ALL ABOARD FOR 2022 IF THERE’S TO BE A DEFINITIVE YEAR IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR PART OF THE WORLD, THEN 2022 COULD WELL BE IT.

Public comment closed on the proposal for a Tavern and 50 units on Lot 3291 at 6 Koel Circuit on December 13. The proposed tavern site falls in the Village Centre Zone of the Coolum Ridges Masterplan which describes it as a “gateway site” to Peregian Springs. Residents will be keen to see how this develops over the next 12 months.

With resident owners now dominating the Ridges Peregian Springs Principal Body Corporate Committee, their first big decision will be what to do with the Recreational Facility which Aveo Group are keen to hand over to the PBC, in exchange for long term leases on the commercial spaces in the building and Pavilions residents will be keeping a close eye on the hill top development which will see the last large parcel of land in Peregian Springs built out.

What comes of the public consultation around a potential community centre near the Rec Club is another project to watch.

FROM THE ED’S DESK As this edition of Peregian Springs News hits the streets, our 75th publication since launching way back in 2015, the first days of 2022 will have passed and we’ll all be starting to plan for the year ahead.

For some though, there’ll be a bit of holiday time left in January. To help those readers, we’ve pulled together an events guide which starts on page 8 and has a look at what’s on for adults and children this month.

On the serious side, we take a look at the situation some families have found themselves in on the Sunshine Coast where high rents and high house prices have effectively pushed them out of their homes and left them without anywhere to stay. That story, from page 4, features comments from

our local representatives, and some alarming statistics, including one quote that stuck with me from the Rental Affordability Index, which says rents now on the Sunshine Coast are basically unaffordable for families earning less than $80,000 a year.

The good news is there is awareness around the issue and steps are being taken to try and ease the problems. Sadly, that will be too late for those stuck seeking the help of friends, family and charities right now. As good neighbours, we can do our best to look out for others in need and help where we can.

We have plenty of great stories to share this month, and have also had strong support from our local businesses keen to put their products and services in front of you for consideration of your 2022 projects. It’s well worth checking out the advertising for tips and ideas to get you started. Geoff

FAMILY BRINGING PIZZA BACK ITALIAN FOOD WILL MAKE A RETURN TO PEREGIAN SPRINGS SHOPPING CENTRE IN JANUARY WITH THE SOFT OPENING OF PRESTO PASTA & PIZZA NEXT TO KINDRED HAIR.

The new restaurant will see the centre fully tenanted for the start of 2022, and follows the opening of Nomadi homewares next to BWS in December.

For Presto Pasta & Pizza’s owners Michael and Jodie Startari the Peregian Springs’ venture will be their second on the Sunshine Coast, adding to the store they opened at Mt Coolum in 2019 after moving up from a small country town on the Murray River in Victoria.

“The community of Mt Coolum and surrounds have embraced the Victorian way of pizza, we have grown from the original three staff employed by us along with us as husband and wife team, pizza maker and

pasta cook, to now being able to employee 12 locals from the community,” Michael said. “We embraced the opportunity to branch out to Peregian Springs when it became clear we had customers travelling A big welcome to down to Mount Coolum to Massimo, Michael, Jodie and Cruz. support us.

“We will have a soft opening in January 2022, with all our pizzas available along with sides, entree and our pasta and risottos becoming available in February.”

The restaurant will offer dine-in, takeaway and delivery and will be open from Tuesday to Sunday. They are on the look out for staff, and happy to accept resumes or visits in store, or contact via social media.

RENT HIKES PUSH FAMILIES OUT RISING RENTS AND RECORD HOUSE PRICES ARE DRIVING AN ACCOMMODATION CRISIS ACROSS THE SUNSHINE COAST WITH FAMILIES BEING PRICED OUT OF THE MARKET.

The recently released Rental Affordability Index, part of report compiled by National Shelter, SGS Economics & Planning, the Brotherhood of St Laurence and Beyond Bank Australia, shows rents on the Sunshine Coast are becoming unaffordable for anyone earning less than $80,000 a year.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s latest homelessness statistics released on December 7, show the 1600 services that report in to the Institute nationally assisted 278,300 clients from June 2020 to June 2021.

living in cars or on friend’s couches or moving away from the Coast to find somewhere affordable to live, have become one of the most regular topics of conversations of late and an almost daily feature of local social media groups.

For State Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie stories of families in crisis come all to regularly.

