IT’S XANADU Roll in for a taste of the 80s

SURF RANCH IN LIMBO WHERE, OR IF, A WORLD SURF LEAGUE WAVE POOL USING KELLY SLATER WAVE SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY WILL BE BUILT ON THE SUNSHINE COAST REMAINS A MYSTERY.

The pool is a central pillar of a proposed development by Consolidated Properties Group on 510 hectares of land off Yandina Coolum Rd to the west of the Sunshine Coast Motorway.

The development is proposed to also include a 6-star eco-lodge, event and training facilities, tourism accommodation, indigenous cultural experiences, and 1500 residential properties.

The project has been under discussion with the State Government since 2019 with its Coolum News - March 2021

developers requiring a change of zoning to allow the project to proceed.

Consolidated Properties Group CEO and Chairman Don O’Rorke told Coolum News this week the project is still being considered by the Government.

“We are currently working with the State Government to work out the most effective planning process to deliver certainty to the region, our investors, and facilitate the delivery of the project in a timely and effective way,” Mr O’Rorke said.

“The State Government is still considering the project and we are working to a decision of Government on the project proceeding.”

As we were going to print this month the final steps were being taken by the State Government and Sunshine Coast Council to enable Anzac Day ceremonies to be held in a similar fashion to pre-COVID times.

Crowd restrictions will not apply, however commonsense and a requirement for those feeling ill to stay at home remains in play.

The Dawn Service and parade at Coolum / Peregian RSL on David Low Way has always been well organised and well attended. For more, see our story on page 3.

Another win for the local community is the announcement of plans for an eco-tourism venue at Barns Lane in Coolum on the land

near the primary school that was once mooted for a Bunnings store. While it’s only early days, the plans appear to have been well received by the community so far (see story, page 6).

Another development that appears to be going nowhere fast is the proposed Surf Ranch at Coolum West that we feature on page 1.

It’s been more than two years since World Surf League first mooted the concept with the State Government and flagged the need for planning overrides to allow it to happen.

While the developers are flagging jobs and investment, environmentalists are worried about the impact the project will have on the floodplains. It’s time for the Government to make a call on it and let all sides move on to whatever steps might come next.

ANZAC SERVICES BACK ON In good news for the organisers of Anzac Day Services, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told Parliament on February 23 that all “Dawn services, marches and all other Anzac Day events will be as they were prior to this pandemic”.RSL Queensland has confirmed that events at Tewantin Noosa RSL and Coolum / Peregian Beach Sub Branch would proceed.

RANCH PLANS IN STATE HANDS From page 1 “We are focused on creating local benefits for Sunshine Coasters, including increased parklands and open spaces for the community, high-value eco-tourism, and more visitors to the region,” Mr O’Rorke said.

“WSL (World Surf League) has been considering a number of sites across Australia for a Surf Ranch development.

“We think the Sunshine Coast is a natural home for a Surf Ranch, given its culture, history and roots within surfing as well as its pristine beaches and commitment to environmental sustainability.

“We believe our values and beliefs very much align with those of the Sunshine Coast region.

“The project will deliver $1.24 billion of private investment, is expected to create 10,000+ jobs and will help to diversity and strengthen the Sunshine Coast and Queensland economy.”

State Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie, who as an LNP member sits on the Opposition side of the Chamber in State Parliament, said he had some concerns over the development.

“Development Watch and other community groups have raised legitimate concerns about flooding and the environment, and I share their concerns. While the Wave Park ticks a lot of boxes, I am concerned about overdevelopment and congestion.”

“The State Government has been in discussions with the proponent for many years, with the proponent even taking the Labor State Minister for Tourism surfing with Kelly Slater in California long before I, or the community, were aware of the proposed development.”

Exactly what happens next appears dependent on State Government.

“The State Government ultimately needs to provide the planning framework for us to progress the investment and the opportunity - so whichever course they steer us on, that’s the one we’ll take,” said Consolidated Properties CEO and Chairman Don O’Rorke.

GREEN PLANS FOR BARNS LANE PLANS FOR A PROPOSED AGRIFOOD/TOURISM DESTINATION AT THE MOTORWAY ENTRY TO COOLUM HAVE RECEIVED AN EARLY BOOST WITH KEY COMMUNITY GROUP, DEVELOPMENT WATCH, SIGNALLING SUPPORT FOR THE CONCEPT.

A development application was lodged with Council on February 18 by Brisbane firm Mewing Planning Consultants on behalf of BLF Coolum Pty Ltd the new owner of the Barns Lane site at Coolum next to Coolum Primary School.

The application asks Council to assess an eco-tourism venture on the 6.8 hectare site that will include a working farm, food attractions such as a seasonal local produce hall, gin distillery, brewery, restaurant, bakery and more.

