VISA CRACKDOWN BEGINS I
mmigration authorities nationwide are resurrecting a 2006 rule forbidding foreigners from obtaining back-to-back 15- or 30day visas at Thai border posts. The renewed policy seems designed to weed out people living in Thailand by making regular trips to the border to obtain another two weeks or onemonth stay. However, there is no suggestion that visitors with a prior, valid visa issued by a Thai embassy or consulate will have a problem by entering Thailand through a walk-in checkpoint. Scores of people have been stranded over the past week at Thai border posts, especially Mae Sot and Ranong, after Immigration officers warned them that if they proceeded into Myanmar they would not be allowed to return to Thailand without a valid visa issued by a Thai embassy. There is no Thai embassy at these border points. However, Pattaya Today has learned that the new strict policy also is being implemented spasmodically at some other border crossings, including those linking Thailand and Cambodia. Immigration officials say that genuine tourists can still go to a border post to obtain a 15- or 30day stamp on arrival–at least once– but must provide evidence of their address in Thailand which officers say they can check quickly through their updated computers. But such visitors may well be quizzed about what they are doing in Thailand to ensure they are “proper” tourists. Thai Immigration has long suspected
that some foreigners doing backto-back border runs are working illegally or are involved in crimes such as credit card scamming. Visitors recently returned from border posts say that Immigration officers are scanning passports for evidence of back-to-back visa runs by those who do not hold an authorized
60-day tourist visa or a 90-day or one-year non-immigrant visa. The argument is that the 15- and 30-day stamps-on-arrival are not meant to be used by visitors living long-term in Thailand; they are designed for short-term vacationers only. Foreigners about whom Immigration officers are suspicious
are being advised to obtain 60- or 90-day visas at a Thai embassy or consulate before coming back to Thailand. Alternatively, they can usually arrive in the country by air and obtain a 15- or 30-day stamp on arrival–depending on their country of origin–without any current restrictions. Further bureaucratic
moves are expected in August, although it is not clear if they will seek to restrict the number of times people can enter Thailand through an airport. Already, a small number of tourists have been quizzed at Phuket airport why they come to Thailand so often. Continued on page 4

News Police chief issues warning
Colonel Supachai Puikaewkam, superintendent of Pattaya police station, has acknowledged that robberies on supermarkets, banks, gold shops and ATMs remain a big threat to public security and finances. He said he was particularly concerned that
attacks on ATMs were on the rise, especially those involving the use of explosives to gain access to the cash inside. Supachai urged banks to liaise with his officers about vulnerable ATMs, especially in unlit areas, so that the proper precautions could be taken.
Ladyboys trick Police seize 10,000 Indian tourists yaba capsules
Four Indian nationals walking on Beach Road were approached and groped by several transvestites offering s e x f o r m o n e y. D u r i n g the unwelcome embraces, each of the Indians lost an

Rape follows karaoke visit
A woman who was accompanied on a night out by her female friend and a young man was savagely raped on deserted land later that night. Called Pa, the 21-year-old woman told investigators that her male escort, Na, offered her a ride home after their evening
at a karaoke bar. He told her that he had to go first to his brother’s house, but this turned out to be a ruse. The man took her to a wooded area where he raped her. Police found evidence of a struggle at the location. Na has fled the area and is being sought by police.
Woman killed on motorbike
The female passenger on a motorbike was killed when the bike collided with a minivan on Central Road. The pillion passenger, 22-year-old Waraporn Hotaisong, was killed instantly. The driver of the minivan, Komsan Saiboonmee, said he was

Chonburi Police captured two drug dealers with a stash of some 10,000 yaba tablets and 34 grams of crystal meth. Wannapong Thammachat, 23, and Prasertsit Hansamuer, 20, were reportedly caught in their downtown Pattaya hotel while loading the drugs into
suitcases, assumedly en route to distributers. During their investigation, police learned that the alleged drug dealers also were working with an inmate in Pattaya Remand Prison—a man who had a drug-clientele base in Khon Kaen.

Mae Sot border post
Some commentators have expressed surprise that Thailand should have chosen this moment, when tourist numbers are sluggish because of the political troubles in Bangkok, to restrict entry through border posts. But others point to the need for the country to monitor visitors more closely in the run-up to the ASEAN Economic Community which formally begins at the end of next year. Nonetheless, the sudden appearance of the new restrictions has caught many by surprise and led to them going into an overstay situation when they are left bewildered at a border post.

Wife suspected of stabbing husband
Racing champion shot dead
Police have not determined why Thanaporn Phandontree, a 24-year-old man known locally as Super Benz, was shot to death by four gunmen on Jomtien beach road. The drift racer had had a colorful career in Pattaya but is thought to
have made enemies in both his personal and business life. Bystanders said Thanaporn was shot as he stepped out of a car. Police speculate that the gang of assassins had been following him for some time waiting for a suitable opportunity.
Customer paid with fake banknote
A Norwegian couple staying at a Central Pattaya hotel had a furious argument which led to the husband being seriously injured. Staff saw Frode Pedersen, 43, emerge from a lift clutching his chest and neck which had deep wounds. He was rushed to Pattaya Memorial Hospital where he was said to be stable. Police found his wife in the couple’s room and believe she may have been the attacker. However, she was inebriated, so investigators delayed questioning until she sobered up. Bloodstained scissors were found in the room.

There’s a new toque in town and he is inspiring his kitchen crew at the Infiniti Restaurant in the 5-star Sheraton Pattaya Resort which grandly sits nestled on the cliff headlands south of Pattaya. Sweeping views of the Gulf of Siam and the near lying islands make for dramatic panoramas which together with the luxurious accommodation and world-class gastronomy create a lush oasis of abundance. Chef Jack Yoss hails from another fun city, Las Vegas, Nevada, where his romance with the culinary arts began at an early age. He reminisces, “I remember watching my father cook all our family meals. Looking back it was his passion for cooking the simplest of things that instilled my love for cuisine and put me on the path I currently take.” Following this call to cook and armed with passion and enthusiasm he eventually advanced as a saucier at the famous Wolfgang Puck’s exclusive Chinois—the sinceclosed restaurant in Caesar’s Palace--before moving on to San Francisco. Looking to fulfill his dream of travelling the world and experiencing different cuisines he began searching for job opportunities overseas. In 2011, Yoss attained the coveted position of chef de cuisine at the pan-Asian restaurant Starfish Bloo in Indonesia’s first W property, W Retreat & Spa in Seminyak, Bali. Married with a two-year-old daughter he
now enjoys leading his culinary team into new gastronomic directions and enjoys every minute. He stated that he is simply grateful and proud to have made a successful career out of something he loves to do. “Working for passion is not something everyone is able to do, so for me to wake up every morning and love what I do is quite amazing”. Mick and I were fortunate to enjoy chef Jack’s cuisine recently and to even receive a personal master class in his kitchen where he demonstrated his indubitable skills while chatting and even involving us in his interactive cookery demonstration. Good solid ingredients without pretensions and if possible locally sourced ingredients are top priorities for chef Jack who describes his signature cuisine as “global contemporary”.

The deVine Wine Club dinner at The Royal Cliff Hotel Wining & Dining Supremo Quite honestly it doesn’t get much better than a deVine Wine Club dinner in the Grill Room at the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel. If you enjoy tasting fine wines accompanied by the finest cuisine these events are right up your soi. Details on how to join are at the bottom of this article. These prestigious deVine Wine Club soirees are held on a regular basis and are always eagerly awaited and keenly attended. The club was launched in April 2001 as the visible face of the resort’s enthusiasm and passion for promoting wines and
hosting vini-cultural events. Always graciously presided over by Panga Vathanakul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group these occasions are carefully sourced and over the years have presented some of the finest wine houses in the world. The latest was no exception as it showcased the wines from Miguel Torres, “The Wine King of Spain”. The experience began at 6:30 p.m. with tapas and an introductory glass of Mas Rabell White D.O. it proved an elegant first tasting to set the scene in anticipation of the 6-course pageant of cuisine to come. Executive Chef Walter Thenisch was on hand to greet and meet and the atmosphere was palpable with Pattaya’s discerning bon vivants and oenophiles eagerly awaiting this culinary celebration of the finest cuisine and top Spanish wines. Export manager from Miguel Torres, Gabriel Fernandez Bosch, hosted the event and launched the evening with an interesting preface of the wines to come followed swiftly by the serving of the pre-appetizer course. White asparagus, Iberico ham, avocado tartare laden with foie gras set the tone for the evening with this extravaganza of lavish flavors. Iberico ham is the treasure of Spanish cuisine. Its unique taste, created in part by the aroma of sweet acorns that the pigs feed on, deserves its place alongside the gastronomic trinity of caviar, truffles and Champagne. Offset by the asparagus and subtle avocado tartare it was superb but with the added addition of substantial pieces of foie gras it become ambrosial. Combined with the first pouring of the evening a Vina Esmeralda D.O. Catalunya 2012, we were all in the happy valley of excess. Blended from Moscatel and Gewurtztraminer grapes grown
in the mountainous area of the Upper Penedes the wine displayed an exceptionally delicate balance and striking fragrance. The next vintage was a Vina Sol D.O. Catalunya 2012. This popular light white from Torres recently celebrated its 50th year with the release of this vintage. Sunshine in a glass it was crisp, light and fruity with a low alcohol content (10.5 percent) which suits sunny climes and summer parties it was the perfect companion to the tiger prawns with lemon and garlic. Displaying the professional expertise of the catering skills of the Royal Cliff, 200 guests were served this course with the prawn (as far as we know – we couldn’t question everyone) arriving in its most textbook texture; drizzled with wood-smoked extra virgin olive oil it was another star dish. Thyme crusted loin of lamb served with grilled vegetables, crisp potato tart and a thyme scented jus arrived under copper cloches and on the command of “one, two, three” was revealed in all their glory. Escorted by a Coronos D.O. Catalunya 2011 described as “The King of Tempranillo” is was a glorious marriage. The Torres family has been making this wine for more than 100 years combining the varietals of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon and can now be recognized as the undisputed champions. The next course showcased the queen of Spanish cheeses, Manchego, from the La Mancha region. Made from authentic Manchego sheep’s milk it is one of Spain’s most popular cheeses. The pairing with this course was an Atrium Cabernet Sauvignon D.O. Penedes 2007. This is the emperor of the red varieties, originally from Bordeaux; it is cultivated in the upper and central Penedes vineyards

