In the wake of the PBC AGM in May, where committee members voted unanimously to seek clarity from Aveo on what the future held for the recreational centre when the 10 year Peregian Springs News - September 2021

Recreation Facility Agreement expires on 17 February 2022, a working group was formed to investigate the matter.

Under the current agreement, Aveo Group has taken responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the facility .

After a working group meeting on September 3, Aveo responded on September 10 with a letter to the Principal Body Corporate offering to hand over the asset for a nominal fee, based on Aveo Group retaining the ability to sub-lease the commercial spaces for 100 years. Continued, page 4.

Like many people on the Coast, I was not born here. I arrived here in 2006 to edit and manage what was then, The Noosa Journal. I was nine years into my journalism career, had been married for five years to a wonderfully talented lady, and up until that point my longest stint living in one State had been about nine years.

Fast forward to 2021 and we’ve now been living on the Coast for 15 years, our two children were born here and in a few weeks time Rebecca and I will celebrate 20 years of marriage. We love it here and we’re not going anywhere.

During our time here I’ve watched from behind the scenes as the passion project that is Peregian Springs News has grown and evolved from the self-funded, 8-page, newsletter it was in 2015, to the 32 page magazine it is today.

The acceptance of the magazine by readers and advertisers alike is something I am immensely proud of, and somewhat daunted by, as I step in for a few months to give Rebecca a well-earned break from the monthly deadlines of the Editor’s chair.

Peregian Springs News, and its sister publications Coolum News and Eastern Beaches News, are there because Rebecca and I believe every community deserves to see themselves up in lights, to share their stories, and to have someone keeping an eye on local issues. I hope you enjoy this edition and look forward to hearing from you, Geoff

For whatever reason, maybe its the number of children living in the area, or our solid mix of immigrants from the United Kingdom, Halloween is always a day of high activity.

Many families go all out to decorate their homes and participate in the drama of what was originally a Celtic festival to mark the end of their summer, the harvest and the start of winter. It’s held on the night before what was then their New Year, on November 1.

According to www.history.com, Halloween was originally call Samhain with bonfires built and sacrifices made to the Celtic deities in a bid to stave off evil spirits returning to earth

to damage the crops.

In our modern times, that has translated to houses decorated in all things ghoul, and bunches of children and their parents wandering by to visit, bucket in hand seeking treats or tricks.

The action usually starts around 4.30pm and lollies tend to have run out by 7.30pm.

REC CLUB FUTURE CONSIDERED From page 1 In the letter, addressed to the Principal Body Corporate and sighted by Peregian Springs News, section 7 of the Recreational Facility Agreement is discussed.

This section outlines the options for handing over the management of the facility, including the option for Aveo Group to present a suggestion with the Principal Body Corporate then having 60 days to either accept or reject the offer. Based on the letter being September 10, that period expires in November this year.

The offer that has been made is for the recreational facility to become “common property of the PBC at an acquisition value of a nominal sum”.

If the PBC is interested in the offer for Lot 9007, Aveo proposes to draft a transfer deed, with key elements to include: “(a) The PBC will enter into a lease to Aveo

for Aveo to lease (for a nominal rent) the cafe, sales office, admin office, CMS room and meeting room, for a 100 year term (b) Aveo can sub-lease and assign the lease in part of in whole without the PBC’s approval. (c) This lease will include terms allowing Aveo and its sublessees and invitees to access certain areas of the Recreational Facility and the car park. (d) The PBC will be responsible for all maintenance and upkeep on Lot 9007, including the recreational facility and car park. (e) The sub-lease tenant will be responsible for its own consumables such as water, electricity etc.”

In terms of next steps, the PBC team now have the option of accepting the offer in principle, rejecting it, or presenting an alternative proposal for consideration.

COUNT THE BIRDS FOR A GOOD CAUSE BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA IS CALLING ON THE NEXT GENERATION OF BIRD LOVERS AND THEIR PARENTS TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS YEAR’S AUSSIE BACKYARD BIRD COUNT.

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count, from October 18 to 24, aims to engage school communities in the natural world while getting to know the birds in their local area, through participation in a simple, fun, activity that can be done anywhere.

BirdLife Australia’s Sean Dooley said the event encouraged school children to spend 20 minutes in their favourite outdoor space recording the birds they see and reporting on them.

Mr Dooley said the annual count provided an opportunity to gain a more detailed picture of what birds are living where and how our native birds are faring. Last year 4.6million birds were counted in seven days.

