HE Monroe by Celebration Homes has been a hit with buyers looking for a stylish affordable home, but it was the quality of the construction that impressed the judges of this year’s Master Builders Bankwest Housing Excellence Awards. Impressed by everything from the standard of the cabinets to the cornices, the judges have declared it Overall Best Display Home for 2012. The Monroe beat stiff competition from more than 160 contenders across all display home categories, ranging from budget-beating homes priced at less than $160,000 to featurepacked showcases with price tags of more than $650,000. A roomy four-bedroom, family-friendly home, the Monroe was also named best display in the $170,000 to $190,000 category. “The design brief for the Monroe display was to deliver a contemporary and spacious family home that has versatile living space and

HIS eco-friendly retreat in Dwellingup has helped Cachet Homes win the prestigious title of Best New Builder for 2012. Faced with a challenging site overlooking a lake, the Mandurah-based builder demonstrated strict attention to detail and a commitment to construction excellence, fighting off tough competition from other newcomers to the housing industry. It’s the first full “eco” home for Cachet, which builds between 50 and 60 properties a year, and the builder is confident it ticks all the eco-friendly boxes without sacrificing any creature comforts. A thermally efficient, timber-framed home, it’s been designed to take full advantage of

both the orientation and the natural beauty of its rural setting. “The house is built on a sloping site where it abuts a man-made dam, which presented a few obvious challenges,” says Cliff Kearns, one of the directors at Cachet. The remote location meant the co-ordination of trades and deliveries was paramount, while the large rocks below the surface presented initial challenges when it came to ensuring engineering requirements were met. “The earthworks were imperative to the success of the build due to the site conditions,” Cliff says. “The timber frame, MasterWall cladding, internal gyprock and external texture coat on

this job are a true testament to what can be achieved in remote areas.” About a quarter of the homes Cachet builds are timber-framed designs. Achieving an 8-star energy rating, the house shows passive-solar design in action. It takes advantage of northern light, while large Aneeta sashless windows on the northern elevation capture cooling breezes across the lake in the hottest months of the year. Cliff says the concept works in reverse through louvres when the winds are from the southwest. “The shaded western side incorporates a large alfresco area for coolness in the summer and a calculated eave overhang to maximise the

winter sun while restricting hot summer rays,” he says. The three-bedroom house features high performance Bradford R6.0 insulation batts and a heat-pump gas hot-water unit, and it generates more electricity than it uses, thanks to a 3.4kW Solar Tracker system. “The home generates its own energy and is completely self-sufficient during daylight hours, needing to draw no energy from the grid,” Cliff says. A feature stone fireplace in the living area has been centrally positioned for maximum heating efficiency. A rain bank catchment system and stormwater feed the dam, while an Aquarius septic

LEXIBLE designs, promotional packages, adaptable speciďŹ cations and alternative oor plans are helping buyers create a new home that suits both their lifestyle and their budget. Gemmill Homes is among the Perth project home builders ensuring today’s buyers have plenty of choice, with many clients using a display home as the starting point for a tailormade design. The owners of this country-style residence built by Gemmill in Lower Chittering used a display home 100km away in Baldivis as their inspiration. Working closely with Gemmill on the oor plan, elevation and ďŹ t-out, they were able to build an affordable home that offered all the style and space they were looking for. Peter Webb, acting sales manager at Gemmill, says budget usually dictates whether clients prefer to work with a “what you see is what you getâ€? display speciďŹ cation or start with a blank sheet of paper. “All builders will have a display speciďŹ cation that will be at the higher end of their price range,â€? Peter says. “They will also have cheaper ranges of homes that will sometimes give the client a better starting point.â€? He says second and third-time buyers are more likely to start at the higher display level speciďŹ cation. First homebuyers on the other hand would usually start from the lower price point and work their way up to their budget ďŹ gure, prioritising their needs and wants as they go. Peter says a display home also presents buyers with an opportunity to get a real sense of how their new home will look and feel.