and proved the ideal companion to the firm, nutty tasting cheese. For a dessert finale a trio of sweet confections were served, a cherry almond tart, Catalan crème brûlée and an orange red wine sorbet creatively presented in a dark chocolate shell. Beautifully constructed all and perfect textural companions they made for a luscious culinary climax. The chosen wine to complement this concluding course was a San Valentin Parellada D.O. Catalunya 2011. The Parellada grape has a strong reputation for producing fruity, aromatic wines with moderate alcoholic strength. Celebrated chef at Pullman Pattaya Hotel G Pullman Pattaya invited Hervé Frerard, the world renowned chef, to present his extraordinary cuisine at their Beach Club restaurant recently to the delight of guests and visitors. For two nights only he wowed his diners with his contemporary French cuisine presenting a distinguished three-course set dinner with a price tag of only B.790. Chef Hervé’s reputation precedes him and his list of culinary accomplishments is outstanding. During his career he has been privileged to cook for the Thai Royal Family, Queen Elizabeth II and served as French President Francois Mitterrand’s personal chef. With such a pedigree it was with huge expectations that we gathered in the Beach Club restaurant for a tasting menu of chef’s dishes. The evening commenced with a pre-starter of encornet (squid) filled with pork belly and chorizo served with marinated bell peppers
and “espelette” tomato syrup. The “espelette” pepper is a variety of chili pepper that is cultivated in the Basque region of France. It’s rich, robust kick married beautifully with the tomato syrup and the tender squid packed with minced pork with the spiciness from the paprika laden chorizo providing a wonderful textural warmth; it proved a stellar dish. Paired with a Cape Zebra Chenin Blanc from South Africa the union was delightful. The next starter to appear was an extraordinary concoction of slowcooked duck egg, white asparagus puree, espuma mustard and a bread crisp. This dish was completely decadent. The duck egg had been slow cooked for two hours at a temperature of 61 degrees which resulted in a creamy custard texture which escorted by the luxurious white asparagus puree and silky mustard espuma produced a lushly
rich sensation. Accompanied by an excellent Stable Hill Chardonnay, which admirably cut through the intensity, it was yet another star dish. Next up was pan seared sole (Dover) with a langoustine cream sauce. With the fervor of lobster bisque the concentrated flavor of the sauce somehow managed to harmonize the delicacy of the celebrated fish. Served with more of the Stable Hill Chardonnay the table was silent as we all fully appreciated the superiority of the food we were being served. It was now the turn of the main course to cause another sensation. Plancha of beef short loin, Ratte potato purée and red wine juice was the description on the menu card. Beef short loin is where we get many of the most desirable cuts of meat including T-bone and Porterhouse steaks as well as strip loin. Chef had cooked the beef “sous vide” (slow
and low in a water bath) resulting in the most tender meat imaginable. Cut with forensic precision the tranche was smothered in a dark chocolate colored red wine jus which was explosively flavorful and luscious. The potato puree held its own with its unique nutty, buttery texture coming from the heirloom French Ratte potatoes. The pairing for this course was a Colombelle, Cotes de Gascogne. A ménage a trois of grape varieties (Tannat, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) which, with its powerful tannins, boldly accompanied this commanding dish. There had been a buzz all evening concerning the pastry desserts to conclude the degustation. When they were presented the reaction was palpable, a vanilla millefeuille rested elegantly against a scoop of salted caramel ice cream while a slice of baked apple tart accompanied by red wine jelly was served with vanilla ice cream. If you have never tasted salted caramel ice cream you need to put that right immediately! The flavor is exceptional the salt adding yet another element to the expected sweetness. The baked apple tart was also ambrosial and the mille-feuille delightful. I’m running out of superlatives for this outstanding gastronomic

Salmon sashimi with green mango, mint, Asian pear and Sanbaizu sauce headed the tasting menu. The salmon was fatty, marbled sushi grade and absolutely superb, offset by the tart mango, juicy pear and sauce of vinegar, soy sauce and mirin it was a quick road to heaven. A scallop dish followed. Jack had briskly caramelized the chubby U.S. scallops and accompanied them with an oyster and crab meat chowder sauce learnt from his father Elvis all those years ago in Las Vegas. Anointed with a few tears of curry oil it was a standout dish of distinction. Hot rock cooking at table is a preparation that Yoss will introduce
into the repertoire of the hotel's cuisine. The hot rock (actually a steel puck) is rested atop a dish of white stones, star anise, cinnamon bark and pepper corns which generate an exquisite smoky aromatic aroma. Place your sashimi-cut New Zealand lamb onto the sizzling puck for no time at all and then dip into the miso, rosemary, sesame oil and lemon sauce for the most delectable of taste sensations producing, for us, a fascinating new taste. A sensational dish which packs a visual and olfactory punch. This was followed by butterfish with pumpkin, Japanese style pickles and Parma ham sauce. The butterfish had been flash
fried and placed in the oven while the mini pickles and sauce were prepared. Butterfish is known by many names including black cod and sometimes snow fish. With its beautiful snow white flesh, rich succulent flavor and velvety texture it is a joy to watch being cooked and of course, to eat! Accompanied by the home made pickles and Parma sauce the umami sensation exploded in the mouth and we found ourselves eating this amazing dish with raised eyebrows! The penultimate course involved breast of duck but with chef Jack’s zhoosh it was served with a swirl of cauliflower puree and asparagus,
brown butter, raisins and almonds for a sweet-savory pastiche. If you’re not salivating already – we have the dessert to come. Rounding off all these superb dishes we were then served a salted caramel budino with chocolate cookie crumbles. Budino is Italian custard but this version was intriguingly made with a salty caramel topped with a crumble of chocolate cookies. Decadent, delicious and dastardly good it showcased chef Jack’s penchant for desserts and superbly brought our tasting menu to the sweetest ending! All the above dishes are now on the menu at Infiniti and we urge

If one identical twin is diagnosed with autism, the other twin has about a 90 percent chance of developing an autistic disorder. There is no blood test, no scan, and no image that can detect autism. Diagnosis relies on behavioral observation and screening. Mutations on chromosome 16 have been tied to autism. The glitch is in a DNA region that contains “morpheus” genes, or genes which historically have changed very rapidly as humans evolved. In other words, the same process that helped evolve human intelligence may be a contributing factor in autism.
Japanese women live longer than women in any other country. Their longevity is attributed to a healthy diet — including green tea and raw fish; excluding bread and dairy. They live to an average of 86.4 years, considerably older than British women at 82.7 years and even the famously-healthy Italians at 84.4, with their extolled Mediterranean diet.

