It was unanimously agreed that before 26 May, the PBC engage with the Developer to clarify whether the Recreational Facility Access Agreement will be renewed or whether the Rec Club will be sold to the PBC as an asset. The vote to seek clarity comes after several years of debate around the Rec Club and how much its management and running costs would cost each Body Corporate fee paying resident in Ridges to maintain into the future.

FROM THE ED’S DESK WHY HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL MEN’S HEALTH WEEK? THEY’RE ALRIGHT AREN’T THEY?

Well things appear to have certainly improved since 2002 when Men’s Health International Awareness Week started in the US, but in Australia men are still likely to live around 4.1 years less than women, are less likely to access Medicare services, more likely to report lower levels of life satisfaction and more likely to die by suicide*.

Men’s Health Week began in 1994 when the US Congress wanted to heighten awareness of preventable illness while encouraging early detection and disease treatment among men and boys. In Australia, Men’s Health Week events began from about year 2000 onwards and impetus grew further in 2002 in Vienna

when the 2nd World Congress Of Men’s Health brought together six men’s health organisations to run international events in June each year.

So, this International Men’s Health Week, maybe we can use the moment to specifically encourage the special men and boys in our lives to “MENGAGE” and try something new to improve their physical and mental health.

However, we know that any activity for anyone that improves social connectedness and physical health are great whatever your age, stage or gender. So, we’ve featured a few ideas this month for everyone to try, including Coolum Walking Football (p14), drumming and much more more with Coolum HeARTs (p30), and digging in and lending a hand for Coolum and North Shore Coast Care (p10).

LOCAL NEWS - RIDGES REC CLUB DECISION PENDING

FROM PAGE 1 In a copy of the AGM Minutes, sighted by Your Community Media, the motion, put to the Committee by Ordinary Resolution and agreed 8 votes to 0 was: “RESOLVED THAT within 28 days after the publication of the minutes of the AGM, the Body Corporate must engage with FKP Residential Developments Pty Ltd to renew the Recreational Facility Access Agreement or agree the acquisition of the Recreation Club asset for the Body Corporate and that these matters must be concluded on or before 30 September 2021.”

We’ll follow the outcome of the decision, whether its renewal of the Recreational Facility agreement or whether the PBC will acquire the Recreation Facility and how much that will be for and how much, if anything, will the Ridges homeowners have to pay by way of levies or otherwise, for the acquisition. COMMUNITY CENTRE NOT CLEAR WHILE PEREGIAN SPRINGS AND PEREGIAN BREEZE’S COMBINED POPULATIONS WOULD SUGGEST ELIGIBILITY FOR A COMMUNITY CENTRE TO SERVICE RESIDENTS’ NEEDS - WHETHER IT WILL HAPPEN REMAINS UNCLEAR. In original plans for the Estate, land next to the roundabout at the southern exit of Peregian Springs State School, pictured right, has been earmarked for a future community building.

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said Council is progressing planning of its social infrastructure network across the region in accordance with the Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Strategy and Sunshine Coast Community Strategy.

“The Desired Standards of Service (DSS) for local community venues states that residents generally should have access to a local community venue within 3km and that such venues should be designed to cater for populations of 5000-15,000 people,” the spokesperson said.

“The population of Peregian Springs was approximately 7000 people at the 2016 Census, compared with an estimated ultimate forecast population of 9000 people.

“Council generally does not fund the building of local community facilities

such as this, choosing to find interested and motivated parties through an EOI or community tender process.

“Council is reviewing the need and desire for a community centre in Peregian Springs.

“Council has a wide range of social infrastructure requests across the region and will continue to work collaboratively with potential partners and all levels of government to fund these important projects.”

Asked about the potential for any future indoor sport and recreational facility for the region the spokesperson said Council understood the need to provide extra indoor court capacity across the region and will be “undertaking significant planning in this respect in the coming years”.

CARING FOR OUR COAST’S DUNES

By Rebecca Crockett “YOU CAN’T MISS US,” EDWIN, ONE OF THE COOLUM AND NORTH SHORE COAST CARE, DUNE & BUSH REVEGETATION AND WEEDING GROUP CO-ORDINATORS TOLD ME ON THE PHONE THE DAY BEFORE MY VISIT TO THE YINNEBURRA DUNAL PATCH AT YAROOMBA.

I walked to the beach entry number he gave me and saw their sign, I couldn’t see anyone, but I heard lively chatter in amongst the trees.

I hopped the path barrier (something you shouldn’t normally do) and crouched down on a seemingly well-worn spot. Then I saw a couple of the crew in the maze of branches pulling out lengths of vine and weeds and stuffing it all satisfyingly into a white sack.