“Our region, like many other parts of the state and the country, is in the grip of a housing affordability and homelessness crisis,” Mr Purdie said.

“There’s rarely a week that goes by that I am not talking to locals at risk of homelessness, forced out of their homes through no fault of their own or unable to get into the property market.

“The stories are heartbreaking, and it’s

clear that all levels of government need to do more.”

Mr Purdie said there were 3,000 social houses on the Sunshine Coast, and in July, the REIQ had reported 0.6% of private rentals were vacant. Meanwhile there are close to 1,800 local families waiting for public housing.

“We know that the Sunshine Coast is one of the most expensive property markets, with a median house price of $825,000,” he said.

“Combined with the impact of COVID, which has placed an enormous strain on housing availability and affordability, the threat of homelessness has never been greater.

“We also know that social housing expenditure per head in Queensland was $132 in 2019/20, down from $135 in 2018/19. This is the second lowest spend rate across the country.

“This lack of investment is compounded by poor planning and foresight on the state

government’s behalf when it comes to the approval of new dwellings in Queensland.

Residential building approvals have dropped by close to 40% since 2014/15.

“Much more investment in social housing is needed if we are serious about finding solutions to this complex issue.

“Right here in our own backyard, Coolumbased company Aussie Tiny Homes is filling an urgent gap in the market, and has partnered with Noosa Council to provide affordable housing.

“They predict they will build over 200 tiny mobile homes next year, which can be used for emergency accommodation or granny flats.

“And while there’s not one easy solution, all three levels of government have a shared responsibility to work more collaboratively to address it.

LOCAL NEWS - HOUSING IN CRISIS CONTINUED...

Continued from page 5 “At the moment, we are seeing charities doing the heavy lifting, but this isn’t sustainable in the long term.”

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said while Council’s planning scheme had provided for a wide range of housing and development types to accommodate projected growth to 2031, it was only part of the equation.

“Bringing housing to market requires the development industry to obtain approvals and physically develop the land,” the spokesperson said.

“Council is working with land developers to improve the plan sealing process and deliver residential land to the market to take advantage of various incentive packages that have been available to homebuyers.

“The Queensland Government is the lead agency responsible for reducing homelessness in Queensland and provides public housing and funding to housing and homelessness services.

The spokesperson said that the Council had taken a range of steps to ease the challenges of homelessness, including: • Partnered to deliver the COVID-19 Housing Crisis Response in partnership with the State Government and IFYS Ltd, including establishing a Homelessness Hub at the Sunshine Coast Stadium.

• Participated in the local Place-Based Response Team and Care Coordination Groups to report on and coordinate support for people rough-sleeping and experiencing homelessness.

• Facilitated the Mayoral Roundtable on Homelessness to identify priority actions to support the Sunshine Coast housing and homelessness sector.

• Published the Housing and Homelessness Directory to improve access to information and referrals to community services.

• Advocated to other levels of government to prioritise action on homelessness, social 6

and housing affordability initiatives.

• Worked collaboratively with the State Government, IFYS Ltd and the University of the Sunshine Coast to undertake a research project which involves an evaluation of the Sunshine Coast COVID-19 Housing Crisis Response and examination of homelessness on the Coast.

• Provided grants to support community organisations to deliver projects that support our vulnerable community members.”

The State Government announced in June this year that it was investing $1.9 billion over four years and creating a $1 billion Housing Investment Fund to boost housing supply across Queensland.

Minister for Housing Leeanne Enoch said the Queensland Housing Strategy Action Plan 2021-2025 would “fast-track projects and initiatives that will increase the supply of social housing, seek proposals to develop underutilised state land, and deliver mixedused developments.

“The Government is increasing the supply of social and affordable housing by almost 10,000 over the life of our Housing Strategy, including 7,400 new builds over the next four years under the Queensland Housing Investment Growth Initiative (QHIGI).”

Fans of the beloved TV series Mother & Son will well recognise the names of the lead characters in Geoffrey Atherden’s long running show about the life and times of a cantankerous old lady and her gruff son trying to co-exist in a modern world.

Atherden penned the first episodes of ‘Mother & Son’ in 1984 creating an instant classic. Many years later he has done it again!

Julie McGregor (Betty in ‘Hey Dad’) and Christopher Truswell (Nudge in ‘Hey Dad’) will take on the roles made famous by Ruth Cracknell and Garry McDonald in this nostalgic trip down “loss-of-memory lane”.