The good news for those interested in the project is that there are also more than $5,000 worth of prizes being given away as part of this year’s count. For more information on the Aussie Backyard Bird Count go online to: https://aussiebirdcount.org.au

WANT TO RIDE A DRAGON BOAT? IT’S A DRAGON AND IT’S A BOAT, AND IT SEEMS MORE AND MORE PEREGIAN SPRINGS’ RESIDENTS ARE SIGNING ON TO LEND THEIR PADDLE POWER IN THE NAME OF FUN.

A club spokesman said that over the last couple of months, the Maroochy Sea Serpents Dragon Boat and Outrigger Club (MSS) had enticed new members from the suburb, based mainly on the spruiking power of one team member, Theresa, who talked up the benefits of Dragon Boat paddling to anyone who would listen at the local pool.

“We now have attracted an extra 7 members, the majority seasoned swimmers and tri athletes.

“Amongst those new members are a number of vision impaired swimmers.

“They have been welcomed into our dragon boat fraternity and have become valued members of our team and accomplished paddlers in a short time.

“Due to Covid our regatta season has been effected, however the team was looking forward to participating in the first regatta for the season at the end of September at Kawana.

“Others are scheduled later in the year, Covid willing.”

Dragon Boat racing is a team sport where paddlers work for a shared purpose. Each person has to put in the very best to achieve

the goal and a crew is only a strong as it weakest paddler.

Training, and indeed racing, is all about timing and working together.

“Our members range in age from 12 to mid-70’s. It is a great way to get fit or to maintain fitness.”

MSS paddle from the Maroochy Waterfront Camp and Conference Centre, 42 David Low Way, Maroochydore, on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings from 5pm and Saturday mornings from 7am.

Turn at the Waterfront Hotel, drive through the complex, stop at the tennis courts and you will see a wall of yellow race shirts.

BUSY MONTH FOR PERFORMERS FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO CATCH SOME LOCAL SINGING AND ACTING THE NEXT FEW MONTHS OFFER BOTH IN COOLUM.

First up, on October 10, the annual Sounds of Celebration concert is making a comeback after last year’s COVID cancellation.

Featuring the community choir, Waves of Harmony (pictured) along with a range of special guests and a variety of entertainment suitable for everyone, the event is a fundraiser for St Vincent De Paul Society in Coolum to support its homelessness programs.

The Sounds of Celebration will be held from 2pm to 4.30pm at St Peter’s Church, Elizabeth Street. Tickets are $15 at the door.

Meanwhile, Coolum’s busy bunch of thespians at Coolum Theatre Players are rehearsing this month for their next show The Ladies in Black which is scheduled to hit the

stage in November and December this year.

TRI IGNITES COMMUNITY SPIRIT AFTER A YEAR’S HIATUS DUE TO COVID, THE NOOSA TRIATHLON IS BACK ON FROM 27-31 OCTOBER 2021 BRINGING ENTHUSIASTIC SWIMMERS, CYCLISTS AND RUNNERS TOGETHER TO ENJOY NOOSA’S ICONIC ENDURANCE SPORTING EVENT.

But it is not just triathletes who are attracted to Noosa’s multi-sport fitness challenge, with the local community getting behind the event by volunteering and raising funds for their independent causes.

Noosa Triathlon provides a great fundraising opportunity, supporting local schools, sports clubs, church groups and many community groups.

“We love being part of the Tri” says Sue Griffiths, who along with her group from Noosaville View Club raises funds for The Smith Family’s Learning For Life students.

“Our members enjoy the social element.”

The Noosa Men’s Shed play a huge part, by volunteering on multiple days raising funds for their “Shedders” which also encourages their members to keep active and involved.

It not only helps their physical health but their mental health too.

“We enjoy checking in the athletes before their race,” said Jerome Stuart.

“We use new technology for this role which keeps us stimulated.”

Some groups and indeed some individual volunteers have been involved with the triathlon for over 30 years.

Ron Acutt has volunteered as an individual for over 30 years and is also one of Noosa’s longest serving triathletes, hoping to complete his 36th race this year.

Joy Van Zetten from Noosa Netball Club has earned herself a plaque in Noosa’s Walk of Fame on Noosa Parade as the longest serving Noosa Triathlon volunteer.

The Noosa Lions Park is a spectacular sight on the night before as thousands of bikes 10

are lined up ready for the day ahead, closely guarded by a pack of security dogs until the early hours when athletes arrive in the dark preparing themselves for the race ahead as the sun rises and the beach glistens.

