Welcome

Hi Readers, Welcome to the March issue!

F

irst off, thank you to all our readers and clients for the Happy Birthday wishes as we celebrated our first birthday in February.

There is so much happening in Penrith this month. One event you cannot miss is the Penrith CBD’s Festival of Green. The heart of our town will be filled with food and market stalls, activities and all-day entertainment. There will be something for everyone, whether you love sports, love big boys toys, love a bit of upcycling or are into fairies and dragons. Come down and celebrate with your community and local businesses. I would also like to thank Gai Hawthorn and her amazing team at Penrith CBD Corp, who have worked tirelessly to put on such an incredible event for our community! Another event coming up that I’m sure is close to everyone’s hearts is the Annual Relay for Life that is held at Penrith Paceway on April 7-8.I couldn’t believe that this is the 17th year that Penrith has held such an event.

>> OUR TEAM

For those who have not heard about this event, Relay For Life is a fun and moving overnight experience that raises vital funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services. Every year the event gets bigger and better and it is always so well organised! This will be my fourth year camping overnight and I couldn’t encourage camping enough. It is always such a great atmosphere plus I find all the fun happens when the sun goes down. The reason why I chose to include this event in our March issue is to spread the word as early as possible, so you don’t miss out on the opportunity to be involved in this event. As always, if you have a story to tell or suggestions on how we can keep evolving this magazine, please contact me directly. samantha@roamingpanthermagazine.com.au

With over 20,000 recorded reptile owners in NSW alone, reptiles are evidently becoming a common sought-after household pet.

W

hether it be a snake, lizard or turtle, all are relatively low maintenance pets and are far less messy than a cat or dog. Reptiles don’t crave affection and are utterly content if they are left at home all day, making them ideal for those leading a busy life. And let’s be honest, whether reptiles make your skin crawl or not, there are so many beautiful species with unique colours and patterns that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Local reptile breeder Mick Arthur from Pristine Reptiles says that reptiles make fantastic pets!

BOOKINGS

I

n How I Saved The Western Black Rhino, Australian theatre maker Nathan Harrison looks at the current extinction crisis and explores the daunting complexity of wildlife conservation – along with the uplifting story of travelling to Africa to try to save one of the last Western Black Rhinos in existence.

“Bearded Dragons in particular are great for a first-time reptile owner, especially for children as they are the most tolerant reptile to handle and they seek out interaction with their owner.” For those wanting to learn more about these fascinating vertebrates or meet like-minded people, you can join a reptile society. The local society in the Penrith region is the Hawkesbury Herpetological Society which consists of individuals to help mentor and support others with

a similar passion. The society conducts monthly meetings with guest speakers and are held at the Penrith Regional Sport Centre every second Friday of the month at 7pm. The Society will also be hosting the 9th Annual Penrith Reptile Expo on March 4. It is a fantastic day out for the whole family with an array of reptiles on display from the Australian Reptile park, Canberra Zoo and Symbio Wildlife park. There will also be life size dinosaur fossils, animatronic dinosaurs, live venomous snake shows and much more. If you have you reptile license you can even buy reptiles on the day! AN EVE NING WI TH

Damien Leith Performing solo hits, favourites, lost treasures and introducing new works

I

t’s been 11 years since Damien caught the nation’s attention by performing on Australian Idol. Since then he has released eight albums, two novels and has toured extensively; performing his own compositions and of course, his much-loved versions of classic songs. A highlight of his many concerts over the years has always been when Damien performs solo – just him and a guitar or piano. It’s in those very special moments the audience get to truly feel the pure emotion of Damien’s angelic voice. In his ‘most intimate’ tour to date, Damien will perform in solo mode on a select number of dates around Australia. Audiences will get a chance to hear favourites from Damien’s eight albums; Irish classics; and songs like ‘Crying’, ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Night of my Life’ are sure to make the set-list. They’ll also get to hear sneak previews of new compositions and songs he’s written with other artists as well as lost treasures and a few new surprises.

EVENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a truly special evening with an incredible artist and, as most people say, hear the voice of an angel. “Performing solo has always been a favourite of mine as it’s how I started out. I get to chat, change up the set, bounce off the energy of the audience and really get into the raw emotion of the songs,” says Damien. LO CA L GIRL C R OWNED

Super Model of the Year Written by Cassandra Elliott

After beginning her modelling career a year ago, Adriana Maltese, a 19 year old student at Western Sydney University has won Australian Super Model of the Year for 2018.

