EMC News - The excitement is building as organizers put the finishing touches on what promises to be another fantastic edition of the annual Black Tie Bingo. The third annual fundraising gala for the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation, which sold out mere hours after tickets went on sale in January, is slated for April 13 at Code’s Mill. “This year there is a Mardi Gras theme, so in addition to dressing up for a great night out, guests are reminded to wear masks, said Margot Hallam, Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation executive director. “We also have comedian Graham Chittenden on deck to entertain us, which promises to be a great show. Chittenden has performed at the Just For Laughs Festival and has appeared on several episodes of the Comedy Network’s relaunch of Match Game as well as CBC’s The Debaters. He maintains a busy schedule of live, stand-up comedy performances

and has opened for big names in comedy, such as Gerry Dee, Brent Butt and Dave Coulier. He recently travelled across Canada with John Pinette’s “Still Hungry Tour. His own comedy special was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award and still airs on CTV and the Comedy Network. In addition to excellent food and entertainment, gala-goers will be partaking in bingo games featuring great prizes, as well as a fabulous array of auction items up for grabs, including 16 tickets in the 400-level for the Sarah Brightman concert, a woodstove and a Green Egg barbecue. “Black Tie Bingo has proven to be a highly successful fundraiser for the Great War Memorial site (Perth) of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, with more than $80,000 raised over the past two years for specific equipment to benefit care at the Perth site, says Dr. Robert Chaplin, GWM Foundation chair. This year the foundation is raising funds for an Argon Beam Coagulator, which is a pen-like

instrument that helps reduce blood loss during surgery. “We can’t thank the community and all of the sponsors enough for their ongoing and generous support, says Gord Cowie, Black Tie Bingo committee chair. “That is the key to the success of the gala. Our donors and sponsors are definitely making a difference in the community by supporting this event. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails, followed by a live auction, dinner, a comedian and bingo. There are themed prize packages for each game, and the value of those prizes increases as the night goes on. The $100 ticket includes the dinner and five bingo games. Extra game cards can be purchased at the event. For more information or to become a sponsor, please contact Margot Hallam at 613-2640638 or e-mail at mhallam@ gwmfoundation.com. Foodsmiths hosts 12th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser April 13 EMC News - With spring in the air, Foodsmiths is busy putting the final touches on its upcoming 12th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. What is now an annual tradition for residents and visitors to the area, Foodsmiths independently organized annual event in April raises nearly half the funds that flow through Empty Bowls program to area recipients. Founder of the Empty Bowls program, local Potter Jackie Seaton, provides the beautifully handcrafted bowls which are set-up in the store prior to the event and are currently available. Customers can purchase their favourite bowl for $20 and on April 13, fill it with a delicious Edamame Salad, made by Foodsmiths staff, with ingredients donated by their generous suppliers. All proceeds go toward the local sustainable food programs through Empty Bowls. Empty Bowls is also the recipient in the Foodsmiths April BYOB - Charity Bag Donation program. This program was developed by Foodsmiths to encourage the re-use of grocery bags and to pro-

vide a source of funds for charitable organizations in the community. For every bag a customer brings in that saves the use of a new plastic bag, Foodsmiths donates 10 cents to the designated charity that month. This very successful program has supported Empty Bowls and many other local charity organizations for over eight years. With the support of volunteers, staff and Mother Nature, the Foodsmiths 12th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser is poised for another successful event. Staff invites everyone to join them on Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to Build Hope with the Power of Food! The store is located at 106 Wilson St. W. in Perth. Proceeds from all Empty Bowls fundraising by Foodsmiths will go toward the local sustainable food programs administered by The Table Community Food Centre, YAK Youth Centre and Food for Thought Breakfast and Snack programs in Lanark County Schools. Letter of apology from Kiwanis to quilters EMC News - In the March 28 edition of The Perth Courier EMC on page P18, the article “Perth Kiwanis springs into action contained an oversight. It should have stated that the quilt being raffled was hand-stitched by the quilting ladies of St. Paul’s United Church, Perth. The writer of the submission apologizes for this error. Elizabeth Gallant, Ethan Adrain, Jayden Carson, Declan Noonan, Livia Fowler, Darien Heney and I will have the honour of representing St. John at the Rideau St. Lawrence Science Fair at the 1000 Islands Mall in Brockville on April 12. Also last week, the Intermediate boys and girls, in separate groups, were given a half-hour presentation by a representative of the Perth Police Service about Internet safety. On the sports front, boys’ and girls’ badminton tryouts are happening soon. Good luck to all the students who try out for this great spring sport!

Grade 8 science fair highlights EMC News - Last week, the Grade 8 Science Fair projects were presented in the cafeteria. My project was to investigate how a high-density neighbourhood can conserve energy, but that’s just one example of the many unique projects on display. One examined the science of truss bridges, and others asked which type of throw is most effective in football, and whether listening to music while working can make people more productive.
