Winter’s gone, Spring is here, and with it comes a mad month of fun in our house.

It’s birthday season, with two of the four of us in our little family celebrating another year around the sun and Father’s Day on top of that to keep it interesting. It’s also the lead in to school holidays, football and sporting finals and an indicator that the “big term” is on the way for the children and the final push to Christmas for the adults.

For our local small businesses and their staff, anyone who usually travels interstate for work, and parents of school aged children the threat of COVID-19 continues to linger.

It seems to be the number one topic of conversation right now, whether it’s what’s

happening in the rest of the country and the likelihood of more lockdowns here, or who’s getting vaccinated, and who’s not, and why.

Aside from the physical impact on those who have contracted the disease, the mental impact of COVID and all the drama that’s come with it cannot be underestimated.

Living with such uncertainty, the job losses, missing out on milestone events such as weddings and funerals, and the intense pressure right now on rental and housing markets have put a lot of people in some pretty challenging situations.

This September, more than ever before, it seems to make good sense that we should heed the message of R U OK Day and check in on our friends and family to make sure they are “really” ok. For a few tips on asking those questions, see the story on page 3. Geoff

R U Ok Day community ambassador Justin Geange, who is also a Mates in Construction Field Officer, said it was really important to dig deep when talking to people to understand whether they were “really” ok.

Justin said he’d found staying connected to people, checking in, grabbing a coffee with them and creating meaningful moments had helped him to help others find help and avoid the risk of suicide. He said listening to understand, not to respond helped, as did being aware of stressors such as job loss or the loss of a loved one.

person in need, to guide them to seek advice, to stand with them on the journey, and to check in with them along the way to make sure they were still ok.

On the Sunshine Coast, males account for four out of five reported suicides with the majority aged between 40 to 60 years.

The hunt for other ways to help those at risk continues too. At the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute scientists are testing the use of oral ketamine as part of a treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Rotary Noosa Daybreak, Australian Rotary Health Research Foundation and the University of the Sunshine Coast are funding a Doctoral Student for the research.

WATCH OUT - MAGPIES ARE OUT! IT’S MAGPIE SEASON AND TIME TO TAKE CARE AROUND THEIR NESTS.

Sunshine Coast Council Natural Areas Conservation Officer Tyron de Kauwe said not all magpies swoop.

“Magpies are pretty amazing birds and in fact only 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop,” Mr de Kauwe said.

“Magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years and can identify individuals by their facial features, even recognising all the people in their neighbourhood.

“When they walk around with their head tilted, they are actually listening for prey and are capable of hearing earthworms and larvae moving underground.

“They are also extraordinary parents, looking after their young for up to two years.”

Mr de Kauwe offered the following tips on staying safe during swooping season.

“Swooping begins once the eggs are hatched and ends once the chicks have left the nest, which is about six to eight weeks,” Mr de Kauwe said.

“When you see male magpies defending their territory, understand they are merely defending their young.

“Move quickly through the area but do not run. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses or use an umbrella. Dismount and walk your bike and, where possible, walk in groups – or avoid the area altogether.

“Don’t act aggressively towards them as they have a very long memory, and this will just encourage further defensive behaviour in the future.”

Magpies are protected under the Nature Conservation Act. Penalties for injuring magpies vary based on circumstances.

ENCOURAGING NATIVE PLANTING WHAT BETTER TIME TO LAUNCH A BROCHURE ON LOCAL PLANTS THAN WHEN OUR WILDFLOWERS ARE BLOOMING?.

With Spring in the air the team at Coolum and North Shore Coast Care have launched the fifth edition of their Take another Look – Our Locals are Beauties, booklet that encourages home gardeners to plant native wildflowers rather than exotic species.

The pocket-sized booklet contains descriptions and colour photographs of over 60 native species suitable for coastal gardens, as well as 40 weedy garden / pasture escapes to avoid.

Coolum and North Shore Coast Care President Leigh Warneminde said the group was proud of the brochure’s longevity and continued relevance to the community.

“The first edition was created in 2000 by Coast Care volunteers.

“This fifth edition has been updated with new entries supplementing the more familiar species.

“We retained the original, widely-recognised, 6

cover design for continuity.”

Ms Warneminde paid tribute to generous donations which provided the funds to print the new edition.