Happy to chat with me as they went, they explained the weed they were focusing on was of little value to wildlife like birds and bees and it quickly smothered the native vegetation if you let it go.

I’d arrived mid-morning (the crew had been on the go since 8.30am) and when the morning tea whistle blew, I was surprised to see at least half a dozen other people pop up from close-by in their vibrant blue CaNSCC volunteer shirts.

Edwin, my CaNSCC contact came down from up the top of the dune and gave me a warm welcome and enthusiastically showed me the different types of weeds he’d gathered that morning, and telling me about weed in general - how there were 20 different types of weed ranging from declared to environmental weed and how easily the weeds were spread, impressing the importance of the consistent work of volunteers of the CaNSCC. Taking a break with BYO snacks and flasks of tea and coffee in a shady spot near the beach, the volunteers told me about how once you know the weeds getting rid of them becomes 10

a bit of an obsession. They said they get a lot out of being part of the group - from the satisfaction of seeing a patch they’ve cleared ‘take off by itself’ to being satisfied an area’s been freed up for wildlife, to the social and outdoors aspect of it.

“It means new contacts and new friends,” Edwin said, “the mental health of members is so important.”

CaNSCC has dune care and regeneration groups in locations from Twin Waters up to Stumers Creek see https://coolumcoastcare. org.au/what-we-do/weeding-groups-2020/ CaNSCC is not only active in “Hands- on Projects” for Biodiversity such as Dune and Bush regeneration and collecting seeds for the Coolum Native Nursery on Warran Rd, it also plays a big part in Community Education and Awareness using guided walks, talks, seminars and workshops with student, community and corporate groups to increase cultural and historical awareness of our area.

Research and shore monitoring is also a big part of the work CaNSCC does, from assistance with stranded turtles and marine animals to beach and bush data collection.

WALKING FOOTBALL’S HEALTHY GOALS

GAME ON: The Walking Football Coolum crew are keen to find new members to join in the fun on Monday nights at the fields behind the Baptist Church.

BY REBECCA CROCKETT THEY WON’T WIN THE FA CUP FOR FOOTBALL FINESSE, BUT ONE LOCAL GROUP IS KICKING GOALS IMPROVING PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH FOR OLDER PEOPLE.

Walking Football Coolum (WFC) team Founder, Dom Massoni, started the group around two years ago when his wife saw the sport on TV and thought he should give it a go.

There wasn’t one close-by so once he found a ground (thanks to the help of Coolum Baptist Church for the use of the soccer pitch behind the Church) he started a team in Coolum.

As a sport, Walking Football is said to be the fastest growing in the world.

It is a phenomenon that started in Scotland around 10 years ago bringing people, with willing minds and perhaps less willing bodies, together to participate in a game they might’ve played or watched when they were younger - combating social isolation and improving mental and physical health and 14

personal relationships in the process.

Dom, who originally hails from France, says the Coolum walking footballers are a fun crew and a great mix of people from a wide range of local, interstate and international backgrounds including from Scotland, The Netherlands, England and New Zealand.

The footballers are aged from 45 up to their 70s.

Dom said some have played Football (soccer) before when they were younger and others had never played before.

He said it’s easy to pick up the sport, no matter what your level of movement or experience is.

“There’s no physical contact and no tackling,” Dom said.

“It’s 6 players on each side and the ball stays below shoulder height... it’s about ball control and just getting to the ball as quickly as you can (walking) ... we’re not out there to smash each other!”

One of the more senior members of the WFC, Martin who is in his 70’s, says walking football is “really, really good..keeps me fit and keeps the mind sharp”.

Coolum HeARTs is one group that continues to work hard in our community providing loads of opportunities for affordable access to the arts, music and lifestyle activities - especially to those living with significant challenges.

The group has a long history of serving the area which began over 8 years ago, when Barbara and Clive Holden (Co-Founders) had a dream to start a group to help disadvantaged people and then with local encouragement and financial help “Art with Heart” began in their Coolum home.

The group started to grow and had to rent the Potters Den, raising their own funds to become, as it is known as today,

Coolum HeARTs Inc, by asking for a gold coin donation towards the rental of the shed.

They now have 250 people per week attending their activities.

Coolum HeARTS says Term 3 Activities are currently being planned and will be posted on its website for registration mid-June.

A 5-week Women’s Resilience group and a 5-week Ukulele for Beginners workshop are already confirmed for Term 3.

Registration is required for some classes but Vivien said anyone’s welcome “to pop in during any of our activities to see what wonderful work is being carried out (for) the enjoyment of all participants or even just stop by for a chat and a coffee. (Covid protocol must be adhered to).”

“We are always looking for community minded people to join our wonderful organisation as volunteers; either in any of our activities or onto our Management committee,” Vivien said.