There is a free shuttle bus service to the festival village in Hastings St which runs all week and is the best way for volunteers to get to their location.

Noosa Triathlon is a local event where everyone can take part.

Volunteers receive a unique event T-shirt which also serves as way of receiving discounts at local restaurants.

“We love supporting the volunteers,” said Jarrad Hoffman from Noosa’s Olakino.

“As an experienced athlete I know how valuable and supportive the volunteers are, cheering us on, providing drinks at aid stations and hosing us down at the finish line.”

Volunteering at Noosa Triathlon provides anyone who is keen to be involved, the best seats in the house.

“I love that the athletes thank us” chuckles Audra Kearney from Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast, who is in the running for Australia’s Volunteer of the Year Award.

Raising funds and having fun whilst giving something back makes volunteering at the Noosa Triathlon a great opportunity for locals and local groups.

LOCKDOWN LAUNCHES AUTHOR LOCKED OUT OF SCHOOL BY COVID-19 SHUTDOWNS OCTAVIA BICKFORD TOOK PEN TO PAPER TO SHARE HER EXPERIENCE IN A PICTURE BOOK

Octavia, who was in Grade 2 in 2020 when she wrote and illustrated her 39-page book, The Virus Called COVID-19, dedicated it to “those who lost their lives during COVID-19 and to my Nana and Pa”.

She also thanked her Mum, Debbie, for helping to get her book self-published.

Debbie said Octavia always has pen amd paper in hand she had decided to help her publish the book as “I thought it was a very lovely perspective from a 7-year-old”.

For Octavia, the worst thing about lockdowns had been not being able to see her friends in person - although she said seeing them online had been special.

Asked how she felt about being published, Octavia said she was “very proud” and was “very inspired to publish more books”.

Debbie said Octavia had always enjoyed reading books. “She loves a trip to the library and borrows as many books as she can,” she said.

“Her first day at school when asked what she wanted to learn from school she said she couldn’t wait to learn how to read!”

CHILDCARE CENTRE APPROVED

SUNSHINE COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL HAVE APPROVED, WITH CONDITIONS, AN APPLICATION FOR A CHILD CARE CENTRE AT 2 LONGWOOD DRIVE.

The application, lodged by NorthGroup Consulting, is for a two-storey Habitat Early Learning Centre offering a Montessori program for children from birth to school age.

The decision notice for MCU21/0131 listed on the Council’s Development “i” website shows the plan for the site has approval based on a list of conditions including: • A maximum of 14 staff and 93 children permitted to be cared for on the premises at any one time.

• The approved use must not operate outside the hours of 6.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, and not at all on weekends and public holidays. Staff must not arrive on site prior to 6am.

• Service vehicle movements, including loading and unloading, must not occur outside the hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and not at all on weekends or public holidays.

• All outdoor play areas and balcony areas above ground floor must not be enclosed by permanent fixtures such as shutters, louvres, glass panelling or the like except where required to satisfy the privacy conditions or acoustic amenity conditions of this development approval and/or other than as shown on 14

the Approved Plans.

All airconditioning units or other mechanical equipment must be visually integrated into the design and finish of the building or otherwise fully enclosed or screened such that they are not visible from the street frontages nor adjoining properties.

• The outdoor play areas associated with the use must be a minimum of 1.5m setback from all site boundaries adjoining a residential use.

• The upper level outdoor play area and plant deck located on the northweset building face must include either balustrading or fixed external screens, as shown on the Approved Plans, to obscure direct views into the habitable room windows or prive ope space areas of adjoining residential properties.

The approval notes the developer must undertake to reinstate gutters and kerbing on Longwood Drive and Peregian Springs Drive as part of the realignment of the entrance and exit for the new development.

There is to be a minimum of 27 car parks provided, including a maximum of 14 staff carparks.

When it comes to noise attenuation, the conditions provide a guide to the developers around the acceptable levels of noise permitted by the approval.

Timing of construction is not yet known.

I would have had more luck getting a tree to talk to me that night. Talking to teenagers is a common challenge many of us parents can share. Adolescence can be a perplexing, challenging, confusing and emotional time of life. It is a time where they develop their independence, develop who they are and figure out where they fit in the world.

All of this can make having conversations with them very challenging.

