A

MAGNIFICENT master suite is the hallmark of the Preston by Ross North Homes, on display in Harrisdale. The impressive doublesized main bedroom features a sumptuous retreat big enough for a couch and a couple of armchairs, plus a deluxe ensuite with a freestanding bath. “Most people are looking for affordable luxury,” says Ken Nair, sales and marketing manager at Ross North Homes. “They want the feel of five-star but they don’t want to have to pay the earth for it.” With a price tag of just over $300,000, big light-filled rooms and an impressive line-up of standard inclusions, the Preston certainly delivers. Ross North Homes has several homes on display with large open-plan master suites in response to demand from today’s buyers, but the parents’ quarters in the Preston are arguably the most impressive of them all. As well as boasting supersize proportions, the bedroom features a bank of built-in wardrobes behind sliding doors and a large recess perfect for a dressing table or chest of drawers. Ken says buyers like the flexibility of being able to enjoy the gardens from the bedroom so the builder has added sliding doors opening to the alfresco, encouraging parents to sit outside with a coffee or a book. To add an extra air of luxury and emphasise the sheer size of the master suite, the builder has also added a recessed ceiling. A cut-out in the wall between the bedroom and ensuite underlines open-plan styling, while the twin vanities, statement bath and large shower reflect many a buyer’s wish list.

“The inspiration for the ensuite was to provide space and comfort with a touch of luxury and class,” Ken says. The rest of the house has been considerately zoned to provide spaces for family time, entertainment and relaxation. “The areas are well defined for Mum and Dad, and a zone for the kids with their own activity room,” Ken says. A crisp white kitchen anchors the everyday living spaces. “Space in a kitchen is very important, as is flow and design,” Ken says. The kitchen features a stone-topped island bench with integrated breakfast bar, a doubledoor pantry, wide stainless steel cooking appliances and overhead cupboards. There is also a door off the kitchen direct to a veranda at the side of the home. Ken says this second outdoor living space is perfect for the barbecue or an outdoor kitchen with a hotplate and wok so that cooking smells can be kept out of the house. “For that reason people prefer to cook outdoors and with our beautiful weather why wouldn’t they?” he says. As displayed, the Preston will appeal to discerning second and third-time homebuyers looking for both space and specification. “The brief was to design a family home that fitted the narrower and shallower blocks that are being produced without it looking cramped,” Ken says. For buyers with a tighter budget or a smaller block to work with, Ross North Homes has developed two alternative versions of the home starting at $183,290. Paula Evans

Shannon’s tips of the week TIP 1: There can be a moment of panic if you’re eating outside, with food laid out over a tablecloth and there’s a big gust of wind. If you are using a tablecloth on an outdoor setting, use wind clips or table weights. The clips are either plastic or metal and slide against the edge of the table to secure the tablecloth. Table weights are attached to the edge of the tablecloth to hold it down. TIP 2: If you need to cut a hole in a tablecloth for a patio umbrella, position the tablecloth and mark where the umbrella sits. Cut the hole with scissors, then cut little slots around the hole, fanning out like the sun’s rays. Fold the little pieces underneath the hole and place iron-on hemming tape in between the two layers of cloth. Apply an iron on the hottest setting the cloth can withstand to set the tape and this will stop the edge fraying.

Q&A We have an old classic boat with vinyl Q covers that are seriously stained on the inside. Do you have a solution for removing these water stains as I feel bleach would damage the vinyl eventually.

The best way to clean vinyl is to use a mixture A of glycerine and talcum powder. Place two tablespoons of glycerine and two tablespoons of natural talcum powder (the cheapest stuff available) and mix them together thoroughly in a small dish. You will end up with a paste that is the consistency of spreadable butter. Rub a small amount of the paste, using a rolled-up pair of pantyhose, over the vinyl and leave it for 5 minutes before polishing it back off. This not only cleans the vinyl but keeps it in good condition. I tried to remove a food stain, which Q was probably tomato-based, from a white, 100 per cent combed-cotton cardigan. Unfortunately, I didn’t read the washing instructions – which says “Do not bleach” – so when I couldn’t remove the stain with Preen and Velvet washing soap I tried White King on it. I now have a yellow patch all around the area and having then unsuccessfully tried Sard Wonder Soap. I am now stuck with my mistake.

