By Fiona Ewington NOOSA TIGERS AFL CLUB CELEBRATED THEIR PRIDE ROUND IN MAY SUPPORTING SEXUAL EQUALITY AND INCLUSIVENESS WITHIN THE GAME.

The women’s team embraced the celebrations exchanging their team socks for rainbow-coloured socks and team members sported the rainbow flag on their cheeks.

everyone, regardless of gender preference to feel included and connected to a team, especially in AFL where opportunities for equality are really opening up” says instigator of Noosa’s pride round and team member Shanon Hill.

The Noosa Tiger’s women’s team are gaining a loyal following within the community. Their skills, fluidity and sheer passion for playing is securing respect from new supporters with every game.

KEEP THE PEACE ON NOISE THERE HAVE BEEN A TOTAL OF45 REPORTABLE POLICE OCCURRENCES IN THE EASTERN BEACHES SUBURBS DURING THE MONTH OF MAY 2021.

This is not the number of jobs Police have attended, this is only the number of reportable occurrences.

These include: Domestic Violence incidents – 13 Stealing/burglary – 5 Traffic Crash – 5 Traffic offences – 13 Mental Health Examination – 1 Found Property – 1 Investigative Warrant – 1 Lost Property – 2 Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle – 1 Steal from vehicle – 1 Noise Abatement Direction – 1 Wilful Damage – 1 There have been several enquiries made by members of the public recently in relation

to noise complaints. A noise complaint can be made during any time of the day or night.

Police will attend the provided address and assess if the noise is excessive.

If noise is excessive, residents will be spoken to. In some cases a Noise Abatement Direction may be issued.

A Noise Abatement Direction is a direction issued to a person, directing them to abate the noise for a period of 96 hours.

If a Noise Abatement Direction is contravened, an infringement notice will be issued and the item emitting the noise will be seized.

CORNER SHOP CASE DRAGS ON THE FUTURE OF THE FRIENDLY GROCER SITE ON THE CORNER OF PEREGIAN SQUARE IS NO CLEARER THIS MONTH, AS THE STOUSH BETWEEN DEVELOPER ANDEMA PTY LTD AND NOOSA COUNCIL DRAGS ON IN THE PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENT COURT IN BRISBANE.

Andema Pty Ltd, the owner and developer of the site, is appealing Noosa Council’s 2019 decision to reject it’s 2018 development plans and also attempting to resuscitate an expired 2012 material change of use approval that Council rejected in September 2020.

The case was set for review on 14 May, but the electronic court file shows the matter was then “adjourned after commencement” by Justice Everson.

Then on 24 May an order was made by Justice Jones with the matter now set for another review on 18 June.

The latest court documents filed by Andema’s lawyers on 13 May, give particulars as to why the Developer says the Court should approve it’s proposed three level development for the site.

On the issue of the lapsing of the DA Andema says in its documents that “on 4 June 2020, the Appellant made an application to extend the currency period of the Development Approval to 5 June 2022;” Andema reasoned “the time taken to make, assess and decide the Alternative Development Application and to have the Appeal heard and determined have delayed the implementation of the Development Approval.”

Documents on the electronic file so far from Noosa Council have so far have not mentioned the 2020 application by Andema to extend the Currency period.

Noosa Council said in its documents filed on 23 April “The Appellant has not provided an explanation as to why the original 6

development approval was not acted upon, nor why it was not acted upon after being extended in 2016”.

The site has been in front of council for nearly ten years.

The Material Change of use in 2012 was granted to the site’s previous owner, Dave Maloney Investments, who had submitted plans for a development that adhered to the Council plan and was approved in 2012.

Mr Maloney sold the site to Andema in September in 2016 with the DA for the adhering development in place.

However Andema then submitted a “minor amendment” to the existing harmonious plans to Noosa Council. Council deemed the changes “major” and not minor and requested new plans be submitted for assessment by Andema under the existing DA. Andema did so and Council rejected those plans.

Andema appealed that rejection to the Planning and Environment Court and while the appeal process was happening, the extended, approved, DA expired.

At the moment, the site remains in limbo while the outcome of the latest appeal is heard.

For the site’s former owner Mr Maloney, its current status is a sad state of affairs.

“It’s personally very disappointing that such a key site in the Peregian Square has sat vacant and in a state of decay for so many years,” Mr Maloney said.

“Over recent years the property has provided locals and visitors with a disgusting display of rubbish and left over shop equipment visible through the windows.