Here are a few tips that may help you have better conversations: Bridge the Gap – Teenagers often feel misunderstood and think that their parents have no idea what it’s like to be a teenager.

Try putting your opinions, feelings and views to the side and help them discover their values and beliefs.

Avoid telling them how you think they should think and feel.

Your teenager probably won’t be looking for you to fix or solve problems.

Instead help them move towards finding a resolution themselves.

Validated your teenager – Can you remember what it was like to be one? If you can, it will help you relate better, understand and see things from their perspective.

If they feel like they have been heard and

validated, then they will be more likely to open up more. Acknowledging their feelings and needs can go a long way to establishing connection with them.

Choose your time – When your teenager is displaying lots of emotion then that is not going to be a productive time to try and have a rational conversation.

Try to avoid bringing up an important conversation when they’re about to walk out the door or are watching their favourite show.

It might be helpful to even set a time that all parties agree on (like an appointment) when important conversations need to be had.

Ask open ended questions – Asking the right questions is an art and takes practice.

Some good questions to ask are: • How did that make you feel?

• What are your thoughts about this?

• What do you think is the best thing to do?

• What can I do to help?

Try to stay away from yes and no answer questions.

Always remember if you struggle, you’re not alone. They will grow out of it and with some work and effort, you can get them to talk.

ROADWORK TO IMPROVE TRAVEL ROAD UPGRADES

Do you travel along Verrierdale Road, Verrierdale, at any stage during your day?

Please be aware that reconstruction of a 900m section of the road has begun and will take around eight weeks, weather permitting.

It’s quite a significant amount of work as Council will be completely removing and replacing the road base and so will need to close the road with redirections in place.

The existing road and base will be removed one lane at a time.

The subgrade will then be strengthened by lime stabilisation with the placement of a cement fortified gravel to follow.

Once this lane has been completed to a bitumen seal standard, works will start on the opposite lane.

The project team is keen to complete these works in a timely manner and do their best to work with the community during construction.

I understand that there will be some inconvenience for residents and businesses, but this upgrade really needs to be done and I thank you for your patience.

If you’re able to, I’d recommend using

Eumundi-Noosa Road and Emu Mountain Road while the work takes place.

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

ASSISTED DYING LAWS PASSED VAD LEGISLATION PASSES PARLIAMENT

Earlier this month, legislation to legalise voluntary assisted dying was passed in State Parliament.

While I respect the outcome and recognise the community’s support for the concept of VAD, I don’t believe the legislation in its current form gives people a legitimate choice.

Knowing that the Government had the numbers to pass the legislation, I took the opportunity to advocate for more palliative care funding, which was the biggest concern raised by my electorate, as well as for greater protections against coercion and conscientious objections, which were amendments flagged by the Premier, but dismissed by Cabinet.

As I articulated in my speech, I was not voting against VAD, but I believe the legislation could have been strengthened.

One of our key roles as parliamentarians is ensuring the legislation we pass is the best it can be, and while I’m not disappointed in the outcome, I don’t believe the legislation and the current lack of palliative care services across my electorate and the state offers people a real choice.

In the past month I’ve spoken a number of times in Parliament about the need for not only more targeted financial support for businesses, but also more compassion and a common sense approach to border restrictions and exemptions for returning residents. Decisions need to be based on health advice, and Queenslanders deserve to know what that health advice is.

One thing we do know for certain is that vaccinations are our ticket to restoring our freedoms, so if you haven’t already done so, I encourage you and your family to get vaccinated as soon as you can. GOLF TIP - WITH PEREGIAN GOLF PRO KATELYN MUST HOW TO MAKE BETTER CONTACT WITH YOUR PITCH SHOTS AND IMPROVE YOUR DISTANCE CONTROL:

Pitching is about controlling the length of swing and speed of the club, to help return the club face angle to how you want it each time you hit the ball.

For example if you want to hit a normal high flight PW towards the hole, the angle you start with on the club, you want to do your best to have it in motion and if you were to take a snap shot of the club hitting the ball you would want it to look similar.

To do this you want to start with your feet to be inside the width of your shoulders.

When it comes to controlling your swing length imagine a clock face and hitting a certain number on the face depending on how far you want to hit your shot.

On the follow through hit the opposite number, so a 10 o’clock swing would follow through to a 2 o’clock swing.

The final step to help you even out your swing is to ensure both hands have even pressure through them for the entire swing. This will allow you to turn your chest more freely, nail those clock face numbers and ultimately hit controlled pitch shots.
