Lisa McLenaghan This amazing Grades 1 and 2 teacher at Maple Grove Public School was honoured with a Director’s Extra Mile Award for her caring and supportive attitude toward a young boy who recently lost his father to a tragic car accident. McLenaghan felt for the student when she learned his only Christmas wish in 2012 was to “have his daddy back. To ease the boy’s pain, she organized a fundraiser which helped his family at Christmas, the first since his father died in September. What was initially anticipated as a small effort, to collect some clothes and a few gifts to put under the tree, snowballed into something much greater. In the two weeks leading up to December 25, supporters collected seven extra-large bags full of toys, eight extra-large bags full of clothing donations, a basket full of groceries from the Your Independent Grocer in Carleton Place, a turkey dinner donated by a butcher in Almonte, $1,200 in gift cards, a voucher to pay for the boy’s mother to take her G1 driver’s test, a gift certificate for a driver’s education course, and enough cash to buy the boy’s mother a used car. The Christmas packages were delivered on Dec. 24 through the assistance of the OPP.
as “Mr. Basketball at the high school. He has coached senior girls basketball – and occasionally other school teams – for 11 years at Char-Lan. For nine of the past 11 years he has led the senior girls team to the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (EOSSAA) Championship at the A level. His teams have been to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Championship for five of those years. The senior girls team won OFSAA silver in 2009 and consolation gold in 2010. During his time at Char-Lan he has also coached junior girls basketball, as well as senior and junior boys basketball, in select years. He runs a Monday night basketball skills clinic at the high school enjoyed by about 20 students from Grades 6 to 12. The owner of Sweet Tooth Bakery in Lancaster also served as a basketball referee for 42 years, and coached competitive basketball with the Cornwall United County Lions for 30 years.

Special recognition William Morris This educational assistant at Rideau District High School (RDHS) was honoured with a Director’s Wall of Excellence Award for his work at the school on behalf of the Society for Educational Visits and Exchanges in Canada (SEVEC). Morris has brought joy to dozens of local students by helping them see their nation as a key exchange organizer at the high school for SEVEC. Morris, a 20-year employee at RDHS, was cited with a 2012 SEVEC Ambassador Award in March of 2013 for helping organize eight SEVEC exchanges
for students at Rideau from 2005-2013. The exchanges allow Rideau students to visit different destinations in Canada to learn about the local culture and history – permitting them to grow and mature.

EMC News – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) recognized excellence May 29 among its staff members and volunteers at the UCDSB Celebration Night. The awards night, held twice yearly in the fall and spring, recognized winners of the Director’s Wall of Excellence Award, Director’s Extra Mile Award, OPC Award of Character, Volunteer of the Year Award and Kermit Award. “We’re here tonight to recognize our staff members and volunteers whose exceptional work is a critical part of helping our board reach our long-term goal of a 90 per cent graduation rate, said board 1st vice chair Jeff McMillan. “We honour teachers who show our students exciting new ways to get and stay fit, who connect Grade 9 students with the high school experience, and who find powerful new ways to energize student learning about current events, he continued. “We are also here to honour exceptional financial managers, and volunteers who make school life that much better for our students.