“By starting off with a display home they can get the general overall feel of their home even after they have made the changes they deem necessary to suit their own particular lifestyle,â€? he says. Common changes are making rooms bigger or smaller or swapping them about. Named this year’s Most Affordable Family Home in the Master Builders Bankwest Housing Excellence Awards, this country-style house was based on a former Gemmill display home, the Norfolk. One of the standout features the young family added to the original design is the extensive veranda that runs around the house. There’s also an alfresco for outdoor entertaining, plus a third garage for all-important extra storage. Inside, a large open-plan living area adjoins a contemporary kitchen with two-tone cabinetry and glass splashbacks, while the large home theatre with its cinema-style seating provides a second lounge or relaxation space. “Gemmill is very exible when it comes to making changes to its display homes,â€? Wholagan Building Inspiration took three years to build this multi-million-dollar Yallingup stunner, but the superb craftsmanship and quality finishes made it this year’s Best Country Home

A

ONE-OF-A-KIND luxury hideaway in Yallingup has been crowned this year’s Best Country Home. Built by Wholagan Building Inspiration, the lavish South-West residence battled it out against a field of strong contenders from four other regions to take the coveted trophy. The judges agreed the multi-million-dollar home displayed superb craftsmanship in every facet of its construction, from the helipad and tai chi room, to the mosaic-tiled infinity-edge pool and the handcrafted curved walls made from Kimberley stone. Describing the home as “incomparable”, Geoff Bosustow, regional manager for Master Builders South-West, says it’s the result of a special chemistry between the client, the builder and architect Theo Mathews from Mathews Johnston Architects. “This spectacular residence is testament to the high level of quality craftsmanship that was undertaken to achieve the vision of the owner and architect,” Geoff says. Perched on a natural outcrop high above the valley, the project presented logistical challenges from the outset. Not only was there a steep valley incline and granite outcrops to contend with, the site could only be accessed via a gravel road and a winding driveway.

Both the owners and the project team were anxious to protect the fragile environment and Geoff says compromise was never an option. The finishes in the home, which took three years to build, are precision perfect and the materials first-class. “The residence makes a concerted use of natural materials, including beautiful SouthWest timbers for the flooring and imported teak on the decks and curved balustrades,” Geoff says. Natural granite salvaged from the site was used to create the exterior staircases and landscaped retaining walls, while the Kimberley stone used to create the home’s stunning curved features was also handcrafted on site. “This complex residential project demanded a close relationship between architect, builder and supervisor to ensure the highest result was achieved,” Geoff says. “Numerous refinements to the design during construction posed many challenges that were able to be addressed with competency and great initiative and in a thorough manner at all times.” Offering a whopping 900sq m of internal space, the home includes covered outdoor entertaining areas on the upper level, an outdoor kitchen, sauna, meditation zone,

studio and four-car garage. It also boasts a separate guesthouse. Sharing the limelight at the Master Builders Bankwest Housing Excellence Awards were the four finalists who topped the honours table in their respective regions. Warren Bennett Homes was the best of the best in the Great Southern region with a luxury home in Albany featuring a glass walkway. In the Geraldton-Midwest region, Rogers Building Contractors won the top accolade for a contemporary residence that mixes natural materials such as timber and stone with polished concrete floors and a chef-style kitchen featuring stainless steel benchtops. Beautiful views of the Bay of Esperance were the inspiration for the winning two-storey home built by B.D. Partington Building Contractors in the Kalgoorlie-Esperance region, while Colin Wilkinson Developments took the top spot in the Kimberley-Pilbara with a stunning Bali-inspired, energy-efficient home in Broome. URING the process of transforming their own home kitchen, Wanda Bresa and her husband, Rob, realised there was a gap in the Perth market that they could help fill. The showroom also stocks giftware such as German glassware and Italian handmade olive wood bowls and platters, lighting from France and Amsterdam, and handmade knives from Florence that complement the kitchen fit-outs. “We wanted to make the showroom warm and inviting. It’s all about ambience,” Wanda says. “It’s the hub of the home and it’s really important to get it right.” Wanda says the extensive Scavolini range includes 43 kitchens from which customers can choose from in-store or from the catalogue. She says the first step when working with customers is to help them narrow down what they want in terms of traditional or modern designs and choose finishes such as high gloss, matte lacquer, glass and timber veneers. “You can have a traditional kitchen that has all the functionality of an ultra-modern fit-out,” Wanda says. Designers from the Scavolini showroom work with the clients, visiting their homes and looking at plans to create beautiful and functional kitchens. Wanda says creating 3D images of the designs gives the clients a better idea of what the finished product will look like so that they can feel more confident with their choices. “It takes the guesswork out of it,” she says. “We generally go through between three