“The current owners should immediately show a basic level of respect to the community and other Peregian shop and restaurant owners who take such pride in the Peregian Square by doing something to make it less visually offensive”. easternbeachesnews.com.au

BECKMANS ROAD STAGE 1

Works have commenced on Beckmans Road Stage 1 with the removal of vegetation in preparation for building the roundabout.

Main construction is projected to commence later this year, weather and conditions permitting. My work is now to secure funding for Stage 2 which is the Eumundi- Noosa Rd intersection.

NOOSA RIVER NEWS

Information on the Noosa River Advisory Committee has been updated on Council’s website at https://www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ environment-waste/environment/riverscreeks and any questions regarding the work they are undertaking can be emailed to nrsac@noosa.qld.gov.au.

COASTAL HAZARDS PLAN

Concerns raised with us regarding the Coastal Hazards Adaptation Plan have been relayed to the Minister for Environment as it is extremely important that the community has the time to investigate any complexities as part of the consultation process.

HOUSING ACTION GROUP

The Housing Action Group met again in May to report on progress made including legislation around secondary dwellings, and access to worker accommodation, with 8

micro-apartments housing hospitality staff, and agreements with providers being negotiated.

AN EVENTFULL MONTH

Between Parliamentary sittings and multiple meetings, including with the Climate Council and the Legal Affairs and Safety Committee, there were also several events. This included discussing the future of Queensland Tourism with Queensland Future Conversations and the Launch of National Reconciliation Week.

As well, the Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Breakfast demonstrated the depth and breadth of those who work in one of the most difficult spaces, including the fabulous services and organisations who were in attendance.

COUNCIL NEWS WITH NOOSA MAYOR CLARE STEWART

SAFETY FIRST FOR RESIDENTS KIN KIN ROAD BATTLE CONTINUES

Safety of our residents must always come first, and we’ve called on the State Government to act in response to our Hinterland community’s concerns about the number of trucks using the Pomona Kin Kin Road.

I have now sent three letters to the Qld Transport Minister Mark Bailey asking for support.

Our hinterland residents are increasingly frightened for the safety of their loved ones, especially their children who regularly have to cross roads used by quarry trucks travelling at significant speed.

The Transport Infrastructure Act 1994 allows the State to restrict the use of state-controlled roads in order to prevent damage to road transport infrastructure or to ensure the safety of road users.

This piece of legislation that I highlighted to the Minister allows for the State to restrict the use of state-controlled roads according to vehicle class, time of day and by load weight Instigating this legislation (which only the Minister can do) will help safeguard against an accident or even worse a fatality and I have written to the Transport Minister and asked him to act immediately for the sake of our community.

SUNRISE BEACH AGED CARE

As we move towards the coastline, Council planning staff have finalised a number of amendments to Blue Care’s Sunrise Beach aged care home approval.

This development was approved by Sunshine Coast Council prior to deamalgamation and unfortunately the current Council cannot revisit the original approval granted a decade ago.

What we have done is implement minor changes late last year which will improve the environmental outcomes and mean that the site will be cleared in stages rather than all 10

at once, ensuring that large parts of the site will remain vegetated for some time to come.

The ecological rehabilitation plan also provides for the retention of some of the glossy black food trees on the site.

HAVE A SAY ON BUDGET

Council has now finalised its draft budget for 2021/22. This draft is currently out for community feedback, until June 7.

Council is committed to being open and transparent in developing the budget and this is the next stage in the budget development process.

All Councillors welcomed the initial feedback from residents, and we hope that the community takes advantage of the opportunity to review the draft budget and provide us with further feedback.

SOUND CREDIT RATING FOR COUNCIL

Speaking of finances, Council has received a sound credit rating following a credit review by the Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC).

This recognises Noosa Council’s strong financial management.

The QTC said the sound rating with a neutral outlook is underpinned by Noosa’s historical financial performance, relatively low debt levels and strong cash position.

The QTC completed the review based on information provided by Council up to February 2021.

INFRASTRUCTURE UNDER WAY

Bypass are underway. The final design for the new roundabout at the Cooroy-Noosa Road and Beckmans Road intersection has progressed. The design work completed so far has identified the alignment of the new intersection which means vegetation clearing and relocation of energy and water infrastructure can now start.

Of course, we are offsetting that vegetation clearing with extra tree planting to compensate.

This project is one of the most significant infrastructure projects for our community and it is terrific to see that works have finally started.

HERITAGE PORTAL

Construction has started on the boardwalk from beach access 57 at Peregian Beach. It will include a new shower and comes at a cost of $230,000.

