleet sailing to increase the number of women being transported from the original 80 to 150 and then to a final number of 180. This was done for a better balance of numbers of both sexes, the prerequisite was for the women to be young and healthy. Perhaps thought to be good breeding stock for the new settlement? Lydia had skills as a seamstress and was young and healthy so useful in building a new colony. I’m glad the politics of the time suited her selection or I might have a totally different family history.

My Great x5 Grandfather Andrew Goodwin aged 20 was sentenced to 7 years at the Old Bailey on 7 July 1784 for stealing lead from a building site. He was transported on the Scarborough. He had already

served 3½ years on the hulks in the Thames prior to transportation where he had tended market gardens growing food for the prisoners in the hulks. He had 2 brothers who were carpenters so the skills he had and his young age were a good fit for setting up a new colony.

My Great x4 Grand mother is their second child Sarah who was born at Norfolk Island where the couple were sent as a part of a settlement to farm the island and send food back to a starving Sydney Cove in March 1790.

Andrew and Lydia had 11 children and were returned to Hobart to farm in September 1807 on the Porpoise and Norfolk was abandoned until a penal settlement was stared there in 1824.

Andrew and Lydia are both buried at St David’s Park in Hobart near the Salamanca Market.

Lots of very enthusiastic and passionate family members and historians have done a huge amount of research on all aspects of each generation down to the current time and are very willing and happy to share it with other members of the family. There is a bi-annual muster of descendents of Andrew and Lydia organised by some of these keen researchers.

Between 1788 and 1850 the English sent 162,000 convicts to Australia on 806 ships.

The first 11 of these are today known as the First Fleet and contained the convicts and marines who are now acknowledged as the founders of European settlement in Australia. I’m proud to be a First Fleet descendant.

The Friend and Campbell families would like to sincerely thank the many, many individuals, families, local groups and businesses that offered their condolences and help in so many different ways at the time of our dear Skye’s passing. We have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity offered to us. A huge, huge thank you!

We also want to thank those who made donations to the Inverleigh Kindergarten.

The money raised will go towards a musical play area for the children.

“Be alert, not alarmed” was the central theme of the campaign – “Let’s Look Out for Acaustralia” - which was directly supervised by the then Prime Minister, John Howard.

It wasn’t directed at the Fire Season but it could well have been, because that’s exactly whcaat the people of Inverleigh are being asked to do now that we’re into the Fire If you cannot make roster please notify Season. There have already been some significant fires that the Brigade has responded to officer in charge or ring station 5265 1597. in the local area. They weren’t deliberately caused, and it was believed by those present that sufficient precautions had been taken to stop a fire occurring. However under the existing conditions even the most thoughtful planning may not be enough, because it only takes a OfficerInCharge Tanker One Tanker Two spark!

So be alert. Before you start a job ask yourself what the fire risk is and what the 5th February J. Cook G. Guinane possible consequences might be if you use that particular tool. Can the job wait for a day or C. Holman M. Wilson A. Everett two when conditions are better?

So stay alert. If you’re enjoying a walk around one of the river tracks and spot an unattended camp fire, even one that is just smouldering, please ring the CFA straight away!

Solid and liquid fuel barbecues and ovens (including hangis) are also banned during Total Fire Ban Days. The use of chainsaws, plant or grass trimmer or lawn mower should be avoided wherever possible on Total Fire Ban Days because -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-..-.-.-.the risk of starting fires is extremely high and the impact of fire on these days may be much greater. All fires in the open air for burning off grass, scrub, stubble or rubbish are banned during Total Fire Ban Days. It’s simply not worth the risk and not worth the court case and fine.

So let’s all keep safe is year. It can be done and it only requires a little thought and When you are going to burn an awareness of possibilities together with ways to reduce potential hazards to a minimum. please log your burn by ringing We don’t need to be alarmed but we do need to be aware.

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE $120,000 to engage more young people in Golden Plains

Young people in Golden Plains Shire will have more opportunities to actively participate in and connect with their local community through the Andrew Government’s Engage! 2018-20 program.

Cr Helena Kirby, Mayor of Golden Plains Shire Council, says that it will be an amazing opportunity for Golden Plains’ young people to shine.

“Council is delighted for this recognition of our young people.

We have so many driven and passionate youth in Golden Plains and I’m sure they’ll get a lot of benefit out of it.”

“Council is grateful for this investment in our youth; it’s so important for young people in regional areas to have the chance to grow and develop these important life skills outside the school environment.”

