The girls hoped to chat with Mercer about their numerous fundraising efforts for the initiative, which included a coffee house, stacking wood, class versus class challenges, Brain Fair class challenge, grocery store collections and canvassing door-to-door. The bigger picture of why they were fundraising, other than having Mercer at the school, was never far from the girl’s minds. “Five people fit under one net and with the money that we raised it will save the lives of 2,880 people, which is pretty amazing,” said Stratford-Kurus. “We will be able to help these people thrive with the use of a bed net!” Even if they weren’t the winners they knew they were still going to be making a difference. “Before we knew we won we knew we were going to be saving so many lives,” said Barrass. “Win or lose we were proud to be a part of it,” added Stratford-Kurus. The girls’ parents beamed with pride as they sat waiting the big moment on March 20. “It’s not surprising as they are an enthusiastic group,” said Margot’s dad Ric Denis.