From infrastructure to Heritage, Council has launched a new heritage portalwww.heritage.noosa.qld.gov.au.

The website includes Council’s historical image collection as well as other digital heritage such as maps, digital stories, oral histories and videos.

It’s interactive so residents can add to the content such as old photos and memorabilia from their own collections.

Council is inviting community groups to get involved and share their own historic

memorabilia and the stories of their organisations and activities on the website.

This project has been funded by the Noosa Council Heritage Levy and is one we are all very much excited about.

AN ENCHANTING EVENING

PEREGIAN PARK WAS TURNED INTO AN ENCHANTED PARTY VENUE ON MAY 22 AS THE FINALE OF THE VILLAGE VIBES FESTIVAL ROLLED OUT.

The fairy lights were dangling brightly from the trees surrounding a tented city of fun, music and native food, all in aid of raising some money towards a more permanent installation of enchanting lighting in and around Peregian’s main square to add another level to the already great atmosphere of the village.

FEDERAL NEWS WITH FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WIDE BAY LLEW O’BRIEN

BUDGET BRINGS WELCOME CASH FEDERAL BUDGET NEWS

The Federal Budget for 2021-22, handed down on May 11, is one of the most important in the history of our nation, with significant investments to continue the Morrison Government’s work to rebuild our economy, create jobs, and build infrastructure as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Budget contains a record $17.7 billion commitment to improve aged care, which includes an extra 80,000 new home care packages, and I will be working to ensure this funding is used to address the availability and quality of care in Noosa communities and throughout Wide Bay Along with Assistant Minister for Defence Andrew Hastie, I recently met with veterans at the Tewantin-Noosa RSL, where we discussed the urgent need for fair pay for Occupational Therapists and allied health professionals who care for veterans.

I’m pleased to report that in this Budget the Government has acted with a $61.9 million boost for these services, which will increase the availability and quality of care provided to veterans.

I also welcome $2.3 billion in the Budget for mental health and suicide prevention; $1.1 billion for women’s safety; and an increase of the Child Care Subsidy to for families with more than one child aged five and under.

TAX RELIEF

Around 49,100 taxpayers in Wide Bay will benefit from tax relief of up to $2,745 this year, from the extension of the low and middle income tax offset to 2021-22 and the decision to bring forward Stage 2 of the Government’s tax relief plan - leaving more money in the pockets of local families to spend and further stimulate the economy.

COUNCIL FUNDS

Noosa Council will receive $1,580,692 through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program to spend on priority projects, while the final stage of the Rufous Street Masterplan, the fantastic new Peregian Beach Community House, is scheduled to be finished by November with $1,517,500 allocated in the Budget as part of a $2,550,179 investment in the Peregian Beach community from the Australian Government.

WHAT’S ON

CHAIRS ADD A TOUCH OF DRAMA DECEIT, DRAMA, SHOCKING REVELATIONS AND HILARIOUS COMEDY - HOW MUCH CAN HAPPEN ON TWO DECKCHAIRS ON AN ENGLISH SEASIDE?

Turns out quite a lot! Audiences are in for a rollercoaster ride when Coolum Theatre Players brings to town it’s upcoming production of “Deckchairs 1” , a show of 5 “playlets” written by Jean McConnell that are by turns funny, poignant and surprising.

Each short play is set on the same two deckchairs but with two different characters in the chairs each time, creating a sense in the audience that they’re in the taboo space of the eavesdropper on the various duos’ personal conversations.

Director, Barbara Ryan, (pictured right, standing) says the touch of drama in the program is something audiences at CTP may not be used to but is still wonderfully balanced with comedy and a hint of live music.

Giving a few details of the plays, Barbara said: “Shoppers” is a riotous conversation between two well-to-do shopaholics who let out a rather surprising secret, “Early Blight” is a heart-breaking exploration of a doomed mother/daughter relationship, “Dancers” wittily dissects the tea-dancing world of two skittish women, “Late Frost” is a drama in which a life-long friendship faces it’s biggest challenge and “Doggies” is a hilarious tale about two very different types of dog-owners.”

With a cast of many locals, Deckchairs 1 is Community Theatre at it’s best with the troupe, as always, putting in their “all” in terms of preparation (on-stage and backstage) and performance.

Cast member and part of the “Shoppers” duo Janet Marshall (pictured above right seated) said she loves being on stage but despite meticulous preparation actors still get nervous and if you don’t, then “you haven’t 18

done it properly.” Julia Loaney, (pictured above left seated) who also plays in the “Shoppers” duo, says she ‘loves being on stage’ and ‘feeds off the laughter’ and ‘loves the interaction’.