Member for Buninyong, Geoff Howard, said $120,000 has been approved for Golden Plans Shire Council for the Connections & Pathway Program.

“The program will engage with young people aged 12 to 25 from the Golden Plains Shire to increase skills, networks and leadership opportunities as a pathway to active par-

ticipation in community and work-life,” Mr Howard said.

“Young people involved will have a key role in developing projects within the program to ensure they have their say in the decisions that affect their lives.

“By working with other young people to gain hands-on experiences, participants will gain confidence and skills which will help them achieve their goals and to become involved in our community,” Mr Howard said.

Engage! supports the Andrews Labor Government’s ongoing commitment to better connect young people with their communities, as outlined in the Youth Policy: Building Stronger Youth Engagement.

The Youth Policy also supports young people to have their say and participate in decision-making on government policy and practices.

107 projects from across the State have shared in $12.3 million as part of the Engage! 2018-20 program.

JAN & FEB 2018 CALENDAR for community members, old and new, to get together to celebrate and make connections. As such, it attracted a Health and Well-being ‘Gem of an Idea’ Grant through the Golden Plains Shire for the first five years, and was free. Since 2016, costs have been met by the Hall Committee, the Progress Association and donations on the day.

The Annual Inverleigh Australia Day Community Breakfast started in 2010. An initiative of the Inverleigh Hall Committee, the breakfast was planned to provide the opportunity

As well as meeting, greeting and eating, people have enjoyed the chance to learn more about their district from displays presented by the Historical Society in the old bluestone building.

Using photos from its collection, as well as photos and items on loan or from members’ own collections, the Historical Society displays have covered topics including floods, sport, WW1, farming, celebrating education and the history of the Hall. In 2017, a community photo competition focusing on the Inverleigh district, created a fine display that helped people to understand that history is

happening now.

The Hall Committee has been helped with cooking, serving and cleaning up over the years by members of the Historical Society, the Inverleigh Progress Association, the Inverleigh Cub Scouts, the Inverleigh CWA and lots of people who have just given a hand.

The birth of the Inverleigh Lawn Bowls Club In the late 1970’s

the Inverleigh district was canvassed as to whether there was support to establish a bowls club.

Following this, many years of fundraising took place in the manner of catering for dances, balls, funerals, birthdays, luncheons, teas, fashion parades, sheep sales, cake stalls and numerous other ways to make a dollar. A public meeting was called and the club formed in 1986.

The work had really started by a small band of dedicated members and others who supported the club in various ways. It took many years to establish a green – setbacks and continual efforts to fundraise were just a reality.

One good thing came out of this- the club opened

debt free, thanks to all the voluntary labour.

The first clubhouse was moved to the site and then renovated, easy to say but another arduous task to complete.

With a green and now a clubhouse we had to make sure of available numbers to play bowls.

Until our numbers increased we played mixed social bowls every Saturday. The highlight of the afternoon was afternoon tea in the clubhouse where many laughs were had and issues

discussed.

Well numbers did increase and a successful grant application allowed a synthetic grass green to be laid in 2008. The work load and worry had been reduced.

This was followed by a new clubhouse 2009, as a result of another successful grant application in conjunction with the football/netball club.

Many pennant matches both ladies and men’s have been played of a Tuesday and Saturday.

Today pennant teams comprise of ladies and men together, in tune with changing times and the equal opportunity act.

We are fortunate to have overhead lighting on the green which enables night matches to be played. Some sponsors choose to have a BBQ and enjoy a social bowl under lights with the members During daylight saving we have a competition between 4 country clubs played at night.

The club’s first pennant win was in 2001/02 a combined ladies team with Drumcondra.

Further pennant wins with mixed teams in 2009- 2014.

GOLDEN PLAINS RURAL WOMEN’S NETWORK

At a recent meeting of the Golden Plains Rural Women’s Network those present asked the most difficult question of themselves and the organisation – should we disband?

– are we no longer relevant?

Reflecting to the history of -The Golden Plains Rural Women’s Network we remember that it was established initially to support rural families during drought conditions. It has since its inception worked to provide opportunities for women and families to connect, share their stories and build stronger communities.

There have been numerous social gatherings utilising excellent speakers to raise funds over the years. A grant from the Geelong Community Foundation was received to run a disability family fun day that provided a wonderful chance for both the disabled children but also their siblings could enjoy the outing.

The mental health of families affected by difficult conditions has been a central focus of the group and to this end training in mental health first aid was arranged in a short course delivered at Hesse Rural Health. Many business operators across the municipality attended and from this training developed very effective strategies to identify and support clients who were experiencing stressful situations and required extra support and understanding to cope.