The yellow mark is actually a burn mark from A the bleach because the bleach that you used contained chlorine. You can remove that char mark by using a different kind of bleach. Put one tablespoon of 3 per cent peroxide solution into a bucket of warm water. Place the cardigan into the water and cover it with a dinner plate to hold it completely submerged

Hi! Shannon here again to help you with your domestic disasters. – that way you won’t get tide marks. Leave the cardigan overnight and in the morning rinse out with clean, warm water and a small amount of normal bathroom soap – not laundry soap. Dry it flat in the shade, on a towel. In future, if you have a tomato-based stain, all you need to do is wipe it with white vinegar and leave it in the sunshine. The ultraviolet light just leaches it away.

Thanks for all your great questions this week. Keep them coming and keep them specific. To work out how to remove a stain, I need three pieces of information. I need to know what the stain is made of; what surface it’s on (Is there a varnish? What is the topmost surface that the stain is affecting?); and what, if anything, you’ve already tried to remove it. Each thing you try changes the chemical composition of the stain. Include a photograph if you can. Photographs really help the stain diagnosis. Don’t forget, alternative recycling questions are also welcome.

If your pet is posing a few problems, it is important to make a few changes in the way you think and act to remain in control

D

URING my years as a dog behaviour consultant, I have learnt that many dog owners are confronted with similar challenges when it comes to their canine companions. This week, let’s talk about “training the trainer”, where the human perspective of dog ownership is examined. I hope to show that by making some small changes in the way you think and act, you can improve not only the quality of your own life, but also that of your much loved pet.

Here are some ideas to get you thinking positively: BE PROACTIVE Whatever your objective is at the moment, having the ability to be take action is vital. Start now and accomplish goals that you keep putting off. For example, take your dog to training, go for more walks, seek help with any behaviour issues or compete in a dog sport.

POSITIVE MINDSET While positive thinking alone isn’t going to solve your dog’s particular problems, it will provide you with the necessary drive to take proactive steps towards achieving your goals. For example, if your dog is an embarrassment when walking on the lead, you may worry about what others think and

avoid going out in public. Dismiss this negative thinking and do what it takes to get you and your dog happily out and about.

TAKE CONTROL Although you can’t control every event that happens, you can manage what the event means to you. Stress leads to fear, but once you feel more in command, your feelings change. Rather than focusing on what upsets you and repeatedly talking about the problem, focus instead on the solution. If you’re challenged by a particular problem with your dog, rather than concentrating on how bad it is, focus on what you can do to change the situation to the best of your ability and your dog’s capability.

CHOOSE YOUR THOUGHTS AND WORDS CAREFULLY

SET REALISTIC GOALS

Think just as carefully about your internal dialogue as well as what you express externally. You may be talking to yourself in a way that doesn’t serve you well. Rather than saying things such as, “I’m such a lazy dog owner”, substitute your thinking with, “I’m a responsible and caring dog owner”. Instead of saying, “My new dog isn’t as good as my last one”, a better declaration is, “I’m grateful that my new dog is teaching me new lessons about dog behaviour”. An attitude of gratitude can work wonders.

It’s important to have a desirable end result in mind with your dog. This gives you the necessary drive and determination to visualise the result, rather than aimlessly dabbling around. Set an initial goal that is believable – one that can actually be realised. For example, if your dog doesn’t like other dogs, your initial goal may be to make it fun for them to see dogs from afar, as opposed to having your pet interacting with a group of dogs. Group interaction may be realistic for some dogs, but it may not be for yours.