Donors included the Hull Family and Coolum Beach Surf Life Savers (Supporters) Club, plus the Container Deposit Scheme.

“We hope that the donors will be pleased with the final product” she said “Local coastal native plants have evolved over thousands of years to thrive in our sandy, salty and windy conditions.

“They are part of what makes our area special.”

Ms Warneminde said that the booklet will help landscapers and gardeners to recognise some of the Sunshine Coast’s native plants and to choose the right ones to enhance their gardens.

Planting local native species helps retain our unique natural environment.

GRANT WINS FOR LOCAL CLUBS THANKS TO VOLUNTEERS

II’d like to start this column by saying a big thank-you to all the community groups and their volunteers who donate their precious time, energy and passion into delivering services to our community and environment.

In late August, Council partnered with 138 community groups and 19 environmental groups to provide funding for three years.

Through the Community Partnership Funding Program, 138 Sunshine Coast community organisations received a share of $990,000 each year for the next three years to help cover operational costs such as rent, communications and administration.

And through the Environment Levy Partnership Funding Program 19 groups will share in $610,000 each year for the next three years to also cover operational expenses.

This support means these groups can invest their time and energy into their core work, whether it be caring for our wildlife and natural environment, managing community halls or a sporting association, supporting business and industry through the chamber of commerce, as well as much more.

STATE NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

MOVEMENT ON ROAD WORKS UPDATE ON ROADWORKS

Locals would be well aware of the poor condition of Yandina Coolum Road west of the Sunshine Motorway.

Earlier this year I recorded a video from inside the cab with a local truck driver, highlighting just how dangerous the road surface is.

With the road having been listed in RACQ’s top ten worst roads, it was welcome news when TMR responded to our calls with a commitment to resurfacing some of the road.

We had been told the work was happening in April, and after numerous inquiries about its status, we’ve now been told it’s been delayed, but should be completed before the end of the year. As soon as we have a start date, I will let the community know.

In other road news, some testing and sampling works are due to start on the Sunshine Motorway and David Low Way overpass at Pacific Paradise from Monday 6 September.

These works will involve taking samples of the four bridge surfaces to assist with future surfacing, and will be completed between the hours of 6pm-6am over an eight day period.

There may be some delays due to lane closures for the duration of these works, so please remember to slow down and observe signage when travelling in this area.

PARLIAMENT

It’s back to Parliament this week, with the draft Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation one WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP TRAIN AN ASSISTANCE DOG?

PTSD Dogs Australia is looking for dog-loving families who would love to welcome a dog into their home for the duration of their training to become an Assistance Dog for sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Since launching in 2018 the charity has 14

of the bills expected to be debated.

I’ve spent the last couple of months surveying the community, and I am grateful to everyone who has taken the time to share their views and their personal stories.

I’ve also met with a range of stakeholders representing both sides of the argument, and I intend to carefully review all the feedback before making a decision.

Other important legislation due to be debated in the next sitting period also includes the bill to extend the Government’s emergency powers.

Lockdowns and ongoing restrictions have come at the expense of many people’s livelihoods, not to mention the impact on physical, emotional and mental health.

At this time, our priority must be reaching that critical 70-80% vaccination rate, so we can start rebuilding our economy, and a pathway out of the pandemic.

That starts with each and every one of us, and ensuring we get vaccinated.

PUSH FOR VACCINATION TARGET COVID UPDATE

PARALYMPIC SUCCESS

The COVID-19 vaccination rollout continues to gather momentum as we strive to reach our first objective of 70% double-dose vaccination for all eligible Australians aged over 16 years.

We have been fortunate on the Sunshine Coast, so far, to have avoided any serious outbreak of the Delta variant, and I’d urge all to get vaccinated for I fear Delta will make its way here at some point.

If you’re a business owner who’s been impacted by the pandemic, the Federal and State governments have reached an agreement to provide additional financial support.

A huge congratulations to all the Sunshine Coast athletes who have travelled to Tokyo for the Paralympics. As always, they have done themselves, their families, and their country proud, with so many well-deserved medals.

HIGHWAY UPGRADES

There was fantastic news recently for everyone on the Sunshine Coast, with a major milestone reached on the Bruce Highway upgrade at the Maroochydore and Mons Road interchanges.

A new, eastern service road bridge over the Eudlo Creek at Forest Glen has now been completed.