2. Listen to What Your Body is Saying Most often you’ll know when you have been overdoing it, as your own body will soon let you know. When you find yourself feeling absolutely shattered or simply struggle with aches & pains, then do not ignore what your body is telling you and ease up on your training routine. Any training plan needs to be flexible and you need to remember that it is important that on some days you will feel tired, and yet energized on other days. You should make sure that you follow every hard day with a rest day or much lighter training. 3. Ensure You Eat Well Simply put, your body only gives out what you put in to it and no more.
If you need your body to perform at its peak and be free from injury whilst both training & racing, then it’s vital you ensure your body has all the food you need to keep it running. If you don’t know what your body needs in terms of “fuel” then seek the advice of a dietician, as we all have different food requirements. 4. Drink Plenty of Water The correct hydration is essential when it comes to good body maintenance. Hydration becomes even more crucial when training hard with your body, if not your workouts will suffer. Having the correct hydration aids greatly with post workout recovery, and it also stops your body from overheating, as well as detoxifying it by removing impurities and toxins by flushing them from your body. You need to ensure that any water you lose whilst training is replenished straight afterwards. 5. Cross Train as well as Running Obviously the best way to be faster and stronger at running is simply to run often and far, but don’t let running be your only pre-race training. Ensure that you cross train at least twice a week by doing low impact aerobic workouts to exercise well and avoid injury at the same time. Cross training like this improves your overall fitness, giving your body an overall rest from all that running. Some of the ideal cross training options you can try are cycling, swimming, and weight training, with Pilates and yoga being good alternatives to aid with relaxation at the same time. 6. Start a Training Routine and Stick to It Set up the correct training regime by taking advice from running guides, using the services of a personal trainer, or a running coach. Your ideal training regime needs to be tailored to your own race needs, as a routine that can work for one person may not work for another. This is because we all have different medical and sporting histories. 7. Invest in Proper Sports Clothing and Shoes Running is recognized as one of the cheapest sports to get started in, but it’s essential that you buy the right training shoes to minimize injuries and improve your performance. If you’ve not already invested in good running shoes then go to a specialty running shop to buy one. There are trained staffs in these specialty shops who will look at your feet, your gait and stride pattern, as well as find out your running aspirations and he/she will recommend the appropriate running shoes that best fits your needs. Another sports equipment that you should invest on is a high-quality sports bra, as you’re likely to run several miles every day. A sports bra will lend you the support that is required to avoid any soreness or discomfort that lots of running may cause. Can chelation therapy really get rid of metals? Most people nowadays, particularly young people, live a healthy lifestyle, and new products and treatments are constantly being developed in response to people adopting this lifestyle change. With the aid of science and technology, more and more health innovations are now available. One of the most beneficial among these is chelation therapy. As discussed in my previous article, by Dr. Natnicha Loichuen chelation therapy works by the use of compounds capable of binding to metals present in toxic concentrations so they can be removed from the body. For those unfamiliar with this process, the question goes, “Can chelation therapy really get rid of metals, and where do these metals come from?” These undesirable ionic materials or metals build up inside our bodies as a result of our day-to-day activities, such as eating. In excess amounts, these chemicals can cause hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and accelerated aging— making us appear older than our years. Simply put, chelation therapy is like a claw that grabs and eventually removes certain harmful substances from our systems. An amino acid complex called EDTA (ethylenediamine-tetra-acetic acid), or chelating agent, comes in contact with certain positively charged metals and other substances-such as zinc, mercury, lead, iron, copper, calcium, magnesium, plutonium and manganese--and excretes them from the body. The introduction of this chelating agent to the body can be done either intravenously (IV) or orally. In IV form, the EDTA – a mixture of amino acid, vitamins and minerals – is combined with normal saline solution. The IV can be injected through the arm, wrist, or back of the hand. It takes about 2-3 hours to complete the process. There is not much restriction with this method as you can watch TV, read a book or listen to music during the process, following which you can immediately resume normal activities. EDTA plays an important role in removing undesirable metals like lead and arsenic which, when left over in the tissues and blood-vessel walls, can cause inflammation, thwart the flow of blood and nutrients and eventually leading to heart disease, high blood pressure, and degenerative disease.
Chelation therapy is recommended for those at risk for: - constriction or narrowing of blood vessels - high blood pressure - lack of blood to a muscle - diabetes - insomnia/fatigue - excessive amounts of poison and metals in body - smoking or excessive drinking - unhealthy eating lifestyle How often should you have chelation therapy? The amount of chelation therapy depends on the nature of the problem and response to the medication. For example, people with vasoconstriction would normally need chelation treatment once a week for about 20 weeks. What do you need to do before and during chelation therapy? - Before you get the treatment, it is very important to consult a physician and have your blood checked, particularly creatinine levels to determine your kidney function. - Drink plenty of water, as your kidneys will work harder eliminating harmful substances from your body. What do you need to do after chelation therapy? - Drink lots of water, at least two liters per day for three consecutive days after the therapy to help eliminate harmful substances from your body through urine. - Get enough sleep, about 6-8 hours, as you might feel tired. - You may continue taking vitamin and mineral supplements and medications prescribed by your doctor. - If you have headache or you feel dizzy, eat nutritious food or drink juice to relieve symptoms. If not, see a doctor.
- Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. - Avoid eating food containing artificial food coloring and seafood, which may be contaminated with lead. For anyone interested in chelation therapy, book a FREE consultation now.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” Margaret Lee Runbeck’s definition of happiness is, “Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” Getting older can bring a renewed sense of happiness and wellbeing, despite physical and mental declines, researchers report in the American Journal of Psychiatry. For me, happiness is a decision. Your happiness is your decision to make. Getting older can make you feel happier if you know how to manage everyday life. There are some recommended ways to make life enjoyable for seniors.
1. Give Your Life a Purpose Everyone needs a purpose, no matter how old they are, something to make getting out of bed in the morning worthwhile. What do you plan to do with the rest of your life? Find something that invigorates and interests you and pursue it. This is how you keep yourself and your brain young and vital. It can get you out of the house and you may even make some new friends. 2. Assist Others It is a fact that whenever we help others we will feel happier. Lots of people spent most of the time working while they were young. No time to care for others. Retirement is a great opportunity to apply your passions, strengths and values, to help others and make you feel good. Do what makes you feel good. Help others as a volunteer at a school, church or hospital. That alone could add value and meaning to your life. 3. Do Something Nice We all know that being a good person could make you feel
happy. That’s why people enjoy doing something nice for people. Whether it’s a small act of courtesy you perform for a stranger or a gift of your time or service to a friend, enjoy the glow that comes in the action’s aftermath. Try to do something nice for someone every day. It will give you something to think about besides yourself. 4. Accept Your Limitations It can be frustrating not having the physical strength or income you once had. Learn to understand and accept the fact of life that everybody gets old, so enjoy and make the most out of your present situation. Part of being happy is learning to accept your limitations. Think of all the big success stories of athletes who lost their careers due to accidents or injuries and went on to become businessmen, inventors, entertainers. Accept your limitations and get on with it. If one door closes, open another. Changing course and taking a new direction keeps life interesting. 5. Spend Time with People You Like Spend as much time as you can with people you like, people who make you happy. It’s good for your body, your brain, and your emotional stability. Statistics have shown that good relationships promote long life. Keep your friends and family members close and plan fun times together. 6. Do What You Like to Do What makes you happy? What do you like to do? Whatever it is, spend as much time as you can doing it. If you love dancing, dance. If you love painting, paint. Maybe you haven’t had time in the past to indulge yourself this way, but now you do, so go for it. Remind yourself what you used to love doing and start doing it again. 7. Happiness Begins Inside You Happiness doesn’t depend on external circumstances, it begins inside ourselves. Have you ever met someone who was chronically ill, or broke, or bereaved, and yet they always seem happy? They have discovered the true secret of happiness, which is that it has to begin inside, or it doesn’t begin at all. Ask yourself: What would I miss most about today if I lost it all tomorrow?

Then start being grateful for and appreciating it. And every night write down three things for which you are grateful. 8. Exercise Research shows that exercise is as effective as anti-depressants for people with depression. Exercise also reduces stress, boosts confidence and improves sleep. Exercise is good for the elderly too. If you keep yourself healthy inside your body, your soul will be happy as well. Remember, “Happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” No matter how old you are, you can be happy and feel great in everyday life if you wish to be. Nobody could make you feel happy if you do not want to. So start each new day with positive thoughts, gratitude, and a good attitude toward yourself and others. That’s how to make your life happy and peaceful.

Achtung Nein! Not the Baby-Benz. It's the new A-Class My first A-Class drive was more than a decade ago. That metallic silver grey, compact A-Class, aka Baby Benz, was visually a by John K. Lindgren challenge. Most of Editor-in-chief: us had never seen carsanook.com a Benz like that. “A-Class? Is that a Mercedes Benz you’re driving?” However, it was impeccably engineered. Good drive. In 2013 followed by the MB global tagline, “the pulse of a new generation,” the all-new A-Class arrived looking like a vehicle from a different planet. A true hot-hatch. Extreme makeover. Styling: Just one look. From the front or rear, the A 250 AMG Sport boasts a wide track, low stance, striking body contours, with the wheels pushed right to the edge of the car’s footprint. The Stuttgart Benz design studio revised the front-end with new LED headlamps, big bonnet, an imposing front bumper and a more eye-catching
new radiator grille. The nose stands out with that big Stuttgart threepointed star in the center. Indication, this is the top-of-the-line A-Class AMG Sport. The new-generation A-Class also differs a lot from the preceding series when viewed from the rear, i.e. the bumper, tail lights and exhaust tailpipes are in a new design which further emphasizes the width of the body to ensure a more muscular look. Interior: The cabin is well-built and exudes that premium luxury feel. Our demonstrator AMG Sport boasts trim suede leather and carbonfibre, smoke grey brushed aluminum and bright red accents around the air vents, red stitching on the deeply-sculpted sports seats, a leather-lined steering wheel and unique red seat belts. I like that. Out of the dashboard sprouts
an iPad Mini size LCD display; the infotainment system. The front seats impress with an elegant combination of leather and fabric. These seats will do a good job of holding both driver and front passenger in place during high-speed cornering. Engine room: The A 250 is powered by a high-tech direct injected,
turbocharged 2.0 liter petrol inline-four, producing 155kW of power and 350Nm of torque. The new A-Class engine is mated to a seven-speed twin-clutch 7G-DCT automated manual by MercedesBenz. Fuel consumption is reduced to circa 15 kilometer per liter thanks to ECO start/stop function. The drive: Ignition on and peak torque arrives early, and there’s loads of pulling power below 2500rpm. The real fun starts when you engage the Sport mode and push the tachometer past 4000rpm. The pickup is jaw-dropping, and in Sport mode the throttle response is razor-sharp. There’s almost no turbo lag, and power delivery is impressive. With the wheel-mounted paddles, you'll race through the ratios. What a blast! Zero to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, which is quick for a hot-hatch. Handling, traction and balance are outstanding for a front-wheel drive car. There’s little body roll, and grip under braking is rock-solid. This is what you'll expect from a premium German brand. Pure driving pleasure. The new A-Class is a trendsetter and an innovative leader in its class offering an outstanding drive experience, amazing looks, with plenty of tech, and carries the coveted three-pointed star. A test-drive recommended, especially if you've never driven a Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

