NEW FOCUS EDITOR The South Werrington and North Gunthorpe FOCUS has a new editor. Julia Davidson has joined the team to take the lead in supporting our Liberal Democrat councillor Darren Fower in campaigning for the local area. Originally from London, Julia has lived in Fulbridge Road for 19 years. She has been married for 25 years and has two children – a son who is now in the Army Air Corps and a daughter who is a hair stylist. Both went to Werrington Primary School and then to Walton Comprehensive (now Voyager School). Julia is a full time carer who has previously been a nurse both within the armed forces and the NHS. She is a member of the Gunthorpe Community Association and a firm believer in Julia Davidson – new editor community action. She said: "I've lived in the ward of South Werrington and North Gunthorpe for over 19 years. My husband and I have raised our family here and now I'm looking forward to helping Darren give an even greater voice to local people. “We pay our Council Tax and the Tory-controlled council should be listening to our concerns!"
Liberal Democrat FOCUS Editor New FOCUS editor Julia Davidson has already started campaigning for this would like to see better youth area. She recently held a meeting with Cllr Darren Fower about the standard facilities in this area. of lighting and safety of the footpath off Fulbridge Road that leads through She said: “Youth facilities in this area to Aster Drive. are very poor. If you live near to the Werrington Centre then there is the sports centre etc. But other than that, in terms of a youth centre, out of hours after-school services for 16 year olds and upwards, there's nothing.
Julia said : "There's only one light on this footpath. When the greenery grows this is often covered and sometimes it is just not working. Given that this is a well-used footpath, I think the council should be looking to introduce more lighting at this location." Julia has now asked Darren to notify the council’s neighbourhood manager and local police about this issue in order for some action to be taken.
“SPEND IT OR LOSE IT” – COUNCIL CASH FOR LOCAL GROUPS Would you like to see more trees in your street, or perhaps you are part of a community group which could use a few hundred pounds to fund a much-required service or event? If so, please contact your ward councillor Darren Fower. There are still thousands of pounds left in the local Community Leadership Fund (money which is made available for councillors to spend in their local areas). If it is not spent by 1 April it gets lost! Darren needs your ideas now! One thing Darren won’t be spending the money on is celebrating the Queen’s jubilee. The Torycontrolled city council already plans to spend £30,000 on the celebrations and, on top of that, has suggested councillors may spend some of their Community Leadership Fund on the same thing. Darren said: “My refusal to fund the jubilee has nothing to do with being anti-royalist and everything to do with fairness! There are many deserving local groups that could use this cash. If Tory councillors want to spend taxpayers’ money on the jubilee then it is up to them to justify it.”
GRAFFITI BOARDS Following a call from local Lib Dem councillor Darren Fower, the neighbourhood committee has agreed to look at erecting ‘graffiti boards’ in a number of places. The boards can be used by local ‘graffiti artists’ instead of painting on buildings and other inappropriate places. The money has been made available and now the locations need to be agreed. Darren said: "Graffiti boards have been proved to reduce graffiti elsewhere - and it is a great way to capture the artistic talent of local young people.” If you can think of a location for a graffiti board please The Tories at the city council have made countless errors of judgement, ranging contact Darren or FOCUS Editor from investing in Icelandic banks to introducing fountains to Cathedral Square Julia Davidson.
LIB DEM PLAN TO SCRAP TAX RISE
and paying consultants £1,000 a day in salaries ……. and now they expect you to pay for such mistakes!
Next year the Tories plan to borrow £195 million - more than £1,000 for every person in Peterborough. This will add over £15 million to the council’s budget each year to pay interest and repayment of the loan. That has to be paid for from your Council Tax. So now the council plans to put up your Council Tax by nearly 3 per cent, despite the coalition government offering a grant of over £1.5 million to freeze the tax. The Conservative (yes, that’s the same party as the one that runs Peterborough) Local Government Minister Bob Neill said in a letter to Peterborough City Council: “Hardworking families have to count the pounds and pennies at the end of the month. The last thing they need is to see their Council Tax bill get even bigger.” Local Lib Dem councillor Darren Fower said: “Peterborough Tories are way out of line, wasting millions of pounds of our money and still want to put up our Council Tax. “Increasing tax is an easy way of raising funds for this council’s extravagant ideas. Given the recent announcement that last year alone this council failed to collect £5 million in local taxes, I do not see why people in this area should be expected to consistently put their hand in their pockets. “Lib Dems on the council will propose a budget which will cut out wasteful spending, reduce borrowing, take the extra government grant and have no increase in Council Tax. “At the national level, Liberal Democrats in government have pushed for lower taxes particularly for people on lower incomes. Over the past two years nearly one million people have been taken out of Income Tax completely. “Labour are irrelevant in in Peterborough. The message for local people is that it is the Tories who give you waste and higher taxes and it is the Liberal Democrats who lead on providing a more sensible and affordable alternative.”

DISREGARD FOR BUS PASSENGERS Lib Dem councillor Darren Fower has criticised the “callous disregard” which the council shows bus passengers.
In January and February, in cold weather, people catching a bus in the city centre had to wait in the Ackland Street car park while drainage work was done in Queensgate Bus Station. Passengers had no shelter, no seating, no refreshments, no toilets and little provision for disabled people. There was poor signage and the waiting area was so narrow that people often spilled over into the road. Darren commented: “This is a scandal. This work could have been done in warmer weather. Tory councillors and senior officers don’t use the buses because they get subsidised car parking permits. Yet they expect bus passengers to wait in freezing conditions.”