Sunshine Coast’s “Development i” website shows that a Town Planning report and other associated documents were lodged with Council planners on 18 February, along with a letter of endorsement from local Community Group Development Watch.

The Development Watch letter, addressed to Project Co-Founders, Jason Grant and Jonathon Leishman, thanks the pair for showing the group the concept plans for the Barns Lane proposal and goes on to say “DW supports your concept, subject to Council’s assessment and approval” adding “If it comes to fruition, it will be an asset to Coolum Beach.”

In a press release issued on February 18 co-founder Jason Grant said they want the “Barns Lane Farm to be a local gathering spot and a place that draws tourists in to learn about our dynamic and diverse region.”

“Local really is key for us. We aim to empower the community through a range of excitingly unique initiatives, while also committing to holistic sustainability and the environment through responsible supply8

chain and waste measures.”

The new rural-based tourism venture is coowned and operated by experienced property developer Jason Grant, and successful businessman Jonathan Leishman, whose working relationship spans decades across various developments and family projects.

“To be able to combine our love and passion of the land, culture, mountains and of course food and beer, in a setting as convenient and breathtaking as Coolum is truly an honour,” Mr Leishman said.

The plan is to open mid-2022, pending Council approval. Final stages will include a 26-room boutique hotel suite for rural destination weddings and events.

CHOIR TO SING FOR ST VINNIES WAVES OF HARMONY COMMUNITY CHOIR WILL TAKE TO THE SHADE OF THE PANDANUS TREE OUTSIDE THE SHOP ON DAVID LOW WAY AT COOLUM FROM 10AM ON MARCH 28 TO RAISE MONEY FOR ST VINCENT DE PAUL.

The choir is made up of about 20 locals who love to sing. It performs in 3 or 4 part harmony with a piano accompanist under the direction of Linda Gefken.

Choir member Peter Howard said the group had been celebrating the return of rehearsals this year and they were looking forward to bringing their talents to the streets in honour of a worthy cause and to play for an audience again. The choir, which is always looking for new members, rehearses regularly at St Peter’s in Coolum.

FAMILY GATHERS TO HONOUR BEA’S 100TH CURLY’S ON THE BOARDWALK WAS THE PLACE TO BE ON FEBRUARY 21 WHEN BEA MEEN CELEBRATED HER 10OTH BIRTHDAY IN STYLE SURROUNDED BY HER FAMILY.

Bea’s journey to the Sunshine Coast started in Hammersmith, England, where she was born on 21 February 1921 as one of the oldest children in a family of 8 children.

She joined the Royal Air Force WAFs to help during World War 2 after graduating from school and married a Navigator James Pugsley in 1942. Sadly she was widowed in March 1945 at the end of WW2.

Looking for a better life, and with two small children in tow, she headed to Australia and found work at Tambo in outback Queensland as a Hostel Assistant Matron which allowed her to be with her children.

She found love again and married Eric Meen in 1962. Eric was an organist and pianist, Bea a secretary, and they worked and travelled overseas extensively with Bea capturing many of their travels in watercolouring paintings.

Bea and Eric settled in Cootharaba in 1986 on a large property and Bea stayed there until Eric died. At 90, she moved into a retirement villa and became known as Busy Bea as she was always on the move. She now lives at Estia Health Aged Care at Mt Coolum.

Last month, it’s was wonderful to work with children at C&K Coolum to replant a new fig tree outside the Coolum Library.

Unfortunately the existing tree was dying and posed a public safety risk, and had to be removed by council.

Children who attended C&K Coolum who were quite attached to the tree. They would sit under it, look for birds in it – it provided a special way for the children to connect with nature.

The children watched as the tree was removed, fascinated with the machinery and the skills of the arborists and asked what would happen now the tree was gone.

In answer, council invited the children to join in with the workers to plant a replacement tree. With hats, shoes, sunscreen Hi-Viz vests and gardening gloves on (donated by council), the children ventured into the park to plant the replacement tree (see the image).

And have loving named it ‘Banyan’.

The process to develop a new planning scheme for the region is set to start soon and will play out over a number of years.

It’s time to start thinking about what you need to understand to make sure you can make a good quality submission for a new scheme.

Issues that are currently raised by the community are excessive site cover, height and density, and the environmental impacts on flood plains, remnant vegetation and lack of green spaces and natural shade.

I’ll be keeping you updated on key dates and activities and encouraging you to get involved.

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

PUSHING FOR ROADWORKS EASTER TIME

I can’t believe Easter is just around the corner!

With Parliament having resumed, I’ve used the opportunity to question the Minister for Transport and Main Roads about the $100,000 that was allocated to the survey and design of upgrades to the failing roundabout at School Road and Yandina Coolum Road.