What does having access to the National Broadband Network mean for your new home? RiverStone director Paul Marshall spells out what to expect and what you need to do

T

HE National Broadband Network is promising a brave new world of digital services and entertainment. Eventually, the network will encompass most Australian homes and certainly those living in Perth should all be served by this new infrastructure. But having it attached to your house does not mean you can just plug and go with the new level of service. Most of the current promises for benefits revolve around HD entertainment and video interactive services. The most compelling example of these type of services is medical consultations between people in remote locations and specialists. But none of that will work with WiFi or old Cat 5 computer cables – to access these services you need to have Cat 6 cables laid throughout your home. So for existing homeowners without Cat 6

cabling, you will need to look at retrofitting these cables to run from the NBN box on the exterior wall of your home to the equipment inside. That is, of course, assuming you have a desire to access the higher level of service available from the NBN. If you decide you do want those services and you have a single-storey home, this will not be too much of a problem. New cables can be laid easily enough through your roof space. However, if you have a multi-level home then re-cabling will be more problematic as a retrofit. You will need specialist advice from a structured cabling company. All homeowners will need to do an assessment of their needs once the service arrives on their street and decide how much bandwidth you are going to need from the new service. That will then determine if you need to upgrade your cabling or whether you can live with your existing infrastructure.

The things you currently do on the internet will all still be quicker on the NBN even if you choose not to access high-bandwidth services. Prices are predicted to be similar to current high-speed services on offer. If that proves to be true, the new services available are likely to be rather compelling for many people. As always though, getting an exact comparison will be difficult, so you will need to assess the offers being made by your internet service provider carefully before you sign up. People either currently building or expecting to commence over the next couple of years need to ensure they make allowance for connecting to the NBN. No one in a new home should be running anything but Cat 6 cabling from now on. However, some “smart wiring” packages being offered in the market only include Cat 5 cabling, so you need to check your contract details and make sure you have Cat 6. It is

more expensive but even if you do not intend to take advantage of the new services you will need to consider resale and the benefits of having this cabling in place. Secondly, you need to ensure you lay the Cat 6 cable all the way to the likely point of attachment for the NBN box. For technical reasons, the fibre optic cable cannot be turned through tight bends once it reaches the house. In addition, many houses today include a dedicated hub box such as the Clipsal StarServe. The location of this hub is usually somewhere within the home and not near the attachment point so cabling of the right size and quality also needs to be laid from the point of attachment to the StarServe or similar box. NBN is currently being rolled out in parts of Applecross, Victoria Park and Mandurah, along with a number of regional areas. Suburbs around these initial developments are slated to start using the service within 12 months.

It will, of course, take some time before all suburbs have access to the network, with even significant areas such as Claremont, Rossmoyne, Bicton, Malaga, Beeliar and many other heavily populated suburbs not even scheduled to begin construction within three years. New estates are different. Even developments within areas not planned to receive the general roll-out any time soon will have NBN infrastructure installed as the estate is developed. Depending on when the development began, NBN cabling may be pre-installed in your new estate, so access to the NBN will be immediately available once your home is complete. You can find out from your estate developer if it will be available in your area or you can go online to www.nbn.gov.au to track the roll-out schedule. The NBN website is full of information on how the roll-out is progressing and what to expect from the service. Like all governmentrun enterprises, however, I would take everything they say with a small grain of salt.

HEN you’re building on one of today’s narrower blocks, it makes sense to focus on the rooms you use the most. Three-bedroom homes with a versatile extra living or bedroom space are therefore becoming a popular option, especially with buyers looking to downsize. “With the increasing amount of narrow home sites in new communities, we have found that homebuyers are reassessing the amount of space they need in a home,” says Tony Harvie, brand manager at National Homes. “A three-bedroom home with a study or home theatre allows you to keep the bedrooms at a great size and include features such as walk-in wardrobes, while also having a retreat area – other than the main living space – that you can use as you please.” The Viceroy by National Homes is a great example. One of two three-bedroom homes the builder has on display, it includes a goodsized office that could just as easily become an activity room, second sitting room, theatre room or even a fourth bedroom. “The Viceroy is being visited and loved by homebuyers at all stages of life, but particularly by those who are ready to downsize from a traditional-sized, four-bedroom home, but upgrade the quality and specification,” Tony says.