A

driana describes the moment she won as “completely unexpected”. "The contestants were all incredible in their own way, it was so overwhelming. I just didn’t expect it at all," she says. “I was an emotional wreck,” she laughs.

“the experience was amazing, what they had planned for us was incredible”. There were four different categories in the competition; male, curvy, teen, and mainstream. Competing against 25 other girls with a range of modelling experience, Adriana’s year at Neon Model Management proved to be enough, with the competition’s official Facebook page announcing Adriana as the Mainstream Winner on February 12. “Let us introduce to you our MAINSTREAM WINNER @ adrianamaltese from Sydney! Congratulations, we cannot wait to spend the next year with you!” The Grand Final was held on Thursday, February 8, and Adriana’s mum was there to support her and congratulate her on her win.

The Bachelor of Science student has an Instagram account that caught the attention of the competition’s founder prompting her to contact Adriana. “The founder of the competition actually reached out to me and said that I have potential to enter the competition,” she says.

“They've been supportive the whole time; family, friends, community, everyone has been so supportive throughout this journey, it's incredible." The community support she received online was “just amazing,” she says. “They all just wanted me to do really well in the competition."

After arriving in Bali for an all expenses paid trip, the models participated in photoshoots with Balinese photographers, and worked with different designers daily. Along with fashion shows, catwalks and photoshoots, the models were judged on their personality, their walk and how photogenic they were.

When it comes to modelling well, Adriana says, “I think it's just a matter of being yourself, because that's what really shines in the industry”.

“It was a bit overwhelming at first because I was put out of my comfort zone a lot,” Adriana says, but

After winning, Adriana’s on her way to achieving her dreams. “I wouldn't mind walking in New York Fashion Week, that's a dream of mine, so we shall see where it takes us,” she says. As the winner, Adriana will share in over $8000 worth of cash and prizes and will continue to travel to Bali throughout the year to kickstart her modelling career on an international level.

H OPE LIVE S AT

Penrith Relay for Life In 2011, a group of friends touched by cancer banded together to form a team supporting Penrith Relay For Life.

F

ast forward seven years to 2018 and team Helping Hands has over 20 members, runs fundraising events throughout the year and has raised more than $215,000 for Cancer Council NSW. Team captain Kim Hicks said Helping Hands continued to Relay in the hope of making a difference in the fight against cancer. “In the past 12 months we’ve had two ladies diagnosed with and beat breast cancer,” she said. “Tragically, we’ve also lost two of our members, Stan Sainty and Irene McFarlane, to pancreatic cancer. “I started supporting Relay For Life after losing my father, John Bradley, to kidney and bladder cancer. I’ve lost my dad, grandparents, great grandparents and now aunts and uncles to cancer.” Each year, team Helping Hands hosts fundraisers across the Nepean to support Relay For Life. “We host games nights in January, February and March, a Christmas in June high tea at The Coffee Club, a spring high tea in October and lunch at Outback Steakhouse in November,” Kim said. “We also have craft stalls at Glenmore Park and Southlands on a two to three-monthly basis.

“Our major raffle started in June and this year the major prize is a $2500 travel voucher from helloworld Winston Hills.”

There will be fireworks and emergency services displays and food will be on sale to purchase throughout the event.

Penrith Relay For Life will celebrate 17 years in 2018 with a huge program of events scheduled for the weekend of April 7 and 8.

On Sunday morning, participants are encouraged to bring along their dogs and take the fight to cancer four paws at a time.

Cancer Council NSW Community Relations Coordinator Leanne Langdon said this year’s event at Penrith Paceway promised to be the best yet.

Teams are encouraged to sign up for Penrith Relay For Life now.

“Come and have a look around, it’s a great experience for the whole family. Sign up and walk for an hour or walk for 24 hours - it really doesn’t matter as long as you enjoy yourselves and support the cause,” she said. The family-friendly 24-hour event has plenty to keep both young and old alike entertained. An inflatable gym, silent disco and movies on the big screen are sure to be a hit with the kids, while mum and dad will enjoy live entertainment on stage throughout the day and night. The onesie and crazy hat laps are a chance to get dressed up and have some fun, while the Hope candlelight ceremony is an opportunity to reflect on those no longer with us.