Oh My Cod –
My Plaice or Yours?
Fish and chips a Pattaya tradition Contrary to rumor, fish and chips have been on the go in Pattaya for a very long time. Loong John, a Scottish expat who operated a humble cafeteria off Pattaya Central Road, was serving them in the 1980s along with other favorites such as “mince and tatties”. Greg’s Kitchen and The Sportsman, still going strong of course, also have a long tradition of good quality and generous portions as part of a much wider menu. The first take-away specialist outlet in Pattaya dates back to 1995 and was known as The Toby Jug, on Soi Yamoto. Sadly the enterprise was short-lived as the owners never quite mastered the right temperature for the fat and the chips were lamentably soggy. Also there was nowhere to sit down on the premises and the opening hours relied too much on daylight customers. Don’t forget, a lot of
Brits like fish and chips after a few late beers. Fish-and-chips shops have existed in Britain since the 1860s, spurred on by the arrival of railways in the industrial revolution age
which facilitated the transport of fresh fish from the ports to the industrial cities. It was one of the very few dishes not subject to rationing in World War Two in the early 1940s. Many researchers have
come to the conclusion that fish and chips did indeed help win the war against Hitler. Some fish-and-chip shops have imaginative names too. Continued on page P2/26

Oh My Cod – My Plaice or Yours?
There is still A Salt and Battery in Liverpool, a Codfather in Birmingham, and A Frying Scotsman in Glasgow. But fish and chips have never been an agreed item. John Lennon liked tomato ketchup on his meal, while Michael Jackson preferred mushy peas. A scallop usually is a marine mollusk, but in Lancashire and Yorkshire it’s a potato wedge. The British
have never taken to the American preference for eating coleslaw with fish and chips and positively refuse to dip their chips in mayonnaise like the Belgians do. The British preference for accompaniments is for malt vinegar, picked onions, a lemon wedge, or a Chinese-style curry sauce. It is said that Tony Blair won the British general election of 1997 when he was photographed by the media-train enjoying fish and chips in a greasy newspaper. In Pattaya, the importance of fish and chips has always been the British market, but these days the Eastern Seaboard city appeals to a much wider audience. For example, you will
often see Russians tucking into a plateful at the popular Simon’s restaurant, situated diagonally to the Hanuman circle in Jomtien. However, fish and chips have not yet taken off with the Indians and the Chinese. There is a fishand-chip restaurant in Beijing, but sugar rather than salt is sprayed on the meal. Ugh! Those who are worried about the fattening nature of deep-fried batter can always opt for breadcrumbs instead. Several Pattaya restaurants know what you mean and the breadcrumb variety is very tasty at, for example, The Pig and Whistle at its Soi 7 and Jomtien branches. The Jolly Friar on Pattaya’s Soi Lengkee is another popular gathering place for fish-and-chips addicts and offers what must be the largest fish cake for miles around. Incidentally, a fish cake in Yorkshire would need to have a fish slice segregated between two potato wedges rather than as a single mixture. The latest addition to the cuisine in Pattaya is Not Just Curry and Chips, on Pratumnak Road between Soi 6 and Tara Court and opposite the Argyle Apartments. A second
branch on Thepprasit Road, near Outlook Mall, is also scheduled to open soon. Curry and Chips, opened by British expat Paul Markham, has eating on the premises as well as take-away and delivery menu options. There’s a wide variety of choices–cod, dory, or haddock, for example, and the shop is busy from noon to 11 at night, which speaks for itself. The curry sauce, by the way, is exactly what you would find in the UK. Again imitating trends in the UK, the menu is being diversified step by step. There’s already scampi, sausage in batter, spam fritters, roast chicken, prawn crackers, and Chinese spring rolls, as well as a wide variety of pies and pasties. Coming soon is a selection of Chinese and Indian dishes which already are the hallmark of fish-and-chips eateries throughout England, Scotland, and Wales. There’s a menu in Russian, a sign of the times of course, which makes you think that fish and chips are more popular in cold climates than warm. Except when you are a tourist or an expat of course! The sub-logo of Not Just Curry and Chips sums it up: “We don’t just do fast food, we do good food fast.” It looks like another British tradition has really taken root in Thailand’s most popular seaside resort.

The Phoenix Effect! It was exactly two years ago when I wrote another article with the title ‘The Phoenix Effect’ and in it I wrote how I couldn’t help but notice the very strong interest in the Phoenix Golf Club and all its surrounding areas. Phoenix Golf Club was then and is now fast becoming one of the more notable Eastern Seaboard landmarks and is right up there with the Silverlake Vineyards and Winery in being two of the most notable areas to watch for residential development. In fact just two years ago there were at least eight developments that I knew of just off the golf course and within a close distance of the lovely fairways at Phoenix Golf Club and today there are even more new developments in the making. Three of the most recent entries as home design and construction inside Phoenix Golf Club are each very large and luxurious million-dollar-plus estate homes with very impressive architectural design. One of the homes is a very large two story with super high ceilings and the concrete and steel structure exterior is of a very impressive modern design. It has a spectacular view over its own private swimming pool and looks out across one of the beautiful Phoenix Golf Club fairways. The second home to make its entry as the latest ‘dream home’ inside Phoenix Golf Club has a very large stately and traditional feel to it and the home’s exterior design has a number of very nice design elements that really catch your eye. Not to be outdone, Songland Company’s Luxurious Tadarawadi Serviced Estate homes with modern Thai accents and Oriental and Southeast Asian interior design elements have definitely unveiled the Phoenix Golf Club as a major player in the ‘where would you really like to live?’ category. Each of these three million-dollarplus estate homes is amongst the very finest homes on the Eastern Seaboard. In my next article, ‘Phoenix Rising,’
by Clayton Wade Managing Director
I will present the latest news about the Phoenix Golf Club’s new owner, general manager and the latest entries into the golf course luxury home category. Until then, it’s on to the ‘Phoenix Effect’ and what we are seeing today surrounding the Phoenix Golf Club. In fact there are about 10 or more developments currently that I know of with all of them directly adjacent to the Phoenix Golf Club and within a very close distance of the lovely landscaped fairways. Literally, these fine developments popping up all around Phoenix Golf Club are either right next to it or directly across the street making them all definitely Phoenix Golf Club area residences and all of them are looking to cash in on the Phoenix lifestyle and the wonderful country living available so close to Pattaya and all of its great food, fun and activities. There are a number of really well done housing developments surrounding Phoenix with Jon and A Sarginson’s Phoenix Lakeside definitely being one for sure. Jon Sarginson, with a wealth of experience in design, construction, and engineering, has actually constructed and engineered a gorgeous lake with a full-size two-lane bridge with sitting salas on both sides of the bridge that goes right across the center of the lake. Great concept and a fantastic addition to the area’s fine housing developments. Louis Lee has a very nice luxury home development called Phoenix Villa Resort that is right at the bottom (south side) entrance to Phoenix Golf Club, and his flagship home is a magnificent and huge estate with Thai design accents and materials all of marble, granite, teak and other hardwoods, etc., and yes, a member of the million-dollar-home club for sure! Next down the road is a newer development called the Royal Phoenix with very nice home design concepts for the affordable market and those that thought that they could not afford to live next to Phoenix Golf Club.
Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd. email@example.com
Phoenix Golf Course Clubhouse
Just a short drive farther around the Phoenix Golf Club you will come to the Phoenix Palms development which is the creation of Jack Pinkney and Peter Lewis, two of the more personable developers in the area with both being incredibly passionate about doing absolutely everything right…. and then some! Phoenix Palms is a small (six luxury boutique homes) development with all homes featured by lovely swimming pools and gorgeously landscaped gardens. Jack and Peter have managed to design and decorate these fine homes inside and out to look like very expensive properties, but again, you will be well surprised by the reasonable pricing as I would say that the Phoenix Palms is very much another affordable housing development for those that want to live the high life and be in the beautiful countryside and within the Phoenix Golf Club area. Starting directly in front and across the street from the entrance to Phoenix Golf Club is an astonishing mansion which many of us thought was an apartment building for many months until it became evident that it was a huge and impressive three-story mansion with incredible three-storytall pillars on each side of the front

Clayton personally was responsible for
entrance way. Definitely a member of the milliondollar-home club, although in this case I suspect several million dollars! Just thinking about these multimillion dollar mansions and estates starting to surround the Phoenix Golf Club fairways cannot help but make you ask yourself just what is ahead for Phoenix Golf Club itself with so much land available and so much interest developing. The incredible residential and commercial growth seen all over the Eastern Seaboard is quite astounding and Phoenix Golf Club is certainly riding that wave of interest and investment coming into our Eastern Seaboard region. As many already know, the Phoenix Golf Club was recently purchased and the new owner did not waste any time pouring money and professional expertise into their new golf course. In my next article I will introduce our readers to the Phoenix Golf Club’s new owner and new general manager and what the new owner is already doing to completely overhaul the entire three courses at Phoenix Golf Club. Yes, there really is a Phoenix rising in this case and the sky is the limit for its future and success.

