Hospital foundations, auxiliaries celebrate community kindness By DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

News – Ian Ross can’t understand why people are so modest when it comes to the Smiths Falls hospital’s colon scopes. “(They are) those fun things that we haven’t had anyone want to put their names on (them) as a donor,â€? said a puzzled Ross, representing the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital’s annual general meeting at the Great War Memorial Hospital site in Perth on Tuesday, June 25. Despite the squeamishness about some people towards the devices, they are just one of the many practical, life-saving tools that the foundation has helped the hospital buy, like cataract surgery equipment. “A healthy hospital is a healthy community, and that requires equipment,â€? said Ross, who told the assembled that he often has to battle the perception that “all of the equipment that is (acquired) doesn’t come through the province, that the hospital just fires off a list to the province,â€? when, in fact, “it actually goes through the foundation.â€? The unemployment problems that still bedevil Smiths Falls continue to have a knock-on effect for fundraising. “One of the challenges that the foundation (has) is finding money,â€? said Ross. “Because of the employment problems we have‌but we have managed to overcome that and continue to have community support.â€? Some of his foundation’s upcoming fundraising events include a motorcycle poker run on Sunday, July 7, a golf tournament on Friday, Aug. 23, and a Rocky Horror Picture Show themed dance on Saturday, Oct. 26. Marion Bell of the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation, said that she was proud of the surgical table and event recorder her group had been able to provide to the hospital, amongst other tools of the trade. Her foundation put in 20,224 volunteer hours, doing everything from portering, needs assisting, taking part in the health lottery, hosting teas and toasts, hosting their inaugural golf tournament, and

the day-to-day running of the hospital gift shop. On their radar screen is getting the final $50,000 needed to purchase a washer/disinfector for the operating room. Coming in the middle of the first round of graduation season, Bell pointed to the six $1,000 scholarships being offered to Perth and District Collegiate Institute students who are set to pursue medical studies. For Jackie Staples of the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Auxiliary, nothing succeeds like success, like the “hand-quilted crib sheets for all babies born in the hospital,â€? which topped 350 babies last year. “Our focus will stay with the maternity floor at this time,â€? said Staples. “We will see what we can get for them off of their wish list.â€? As for the crib sheets, “the thank-you letters we get from new mothers is what keeps us going.â€? Other equipment Staples’ group has been able to procure includes $5,000 for a birthing bed, and another $5,000 for an intravenous pump. With 76 members, Staples stated that “we are still in the growing stages.â€? Amongst her group’s upcoming fundraising events, the one that caught the audience’s attention, and drew the most questions, was the Paper and Duct Tape Fashion Show. While details are to follow, Bill Dobson, Warden of Lanark County and Reeve of Montague Township, was heard to ask, “Will Red Green be there?â€? Jocelyn Gordon of the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation was happy to report that her group donated $838,000 last year for equipment, double last year’s amount, about $390,000 of which went to new X-ray equipment in Perth. “The hospital has truly benefited from the donor base,â€? said Gordon, with about $482,000 in donations last year, up from the previous campaign. “Our donors show great compassion for all in our catchment area.â€? She also noted that the annual Black Tie Bingo event, held at Code’s Mill this past April, “wildly exceeded expectations‌ it has become the signature social event of the season,â€? with all of the event’s tickets being snatched up within three hours.

News – Celebrations of the 200th anniversary of European settlement in Tay Valley Township will be happening throughout 2016 and a new anniversary logo has been created for the occasion. Reeve Keith Kerr, in unveiling the new logo at a recent council meeting, noted that the fiddler was an appropriate symbol of both our early and present community. “The fiddler was the focus of our community gatherings, of barn dances, fairs and socials, Kerr said, “and reflects an important tradition in Tay Valley Township (historically comprised of Bathurst, North Burgess and South Sherbrooke townships). The sense of community has always been strong in the historic Tay Valley townships. Deputy Reeve Susan Freeman says, “The circular shape in the background of the logo depicts this aspect of a circle of community, while the water flowing

through is symbolic of the abundant rivers, lakes and streams that are an integral part of our lives here. Logo designer Annie Dalton lives and works at one of the first settler’s homes on the Upper Scotch Line. She also designed the signs for the hamlets in Tay

Valley Township, incorporating characteristics of each community. Dalton has an extensive portfolio of graphic design on both local and international levels. The logo was recently launched with members of Tay Valley’s 200th Anniversary Working Group and the Perth Historical Society, at the Silver Queen Mine. The Perth Historical Society hosted a tour of the Mine with Tobi Kiesewalter as a very entertaining and informative guide. A cake iced with the logo was made by local cake designer Christa Deacove and enjoyed by the participants. More information about the 200th Anniversary can be obtained on the township’s website at www.tayvalleytwp.ca or by contacting the Noelle Reeve, Planner at 613-267-5353.