I also asked the Minister to commit funds for important safety and maintenance upgrades for that section of Yandina Coolum Road west of the Motorway.

I am contacted almost daily by motorists and residents who are fed up with the increased traffic, particularly heavy vehicles, and the poor condition of the road surface.

The road has also had the dubious honour of being included in the RACQ’s top 10 worst roads, so it’s time it was put on the priority list, and funding allocated to upgrade it.

YOUTH JUSTICE ACT

I also spoke about the government’s proposed reforms to the Youth Justice Act, and giving our hardworking police the laws and resources they need to help keep our community safe.

After receiving feedback from my former colleagues in QPS, I have my reservations about the reforms, specifically whether they go far enough.

The Government tabled the proposed amendments late last month, and these will be scrutinised by the Legal Affairs and Safety Committee before coming back before the House next month. Stay tuned for an update in coming weeks.

SPORTS GRANTS AVAILABLE OLYMPICS UPDATE

As you may know, I’m the Prime Minister’s representative for South East Queensland’s bid to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Last month, we entered the last stage of the bid process and if we’re successful, it means the Sunshine Coast will join Brisbane and the Gold Coast in hosting an Olympic Games.

Now’s the time to really support our young athletes, like Emmanuel Butterworth of Coolum High School, to whom I awarded a Local Sporting Champion (LSC) Award for participating in the Queensland School Sport State Championships for basketball.

I encourage young sports people aged 12-18 who are participating in state, national or international championships to apply for a grant through the LSC Award programme.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT

I was honoured to officially open the new sensory garden at St Andrew’s Anglican College recently and congratulate them on their successful application to the Local Schools Community Fund programme.

St Andrew’s was one of 11 schools in Fairfax to benefit from a share in the $200,000 fund.

ROAD SAFETY FUNDING

I am receiving positive feedback from Peregian Springs community members following the announcement of Federal Government funding for two local road safety projects: • $570,000 for new safety screens on the Sunshine Motorway/Havana Rd pedestrian overpass; and • $350,000 for a new pedestrian refuge on the Yandina-Coolum Rd, east of School Rd. While both projects are on State-controlled roads, the lion’s share of the funding has been provided by the Federal Government on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis so the projects can be fasttracked for delivery by the end of June this year. I’m working with State MP Dan Purdie who’s calling on the Queensland Government to provide the balance of the funds and get the job done.

FIND TIME TO REFLECT EACH DAY HOW DO YOU FINISH YOUR DAY?

Each day can tend to roll into the next and I feel it can be like running on a treadmill that doesn’t stop?

We live in a fast paced society that, at times can leave us feeling exhausted, anxious and stressed about tomorrow.

Do you struggle at the end of the day with feelings of guilt about not achieving what you had planned, or progressing in the manner in which you would have liked?

Is the weight of not attaining your expectations getting you down?

Setting aside time at the end of the day to intentionally reflect and reset can help you deal with these negative thought patterns and feelings.

Here are some suggestions on how to reflect on your day: Reflect on how you used your time and set priorities for tomorrow.

We all have the same amount of time but some use it more effectively. Have you utilised it well or could you make some adjustments for tomorrow? Prioritising tomorrow’s activities will make it more productive.

Guard against pinning your hopes and happiness on achieving your expectations.

Having expectations is fantastic but life can throw you many curve balls. Achieving your expectations shouldn’t determine your level of happiness.

BOOKFEST BACK ON Booklovers rejoice! The annual Rotary Noosa Daybreak Bookfest Noosa event is making a comeback at the end of April.

Known as one of the biggest second hand book sales on the Sunshine Coast the Bookfest will be held at the Noosa Leisure Centre from 9am to 5pm, Friday April 30 to 20

Learn from your mistakes and failures.

We all make them but not all of us learn from them.

They are a valuable learning tool which can help us make adjustments and can cause us to make changes that will lead to a greater level of success.

Self-reflection can be a simple yet extremely powerful practice.

Pausing for reflection helps you make meaning of your day’s experiences. Revisiting moments with a clearer mind and some distance can help you maintain perspective and give you ideas for tomorrow.

Develop the habit of journaling.

You don’t have to make it a long process but intentionally reflecting on the following 5 questions can contribute significantly to the success of your tomorrow.

1. What went well?

2. What could I do differently?

3. What did I learn?

4. What am I grateful for?

5. What key moments were in my day?

So why don’t you try having a cup of tea at the end of the day, for the next couple of weeks, to reflect. Maybe it will be the start of something that causes you to find a new level of success in your tomorrow. Happy reflecting!