Membership is open to all and costs $35 per year. Classes are $5 per session for members and $10 per session for non-members and some activities are just a gold coin donation.

I urge you to have your say on the Mass Transit Project before consultation closes on 22 June, 2021.

Public transport is an issue that’s been raised by Division 9 residents.

You may think, it’s not in our area so why should I care?

Even though the plan is for south of the river, it will affect you – in fact one of the options does mention a bus service through Division 9.

Here are some of my thoughts.

Do you work or travel to the hospital, the University, Maroochydore, Kawana or Caloundra? How do you plan on getting there in the future when the population has grown and traffic is worse?

The options propose a high frequency bus network which will cut through Coolum and Peregian and a feeder bus network which will cut through Bli Bli. How are you going to catch these buses if you want to?

Will you walk or will you drive to a bus stop and if so, where will you park?

Will you continue to drive? Why?

Will you have parking options when you get there?

How will you travel in the future?

Please think about this and tell council what you need and want.

For the corridor – if you’re not on public transport, you’ll be driving next to it.

What do you like or dislike about each option presented?

What are your thoughts on the change to surrounding houses and units such as density and height?

Do you have any environmental pros or cons regarding the options?

CALL FOR CLARITY ON NEW LEVY UPDATE ON THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT LEVY (EML)

In the last sitting week of Parliament, I asked the Minister for Emergency Services, Mark Ryan, to support a review into the massive increase in the fire levy that has been slapped on homeowners and businesses in Coolum and Peregian Springs.

I had written to the Minister the previous month to bring this serious issue to his attention, and failing to receive a satisfactory response, I’ve flagged the issue again.

As we navigate our way through a post-COVID economic recovery, the last thing businesses and residents need is another tax grab.

This is not the time to target businesses that are driving the economic recovery and providing much needed jobs for locals, nor is it the time to target homeowners, when housing affordability and homelessness is at crisis point.

VOLUNTARY ASSISTED DYING LEGISLATION

As many readers would be aware by now, the State Government has now tabled legislation to establish Voluntary Assisted Dying.

This is a matter beyond politics – it is deeply personal and divisive, and I have always said I would seek the views of my community before making a decision.

With that in mind, in coming weeks, I will be

sending a survey to all residents aged 60 and over to ask for their views on this legislation.

The Queensland Law Reform Commission has recommended that to access voluntary assisted dying, a person must: • Have an eligible condition that is advanced and progressive and expected to cause death within 12 months • Have a capacity to make a decision around end-of-life choices • Be acting voluntarily and without coercion • Be at least 18 years of age and • Satisfy residency requirements including being an Australian citizen or permanent resident and have been a resident of Queensland for at least a year.

I encourage anyone in the community who wants to share their views to also complete the survey, which will be available on my website soon. Alternatively, hard copies will be available in my office from mid-June.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS: MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

FUNDING BRINGS MUSIC TO EARS RIGHT NOTE

Local residents will soon be surrounded by music with half a million dollars of Federal funding that I was able to secure for two local events.

Firstly, the ‘Offbeat’ music festival in Eumundi will receive $425,000 for a festival that will feature around 100 acts performing at a number of venues.

Secondly, there’s also almost $100,000 for Coolum promoter Red Chair and the COMPASS Project, involving seven acts performing 35 concerts over the next 12 months.

The local music scene was hit hard by the pandemic, with everyone from promoters to roadies doing it tough.

But, now that live music is back, we’re in for a treat. What’s more it’ll attract tourists to the Sunshine Coast to enjoy these spectacles, and they will all need to eat, drink and sleep, which means they’ll be spending their money in local bars, restaurants and motels, which is great for jobs, great for local businesses and great for local artists.

CHAIRS ADD A TOUCH OF DRAMA DECEIT, DRAMA, SHOCKING REVELATIONS AND HILARIOUS COMEDY - HOW MUCH CAN HAPPEN ON TWO DECKCHAIRS ON AN ENGLISH SEASIDE?

Turns out quite a lot! Audiences are in for a rollercoaster ride when Coolum Theatre Players brings to town it’s upcoming production of “Deckchairs 1” , a show of 5 “playlets” written by Jean McConnell that are by turns funny, poignant and surprising.

Each short play is set on the same two deckchairs but with two different characters in the chairs each time, creating a sense in the audience that they’re in the taboo space of the eavesdropper on the various duos’ personal conversations.

Director, Barbara Ryan, (pictured right, standing) says the touch of drama in the program is something audiences at CTP may not be used to but is still wonderfully balanced with comedy and a hint of live music.