‘Mother & Son’ reinvigorates a treasured Australian comedy icon with Atherden’s distinctive brand of acerbic wit, mixing together the sweet, the sharp, the savage and the sad in Maggie and Arthur’s complex, dysfunctional relationship.

This freshened version of the beloved Logie 16

Award-winning show finds long-suffering second son Arthur Beare hoping for the chance to finally take his new flame Anita (Kate Cullen) away on a little holiday.

His only chance for a break however involves recruiting help from his successful but selfish brother Robert (John Rush) – but the firstborn favourite has enough on his hands.

The philandering dentist has been doing distinctly unhygienic things with his hygienist – and when his wife Liz (Alli Pope) finds out, Arthur’s troubles double as Robert lands on the doorstep.

It doesn’t help that manipulative Maggie is in fine form and sabotaging Arthur’s chances of romance at every turn.

TOP TIPS FOR SUN SMART SKIN WITH SUMMER HERE AND HOLIDAYS FOR SOME, IT’S TIMELY TO HAVE A THINK ABOUT HOW WE LOOK AFTER OURSELVES WHEN THE SUN’S RAYS ARE AT THEIR MOST POTENT.

Just Skin Treatment Clinic Chief Operating Officer Joanna Noller said while summer was a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the beach, a BBQ, backyard cricket or anything else that “makes you smile” it could also be brutal on the skin.

“We treat people with non-melanoma skin cancers across our three clinics, so we see firsthand the impact sun exposure has on people every day,” Joanna said.

In the interest of helping people protect themselves, Joanna shared these tips on how to look after your skin this summer.

1. Apply sunscreen as part of your normal morning routine: Creating this habit will greatly assist with those everyday moments where we find ourselves in the sun for shorter periods of time.

2. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you leave the house. Sunscreen needs time to absorb into your skin and start protecting you properly, so make sure you apply SPF 30+ or more 20 minutes before getting in the sun.

should be applied to each arm, each of your legs, the front of your body, your back and your face (including your neck and ears).

Reapply your sunscreen. If you’re spending extended time in the sun, reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

Ideally, sit in the shade where possible.

An umbrella or shade tent at the beach is ideal, and try covering up with a long sleeved, breathable shirt.

Don’t forget about your eyes. Wearing a wide brimmed hat not only reduces the impact of UV rays on your face and neck, it can minimise the amount of UV rays reaching your eyes by 50%. Add a pair of sunglasses and you can prevent 98% of the sun’s rays from impacting your eyes (look for sunglasses with a 9 or 10 Eye Protection Factor).

Get to know your skin and check it regularly. While this won’t prevent skin cancer, getting a professional skin check at least once every year helps with early detection and if treated early, most skin cancers result in a positive outcome. peregianspringsnews.com.au

MONEY TO SUPPORT NEW STAFF NEW RESEARCH BY JOBACCESS HAS SHOWN THAT BUSINESS OWNERS MAY BE OVERLOOKING A CONSIDERABLE WORKFORCE OF TALENTED PEOPLE LIVING WITH A DISABILITY.

JobAccess, the national hub for disability employment information, found that 70% of Australians have not heard of workplace adjustments which are one of the most effective ways to enable people with disability to gain and retain employment.

JobAccess General Manager Daniel ValienteRiedl said “working from home” was a recent workplace adjustment that had garnered a lot of attention, however there were other things that could be altered to make it easier for those with disabilities.

Workplace adjustments are described as administrative, environmental or procedural changes made to enable people with disability to access employment opportunities and work efficiently and comfortably.

“They are a powerful asset when building truly inclusive and accessible workplaces,” Mr Valiente-Riedl said.

Importantly, the survey found that awareness of workplace adjustments is not only low among the general population, but

also among people with disability.

“When a person with disability requires adjustments, they might not even know that they could ask for them or that support to arrange them is available,” Mr Valiente-Riedl said.

“That could mean they miss out on an opportunity and an employer misses out on a productive, skilled employee because of this lack of knowledge.

“The assumption often is that workplace adjustments are difficult and expensive to implement. But there is support through JobAccess and the Australian Government’s Employment Assistance Fund (www.jobaccess. gov.au/employment-assistance-fund-eaf) “Our internal research shows that half of modifications cost less than $1,000, and that many adjustments can be made at no cost at all, like providing flexible work hours or locations.”

The EAF can provide funding to eligible people with disability for physical modifications to a workplace, assistive technologies, Auslan interpreting, awareness training, and specialist support services.