Autism

AW A RE NE S S WE E K There are very few of us whom, in one way or another, are not touched by Autism. Friends, family members or colleagues, most of us know someone who is on the spectrum or has been affected by Autism. Written by Simon Gould

FOR MORE INFORMATION For more information about ASD and how you can help support the Foundation go to lukepriddisfoundation.com

I

n fact, it’s estimated that as many as one in 56 people are on the Autism Spectrum. So why is this condition so poorly understood by the vast majority of people, and why is there such intolerance? Let’s start by asking the question, what is Autism? Because of the range of conditions associated with Autism, it’s now referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD. ASD has been defined as "developmental disorders characterised by marked deficits in communication and social interaction, preoccupation with fantasy, language impairment, and abnormal behaviour, such as repetitive acts and excessive attachment to certain objects". Children with ASD can have difficulty coping with any variation to their usual routines. Unexpected or unfamiliar situations will often result in agitation and anxiety which usually manifests itself as what many may term as a "tantrum" or what we know as an emotional "meltdown". Yep, no wonder we’re confused and intolerant. Many of these are the same characteristics we associate with a badly behaved child. And therein lies a lot of the problem. Perhaps, it’s just assumed when we see or hear a child having a meltdown that they’re being a brat. Tamara Van Antwerpen is the general manager of the Luke Priddis Foundation, a Penrith based organisation providing

support, therapy and resources for those living with ASD. Tamara told us she longs for the day when a screaming child in a shopping centre is met with the questions ‘I hope that child is okay, I wonder if that parent needs help’ rather than the normal response ‘I wish someone would shut that kid up’. Tamara described ASD for us in plain English. "Very simply it means people with ASD see the world differently, process information differently and react to situations differently. People on the spectrum can be highly intelligent, of average intelligence, or developmentally challenged just like the rest of us. We’re not trying to fix people with Autism, they’re not broken. We’re giving them the tools and strategies they and their families need to flourish in our society, while at the same time helping educate to the broader community about ASD. We love their differences and around here we say ‘Difference is Magical’." World Autism Awareness Day is April 2 and celebrates the differences of people living with Autism. The Luke Priddis Foundation will host Fitness 4 Autism at Jamison Park on April 29 to help raise funds for further expansion of their Centre for Autism.

Salts of the Earth is a new local family run business that is located on Henry Street, Penrith. WE SPOKE TO ELISA WHO IS THE OWNER OF SALTS OF THE EARTH TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING ON THEIR SERVICES AND HER JOURNEY SO FAR. WHEN AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN SALTS OF THE EARTH? 1

My son and I suffered from hay fever all year round and relied heavily on anti-histamines, nasal sprays and Ventolin. I’ve always been a huge fan of natural therapies and one day I came across Salts of the Earth and considered it straight away. The nearest centre to us was Dural so we booked in for our complimentary consultation. During our consultation, the Salt Therapist explained how salt therapy works and how it could help relieve our hay fever symptoms. Right there and then I knew we were on to a good thing! We signed onto a management plan straight away and started attending on a regular basis. We felt immediate relief. I knew straight away that this was something I wanted to be involved with and that we needed more centres in Sydney. So I put in a franchise enquiry to the Salt of the Earth Support Centre and here we are today – our Grand Opening was on November 3, 2017! 2 EXPLAIN TO US WHAT EXACTLY SALT

THERAPY IS AND WHO CAN BENEFIT. Salt therapy is a natural and non-invasive therapy that can help relieve the symptoms of a wide range of respiratory and skin conditions. Salt is a natural

anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antihistamine, so people experiencing everything from asthma to eczema may experience significant and lasting symptom relief following regular salt therapy. When a client sits in one of our three salt rooms, a halogenerator grinds up pharmaceutical grade salt into minute particles that become airborne when dispersed into the room. The dry salt aerosol particles are then inhaled deep into the client’s lungs to help relieve inflammation and loosen congestion to allow easier and improved breathing. The salt particles can help to open the airways, increase oxygen intake and cleanse the airways of smoke, dust, pollutants and other allergens. When the salt lands on the skin it can also help to relieve sore, flakey, red and irritated skin. Consistency is key when it comes to salt therapy. After regular salt therapy, breathing can become easier and shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, congestion and irritated skin may gradually be alleviated. We welcome everyone from babies to the elderly into our salt centres. Relax in our communal Adults’ Salt Room, play in our fun-filled Children’s Salt Room or rejuvenate in our Private Salt Room designed specifically for those with chronic skin conditions or contagious infections. It is important to understand that salt therapy is not an alternative therapy, but a complementary one. It can help relieve the symptoms of a condition and work in conjunction with existing medication, resulting in even greater relief. 3 OTHER THAN SALT THERAPY DO YOU OFFER

ANY OTHER SERVICES? Apart from salt therapy, we have a range of natural salt therapy products. They are carefully crafted to help revive and nourish you, inside and out. They are packed full of all the good stuff, including our signature

Pharmaceutical Grade Sea Salt, which is the same as the salt we use in our centres, Magnesium Chloride, Epsom salt and Himalayan pink salt. People experiencing everything from skin conditions to those seeking exercise recovery support may benefit from using our Salt Therapy products at home. All our products contain natural ingredients, and are sold exclusively in Salts of the Earth centres. 4 TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEAM, ARE YOU A SMALL OR LARGE BUSINESS?