All of this has been achieved by a very small committee, who welcome new members, that meets on an as needs basis to support the community.

Recently the group recognised that many farmers in the centre of the shire were struggling to maintain water supplies for livestock. Most farm dams were dry and farmers are utilising the various water points throughout the municipality. One of these water points is at Warrambeen where a bore and tank was established during the drought. This has been well used by local farmers but currently the single tank is struggling to keep up with the supply. In conjunction with the Bannockburn Connected Communities and the Shire a second tank was purchased to secure water for dry times and fire.

The committee has resolved to seek expressions of interest in the continuation of the group or, if none is forthcoming at its April 2018 meeting the group will formally

commence the process of winding up its operation.

Our Little Watering Study How has your garden fared in the hot weather? Despite our intentions to get ‘everything’ done in the late spring, there are sections which we didn’t get around to feeding and mulching this year. Two areas don’t yet have their drip watering systems in. Unintentionally, we provided ourselves with the chance to see how different parts have coped with the heat and to assess the impact of feeding, mulching and ground level watering.

I am talking about our home garden, which is on a slope and was a paddock four years ago. It had dreadful soil, lots of clay, compacted areas and hydrophobic areas which didn’t absorb water. There are lots of variables, and this is not a very scientific study, but our observations are interesting, none the less.

We knew that drip watering systems are excellent because plants receive water at the root area where it is needed, can be watered in the cooler parts of the day including at night, and require little effort from us. What is interesting is that our little study proved to us that other gardening practices can enhance a drip system and save you lots of time, water and money.

Here are our findings: 1. Organic materials as food or mulch rot down and improve the water holding capacity and texture of the soil. Older beds with three years of annual manuring and mulching held water better than new beds.

2. Mulching prevents evaporation, keeps roots cool, shades the soil and prevents a hydrophobic crust forming.

3. Watering at the root level is best achieved by a dripper system under the mulch.

This is easiest to install before planting but can be put in later, since roots spread out from the base of the plants.

4. A winter crop of lupins with deep roots helped to improve the soil and its water holding capacity to a notable extent in our small vegetable garden. As the roots rotted, tunnels were created for water to penetrate to a deep level. That garden does not have a drip system but has had two years of lupins. We hand water there only once every couple of weeks or so, except for new plantings or periods of extreme heat.

5. Planting a bed or drip line all at the one time means you can lessen the amount of watering over the whole bed as plants become established at the same time.

Planting ‘same water requirement’ plants in each bed means that all the plants on a drip line have the same needs.

6. A few plants died. Position mattered.

A plant in a partially shaded level spot could do well, while the same species died in a poorly mulched garden on a very sunny slope. Temporary shade with

cloches or covers was helpful.

7. We picked our strawberries before watering them, because when we watered them by hand, they lost taste and texture from absorbing water.

8. Hand watering is affected by wind and is not always easy to direct at the root zone. It is slow and tedious, but does allow the gardener to note what is happening and to cater for young plants which need more water than others nearby.

Conclusions: The time we are spending hand watering the new gardens would be better spent putting in a drip system, feeding and mulching, even though it is summer. To do that, we would have to soak the soil first so that the water from the drips will move through it readily. We would water on the manure and then water on the mulch. Damp soil will encourage worms and other beneficial creatures to break down the organic matter and improve the water holding capacity. Hand watering is only useful for new seedlings, young plants and seeds. We are always learning.

Bannockburn Skate Park lights up The Bannockburn Skate Park will again be up in lights this year during the fourth annual Barwon South West Twilight Skate Park Competition on Thursday 29 March. Council has partnered with the Australia Skate Park League and the YMCA to once again bring this fabulous event to Bannockburn.

Council is currently seeking interest from volunteers to assist with the event planning. Each year a group of young people form a team to help with the organising and running of the annual event.

Volunteers will be mentored by professionals in the skate industry while developing skills in event management, photography, sponsorship, promotion and judging. Previous participants have utilised the voluntary opportunity to do a school project or achieve a community service award.

The eight week program, called ‘Tracks’, will begin Thursday 8 February 6.00pm – 7.30pm at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre. Planning meetings will be held each Thursday leading up to the event.

The Barwon South West Twilight Skate Park Competition will be held on Thursday 29 March from 4.30pm – 9pm at the Bannockburn Skate Park.

ALL WELCOME - BOWLS AVAILABLE Have you ever wondered what it’s like?

Leave your white trousers (and shoes) at home – this once very English sport is becoming more and more popular in our community.