NEW YEAR’S ULTRA-TRAIL TEST

BY FIONA EWINGTON AS WE SAY GOODBYE TO ANOTHER FESTIVE HOLIDAY, NEW YEAR PROMISES ALL KINDS OF SELF-MADE RESOLUTIONS AND FOR SOME, THIS MEANS TAKING MORE TIME FOR OURSELVES AND BECOMING MORE ACTIVE.

But as the routine starts up again, even with our best intentions, it is easy to fall back into our old ways unless there is a goal.

With a new local event showcasing some of Noosa’s undiscovered hinterland, The Noosa Ultra-Trail promises to bring a new experience to ordinary locals and experienced athletes who are keen to discover the terrain of our subtropical parks and forests.

The brainchild of Noosa local Nick Stewart, pictured, an enthusiastic ultra-trail athlete, he is now proud to show off our wonderful backyard outside of sandy beaches and fine dining.

A distance for everyone, these trails are achievable to those with various fitness levels to enjoy.

Noosa’s hinterland is thick with trails taking cyclists and horse riders through its wonderful paths and Nick is delighted to present our beautiful region to both experienced and inexperienced trail runners.

Carefully mapping out 6 different courses, utilising sections of the existing trail network, all with different lengths and exposure, Nick has planned his distances to the finest detail.

“I’ve enjoyed some amazing experiences while trailing in Europe and Australia, so I wanted to bring everything that I love about the sport to Noosa” Nick explains.

We have shorter trails for beginners who may simply chose to walk the distance but with extensive trails of up to 100 km it is 24

advised that only experienced runners take on those challenges.

There are organised course marshal attendants, check point stations and a range of crew ensuring that all runners and walkers are looked after. All distances will include steep climbs, narrow pathed valleys, uneven terrain, and guaranteed adventure.

The weekend also includes an extensive range of experiences including yoga classes, ferry cruise, and an exclusive lunch with guest speakers creating an inclusive environment for athletes’ families.

Adhering to parks and wildlife conservation experts, athlete numbers are restricted so turning away people will not be easy but if the event is a success, we can do it all again another day!

For anyone without a horse or a mountain bike and keen to visit these elusive trails, being part of the event could be quite exciting.

The shortest distance is 15km and a good training ground would be to walk or run from Sunshine Beach to Coolum.

FROM THE STAGE TO THE PAGE TALENTED SUNSHINE COAST THESPIAN ALLI POPE-BAILEY HAS USED THE CHALLENGES OF COVID-19 TO TURN HER ATTENTION TO THE WORLD OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS AND PENNED A CHILDREN’S BOOK ADAPTATION OF HER STAGE PLAY SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN COOL DUDES.

For many locals, Alli’s face will be familiar as the face of Jally Entertainment which has been touring interactive children’s stage shows around the country for many years.

As an actor, director, producer and playwright, Alli is no stranger to telling stories.

For her latest project she joined forces with South Australian artist Ziggy Moskwa who has worked with Jally on set designs in the past and converted the stage show Snow White and the Seven Cool Dudes to an illustrated children’s book adaptation, Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes.

The book is described as being “an inclusive story, written to rhyme, on acceptance and kindness”.

Alli, whose other shows have included productions of Noah and the Ark, Aladdin and his Magic i-Pod, Little Red in the Hood, Cinderella Spinderella and Goldilocks Rocks, will be officially launching the books at Annie’s Books on Peregian on Saturday, January 8 from 10am.

Signed copies of the book will be available on the day, along with a chance to meet the author.

Facepainting, fairy cakes, music and fancy dress will be other highlights of the event with the person with the best costume on the day to receive a free copy of Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes.

Most golfers I work with, their objective is to improve their handicap and scores.

Yes hitting more fairways will make a big difference, but one underrated statistic to do this is hitting more greens in regulation. If you were able to combine this with a solid putting game you could decrease that score right down.

Here are THREE simple steps you can implement into your game today: 1.

Learn how far your clubs carry in the air and not just the total distance. For each

good shot you hit on the course, use a notepad and write how far it went.

2.

Measure the front of the green and ensure your club choice can carry that yardage. If you are ever between clubs, pick the club that finishes you in the middle of the green. Ie a pin at the front part of the green, choose the higher club, putting is always better than short!

3.

Allow “discrepancies” for the lie of your golf ball. If your golf ball is sitting in the rough, you won’t be able to make the same contact as a golf ball that’s on the fairway. Often this leads to less distance and less control on direction.