Legal & Expat Money FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS by: Magna Carta Law Office
Thailand Retirement Visa What is Thailand Retirement Visa? Thailand retirement visa is obtainable by anyone age 50 or older, regardless of nationality, who has the financial capacity to settle in Thailand. A retirement visa is actually an extension of an original nonimmigrant single or multiple-entry O or B type visa. How do I qualify for a Retirement Visa? You can qualify to be granted a retirement visa if: 1. You are 50 years of age or older; and 2. You have obtained a temporary non-immigrant visa; and 3. You have a proof of ongoing source of income, such as pension, of not less than 65,000 baht per month; or 4. You have an account deposit with a bank in Thailand of not less than 800,000 baht as evidenced by bank account transactions over the previous 2 months (3 months for subsequent extensions); or 5. You have an annual income plus bank account deposit totalling not less than 800,000 baht as of the application filing date What are the required documents in applying for a Retirement Visa? - Passport with validity of not less than 18 months - Completed visa application forms - 3 passport-sized photos (4x6cm) of the applicant taken within the last six months - A copy of a bank statement or income letter (original) or a bank deposit plus a monthly income totalling not less than the minimum financial requirement per year. - Original letter of guarantee from the bank, if a bank statement is issued. Could the foreign husband and wife use a bank account with their combined name for this purpose? No, the bank account name must be only that of the particular applicant. Does this mean we, as foreign couples, are required to submit evidence of a total of at least 1.6M baht in our Thai bank accounts? Since you are required to have individual bank accounts, it is imperative that you have at least 800,000 baht in each account. Can I apply for a Retirement Visa outside Thailand? You can start the retirement visa procedure outside Thailand, most preferably from your home country, by obtaining a non-immigrant visa which will be valid for 90 days from the date of entry. A non-immigrant visa can be extended or converted to a one-year retirement visa in Thailand during the last 30 days of your permitted stay. The 90-day validity of your non-immigrant visa shall give you enough time to deposit in a Thai bank the required amount
of money which must be reflected for 2 months in the bank transaction certificate upon your visa application. What are the restrictions that I have to consider while I am holding a Retirement Visa? You will be permitted to stay in Thailand for one year from the date your retirement visa is granted. You are strictly prohibited from having employment while on this type of visa. You must report to the Immigration officer in your area of residence every 90 days during your stay in Thailand. During this period, if you wish to leave and re-enter the country, you are required to apply for and obtain re-entry permit (single or multiple) at the Immigration Office before leaving the country. If you leave without a reentry permit, the retirement visa will become invalid. Is a one-year Retirement Visa renewable? A Retirement Visa may be renewed annually at the Thai Immigration Office. If you wish to renew your retirement visa, you must do so approximately 2 weeks before the expiry date on your visa stamp and you have to show the same documents as required in your first application. Remember, however, that the Immigration Office, at their discretion, can ask for additional documentation. I am eligible to apply for a Retirement Visa but as my wife is under 50 years of age; what type of visa can she obtain? If your spouse is not eligible to apply for a retiree visa, she must obtain prior to entry into Thailand a non-immigrant O Visa which may also be extended for a period of one year by submitting an application to the Immigration Department, stating as her purpose “to stay with the family”. A notarized marriage certificate must be provided as evidence together with other documents and financial requirements.

Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley
You pay your money and take your choice There has never been-and probably never will be--a foolproof, onesize-fits-all answer to the dilemma of trying to produce a high return on savings with minimal, or no risk. The idea that a host of risk-free opportunities exist out there that will continually quadruple the returns from banks forever is a myth. The conundrum is this: in order to achieve worthwhile results money has to be placed in asset-backed investments of some sort. These come in assorted colors but all have issues generally connected with risk and/or liquidity. Let’s take some of the ‘hard asset’ funds that have performed well throughout the slowly disappearing financial crisis. By ‘hard asset’ we mean funds that hold tangible holdings, such as property. As a strategy, they must invest up to 90 percent of the fund in the class of investment that have chosen to base their fund in because, as for everyone else, ‘cash’ does not perform, so the more invested, the more likely a better return for clients. This is fine until, for whatever reason, redemptions exceed subscriptions over a prolonged period, leading to a liquidity problem, i.e. they have to sell prime assets under forced conditions–not ideal. The choices they then face are to ‘gate’ (suspend) the fund until cash is realized from the orderly sale of assets, or draw on either pre-arranged or renegotiated finance facilities to maintain liquidity. The fact that a particular fund finds itself in this position does not mean that the investments it holds are now worth less than they were three months ago. The reality is that regrouping to handle such a problem probably means that the fund will come out of this period stronger and better placed to deal with investment outflows. This, of course, does not help those who need to withdraw money during a suspended period. However, to illustrate the case, imagine you own a property in prime central London with a tenant and a mortgage. If the tenant stops paying the rent which covers the mortgage, it doesn’t mean the property is worth any less, it just means you have a liquidity problem. Excess redemptions occur for a number of possible reasons but often, in part, because investors are used to seeing a steady notch up of their fund value every month with such funds, combined with the whole ‘short termism’ thinking today, often brought about by 24/7 access to fund values, brings some to the conclusion that the first time yields slip, most likely temporarily, it’s time to get out. This shortterm view is crippling for most investments that aren’t in the bank. Yes, if you buy and sell the right stock on the markets at the right time, you can achieve significant results, but most investors miss the boat and buy at a ‘high’ and sell at a ‘low’, because their experience in the markets and that same short termism takes over, often brought about by the fear created when a price drops and the unwillingness to look further ahead and ride out the curves. If you go back just a decade, or perhaps two, you would see that those who generally made money on the markets were investors who bought blue chip stock and held them for the long term. This is largely what Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway does, albeit on a much grander scale. As with most things, a spread of investments is desirable, but not diversification for its own sake. A mix of well-selected, different asset classes to make up a portfolio gives balance and reduces risk. Also, when deciding on your holdings, consideration should be given as to whether capital growth or income is the main objective. Clearly both are desirable but there is usually an emphasis for one over the other. Business News Increased political uncertainty will hurt Bangkok real estate market further But property prices are unlikely to fall in the short term by Jones Lang LaSalle (Thailand)
The Constitutional Court’s verdict commanding Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to leave office has heightened the political uncertainty in Thailand. While the verdict has not virtually resolved the current political crisis, it has sparked fears of new violence by the government’s supporters. Suphin Mechuchep, managing director of JLL, an international property services and consultancy firm, shares her view on how the escalating political tension will affect the Bangkok real estate market: “Increased political uncertainty will generally have negative impact on investment sentiment in Thailand’s real estate market as it has dampened investor confidence. In the short term, it is also expected to negatively affect demand in different property sectors. For example, demand in the Bangkok hotel market is likely to soften further as news in international media reporting fears over new political violence in Bangkok may affect international visitor arrivals to the city. “The rising political tension will also hurt consumer confidence further which will have negative impact on the residential and retail sectors. Though the Bangkok office market is likely to feel the least impact as tenants are locked into multi-year lease agreements, and there
has been no clear sign of companies with offices in Bangkok downsizing or shutting down operations, growth in demand from new business set-ups will continue to slow. However, we do not expect the current political crisis to lead a property market collapse. The political turmoil has hurt the country’s macro economy, but generally most property developers and owners remain financially strong and thus a situation where property owners will be forced to sell their property assets at discounted prices in the near future is unlikely. “A long-term outlook for the Bangkok real estate market remains hard to forecast as it will depend on how the political crisis will progress and be resolved.”