Lawn bowls is the latest sport with a somewhat stuffy reputation to get an informal makeover. Barefoot bowls is an Australian spin on the traditional game, with added music, drinking and chatting – and, as the name implies, minus the shoes.

It isn’t just a bit of fun. We hope to change perceptions of the sport and highlight the fact that small bowling greens such as Inverleigh struggle to compete against the larger Geelong teams uness we can find new members. Most clubs in Geelong and the surrounding district pull in member numbers ranging from 80 to 500. Our little club has 28 members.

Of our 3 Pennant teams, 2 are currently in the top 4 for Geelong and district and look like competing in finals.

The 3rd term on a Tuesday is a development team for new bowlers. It is generally accepted that this is quite an achievement for such a small club.

Check out the montage below and come along on the 2nd and 4th Friday Nights of the month at 6pm. There are Bowls available if you don’t have any and plenty of players eager to show you how to bowl. There are also Jack Attack Bowls for the children.

A New Pet In The Family

While a new puppy or kitten joining the family is an exciting time, there is a lot to consider in order to care for your new addition. There are vaccinations, worm and flea products to give and microchip registration details to be sorted.

In this newletter our aim is to assist you in setting up a healthcare programme for your pet.

New Puppy Checklist Horses have evolved to cope with cold weather much better than they are equipped to cope with extreme heat.

Below are a few tips to keep your horse cool during the hot weather and avoid heat stress: Avoid riding or strenuous exercise during the hottest period of the day.

Avoid exercising your horse on nongrassed outdoor areas.

Shade is needed to allow your horse to regulate their body temperature.

Hosing a horse will help cool them down. However, you must scrape off the excess water after hosing.

Leaving a layer of water on their skin provides insulation, causing their skin temperature to rise.

Do not drape wet towels over the head and neck. They can trap heat in rather than allowing it to escape.

Your horse is bound to sweat during the hot days, so access to a salt lick is a great way to top up their salt levels.

Horses with no pigment around their eyes should be covered by fly veils.

Provide adequate cool, clean water.

Signs of heat stress in horses include rapid breathing, flared nostril, agitation and a staggery gait.

If you believe your horse is suffering from heat stress contact the clinic immediately.

Vaccinations What do you need to vaccinate against?

• Parvovirus - a highly contagious viral gastroenteritis.

Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, depression.

Death can occur very quickly.

• Distemper - a highly contagious disease producing symptoms such as conjunctivitis, nasal discharge, and convulsive seizures • Hepatitis - in puppies can cause sudden death, whilst adult dogs experience fever, weakness, diarrhoea, loss of appetite • Canine Cough - a disease caused by bacterium and a virus. Affected dogs will have a persistent cough We recommend the following core vaccination schedule.

• 1st vaccination C3 6-8 weeks • 2nd vaccination C5 10-12 weeks • 3rd vaccination C5 14-16 weeks Vaccinations require an annual booster. We will send you a reminder when this vaccination is due.

Intestinal Worming -

Allwormers need to cover Roundworm, Hookworm, Whipworm, Flea Tapeworm and Hydatid Tapeworm.

Puppies need worming every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age then every month until 6 months of age. Regular worming should then be given every 3 months for your dogs life.

Heartworm -

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes. It is easily prevented, yet if contracted is usually fatal. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, tires easily and fainting.

We recommend the annual heartworm injection. This eliminates the risk of monthly treatments being forgotten or given late.

We recommend the following vaccination schedule.

• 1st Proheart vaccination 12 weeks • 2nd Proheart vaccination 6 months Boosters given yearly with your dogs C5 vaccination.

Flea And Tick Control -

We recommend Simparica for the treatment of flea infestations and the control of ticks.

Simparica is also for the treatment of ear mites, demodex mites and sarcoptic mange.

Simparica is safe for use in puppies from 8 weeks of age. It is a flavoured chew that is given once a month.

Desexing -

Desexed dogs are less likely to fight with other dogs or to try to escape and roam.

They generally have fewer health problems, especially uterine infections and mammary

Microchipping -

Microchipping can be done in a consult with our vets. A microchip is a tiny computer chip the size of a grain of rice which has an identification number programmed into it. The microchip number is recorded on a microchip database registry with details about the animal and owner contact details.

It is very important to keep your contact details up to date. If you require any help updating your information our nurses will be happy to help.

All dogs over three months of age must be registered with council. Discounts apply for desexed and microchipped dogs.

Vaccination What we need to vaccinate against.

• Feline Enteritis a potentially deadly disease causing vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, high fever and depression.

• Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis symptoms may include sneezing, nasal discharge and inflamation of the eyes.

• Feline Calicivirus symptoms present themselves suddenly include eye discharge, nasal discharge, ulcers on nose and tongue and pneumonia.

• Feline Chlamydiosis upper respiratory tract symptoms include sneezing, coughing, runny nose and fever.

We recommend the following core vaccination schedule.

1st vaccination F3 6-8 weeks 2nd vaccination F4 10-12 weeks 3rd vaccination F4 14-16 weeks Vaccinations require an annual booster. We will send you a reminder when this vaccination is due.

Cats may also be vaccinated against the Feline Leukaemia Virus FELV and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus FIV.

Intestinal Worming -

The most common intestinal worms affecting cats are roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm, Worms are a common cause of ill health and can result in loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Kittens need to be wormed every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months of age . After 6 months of age all cats need to be wormed every 3 months for effective protection.

Heartworm and Flea Control -

Puppy School is held at the clinic on Tuesday night.

Class Times are as follows: 6pm - 7pm 7pm - 8pm Dog Training is held at the clinic on Saturday mornings.

Mosquitoes spread heartworm when they bite. A cat affected by heartworm will have an infestation of long thin worms lodged in the heart vessels. Cats develop breathing signs that can look like chronic asthma and vomiting. There is no approved treatment for heartworm in cats. Revolution provides protection against the following in cats.

• Fleas • Heartworm • Ear Mites • Hookworm / Roundworm • Lice Revolution is safe for kittens from 6 weeks of age.

Microchipping -

The microchipping procedures for your kitten are the same as for your puppy.

If your kitten likes to wander, escapes during a party or bolts after hearing fire works having a microchip is vital.

All kitten over 3 months of age must be registered with the council.

Desexing -

Cats are efficient breeders. Females continue to come into season until they are mated. Cats can start to become sexually mature from 4-6 months of age.

Desexing minimises the chance of your female cat developing reproductive organ related issues. Desexing male cats help prevent injury from fighting and urine spraying.

It is important to desex your cat at an early age to reduce the number of unwanted kitten.

We recommend desexing between 4 - 6 months.

ST PAUL’S ANGLICAN CHURCH ~ INVERLEIGH

We’re starting another year. For many, it’s always a reflective time; a time for taking stock of what we’re doing with our life.

Humans have always marked time by significant events. The real question is not whether we will mark time, but how we will do so.

For Christians time is intended to be a teacher, presenting us with opportunities and invitations to demonstrate our faith.

The God who created time, now gives us time as a gift. Time becomes a field of choice wherein we can experience true happiness and find real freedom. We can begin to participate in God’s plan to recreate the entire cosmos in and through Jesus Christ.

Time is the road along which this plan of redemption proceeds in our individual lives and in the history of this world.

So, how do we view time?

There is a beginning and an end, a fulfilment, which is a new beginning. Church time is marked by the great events of the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

We remember them, and engage with them, so that we have models for our journey of life.

There really is a Divine design. Every morning invites us to begin again. The very structure of the 24 hour cycle of each day reveals the goodness of a God who always invites us - and empowers us - to begin again. Hope is reborn with every sunrise.

Every evening invites our honest reflection, expression of gratitude to Him who gave us life, regret for where we fell short, new choices to change our life and the healing, rejuvenating rest which awaits all who believe in Him.

Time is meant to change us. It invites us into a deeper walk with God and with one another. But it’s up to us to respond to the lessons of time and the invitation of faith.

Life is a classroom for those who are willing to learn its many lessons - and faith opens our eyes and shows us the way.

For example: Time is for actively participating in God’s creation. Our use of time is meant to bear results.

As Jesus said,

“It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, …….This I command you: love one another.”

When we live this kind of life, Jesus can find a home within us from which He then continues His mission, in time.

There’s a Latin phrase “Carpe Diem”, which literally means “Seize the day.” For Christians, that phrase can take on a whole new meaning.

Almost two thousand years ago the ancient Greek writer, Seneca, wrote: “It is not that we have so little time, but that we have wasted so much of it” Later in time St. Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus: “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men (and women) but as wise making the most of the time.”

As we consider the timeline of God’s unfolding plan, He who gives and governs time, invites us to re-commit ourselves to living differently, in time.

We’re invited in this New Year to live as though time really does matter. We’re invited to give ourselves away for others; to imitate Jesus who gave Himself for the entire human race, and to be generous about it. If we live life this way we have the capacity to change the world, and that’s not a bad start for the New Year!