With a price tag of just over $270,000 for the display version with all the trimmings and a starting price of $199,990, there’s plenty of scope for buyers to tailor the Viceroy to fit their budget. Inspired by the luxury Viceroy Snowmass hotel in Aspen, Colorado, the Viceroy blends function with wow-factor features, while interiors by Coco Republic emphasise warmth, substance and comfort. “Our design team created this home to make the most of natural energy and light, as well as providing a sophisticated design that would have aspirational appeal for homebuyers,” Tony says. On display in the Honeywood Estate in Wandi, the home features fabulous high raking ceilings running through the open-plan living area and out to the alfresco. “Inside, the raking ceilings give a sense of height and space that is synonymous with the luxury of the Viceroy hotel, while the highlight windows flood the area with natural light,” Tony says. “Continuing this design feature through into the alfresco creates a sense of unity between indoors and out, which is consistent with the design brief of making the most of the natural surroundings in the Honeywood Estate.” Overlooking the main living area is a contemporary kitchen with an adjoining scullery. With a second sink, plenty of extra benchtop

and lots of cupboards, plus space to hide the fridge/freezer, this is the second preparation and storage area today’s discerning buyers are looking for. The designers at National Homes have introduced hotel-style luxury into the master suite, adding in a reading corner and sliding doors from the bedroom to a private courtyard. There are two sets of fitted wardrobes behind mirrored sliding doors and a chic ensuite with a large shower tucked behind a double vanity unit. Taking more inspiration from its Aspen namesake, the Viceroy boasts a welcoming front facade that teams natural elements such as timber and stone with neutral render and a large pivot door with glass inserts. SLENDER SPLENDOUR Moving from a spacious Californian bungalow-style dwelling to a compact, lock-up-and-leave home has changed the way the owners of this Shenton Park property live, but they just love it

OOD things come in small packages – at least for the owners of this Shenton Park home, which was designed to purposefully engage with their lifestyle and take inspiration from its location. According to Andrew Hagemann of Fringe Architects, the house is surrounded by a large number of smaller, traditional houses and weatherboard villas. “We picked up on design cues in this precinct to inspire the new design, so the resultant house has a strong link to its locality,” he says. The owners, who originally lived in a sprawling Californian bungalow-style home in Wembley with their three teenage boys, were looking for something to mesh with their current stage in life. “They wanted to create a new home to suit a downsized lifestyle where they could lock and leave the house while they travelled overseas,” Andrew says. “The design also needed to allow for low maintenance and provision for their three sons to live there intermittently.” The compact home mixes a traditional facade and contemporary architecture in order to create a functional space within the small site. “Through intricate and clever planning we have realised a large number of uses within a small building,” Andrew says. “It includes features such as building storage into external wall reveals, creating study

recesses and setting up sitting areas throughout the house to maximise on floor space. “This design idea is sewn together by the clever use of controlling daylight throughout the house. “Effectively every room has an interesting view or a link to another space visually. You stretch what the human eye sees.” And whatever the season, this residence also remains cosy with the use of “green” building techniques. “The majority of the house is constructed of lightweight timber framing and cladding with some thermal mass brickwork,” Andrew explains. “The heavily insulated lightweight framing allows rooms to be of maximum

size as well as allowing for speed of erection during the construction process.” But most importantly, according to Andrew, the owners love their new abode as it is very modern and has changed the way they live. “They love the connection it has with the surrounding streetscape and neighbourhood,” Andrew says. “The house allows them to entertain, be part of the neighbourhood, be private when they need to be, and it performs well by supporting the whole family.” Alyesha Anderson ✱ This home is an entrant in the WA Architecture Awards in the Residential Architecture – Houses, Small Project Architecture and Mondoluce Lighting Award categories.

ARBECUES and pizza parties can still be on the agenda this winter, as the Stoneleigh by Dale Alcock Homes demonstrates. A fabulous kitchen and larder coupled with a double-sized alfresco linked to the dining room and games room makes this Landsdale display home the perfect host whatever the weather. In a nod to the market gardens that used to dominate the area, the builder has also included a vegie patch in the back garden and a herb garden outside the larder to highlight the focus on food and friends. Bifolding windows and an extended section of kitchen benchtop create a servery between the kitchen and the alfresco, while the built-in barbecue and the pizza oven offer inspirational ideas for would-be buyers. Cameron Lade, sales and marketing manager at Dale Alcock Homes, says the Stoneleigh is definitely a home for entertaining. He says it’s also a versatile design based on a simple floor plan that really works. The spine of the home runs from the double entrance doors at the front right through to the kids’ wing at the back, while the living room, dining room and alfresco run across the middle of the house. “This enabled us to achieve the zoning really easily,” Cameron says. “It’s clearly the kids’ zone at the back of the home and the parents’ zone at the front of the home, and then everyone comes together in the middle to share time and enjoy a meal together.