Coolum Theatre Players welcomes interest from theatre-loving new members including backstage , lighting and front of house greeters. They’re currently particularly looking for a new member who’d enjoy volunteering to help with front of house .

“Deckchairs 1” is recommended for 18 years and over but children 15 years plus can be accompanied by a parent or care-giver.

Performance dates are at 7.30pm on Friday 16, Saturday 17, Saturday 24 July. Sunday matinees are at 2.00pm on 18 and 25 July.

THE J’S ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE

By Fiona Ewington AUSTRALIANS ARE HUGE SUPPORTERS OF TRIBUTE BANDS AND WITH INTERNATIONAL BORDERS CLOSED AND LIVE PERFORMERS EMERGING FROM COVID HIBERNATION, IT IS CURRENTLY A GREAT TIME FOR AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS TO TREAD THE BOARDS AND AND ENTERTAIN AGAIN.

Audiences are hungry for live entertainment and Noosa’s The J provided an ideal venue recently for the sellout Rockaria show - an ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) tribute band.

Rockaria is a band of eight live musicians who all provide additional vocals. Their big sound was a joy to hear in The J. Abiding to albeit relaxing COVID rules, meant everyone was seated, but for those who had a musical itch to scratch there was dancing in the aisles and banter with the crowd.

One audience member shouted, “I love you” to the young singer, whose cheeky reply was “I Love you too Mum”.

Another audience member offered $1000 if they would play his personal favorite song twice.

The J, in the heart of Noosa Junction was originally built as a youth centre, but the venue is now an entertainment venue attracting large crowds by booking an eclectic array of credible acts.

After 10 years of building itself up to be an audience attracting venue, COVID happened, and performers were sent home and tickets refunded. The J sat motionless for several months, with its car park being the main local COVID screening centre.

“The downtime gave us an opportunity to upgrade our ticketing system” General Manager Scott Braby said. “We were also able to carry out essential floor work without interruptions.”

But it was a lonely time for Noosa’s premier entertainment and community venue.

Things started to ramp up a bit at the end of 2020 with local schools using the venue for their performances but COVID-Safe event plans meant the venue’s audience numbers were restricted. By January Government restrictions were relaxed again and their first sell out gig in months was with Irish Comedian Jimeoin bringing the house down.

The J also provides an area for conferences and community hub. Ultraman used the facility as a base for their athletes and with its own kitchen and lounge area it served as a comfortable refuge for those evacuated from their homes during the 2019 bush fires.

With the J in Noosa firmly on the list of promoters keen for their acts to perform here, the J is busier than ever.

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

DEALING WITH THE SETBACKS One of my favourite recreation activities is playing AFL. My body has been feeling the best it’s been since having my right ACL (knee) repaired five years ago. This has caused me to be braver in taking the game on.

Well, that was until last weekend. I was making a run for goal with the ball when an opposition player hit my good knee and it buckled, sending me to ground. Now I await the dreaded results of the MRI. To say it will be a setback to my illustrious AFL career would be an understatement.

We all face setbacks at some point in our life (financial, health, relationship). How we deal and/or respond can be the determining factor of how we move forward.

GIVE YOURSELF TIME.

We need to allow time to acknowledge and deal with the disappointment that comes from the setback. Sometimes it can be painful especially when goals and expectations have to be re-calibrated. It’s ok to feel loss and grief for a time as long as you don’t get stuck and leave it too long until you move forward.

The encouragement of significant others can be a true source of strength.

BE MINDFUL OF YOUR SELF-TALK AND ADOPT A CAN-DO ATTITUDE.

Our thinking plays a large role in what happens next. Embrace setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. The process

of working through the setback can develop a deeper and more meaningful sense of self and purpose.

FIND A PATH TO PROGRESS AND MOVE FORWARD.

Reflect on the setback and ask yourself the ‘Now What’ questions.

Now what do I need to change?

Now what do I need to do differently?

Now what do I need to move on from?

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL AND NOT ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARE OUT OF YOUR CONTROL.

Sometimes the very circumstances we can’t control can cause us to change direction which in turn can lead us to find success in areas we didn’t expect.

We can always control our attitude and outlook.

Someone once told me that the experiences we value most in life are often the ones that are the most challenging. They push us to grow, develop and learn.

So remember, a setback is a setup for a comeback!!
