Pattaya’s Free Water Bonanza

25 BAHT

Poor income Thais to benefit

Mr Chaowalit Salan explains what it’s all about on the water front

ALTHOUGH it’s not quite in the same league table as an oil or beer free for all bonanza, many Pattaya homes are set to benefit from government policy on free domestic water for the period August 2008 to January 2009. Mr Chaowalit Salan, chief officer of the provincial waterworks authority, explained that it was

government policy to subsidise water supplies at domestic residences where usage was less than 50,000 litres a month. Although meters will still be read by water officers during the operational period of nearly six months, and bills will still be delivered to addresses, the words “government will take the responsibility” will show

that no payment needs to be made. It was not immediately obvious how the deal will affect householders who pay their water bill by bank transfer or direct debit. Those who rent rooms in condo apartments for 3,000 baht or less per month can also apply to have a free water bill. The registration procedure in Pattaya – the scheme is broadly national – is to visit the water office in Soi Nongprue with a battery of documents which include the rental agreement with the landlord (if any), contract of sale or rent, ID of juristic person and a copy of the latest water bill delivered to the address. The water office in Pattaya confirmed that all applicants for free water must present their documentation for confirmation. “It’s not automatic”, said a public relations official.