“The cross-access design also lends itself really well to cross-ventilation.” With the focus firmly on the kitchen in the Stoneleigh, the designers have worked with a galley-style layout and added a larder at one end. As well as double ovens, a glass splashback, a wide cooktop and flush-fitting range hood, there is heaps of stone workbench and no fewer than 22 drawers. With open shelves and yet more cupboards in the larder, there’s certainly no shortage of storage. “A lot of focus is being put on kitchens these days,” Cameron says. High ceilings have been used throughout the games area, living area and entry, and have even been carried through into the master bedroom and ensuite. Conscious that the door to the main bedroom is off the entry hallway, the designers have given the master suite its own vestibule for a greater sense of privacy. Cameron says this foyer space could easily be absorbed into the dressing room instead. As today’s buyers are usually reluctant to compromise on the design of the master suite, especially if they are building their second or third home, the builder has made the main bedroom particularly large. The ensuite reflects the open style that many buyers favour but, like the dressing room, it can be closed off with doors if buyers prefer a little more privacy. It’s been designed with family living in mind, but the Stoneleigh has also been a hit with empty-nesters who relish the extra space when the kids and grandkids come to stay. Some buyers have removed the wall between the dining room and the games room and opened up the space like a “great room”. “When the floor plan is quite simple it’s easy to convert rooms or adapt rooms or change things slightly without completely changing the integrity of the design and what it was planned to do,” Cameron says. LIGHTING THE WAY Architect John Lewis was given a good deal of free rein when it came to creating this singlestorey Bicton home that balances light and space for a growing family

T

HIS contemporary Australian home was built to accommodate a large active family and was designed to reect their relaxed and minimalist attitude towards interior design. The main intention was that it would still be suitable when the owners’ children become teenagers, and it incorporates simple yet effective architectural techniques. In order to achieve their vision, the owners teamed up with John Lewis, from John Lewis Architects, to design their home in Bicton. “The clients wanted a single-storey house, which gives you fewer elements to play with in terms of creating an interest in architectural form. And with a relatively at site, that’s hard to do,â€? says John. “The brief called for a lot of space – there are ďŹ ve beds plus a study – so it was about how you can put that together in a form that lets you bring light in.â€? The answer was to incorporate intelligent design ideas, such as an internal enclosure and a striking cantilevered, split-pitch skillion roof. “The central courtyard was quite an

important design feature as it enables the light to get into the centre of the home,� John says. “The roof was also designed to open out to northern sunlight and enable light to enter this section of the house.� Although much of the design was dictated by the need to let in lots of natural light, the needs of the children also played an important part in the decision-making. “We had a vision that while the kids were playing outside, we could also see them from an open-plan kitchen and living area,� says owner Peta McVittie. John adds: “The kitchen needed to be the command centre of the house. From the kitchen, you can survey the games room and outdoor areas.� The house has separate wings for the parents and children while the living spaces to the rear overlook the pool and backyard. The style of the residence, however, needed to be a lot more sophisticated, the owners say. “A mix of timbers was used to keep with a neutral and clean feel,� Peta says. “I like minimal – I don’t like clutter – and I like things to be sharp and clean.� John took on the task of styling the dwelling,

incorporating a neutral colour palette and simple furnishings. “It’s a family home so we used palettes such as timber and neutral materials to warm things up a bit,� he says. John says working on the project and having Peta and her husband, Paul, as clients was a joy as he was given a considerable amount of free rein in terms of the design and style. “It’s a nice, easy-living family home that is designed with a reasonable amount of timelessness,� he says. “It has elegant forms but in a nice practical package that comes together without being too ostentatious.� Alyesha Anderson

