he Annual Land Investment Expo presented by Peoples Company is catered to individuals and institutions that are investing in or interested in learning more about investing in land. The Expo brings together varying facets of the land industry and provides knowledge, ideas and networking opportunities for land professionals and investors. “Agribusiness Report” host Ken Root moderates the Expo, which features keynote addresses by industry experts in agricultural production, land development, rural economic development and farm policy. Speaker Profiles Jim Rogers

Investment Expert and Author Jim Rogers is an internationally recognized business author and financial commentator with a passion for travelling the world in search of sound investment strategies. After fulfilling his lifelong dream of motorcycling 100,000 miles across six continents, a feat that landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records, Rogers chronicled his one-of-a-kind journey in “Investment Biker: On the Road with Jim Rogers.” In 1999, the Demopolis, Ala. native embarked on a Millennium Adventure, travelling the world for three years and obtaining his third Guinness listing. That 245,000-kilometer trip took him through 116 countries as recounted in his book, “Adventure Capitalist: The Ultimate Road Trip.” As a private investor, Rogers constantly analyzed the countries through which he traveled for investment ideas. He has been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Forbes, Fortune, The Washington Post, The Financial Times, and Time magazine. He also appears a regular commentator and columnist in various media, and has been a professor at Columbia University. After attending Yale University and Oxford University, Rogers cofounded the Quantum Fund, a global investment partnership.

During the next 10 years, the portfolio gained 4,200 percent as the S&P 500 rose less than 50 percent. Rogers then decided to retire at age 37. Continuing to manage his own portfolio, he kept busy serving as a professor of finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, and, in 1989 and 1990, as the moderator of WCBS’s “The Dreyfus Roundtable” and FNN’s “The Profit Motive with Jim Rogers.” Rogers’ book “Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably In The World’s Best Market” was published in 2004. He also authored “A Bull in China,” which describes Rogers’ experiences, as well as the changes and opportunities in that market. He recently published his latest book, “A Gift to My Children.”

Dr. Mark G. Doztour

Real Estate Expert and Economist Dr. Mark Dotzour is Chief Economist and Director of Research with Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He earned his Ph.D. in the Department of Finance at the University of Texas at Austin in 1987, and served as Associate Professor of Real Estate and Finance at Wichita State University for 10 years. Dr. Dotzour has been at the Real Estate Center since August 1997. As Chief Economist, he conducts market research to monitor how global and national trends are likely to impact residential and commercial real estate markets. He has published 83 magazine w w w . articles and given more than 1,050 presentations reaching nearly 170,000 people. His research findings and comments have been printed in The Wall Street Journal, Money Magazine, USA Today and Businessweek. Dr. Dotzour has also appeared as a guest on the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and regularly makes presentations at national and state conventions. Dr. Dotzour’s audiences include residential and commercial real estate brokers, bankers, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, homebuilders, construction and engineering firms, CPAs, wealth managers and private foundations. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Dotzour was president of Gleneagles Development Inc., where he developed residential subdivisions in Wichita, Kan. He also served as president of Dotzour Inc. Realtors, a Wichita-based residential brokerage firm.

Ken Root

Ag Reporter and Broadcaster Ken Root is a veteran agricultural reporter with a background in radio, television and print. He has plied his trade in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Washington, D.C. Root was the original host of “AgriTalk,” a daily one-hour talk show that focused on farming and agriculture and rural America. In 2009, Root was recognized as the outstanding farm broadcaster of the year, and received the New Holland Oscar in Agriculture in both 1983 and 2008. Root has traveled to more than 30 countries as an agricultural reporter, including a 2006 trip to Iraq with former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns. Root is host of the “Agribusiness Report” on WHOHD-TV Channel 13 in Des Moines, airing twice daily at 5:45 a.m. and 12:50 p.m.

David M. Kohl, Ph.D.

Educator and Agribusiness Expert Dr. David Kohl is a world traveler who has crossed more than eight million miles conducting 6,000-plus workshops and seminars for agricultural organizations such as Farm Credit and the FSA, banking and regulatory industries, and producer and agribusiness groups. After receiving a master’s degree and doctorate from Cornell University, Dr. Kohl spent 25 years as Professor of Agricultural Finance and Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia. He was on special leave with the Royal Bank of Canada working on advanced initiatives for two years, and also assisted in the launch of the successful entrepreneurship program at Cornell. Dr. Kohl is Professor Emeritus in the AAEC Department at Virginia Tech. He has published four books and more than 1,200 articles on financial and business-related topics in industry journals and trade publications, and is a regular contributor to Corn and Soybean Digest.

He has received 11 major education awards while teaching more than 10,000 students, as well as 18 major Extension and Public Service awards from Virginia Tech, Cornell University, and state and national organizations. Dr. Kohl is a two-time recipient of the prestigious American Agricultural Economics Association’s Outstanding Teaching Award, and only one of only five professors in the nearly 100-year history of the association to receive the award twice. He was also the youngest recipient of the Governor’s Award for his distinguished service to Virginia agriculture. Dr. Kohl has addressed the American Bankers Agricultural Conference for 30 consecutive years, and has appeared before numerous state bankers schools and conferences throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the world. He has also been named one of the top-rated instructors at the LSU and Colorado Graduate Schools of Banking. As Chancellor of Farm Credit University, he has helped train more than 700 lenders using an online and faceto-face educational approach. As facilitator of the United States Farm Financial Standards Task Force, and a member of the Canadian Agricultural Financial Standards Task Force, Dr. Kohl was one of the leaders in establishing guidelines for the standardized reporting and analysis of agricultural producers’ financial information on a national and an international basis. The Kohl Agribusiness Centre in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech was established in honor of his long-term commitment to practical teaching, research and extension. Dr. Kohl is currently President of AgriVisions LLC, a knowledgebased consulting business providing cutting-edge programs to leading agricultural organizations worldwide. He is also a business coach and part owner of Homestead Creamery, a value added dairy business in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Barry L. Flinchbaugh, Ph.D. Ag Economist and Professor

Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh is a Professor of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University. A native of New York, Penn., the soughtafter author and speaker earned a B.S. in Animal Science (1964) and an M.S. in Agricultural Economics (1967) from Pennsylvania State University, and a doctorate in Agricultural Economics (1971) from Purdue University. Dr. Flinchbaugh, who joined KSU in Manhattan, Kansas in 1971, teaches a junior-senior level course in agricultural policy, and lectures throughout Kansas and the nation on agricultural and economic policy. For four years, Dr. Flinchbaugh served as Special Assistant to the President of KSU, where he coordinated the school’s information and public affairs activities. Dr. Flinchbaugh also served for five years as Chairman of the prestigious Alfred M. Landon Lecture Series on Public Issues. He has received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the KSU College of Agriculture students on three different occasions, and served from 1984 to 2004 as the Kansas Extension Leader for Agricultural Economics.

Susan Payne

Ag Investment Expert and Advisor Susan Payne is CEO of EmVest, an ag-investment advisor operating in Sub Sahara Africa. EmVest, which regards itself as the pioneer in transforming and promoting a new asset class in Southern Africa agriculture, employees 3,500 people and operates agricultural assets in five countries.

Dr. Flinchbaugh is a member of Rotary International, serves on the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Board of Trade and the Kansas Agricultural and Rural Leadership Inc., and is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Farm Foundation. He served as Chairman of the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture, and had a hand in authorizing in the 1996 Farm Bill. His long list of professional accomplishments also includes the receipt of a prestigious Hildreth Award for career achievement in public policy education, the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award from the American Agricultural Editors Association, and the Distinguished Service Award from the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Dr. Simon Atkins

Climate Economist and Commodity Yield Expert Dr. Simon Atkins is an atmospheric scientist, a doctor of planetary risk and a climate economist. As CEO of Advanced Forecasting Corporation [AFC], a think-tank in planetary risk management, he provides climate change hazard consulting to more than 20 industries, Fortune 500 businesses, investors and other individuals who are affected by natural-based perils. Climate disasters recently have become of greater concern in strategic planning and monitoring the exposure of one’s asset classes. That is why in a world necessitating disaster threat advisement, AFC’s detailed reports in Meteorological Intelligence and climate threat hotspot predictions allow clients to gauge strengths or liabilities in their assets or investments in different market positions or economic sectors all around the world. With a wealth of knowledge gained from visiting 66 countries, Dr. Atkins truly advises on vulnerability assessment “hotspots” for optimized security planning and business continuity. With 25 years of research and work centered on strategic expertise in weather risk and global predictions going out years in advance, he gives insights well in advance of potential to likely business “shocks,” especially concentrating on shifting patterns of droughts and floods worldwide, and impacts of extremes on key commodities.

Working for more than 20 years on both the sell and buy side, Payne joined JPMorgan Chase & Co. in 1986, when she was Head of Emerging Markets Sales, Europe. In 1993, she joined Goldman Sachs International as an Executive Director and Head of Sales and Trading, and was responsible for developing its emerging markets debt business in Europe. In 1997, Payne founded Emergent Asset Management Ltd, an award-winning alternative investment firm based in the UK. In addition to its stable of hedge funds, Emergent manages the largest agricultural fund in Africa, with its local office based in South Africa. In both 2007 and 2008, Payne was listed by Financial News as one of the Top 100 Women in Finance in Europe. She was a recipient of one of eight Shell UK Women of the Future Awards in 2006, and, in 2008, was appointed a Merrill Lynch/Shell UK Women of Achievement Ambassador. Payne is on the Board of MYC4, a microfinance business focused on ending poverty in Africa. She is also a Patron of the Africa-focused charity Medial Aid Films, and Head of the London Chapter of 85 Broads, the largest professional women’s network in the world. Payne began her schooling in Vancouver, Canada, and completed it in Rome, Italy. She holds three Honours degrees, including two in law from Oxford University and McGill University, Montreal, respectively. She also studied at St. Andrews University, Scotland; University of Perugia, Italy; and University of Tel Aviv, Israel.

Stephen Kenney Institutional Investor

Stephen Kenney is a Vice President of Business Development responsible for marketing and new business development for Hancock Agricultural Investment Group. Previously, Kenney assisted with portfolio management and investment analysis for HAIG’s institutional farmland investment program.

Dr. Atkins also prepares clients concerning the multi-dimensional impact of climate change in predicting risks from earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, volcanoes, solar flare interferences, power grid disruptions, disease outbreaks, water shortages, widespread commodity shortages and price fluctuations, as well as weather’s influence on geopolitical instability, air-quality hazards, socioeconomic complexities and natural resources toxicity – all which could affect the situation on many investments.

Before joining HAIG in 2005, Kenney was a business analyst for a securities processing institution responsible for credit risk management. Prior to that, the Iowa State University graduate held banking and finance positions with Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley.

He provides specialized advisory services in the format of speaking engagements, interactive video teleconferences, strategic planning sessions, and other tailored arrangements centered on meeting the specific needs of his clients.

Kenney is a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society and Chairman of the NCREIF Farmland Committee. He holds a B.S. in Finance from Iowa State, a M.S. in Finance from Brandeis University and maintains an interest in his family’s farming operation in Iowa.