GET SET TO ESCAPE TO XANADU ROLLERSKATES, GLITTER BALLS, FLUFFY LEG WARMERS AND A FLOOD OF COLOURFUL SPANDEX CAN BE FOUND ROLLING AROUND THE STAGE AS THE CAST OF COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS’ NEXT SHOW, XANADU, LOCK IN THE LAST REHEARSALS BEFORE OPENING NIGHT.

Based on the cult movie classic of the same name (which starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly), the stage show follows the journey of magical Greek muse Kira who descends from Mt Olympus and lands at Venice Beach in 1980 on a quest to inspire struggling artist Sonny to achieve the greatest artistic achievement of all time – the first Roller Disco.

Abby Bowyer, pictured above right, who has the lead female role of Kira in the show said it was exciting to be involved.

“I have always been drawn to, and inspired by, the freedom and exploration found within the various forms of the performing arts,” Abby said.

“It can provide opportunities for anyone to tap into their own unique and infinite well of creativity and self-expression.

“I am lucky to have grown up in a very active and creative Pic: Anjie Gee Clever Girl Productions family and community, with many hours spent on and around the stage from a young age.

“One of my biggest inspirations is my grandmother Rita, who is still choreographing, teaching and offering various creative classes to her local community at 83.”

CTP will hold a preview of their new show on April 14, before the opening of the season proper with shows on April 16, 17, 23, 24 at 7.30pm and April 18 and 25 at 2pm.

April’s Sunday on the Green is on Easter Sunday (from 2-4 pm) and it will have food trucks offering Smoky BBQ, Asian Noodles and a Sausage Sizzle as well as local band Granite Solid Rock playing from 2.30pm to 6.30pm.

The bar is open from 2pm and there will be a kids jumping castle too.

The event is a great afternoon out for those out for a friendly chill with mates as well as families - the parents can relax while the kids have fun in a safe environment.

EASTER

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE EASTER? EGGS AND BUNNIES ASIDE, WE ASKED LOCAL LEADERS FROM THE VARIOUS CHRISTIAN DENOMINATIONS THEIR THOUGHTS ON WHAT EASTER REALLY MEANS...

“Everyone loves a celebration – birthdays, weddings, graduations. But no one celebrates death ... except Christians.

Easter is about celebrating a death that turned into the greatest birth ever.

It began with a birth, too, as all deaths must.

To understand Easter, we need to start with Christmas.

God – the instigator of the big bang, the guide of evolution, the force who holds the universe in being – that God chose to become human so that we would know that we are never alone, that God loves us and is with us no matter what. Baby Jesus grew up and encountered the worst that humans experience: torture and execution. That’s what we celebrate on Good Friday.

Celebrate? Yes, because Good Friday continues the message of Christmas: we are never alone, God is with us, even in the greatest pain and suffering, even in death.

The death of Jesus, God-with-us, means that he accompanies us in dying and death.

God did not allow evil to triumph. God raised Jesus from the dead. That’s what Easter means – the death and resurrection of Jesus, God-with-us, means when we die, we will be welcomed into the embrace of God who is perfect love. That is worth celebrating!

Jesus’ death and resurrection means that he paid the penalty for all our sins. We can be forgiven, for whatever we have done 24

The Easter story also gives us certainty regarding our future. When we place our trust in Jesus and ask him to forgive our sins, we receive the gift of eternal life and the guarantee of Heaven. We no longer have to fear death because we have incredible hope that we will be with God forever.

Which story does Easter represent and does it make any difference?

For Christians, the meaning of Easter is Jesus Christ’s victory over death. His resurrection symbolises the eternal life that is granted to all who believe in Him. However, Easter did not always symbolise Christ’s resurrection from the dead.

The meaning of Easter used to be quite different than what Christians celebrate today.

The feast day of Easter was originally a pagan celebration of renewal and rebirth.

Celebrated in the early Spring, it honoured the pagan Saxon goddess Eastre.

When the early missionaries converted the Saxons to Christianity, they merged this pagan celebration with the new life we now have in Jesus Christ.”

RECORD SALES FOR CALENDAR COOLUM AND NORTH SHORE COAST CARE HIT ON A WINNING FORMULA WITH THEIR LATEST CALENDAR SELLING MORE THAN 1000 COPIES FOR 2021 AND HITTING A NEW RECORD.

Calendar Committee Chair Lutz Kramer said they could not have done it without local support.

“We are so grateful for the support of our local businesses and community, with the Coolum Native Nursery, Wagtail Coffee and Mitre 10 being our top sales supporters,” Lutz said. “We are pleased to announce a record number of our main fundraiser sold. Over 1000 calendars is the highest number sold in nine years of producution of this pictures calendar compiled by photos donated by local residents.”

Lutz said the challenge was set now to go one better for the 10th anniversary edition next year and the group would be opening submissions later this month for pictures