Master Builders director Michael McLean looks at some of the factors that may be contributing towards declining housing affordability and offers some solutions

OUSING is a critical part of the Australian economic and social fabric and as a nation we have one of the highest rates of home ownership in the world. According to statistics, 68 per cent of Australians currently own, or are in the process of buying, their home and for older residents – those aged 65 and above – the home ownership rate is about 82 per cent. The high rate of home ownership and strong public policy commitment over many years by governments of both major political parties to help us own our own place has enriched Australia both in economic and social terms. Owning a home is an integral part of Australia’s social make-up and wellbeing and it is important that affordable housing is within reach for everyone. However, the cost of a family home has increasingly become unattainable due to a number of reasons, which have contributed to many households not achieving this goal.

At the same time, there is a substantial and growing imbalance between demand and supply for housing in Australia – one where the demand for housing has consistently outstripped supply, a situation that looks likely to continue for the foreseeable future. According to the Federal Government’s National Housing Supply Council, the “housing gap” is expected to rise from a cumulative shortfall of about 158,500 dwellings in 2009, to 328,900 dwellings in 2015 and potentially to more than 640,000 dwellings by 2030 unless meaningful changes to existing policies and practices by all tiers of government are taken. While there is no single silver bullet that would easily resolve the housing affordability problem confronting many ordinary Australians, governments have a number of policy tools at their disposal to alleviate affordability concerns.

EAKING roofs are a common complaint during winter, in particular in new homes that are being tested by the rain for the first time. Leaks can be caused by either a construction problem, lack of maintenance by the owner, or both.

Some of the construction issues that can be the cause of roof leaks include: ✱ Valley flashing not wide enough ✱ Flashing pulled away from walls ✱ Flashing wrongly overlapped or fixed

incorrectly

✱ Insufficient angle on guttering to drain water ✱ On metal deck roofs, incorrect or insufficient

“damming” of the ridges, which with extreme wind will cause water ingress under the roof

✱ On a tiled roof, cracked tiles are generally

the problem. After the builder has left, the installation of TV antennae or airconditioning may damage or crack the tiles. Sometimes, displaced tiles are not replaced correctly. Builders will respond to call-outs by clients to inspect a roof and attempt to discover the cause of a leak. This is often difficult as invariably the roof is not leaking when the builder arrives. Only a trial-and-error process can reveal the underlying cause of the problem. An experienced builder will investigate the usual suspects and repairs will be done to rectify any problems identified. Where there are structural causes, the builder is responsible for faulty and defective workmanship for up to six years after practical completion.

Problems later down the track caused by inadequate maintenance – i.e. failure to clean gutters and downpipes – can result in water overflow into eaves and ceilings, creating stains, bubbling paint and mould. Regular maintenance and inspection by the owner can eliminate these causes and effects of roof leaks. Check what the building insurance policy you have obtained covers as generally damage caused must be due to a single incident – for example, a heavy storm – but if the building is not maintained and the resulting damage is due to neglect or poor maintenance practices, an expensive repair of a collapsed ceiling will need to be covered at the owner’s expense.