and five drawings and keep modifying them until we get it right and everyone is happy.” Scavolini designs the kitchens with their clients and then orders the products from Italy. Wanda says Scavolini works with preferred installers and trades they trust. To complement these designs, she says they also have a range of internal accessories that go into the cabinetry to make the spaces more accessible and organised. Often clients who work with Scavolini on their kitchens will also choose to work with them on other spaces in the home – such as bathrooms, laundry or even the alfresco areas. Wanda says her family is passionate about Scavolini and their products and even travel to Italy once a year to keep up with the latest trends, which is an advantage to the clients. “If you come into the showroom, you are dealing with the owners – it’s a family business,” Wanda says. Stephen Hawking book

I have a naturally ingrained, unquenchable thirst for knowledge. A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking provides for humbling, yet awe-inspiring physics reading as you delve into arguably the greatest mind on the planet. Props I keep mementos from many of the projects I’ve worked on. The giant chrome key is one of the seven used in the kids’ TV show Amazing which ran back in the mid-90s on Channel 7. It was the first show I ever worked on and I filmed 195 episodes.This skipping rope was a prop used in one of my short films called Ronan’s Escape, which went on to win nine international film awards and 12 nominations. Photo One of my clients in Los Angeles had this photo beautifully framed for me as a gift. It’s an intimate and candid behind-thescenes photo from a commercial I directed starring Avatar director James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’ll never forget the energy in the room that day – it was a very cool moment in my early career. Passport The key to living a dynamic, diverse and culturally rich life. This is a brand new passport – the old one fell apart. One hundred and four cities down and many more to go. I keep my sim cards from Europe, Canada and the USA stuck to it. MacBook Pro laptop Without sounding too technologically cliched, this piece of foldable aluminium is my life. It follows me all over the globe in my backpack and is armed with the moviewriting software Final Draft. It’s my tool for creation and the gateway for daily Skype conference calls with my co-writer and clients around the world.

My filmmaking background was nurtured through cinematography, so naturally I’ve always been a very technical and visual director. Directors are strange creatures. We see the world differently and snapping certain moments can provide limitless inspiration for the stories we want to tell. 7 Movie scripts I’ve always printed and read the original scripts from my favourite movies. I probably have over 50 scripts spreading across nearly every genre. They’re not all Academy Awardwinning films, but they’ve all given me inspiration in one way or another. Jurassic Park was the movie that made me want to be a filmmaker. 8 Bottle of sand My family shipped this all the way over to me in Los Angeles, where it now lives on my desk. It contains a mix of white beach sand and shells from here in WA. It reminds me where home is and to never forget where I came from. 9 Surfboard After an exhausting day on set filming, there’s no better way to escape than with a surf during a Californian sunset. The board is a 215cm Equinox made by a talented, long-haired lout in his Manhattan Beach garage. I love it. 10 ID card This bit of plastic is my access to Paramount Pictures in Hollywood. Driving through the front gate is much easier than scaling the studio walls late at night and hiding in the bushes to avoid those security searchlights like we used to. My co-writer and I have the smallest, most basic and bland writing room on the studio lot and we love it.