We are a small family business, consisting of myself and my daughter Daniela. Daniela is our Centre Operator and I undertake the role of Centre Manager and Salt Therapist. We are open seven days a week and late on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays so we can cater to everyone’s needs. 5 SINCE OPENING LATE 2017 HOW HAVE YOUR FOUND THE PENRITH COMMUNITY?

The Penrith community has been extremely welcoming. Our incredible clients are the reason I love my business. I feel very honoured to be able to help improve the health and well-being of the Penrith community every day. It has also been the support from other businesses in the area that has been overwhelming. We have made amazing connections and friends in such a short time. I owe a huge thank you to Gai Hawthorn and her team at the Penrith CBD Corporation as they took me under their wing and introduced me to the community. When you’re a new small business owner and also new to the community, this make's a world of difference. The future in Penrith looks exciting and I’m proud to be a part of it. TO BE SURE, TO BE SURE! WE’RE SEEING GREEN FOR MARCH 2018. Written by Manisha Foley – Penrith CBD Corp

M

ark your calendars because the CBD Festival of Green 2018 is coming to the streets of Penrith with a bang. At the Penrith CBD Corporation they are living, breathing and embracing everything green and loving it! "We realised how much the community missed the festival since it wasn’t on last year," says CEO of Penrith CBD Corp, Gai Hawthorn. “We had previous years' stallholders contact us to find out when they could start applying. I was happy to tell them that a festival for 2018 was in the works. And we’re really looking forward to the whole Penrith community joining us for the day too!” As with so many community events, the Penrith Festival is not only a day of excitement but it brings about networking and connectivity from local business to the consumers to the forefront. The chance to show many people from local and beyond the city of Penrith and what it has to offer is beneficial to the town’s economy and small businesses. “It brings about awareness and showcases all the CBD businesses while connecting the local businesses, charities and non-for profits too – which is our key objective for the Penrith Festival," explains Gai. “I’m always talking to the locals and there is an immense amount of pride and ownership of our town. That definitely shines come Festival day!” Even though the CBD Festival of Green is run by Penrith CBD Corp, they have a whole host of support and 20

roamingpanthermagazine.com.au

collaboration from businesses and groups around the area. Penrith City Council has always seen the value of community events and the contribution it makes to the local economy. They also recognise that it also allows visitors to make the most of our unique location, facilities and services that are on offer. “We have a strong relationship with the Council and they have been such a fantastic supporter for years. We are proud to have them sponsor the Community Stage for local singers and the free petting zoo. They also take care of road closures and waste management which is essential to a smooth running event,” says Gai. In addition to Penrith City Council, Diesel Dirt and Turf was one of the first to approach the Penrith CBD Corp in regards to partnership. “Back in 2016 when the Diesel Dirt and Turf Expo was launched, we were looking for a way to let local people know this major event was being held at Panthers. We were aware of the great success of the Penrith CBD Festival and the large numbers of visitors it attracted. This encouraged the Expo management to participate as one of the best ways to ensure the Diesel Dirt and Turf Expo was introduced to the community, explains events manager Marti Zivkovich. Diesel Dirt and Turf’s first street stall helped them to meet locals and gave the opportunity to tell everyone what they would see and experience at what would rapidly become Australia’s biggest annual earthmoving and

construction equipment event which is on April 13-15, 2017 at Penrith Panthers. “Holding an expo of this size right in the heart of Penrith makes it an important part of the community. Penrith is expanding and changing every single day. The development and growth we have witnessed in the last 10 years or even as recent as the last five years has been incredible. Our sponsorship and support of the 2018 Festival of Green recognises that local people are interested in major events and whole families love being entertained. In that way, our two events make a natural pair,” says Marti. Working together, both Penrith CBD Corporation and Diesel Dirt and Turf have major things planned for the day. In fact, they are bringing such an amazing amount of unique and large equipment and vehicles that a whole area has been dedicated to big boys’ toys and the like. And the support and sponsorships just keep rolling in. Westfield Penrith, Supremacy Funerals, Western Weekender, Vintage FM, Roaming Magazine, Stuart Ayres MP, Bunnings Warehouse, Leonay Electrical and Prima Dance Warehouse are all local businesses that are keen to get involved on Festival Day. This wave of patronage really cements the unity in the town. It’s also the attention to detail and high standard that have made each Festival such a hit with the local