We are just about to move in to our recently completed house. Any tips for us? Moving in to a brand-new home is an exciting experience that can be soured by poor planning and a lack of attention to detail. On many occasions, I have been contacted by new homeowners frustrated that, for example, cornice cracks have appeared, a cabinet drawer is stuck or a light is faulty. When “practical completion” occurs, the home is habitable and fit for occupation, but this does not mean that everything will be perfect from day one. Just like when you buy a new car, minor defects can emerge. Cornice cracking is very common as the building settles and similar maintenance items that you discover in your first weeks of occupation will be attended to by the builder at the end of the three or four-month defects period. You should make a list of the defects while living in the home so that nothing is missed when it comes time for your builder to attend to them. Ongoing maintenance by the homeowner is essential for some household items. For example, constant vigilance is necessary against termite damage in addition to the builder’s initial treatment. Regular gutter cleaning is also necessary to maximise the life of the roof gutters. Ideally, new homeowners should also make provision and set aside funds for everyday items that a newly completed home will not usually include. For example, your old furniture may look odd in your new home and may need replacing. Make sure in your early planning phase that your measurements for ovens, dishwashers and refrigerators are accurate so your existing appliances fit into the new space provided. Also ensure that you have completed warranty forms on all whitegoods, such as washing machines and hot-water units, and that you have sufficient home and contents insurance in place.The builder’s insurance expires on handover of the property so it is important that you have organised this in advance. Make sure that you keep sufficient touch-up paint and spare floor, wall and roof tiles on hand. Don’t just throw out all building materials in making your home perfect. T may sound simplistic, but a well-organised home can make a huge difference to family life. But little did Sarah know that she would get the opportunity to run her very own cornerstore, filled with all the things she loves, as quickly as she did. BEAUTY IN DIVERSITY Trevor Cochrane chooses 10 of his favourite plants to make a garden look great in spring. He will pick 10 more next week

S

PRING should be full of colour and fragrance. While the two are not necessarily experienced each time you visit a garden, the combination is intoxicating to the senses in a way that resonates deep in your mind, bringing feelings of happiness whenever memories re-emerge. That’s probably why fond recollections of a parent, grandparent or favourite friend revolve around the environment they created, the place you felt happiest with them in. And by planting the garden with lots of flowering spring plants now, you can enjoy semi-established colourful displays, which will make the world of difference to your results this September. The key to a beautiful garden in my mind is plant diversity because of the interest it creates for the visitor’s eye. Growing a wide selection of plants that flower, deliver foliage texture or grow at different times of the year brings variety. You don’t have to be a garden lover or a green-thumb to be excited to see jacarandas bloom, see the jonquils and their sister daffodils burst into cheery flower, and navel oranges hanging like bright lanterns against their dark green foliage.

might say, but these large lilies produce the most exquisite clusters of large spiderlike flowers on huge stems that are easily cut and used in vases. Fairy magnolia blush is a new plant bred in New Zealand that does exceptionally well in home garden environments. While it might not seem much of a plant in a pot, it is truly amazing as it matures and is trimmed to fill out. Jasminum polyanthum is possibly the most amazing of all jasmine as its late-winter/ early-spring bloom and perfume are truly breathtaking. Be warned that this is not a jasmine for a small garden if you are susceptible to too much fragrance. English May (Spiraea cantoniensis) is an old favourite that deserves a serious comeback as it delivers more than most plants could. Its white flowers are born in clusters that run up and down the stems of the plant to the extent that they weigh them down, developing a weeping, drooping effect on mature plants. This is a must-have shrub for home gardens as it’s drought hardy, cold hardy and overdelivers on its promise of flowers. Star magnolia (Magnolia stellata) is in my mind one of those plants everyone should find the right spot for in their garden. Its late-winter/early-spring flower show is simply gorgeous as large star blooms smother the plant, delivering displays for as long as the weather remains coolish. The rest of the time it makes a wonderful compact shrub with light green foliage. Azalea have been on the money for people with drought-affected gardens but there is little doubt they offer one of the very best flower displays of any plant. The key to success: soil moisture consistency. In other words, not drying out, then being wet. They come in a wide range of colours, with

some of the newer varieties bred for pest and disease resistance, and some have the ability to flower all year round. ✱ Volunteer camellia is without doubt one of the most understated new release plants of the last decade.Those who have one know that winter and early spring sees flowers in shades of pink produced in large volumes. ✱ Geraldton wax (Chamelaucium uncinatum) is one native that just gets better with breeding. Driven by huge demand in the cut-flower industry, this late-winter/ early-spring sweetheart comes in a range of colours, flower types and shrub sizes meaning there’s pretty much a plant for every garden situation. The prerequisite for success with these hardy natives is freedraining soils and a sunny spot. ✱ Brown boronia (Boronia megastigma) is something not everyone will be able to grow. Unfortunately, 90 per cent of these plants die within the first year they are added to the garden and usually because they are allowed to dry out. While it is more difficult to enjoy success with this plant, it’s worth it if you can find the right spot with heavier soil because the scent is beautiful. Charmaine Jones es asks asks, via email email, why her figs drop before they ripen. The fig tree is growing in the ground but she has read that they often do better in pots. Also, she gets many figs but they don’t ripen – they get to the stage where they are softening but inside they are not red. The tree has been in her yard since she bought the house, and she has had three seasons of the figs dropping and not ripening now. The fig is likely a seedling and you may never get perfect fruit although it should at times be OK. The issue with figs is primarily that the fruit as we see it is actually the flower. It does not always get to the point that it needs to ripen for us to eat it. I get two distinct fruit sets in the year with my white adriatic – one where the fruits appear and never become soft and sweet to eat before falling, and then immediately after they have fallen another fruit set where