A family recipe for Pattaya property success Clayton and Supap Wade are the driving force
by Barry Kenyon
Premier Homes Real Estate is the eastern seaboard’s longest-established corporate relocation company as well as acting as the region’s sales and leasing agent for the most exclusive properties. As Pattaya continues to expand, the company also plans to focus increasingly on the sale of land and commercial properties.
merican born Clayton Wade has been in the real estate industry for 28 years, but has been running Premier Homes for over 18 years with his Thai wife Supap as co-managing directors. Clayton is a council member with Gerson Lehrman Group, the New York-based international research and consultancy firm, and has been a national panel judge for the Thailand Property Awards for many years. Supap was included in the Property Report Asia Magazine’s only published edition of Real Estate Power 99 which featured the most influential real estate figures in Thailand. She has been on the front cover of several Thailand-based magazines with feature stories about
To earn clients’ complete trust while offering honest and independent advice her and her business acumen. Born in Lamphun province, Supap first met Clayton as a translator working in a sports shop in Bangkok when he was Thailand's national fencing coach. “We are one of the very few American-Thai family businesses in Pattaya,” says Supap, “and I think that has helped a lot. Building a business based on trust is what success in the real estate world is all about.

Since then, we have placed on a relocation basis most of the start-up executives for the BMW manufacturing facility on the Eastern Seaboard.” Over the years Premier Homes has also been successful in selling and renting the finest residential properties on the Eastern Seaboard. Supap adds, “We are both certified as International Property Specialists by the National Association of Realtors in USA for many years now. Being a small boutique agency means we are able to offer a direct and personal service to locally-based and international clients wherever they may be.” Clayton Wade is well known throughout the Asia-Pacific region for his writing and public speaking, contributing regularly to many of the leading newspapers and magazines including the

On TV, Clayton has made many presentations including appearances as the resident real estate consultant for Thailand’s Property Profile Show. He has been a guest speaker with several of the country’s top political and business figures on CNBC’s Managing Asia series. As Pattaya continues to develop as a metropolitan centre, his role in the media is expected to grow further. Both Clayton and Supap agree that the future of Pattaya is already set. “18 years ago,” stresses Supap, “the much smaller Pattaya was divided into three – Brits in South Pattaya, Germans in the north and the Thais dominating in Jomtien.
Now the booming city is truly international with the Russians, the Chinese, the Indians and Arab nationals settling here. It’s no longer realistic to talk in terms of zones as in the old days.” Clayton maintains that the big expansion now will be southwards as Pattaya city no longer offers the space for much expansion. “You can already see the developments on Jomtien Second Road and there are many exciting projects at Silver Lake, Bang Saray and other districts.” He adds that the necessary infrastructure is already being developed, such as Cartoon Network Amazone (the Bang Saray hi-tech water

Tips & Advice
Visa for Albania Q: I am a Thai woman with an English boyfriend. We want to visit Switzerland where my boyfriend works but would first like to visit Albania where a friend of his lives. Can you inform me of the visa regulations for a Thai visiting Albania? A: There is no Albanian embassy in Thailand, the nearest being in Kuala Lumpur. If you can obtain a multiple-entry Schengen visa for Switzerland you can visit Albania without a separate visa. If not, you will need to visit Kuala Lumpur to obtain an Albanian tourist visa. The embassy there needs a lot of documentation and evidence–including itinerary and local contact. See their website for details. Issuing UK passport Q: I have heard that the British embassy in Bangkok is again issuing passports and that I no longer need to send my renewal documents to either London or Hong Kong. Is this correct? A: A new procedure was announced in March. You now need to apply personally in Bangkok at the newly opened Trendy Office Building on Sukhumvit Soi 11. You cannot apply by post nor use an agent to go on your behalf. You will need to visit Trendy a second time a few weeks later when your passport is returned to Trendy from UK. The whole process is now very bureaucratic, for example, you have to book your appointment at Trendy by email giving a choice of dates, so be sure to check the website carefully or hire somebody who understands the detail. Wanting to work Q: I need to change my tourist visa to non-immigrant so that I can apply for a work permit in Thailand. My friend recently received a non-immigrant visa to apply for a retirement
visa at Thai Immigration. But when I asked for the transfer I was told it was not possible. What’s the difference? A: Your friend and you wanted a nonimmigrant visa for quite different purposes. It is possible to change from tourist to nonimmigrant provided that you are applying for a retirement visa at the same time and with the proper documentation. You, on the other hand, are seeking a work permit and need a nonimmigrant “B” visa to start the process, which is as very different proposition. Some Thai embassies in Southeast Asia will award a “B” visa but will likely require substantial documentation. Going to the border Q: I am 49 and can’t obtain a retirement visa in Thailand until I am 50 which is three months away. My idea is to go three times to the Cambodian border and each time obtain 30 days on arrival, which is OK as I am a Brit. But somebody has told me that there is a limit on the number of times you can do that. I don’t want to risk my retirement visa later this year, so what’s the reality? A: Recently (May 2014) the Immigration Bureau curtailed the number of back-to-back land visa runs to just one. You could probably return by air and obtain 30 days at the airport twice. To be absolutely sure, visit a Thai embassy or consulate abroad and obtain a prior tourist or non-immigrant visa to see you through. After my death Q: I am 87, a US citizen, and in failing health. I am trying to put my affairs in order so that my Thai wife doesn’t run into too many problems. My question is whether she must report my death to Immigration whenever that proves to be necessary. A: There is no penalty if she doesn’t. But it’s sensible for her to go to the local Immigration Office with your passport and death certificate; they will keep copies and return the originals.

Snap Judgment Barbed Wire Tourism It is becoming increasingly easy to visit North Korea as a tourist. The state airline and travel operator, Kyoto, reports more and more planeloads of mostly Europeans booking package tours that begin in Beijing. That’s the first hassle–you need two visas, one for North Korea and one for China. It is one of many paradoxes that the Chinese visa application form is four times longer than the North Korean form. Several travel agencies in Thailand can easily fix you up with the necessary paperwork and permits, but it’s not dirt-cheap. Expect to pay at least US $2,000 just for a long weekend stay. The question is whether we should be going to Kim Jongun’s hermit kingdom with its appalling record of human rights, threatening behavior, and all the rest. Critics call the whole experience “barbed wire tourism,” but enthusiasts say that the constant trickle of overseas visitors will eventually transform North Korea’s citizens by bringing them into touch with more international perspectives. The argument is that North Korea will slowly behave in a more acceptable way if there is international contact. Some even argue that ordinary people will eventually get rid of their rulers after they have been exposed to western ideas long enough. These notions, in fact, are ridiculous. Tourists visiting Pyongyang or one or two other locations on the list are not allowed to mix freely with anybody and are escorted everywhere by experienced North Korean mentors who know how to play the game. If a foreign tourist is allowed to speak to a local, it is safe to bet your cotton socks that the meeting has been pre-arranged or approved by the authorities. Not to mention the language difficulty. Every year foreigners, including tourists, are allowed to join in the annual marathon. Try speaking English to someone who knows only Korean. Smiling and nodding won’t do much for political progress. All North Korean émigrés and escapees now living in South Korea seem to agree that another danger of foreign tourism is that visitors may soak up much of the state’s propaganda. Comments such as “life isn’t too bad there,” and “it’s a clean city and I never saw any starving people,” are often heard after foreigners have spent a long weekend in Pyongyang. Equally, people can only judge by what we see and not by what they are not shown. A few years ago, a British politician declared there was no prostitution in Pattaya. He also admitted he had spent most of his time in a five-star hotel and had ventured out only to Nong Nooch in a limousine which by-passed South Pattaya. The cash generated by North Korean tourism goes straight into the pockets of the regime where, presumably, it is available to fund research on nuclear weapons or to buy a luxurious lifestyle for the communist elite. The “dear leader” recently sent a team of investigators to find the very best cheeses for his table whilst the pizzas at his palatial residence are said to be the best in Asia. His collection of videos and DVDs is reported to be astounding and includes many classic movies no longer available commercially, according to Dennis Rodman, the retired basketball player who claims to be a chum of Kim Jong-un. Of course, there is a case for North Korea. The Korean peninsula war of 1950-53 ended in an armistice and not a peace treaty. There are thousands of US troops in South Korea who conduct military exercises on a regular basis. US nuclear warheads are known to be readily available in the region--if not actually in South Korea itself. North Korea is a buffer and client state for China, whose leaders certainly don’t want US forces at their border, which would happen if North Korea collapsed. It’s comforting to think that foreign tourism can soften North Korean political thinking, but it’s a total illusion. Foreign tourists poured into Germany in the late 1930s, especially for the 1936 Olympic Games. What effect did all this have on Adolf Hitler? None whatsoever. There are some curious defenses of tourism to North Korea. An American wrote recently and originally–by the way, not one that has been arrested at Pyongyang airport for anti-social behavior– that he wished to visit because the skiing was excellent and the slopes apparently unaffected by global warming. But the main reason people pay considerable sums to visit Pyongyang is likely that they can point to the stamps in their passport and boast to their friends back home that they have actually been there. That’s what the whole debate comes down to in one word: vanity!