Work on the $300 million project which is 80% funded by the Federal Government is ahead of schedule, and when it is completed, sometime late next year, it will allow more efficient traffic flow and greater capacity, which will mean Sunny Coast residents get home sooner and safely.

AFGHANISTAN SITUATION

As the terrible news surrounding the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan continues to unfold, my prayers and thoughts are with the Afghan people and the brave men and women of the Australian Defence Force. Throughout this conflict our servicemen and women have put themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedoms, our way of life and people in need, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for their service. I urge anyone who needs support as a result of this tragic situation, or knows someone who does, to reach out for help.

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

LIVING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT ON SUNDAY THE 1ST OF AUGUST I WAS SUPPOSED TO HOLD MY ANNUAL CONCERT FUNDRAISER FOR CHAPLAINCY.

I was at the shops the morning before when the Music Director called me to tell me of the impending lockdown.

To say that we were both extremely disappointed at having to cancel the concert would be an understatement.

Over the last month I have talked to many like me who have had to deal with the disappointment of cancelling holidays, weddings and events.

Disappointment is a strong emotion often not talked about and can hover at the front of your mind and niggle at the back bringing you a grey perspective on life.

Here are a few tips to overcome it.

1. LET IT OUT

Speak to a friend, family member, or even a therapist about how the disappointment has affected you.

Too often (particularly men) we just suppress and bottle our feelings.

Writing or even drawing in a journal can be a great tool to let out our feelings as well.

It is important to give yourself some time to feel and express your disappointment.

3.HAVE SOME PERSPECTIVE.

It can feel like the end of the world when you experience disappointment.

Having a broader perspective than your own view on a situation can alleviate the power disappointment holds.

Being open to talking and listening to others can help you gain a larger view perspective 4. LIVE IN THE MOMENT

The disappointment you may have could be a result of something that is totally out of your control, like Covid.

Accept it and focus on what you can do today.

Be present in what you have in front of you now and not caught up in the hangups of the past.

5. EVALUATE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

Disappointment can be a result of unrealistic expectations we have of ourselves and others.

Ask yourself, will this matter in a month, 6 months or a year’s time?

Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill, rather be flexible enough to adjust your expectations.

2. DON’T BROOD, RATHER MOVE ON

Don’t get trapped in your disappointment but come to terms with the circumstances and move forward.

I have come across many people who have let the past severely restrict and limited their future.

Winston Churchill said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm”.

LIVE ART CAPTURES HISTORY WONDERED WHAT THE STRANGE CONTRAPTION ON THE BOARDWALK HAS BEEN THIS MONTH?

Well, wonder no more.

Libby Derham, pictured right, had the honour of being the first of 10 “Keepers” involved in a new live public art project for Coolum that aims to capture the essence of our great suburb in pictures, words, and even performance art.

Libby, a fourth-generation watercolourist, has been capturing local stories for weeks and Sunshine Coast Council Divisional Councillor Maria Suarez encouraged everyone who lived, worked or played in Coolum to contribute to the project and be part of the story.

“You’ll find the first Keeper, Libby Derham, capturing the unique sites and stories of the moment as she paints her way along the Coolum Boardwalk,” Cr Suarez said.

“Each day the Keeper compiles a log of their journey by typewriter, stationed in their office, in a public corner of the Coolum Library.

“Stop to say hello, ask questions and you may just see your story, conversation or discovery captured in the Keeper’s log or if you don’t feel like chatting, just enjoy seeing this epic work on paper as it comes to life.”

Libby’s first log noted she talked to “lots of fabulous people”, explored “the first 20 metres of the boardwalk” and discovered “faraway vistas…aqua colours of ocean depths…”

Since then she has discovered untold stories of indigenous artefacts, the healing power people have found in Coolum and curious onlookers starting to slow down and talk.

said each artist would engage with the community for three weeks before passing the role on to the next keeper.

“The ten artists come from a range of creative disciplines including visual arts, music, spoken word and interdisciplinary practice,” Ms Rowland said “The artists and project will be informed by the deep knowledge of place shared by Kabi Kabi elder Lyndon Davis.”

The project was developed in collaboration with Field Theory and piloted in Coolum in November 2019 and is delivered by Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Red Chair and takes place in Coolum from July 2021 until March 2022. There will be a public call out for more Keepers in October 2021.