My th it are fine, soft ft and dd li i M suggestion is if you love figs, buy a variety from your local garden centre and enjoy consistent cropping – adam, white adriatic and brown turkey are tried and proven performers in Perth with mouth-wateringly delicious fruit. Carole Montgomery writes, via email, that she needs help with her palm. It has gone brown in the last couple of months and before that it was glorious. The palm gets full sun most of the day and is watered three times a week with the retic for 15 minutes via a dripper. She wants to know if the dying head should be cut, and if another will grow in its place. Unfortunately, palms cannot be pruned by removing the head or crown of the plant. It’s unusual for them to deteriorate as described and I’m afraid I recommend removal altogether as it sounds diseased.

Windsurfing trailer

I’m a compulsive windsurfer and it’s the primary reason I moved permanently to WA 10 years ago. Packed with boards and sails, I drive my trailer all over, sailing Esperance, Margaret River, Geraldton and – when I have time – tackling the big waves a thousand kilometres north at Gnaraloo station.

Script for The Beast and the Beauty As a television director, I was

never going to direct a stage play until I read the script for The Beast and the Beauty. It’s written by my mate and Hollywood writer David Stevens, who also wrote Breaker Morant, Merlin and The Sum of Us. He has penned a great Aussie yarn which I’m directing for my theatre debut. 3 My beach To fuel my windsurfing obsession I live on a quiet, pristine beach in Rockingham where I can sail outside my front door. I can see the beach from my desk, so when the whitecaps appear, I stop work and head out to skip across the water for an hour or three. 4 Margarita recipe In Acapulco, when visiting my mate David Stevens, I was introduced to Margaritte, a tough ol’ Texan gal and the inspiration behind her tequilafuelled drink. Her recipe: 2 shots of tequila, 2 shots of Cointreau, 2 shots of lime juice, plus a dash of lime cordial – and drink ’til you’re under the table. 5 Scratched camphor dining table When directing at the MovieWorld studios on the Gold Coast, I was filming in a paddock when I discovered a weathered timber slab cut from a camphor tree. Being a soft wood, it creases and dents easily, but

I love these imperfections. It’s testament to good conversation and fine meals. 6 Bottled bishop I found him in a gallery while producing at Television New Zealand in the late ’70s, and he’s followed me around ever since. Now living in my kitchen, many guests are concerned I might serve him up for dinner. But not so far. I think he still needs more marinating! 7 Letterman jacket Being raised in Africa, my sport was soccer. On moving to California, I attended Occidental College, along with Barack Obama, and played four years, earning my letterman jacket, which I still wear with pride. After graduating, I continued semi-pro in LA, then later in Melbourne before the knees gave up. 8 Guild D40 guitar In the late ’60s I performed in coffee houses in LA and Melbourne for loose change and all the coffee I could drink. As I got thinner, I realised I needed a more lucrative career. Now fatter, the only time I play is n. with Jon English – when he’s in town. 9 Rogues gallery Plastered over the he walls of my study are cast and crew photos sion from more than 800 hours of television mories I’ve produced or directed. Magic memories ng from shows such as The Box, The Flying on, Doctors, The Sullivans, The Black Stallion, ore. Flipper, Ocean Girl and many, many more. 10 Gramophone Along with his lovee of the sea, my dad passed his old wind-up up gramophone on to me and, along with th it, fond family memories of playing the he old 78s.