Leading Thai racer in the Men's division was Natthaphong Phonoppharat, who started the first day with a run of first places that continued through the competition winning seven out of eight races – the last race being a fourth place finish and his drop race for the series. Second place went to fellow Thai racer Pattaradanai Jinin, who also won the Espoir Men crown, holding off the challenge from the sole
Sri Lankan racer, Chameera Gunawardena. Chameera was third in the Men's division and second in Espoir Men. Third place in the Men's Espoir went to Suttiphong Krowparkobkit from Thailand. In the Women's division, a unbeaten run of eight races secured the Asian crown for Hong Kong racer Sin Lam Sonia Lo, ahead of Thai Sarocha Prumprai (who also won Espoir Women) in second, and Wai Yan Ngai (also second in Espoir
Women) from Hong Kong in third. Third place in Espoir Women went July Hmwe from Myanmar--an upcoming windsurfing nation. Hong Kong and Thailand dominated this year’s event. The RS: One
class will continue its 2014 journey with the European Championships in Cesme (Turkey), the Asian Sailing Championships and Asian Games in Incheon (South Korea), the Asian Beach Games
in Phuket. The 2014 World Championships will be in Bintan (Indonesia) at the end of the year. For full results go to www. topofthegulfregatta.com/results. shtml.
Sandy confirms another season in Formula 3 and dominates Nurbürgring round Thai formula ace Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik will remain at the Formula 3 level another year to gain additional experience before moving up to the highly competitive GP2 level. He will retain the support of his sponsors and will continue with the Italian RP Motorsport squad in the recently renamed Euro Formula Open series, utilizing the Dallara Formula 3 chassis with Toyota supplied engines. The series specifications have been upgraded since last year with faster engines and tires. Phuket born Thai racer Stuvik showed his racing skills by dominating both wet and dry racing conditions for the season start of the EuroFormula Open at
Nurbürgring this weekend. The 19-year-old, constantly stayed amongst the fastest drivers during test sessions in wet and foggy conditions, showing his determination to be a force to be reckoned with for the 2014 season. During qualifying for first race, Stuvik kept catching other cars during his fast laps and needed to find a clear lap without overtaking in order to set the fastest time. In the end he would have to settle for P2, with only one good clear lap to set a representative time. In the season opening race, the Thai driver had to fend off several challengers in the first few corners, leaving the pole sitter an opportunity to open a lead on the first lap. Stuvik then gave chase through the race and in the end took the checkered flag only 2.9 seconds behind the Spanish racer Alex Palou. For the qualifying run at a sunny but cold Nurbürgring, Stuvik was unbeatable and set his fastest time in the middle of the session and again repeated the same fastest time in the end of the hard fought session. The Thai driver took his pole position with a time of
1:51:923, almost 4 tenths faster than the second placed driver. The 21 Formula 3 cars saw the red lights go out for the second race at noon and a jumpstarting car immediately shot past Stuvik to take the lead, however in the second chicane on the first lap, Stuvik overtook to regain the lead and started immediately pulling away from the other cars. Palou managed to move from 6th to 2nd in the start and gave the Thai driver a chase, but a mid race mistake from the Spaniard saw Stuvik pulling away with a huge lead. By the checkered flag, Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik had built a lead gap of 10.6 seconds for a dominant victory at the German circuit. After the race, Sandy said, “For the qualifying session I was determined to push to the maximum for a pole position and I felt all the hard
training paid off when I got back up to the front again. In the race I felt I had a good start and was surprised to see Igor Urien flying past me into the first corner, however in the second chicane I saw an opportunity to pass him around the outside and after that I felt I could control the race pace. It was a fantastic feeling to be back on top of the podium again and hear the Thai National Anthem played in Germany”. With a 2nd and a 1st place from the two season opening races, Stuvik takes a commanding lead in the championship with 44 points, with his teammate, Polish driver Arthur Janosz in second with 30 points and Alex Palou from Spain in 3rd with 27 points. The next round of the EuroFormula open Championship will run in Algarve’s Portimao Circuit on 7-8 June 2014.

Tips & Advice QUICK TIP See what you’re missing. Don a pair of eyeglasses when washing tableware. You may be amazed to see how much cleaner your china, silverware, pots and pans turn out. Proper lighting over the sink also helps you to spot spots…and stains. The combination of glasses plus improved lighting will help you see what otherwise may easily be overlooked by the naked eye--all the more so as we age. Rub-A Duck Dear Andy, Can you tell me please how I can remove things that are stuck on with silicon? I have three flying ducks which I would like to take with me when I move. I always read your article first, which I love. Trudy (Hilda Ogden) As you probably already learned, Trudy, removing silicon adhesive is not easy. It requires time, solvent, and elbow grease. Check hardware and home improvement stores for SiliconBe-Gone or another brand of solvent made specifically to remove silicon. As an option, you can use acetone, mineral spirits, or denatured (NOT isopropyl) alcohol. You also will need a scraper or a sharp knife. To begin with, wear rubber gloves to avoid skin damage. Apply the solvent to the entire silicon surface (or to as much of the adhesive as is accessible). Wait a couple hours if you use Silicon-Be-Gone or similar products, but twice as long if you use alcohol, acetone, or mineral spirits. (You may remove the gloves while waiting.) When you determine that the adhesive has softened, use the scraper or knife to carefully rub away the silicon. Take your time to avoid damaging the ducks or the surface to which they are attached. If you cannot scrape away all of the silicon adhesive on your first attempt, reapply whatever solvent you are using; wait several hours, then scrape again until it is all removed. Blunt Question Andy, can you give me some advice on sharpening knives? Back home a peddler came around every month or so and sharpened our blunt knives,
but I have not seen any such service in Pattaya. Or do you think I should just buy knives that never need to be sharpened? Gerald The easiest and best way to sharpen your blades, Gerald, is with a whetstone, sold at most markets and home improvement stores here. Place the dry whetstone (contrary to what its name might imply) course side up on a flat surface (preferably on a wet towel over a cutting board or countertop). The wet towel will help prevent the stone from sliding. Grasp the knife by the handle and hold the edge against the stone at a very slight angle—almost flush against the stone. Using only moderate pressure, slide the blade forward and across the whetstone, covering the entire length of the blade. After a dozen strokes of the blade—all in the same direction, either front-toback or back-to front, turn the knife over and repeat on the other side of the blade. Now turn the stone over to the fine-grit side and repeat the process another dozen times per side. If you have a sharpening steel, use it to hone the blade before rinsing and drying your knife. As to those knives that never need sharpening, don’t believe all you see advertised; all blades become blunt with repeated use. Washer Weary We have many problems with our clothes washer and hope maybe you can tell us how what we can do to avoid them. Nid Good question, Nid, but specific details would help. For now I would simply point you to the most common
oversight: maintenance. Routine maintenance can help prevent all manner of problems while making your washer operate more efficiently. If you have a dedicated faucet that supplies water to the machine, make a habit of closing and reopening the faucet every week or two so that the faucets don’t bind up. Otherwise, you may not be able to close the faucets when needed, or they may leak at intermediate positions. Also, inspect your fill hoses for weak spots or bubbles and replace poor and worn hoses as necessary. Every year or two, replace the washers inside the hose ends. Better yet, use braided, highpressure hoses as fill hoses. Check often for dirt and sand buildup on the screens in the fill valves onto which the hoses attach; clean the screens as necessary. And don’t forget to periodically clean the washing machine’s lint filter—at least once a month. Odor Eater Our under-sink water heater recently sprang a leak that we didn’t detect for several days, Andy. Water flowed into the cabinets under the sink and just sat there until we noticed it dripping onto the floor. We’ve had the leak fixed, but the odor remains. It smells like an old, neglected house. Any tips on getting rid of the stench? Dawn Begin by airing out the cabinets real well, Dawn. Aim a fan into the cabinets and blow out the odors as much as possible for a few hours or longer and ensure that the wood is totally dry. Then sprinkle baking soda throughout the affected surfaces and allow it to remain for a day or so. Baking soda will absorb the odors.
Garbage In… Now we buy house have garbage disposer in kitchen sink but never have before and sometime have problem. How we can do? Gae and Lek Garbage disposal units are still not common in Thailand, but are found more and more in newer kitchens. They are a great convenience when they're working right and smelling good. When they're not, there are some things you can do. To help maintain water flow through the disposal, always turn the water on before you start the disposal; turn the water off only after the unit has stopped. To really get things flowing, start the disposal and feed it a healthy dose of old ice cubes. To improve both odor control and water flow, feed all leftover lime peels into the disposal. If the disposal hums but won't turn, it's probably jammed. Simply turn it off, stick an Allen wrench in the fitting at the bottom center of the shaft, and turn it back and forth until it begins to rotate all the way around. If you must manually clear the grinder in the sink, use tongs-not your fingers--to pick out the jamming material; be careful. Finally, if the disposal doesn't hum when you turn it on, its internal overload protection may have been tripped. Look at the bottom of the disposal for a reset button. With the power off, at least at the switch, push and release that button, then turn on the power again. Our Community Sporting heroes by Derek Franklin Think of Thailand’s medal history at the summer Olympic Games and there are two sports that the Kingdom has done better in than any other sports: boxing and weightlifting.
It was at the Beijing 2008 Games that Somjit Jongjohor won a gold medal in the Flyweight division, while Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon, who apart from having the longest name of any Olympic champion, lifted her way to a gold medal in the women’s 53 kg weightlifting competition. They returned to Thailand as superstars, and while Somjit moved into the world of entertainment and became a well known actor, Prapawadee joined the armed forces. Both became brand ambassadors for Siam Sport, Thailand’s largest sports media company. Both came to the Father Ray Foundation to donate sporting equipment to the students at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities, where they met the children and students from projects managed by the Father Ray Foundation. They were entertained with a traditional dance routine
from the young girls; special needs children hosted a magic show, and boys from the Children’s Home demonstrated Muay Thai. Prapawadee was happy to meet a fellow weightlifter, Prakit Thongsang, a wheelchair user who has traveled the world representing the Kingdom and bringing home a large haul of medals.
It was a wonderful opportunity for the children and students to meet two professional athletes, and to hear from two ordinary people whose hard work and dedication has earned them rewards within reach of everyone. Help bring Green Pattaya forward A successful cleaning by Green Pattaya Another successful cleaning outside the Royal Cliff Garden Condominium and the Sheraton Pattaya Resort by Green Pattaya earlier this month was the 17th cleaning in 13 months. Ditches were full of garbage left behind from vans and buses parking in the area. A core team of Green Pattaya volunteers gathered 20 bags of plastic, preventing it from reaching the sea where, eventually, it would be eaten by fish that in turn would be eaten by tourists and residents. The area is now clean, but for how long? This is the third time Green Pattaya cleaned this area. Green Pattaya needs help from the community The Kamala Green Club in Phuket had another successful meeting in April, with two dozen hotel and other entrepreneurs meeting up to help clean the beaches on different dates and locations. They also have two full-time cleaners working the beaches and the tourist areas every day. Surely this is something many real estate, hotel and other tourist-dependent companies could do. Green Pattaya needs the local business community’s help to push the tide of garbage back. In places like Rayong and Bang Saray, the beaches are laden with rubbish. Pattaya must act soon to preclude a similar fate. With the
construction of new hotels, properties, and tourist attractions, the waste is growing ever quicker and soon the garbage will create health risks. Small private garbage dumps are growing inside the city and are a direct threat to nearby residents. Can you imagine trying to sell a property next to a garbage dump? The major sponsors of Green Pattaya are charities and a handful of businesses. However, each cleaning in Pattaya is covered by all the English language media and some Russian media. Surely, the city fathers understand the importance of a green and clean Pattaya that will cost them almost nothing. Green Pattaya’s budget is around 1000 baht, collecting 2000 kg of rubbish each month, with the help of volunteers and City Hall. With your help we can have a team of dedicated cleaners on a daily basis, and it will only cost you a few hundred baht a month. Have your human resources manager and public relations director contact Green Pattaya. We will arrange a date and place when representatives of your company can participate in cleaning up our city. We also can inform you about sponsor packages and how your company can help Pattaya stay green. Green Pattaya welcomes private sponsors as well, and we encourage schools to participate, while educating students about a green Pattaya. The next cleaning is Sunday morning
(May 17), 10 until noon at Wongamat Beach, Naklua Soi 18. We will gather at the seafood restaurant on the beach. The subsequent cleaning day is June 8, World Oceans Day. Companies and individuals are invited to pick a beach and clean it in a massive cleaning initiative. For more information go to www. facebook.com/GreenPattaya.
He is heavy, but he’s my son by Derek Franklin
Every day of Man’s short life he has been carried by his father. For 18 years his father has carried him to the bathroom, carried him to school, carried him when the family went to eat and recently carried him to the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities to register for the new school year. He came to enroll at the vocational school here in Pattaya as he no longer wants to be a burden on his family. He wants to be independent, learn new skills, find a job and earn money to help take care of himself and his parents. Man was just one of more
than 70 young adults, all with varying degrees of ability, who registered at the school. For two years Man, together with the new students, will be trained in a variety of courses: English, Electronic Repair, and Information Systems. There also is an elementary course for those who have not finished Grade 6. Unlike similar vocational education institutes throughout the country, at the Pattaya school there is no fee to the students or their families. The education, accommodation,
medical assistance and three meals a day are all free. At the end of two years, each student is guaranteed a job. What was the first thing Man received free when he arrived at the school? A new
wheelchair. He is now on the road to independence; in two years time he will wear his graduation gown with pride. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email email@example.com