Giving a few details of the plays, Barbara said: “Shoppers” is a riotous conversation between two well-to-do shopaholics who let out a rather surprising secret, “Early Blight” is a heart-breaking exploration of a doomed mother/daughter relationship, “Dancers” wittily dissects the tea-dancing world of two skittish women, “Late Frost” is a drama in which a life-long friendship faces it’s biggest challenge and “Doggies” is a hilarious tale about two very different types of dog-owners.”

With a cast of many locals, Deckchairs 1 is Community Theatre at it’s best with the troupe, as always, putting in their “all” in terms of preparation (on-stage and backstage) and performance.

Cast member and part of the “Shoppers” duo Janet Marshall (pictured above right seated) said she loves being on stage but despite meticulous preparation actors still get nervous and if you don’t, then “you haven’t 28

done it properly.” Julia Loaney, (pictured above left seated) who also plays in the “Shoppers” duo, says she ‘loves being on stage’ and ‘feeds off the laughter’ and ‘loves the interaction’.

Coolum Theatre Players welcomes interest from theatre-loving new members including backstage , lighting and front of house greeters. They’re currently particularly looking for a new member who’d enjoy volunteering to help with front of house .

“Deckchairs 1” is recommended for 18 years and over but children 15 years plus can be accompanied by a parent or care-giver.

VENTURE INTO SOUTH DAKOTA

By Lenette Paul SOUTH DAKOTA, KNOWN FOR ITS FRIENDLY PEOPLE, WILDLIFE AND SCENIC LANDSCAPES IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE LAND OF GREAT FACES AND GREAT PLACES.

In the state of South Dakota the bustling town of Keystone (where Hitchcock’s Northby-Northwest was filmed) is the gateway to awe-inspiring attractions.

One of America’s most cherished symbols of freedom and tourist destinations, attracting 3+ million visitors a year, is the Mount Rushmore National Monument (pictured), a colossal granite carving in the Black Hills of four Presidents’ faces: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt, representing, birth, growth, development and preservation.

The creator was sculptor Gutzon Borglum who oversaw the project from 1927 to 1941 with son Lincoln’s help.

Rushmore is a monumental 5725 feet high and each face is 60 feet.

Not without controversy, however, the land was originally included in the Great Sioux Reservation and repealed by the US government when gold was discovered. For the Sioux, Rushmore epitomises the loss of sacred lands. Terrible battles were fought

nearby at Wounded Knee and Little Big Horn representing last armed efforts at preserving Native Americans’ way of life.

The Custer National Cemetery and Museum (Custer’s Last Stand) is a moving memorial to the dead from both sides.

Also nearby is the never-ending carving of Chief Crazy Horse where the rich history and traditions of Native Americans can be studied.

Walk in the footstep of Wild West characters in historic Deadwood and in summer watch a street shootout with three gunfighters against one (the lone shooter wins!) or participate in the saloon re-enactment of the card game where gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok was murdered while holding the Dead Man’s Hand – two black eights and two black aces. Tremendous fun. Badlands National Park is nearby with unique eroded buttes and pinnacles and one of the world’s richest fossil deposits. South Dakota – fun for adults and children alike.

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

DEALING WITH THE SETBACKS One of my favourite recreation activities is playing AFL. My body has been feeling the best it’s been since having my right ACL (knee) repaired five years ago. This has caused me to be braver in taking the game on.

Well, that was until last weekend. I was making a run for goal with the ball when an opposition player hit my good knee and it buckled, sending me to ground. Now I await the dreaded results of the MRI. To say it will be a setback to my illustrious AFL career would be an understatement.

We all face setbacks at some point in our life (financial, health, relationship). How we deal and/or respond can be the determining factor of how we move forward.

GIVE YOURSELF TIME.

We need to allow time to acknowledge and deal with the disappointment that comes from the setback. Sometimes it can be painful especially when goals and expectations have to be re-calibrated. It’s ok to feel loss and grief for a time as long as you don’t get stuck and leave it too long until you move forward.

The encouragement of significant others can be a true source of strength.

BE MINDFUL OF YOUR SELF-TALK AND ADOPT A CAN-DO ATTITUDE.

Our thinking plays a large role in what happens next. Embrace setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. The process

of working through the setback can develop a deeper and more meaningful sense of self and purpose.

FIND A PATH TO PROGRESS AND MOVE FORWARD.

Reflect on the setback and ask yourself the ‘Now What’ questions.

Now what do I need to change?

Now what do I need to do differently?

Now what do I need to move on from?

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL AND NOT ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARE OUT OF YOUR CONTROL.

Sometimes the very circumstances we can’t control can cause us to change direction which in turn can lead us to find success in areas we didn’t expect.

We can always control our attitude and outlook.

Someone once told me that the experiences we value most in life are often the ones that are the most challenging. They push us to grow, develop and learn.

So remember, a setback is a setup for a comeback!!