Sugar high - Say No to sugar by Ayesha Rahman
We live in a sweet world. An average child consumes 20 teaspoons more sugar per day than he or she did in the
1970s. You know that too much sugar isn’t good for you, but did you know it could be toxic? The high one gets after
consuming large amounts of sugar is called a "sugar rush," which can cause twitches, spasms, and hyper-excitability in children. Sugar highs do not last very long and leave a child feeling drained afterwards. Some of the sugar we consume comes from foods we might expect—candy, soda, and cookies. But much of the sugar that we eat is hidden. Some pasta sauces, crackers, and even brands of ketchup have large amounts of sugar. Cutting sugar out of children’s diets altogether may be difficult. But making the effort to control our child’s sugar cravings will provide for a truly sweeter future. People worldwide are trying to thwart childhood obesity and sugar consumption. Fried food has disappeared from many cafeteria menus. Whole-
wheat bread has replaced white bread. Water and lowfat milk have replaced sugary beverages such as fruit punch, sports drinks, and soda. Many households have also banned junk food and now require healthier snack options in their kitchens. These efforts, both at home and in school, are slowly putting kids on the right track for healthy eating. Starting in 2015, there won't be any candy, sugary-
cereal or fast-food commercials aimed at kids. The Walt Disney Company has become the first major media company to ban ads for junk food and sugary drinks on its TV channels. It hopes this will stop kids from making poor food choices. Parents are the most important influence in a child's life. Preparing healthy meals daily and encouraging physical activity are two things you can do to share your
value for healthy living with your children. It is important to offer foods from all five food groups and let your child decide how much to eat at each meal. Consistently teaching them to listen to their own feelings of hunger and fullness will empower them to eat appropriately. Ayesha Rahman teaches kindergarten at Mooltripakdee International School.

You & Your Pets Train My Dog - How to House Train Your Dog House training your dog can be achieved surprisingly quickly if you follow a few simple steps and take the time to be consistent. Make sure to give your dog a routine. Always take him outside first thing in the morning, straight after meals and just before bedtime, these times are crucial. Also take your dog outside every two hours, every one hour for puppies; this ensures that the message is repetitive as to where you want him to go. Routine works well with dogs, it serves two purposes, it reinforces where you expect them to go and also helps to establish you as their pack leader. Accidents will happen, do not under any circumstances chastise your dog for this. You will only succeed in confusing him and breaching the bond
between you. Make no fuss and clean up in silence. However hard you may find this. Some think it is a good idea to lay paper down close to door.
I personally have never been a great fan of this idea. I think this sends a mixed message to your dog. If you want to go outside make the effort to take him outside regularly. If you lay paper down you are saying I want you to go outside but here is also OK. A mixed message that will confuse your dog. Punishment following an accident will certainly set the toilet-training process back and may well lead to behavioral problems further down the line. Accidents are not a personal attack on you. Keep a watchful eye on your dog, do not expect him to tell you when he needs to go outside. Do not let your dog wander all around the house unsupervised, watch for your dog's excessive sniffing or circling, if you notice this take him out immediately. Successful toilet training for your dog depends on your good timing so the more effort you make the quicker your dog will get the message as to where it is you expect him to go. Dogs like to have a routine, they respond well to it, they are
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. also keen to please. If you set them up to succeed and fulfill your end of the bargain you will be amazed at how quickly your dog responds. In this article we have covered some of the basics things you can do to house train your dog, whether a puppy or an adult dog. Remember the dog doesn't know where it is expected to go, that is your job to make that clear. When you take on a dog you take on a huge amount of responsibility. Be your dog’s pack leader and your dog will reward you with unconditional love, affection and respect for life. Take a little time, be patient with your dog, and your dog will be clean very quickly. House training or toilet training your dog is just one aspect of having a well trained, relaxed and balanced dog. It is amazing how many people tolerate a dog chewing up the house, constantly barking or pulling them down the street on the lead. Pet article courtesy of http:// pet-articles.blogspot.com.
Going to the Dogs...
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. –Josh Billings
The eyes of a horse are larger than those of most other animals, and they can move independently, giving the horse a shallow panoramic vision. Because its lenses are inflexible, a horse will focus on an image by moving its head to direct light rays to the central part of the retina. Unlike dogs, horses can see in color.

Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers
If your cat happens to ignore its litter box and instead elects to urinate in a favorite corner of your home, put a quick stop to such behavior by putting the food dish in that corner. Cats are usually fastidious about their environment, but once a spot has "that smell,” they will forever see that spot as "the place to go." However, if you change the purpose of that location, it will change the cat’s behavior. Clean up and deodorize the soiled area, and then put their food there.