ROAMING FEATURE

community. “It’s the little things that are important as the big parts to the day," says Gai. “I encourage every stallholder, performer, volunteer to get involved with the theme that we create for each year and decorate and festoon their area with branding, colour and embellishments so they stand out. It also makes the whole street look pretty amazing and eye catching.” Cute animals and local singers aren’t the only things visitors will have to look forward to. In fact the day is crammed with so much incredible displays, entertainment, food and activities that you won’t know where to look! The CBD Festival of Green has involved local talent schools which will be providing free entertainment all day. The talent grows each year and it is outstanding to see the support of families attending and all the time and effort all the schools put in. Each year PAWS principal Rebecca Liu-Brennan creates a special pantomime for the main stage. This year they’ve outdone themselves and have created “The Kingdom of Enchantment” complete with fairies, a dragon and a wizard. Parents take note! The festival is also giving a nod to Irish culture as the event falls on St Patrick's Day. One of Australia's most dynamic Celtic influenced bands, Riogh will be performing and their music will captivate and uplift the crowds. And what’s Irish entertainment without a bit of a jig? The Penrith Gaels Maher School of Irish Dancing will have award winning performers grace the stage. Local music star, Nicki Gillis will also be performing big female rock hits from the 80’s with her band The Rainmakers and Suzie Leigh from the theatre show “HerStory – A History of Women’s Rock”. Popular children’s TV show Dinosaur Train will be on stage at 1.30pm which is not to be missed by the little ones and a fantastic mix of dance schools such as KJD Artist Development, Stormer Music, Excite Dance Co, A-Live Performing Arts Centre, DanceAtion Studio and

Westside Performing Arts (who have just got back from America and will perform the finale) will be putting on a feast for the eyes and ears. And if that’s not enough, the CBD Festival of Green boasts recycle/upcycle stalls which is being sponsored by Bunnings and Wotso Workspace. Fairies and dragons with plaster painting, crafts, and an appearance by T-Rex will have the kids entertained thanks to the sponsorship of Supremacy Funerals. If you want to get physical then BOQ Penrith will be supporting the 15 metre rock climbing wall! Your tastebuds won’t be left behind either as lots of local cafés and restaurants will be setting up stalls for you to sample their delicious menus and JTA Management will be bringing a convoy of food trucks with a range of cuisines that will satisfy anyone’s appetite. Last but not least, the Festival is well known for its Street Parade. Sponsors, community groups, schools, talent schools and local businesses all participate in this extravaganza that makes High Street come alive from 12.30pm. “The activities, entertainment and food are a large and fun part of the day. I love the happy smiles and the enjoyment on the children’s faces. The amount of locals that wander through the CBD always makes me pleased because it means that we have such a strong and loving community,” says Gai. “It also demonstrates to me that we consistently aim to improve the level of events we produce every year and more and more people get to enjoy them. What was humbling was when we were a finalist in the NSW Tourism Award in 2015 for the festival and that pushes me and the team to strive for bigger and better experiences for Penrith.” A whole day of fun, food and excitement, you say? We’re ready to GO GREEN for this year’s Festival!

IMPROVE YOUR

Sleep Written by Sealy

Struggling to sleep? It could be stress related or insomnia. Sealy shares some tips to help you overcome those sleep problems.

Stress is considered by most sleep experts to be the number one cause of short-term sleeping difficulties. TIPS

CAUSES OF STRESS Stress is considered by most sleep experts to be the number one cause of short-term sleeping difficulties. Common triggers include: • School or job related pressures • A family or marriage problem • A serious illness or death in the family Usually the sleep problem disappears when the stressful situation passes. However, if short-term sleep problems such as insomnia aren't managed properly from the beginning, they can persist long after the original stress has passed. Without realising it, you may be doing things during the day or night that can work against getting a good night's sleep - lifestyle stressors. These include drinking alcohol or beverages containing caffeine in the afternoon or evening, exercising close to bedtime, following an irregular morning and night time schedule, and working or doing other mentally intense activities right before or after getting into bed. INSOMNIA The word 'insomnia' comes from the Latin 'in' (no) and 'somnus' (sleep), so it literally means 'no sleep', or the

26

roamingpanthermagazine.com.au

inability to sleep. Insomnia is an experience of inadequate or poor quality sleep as characterised by one or more of the following sleep complaints: • Difficulty initiating sleep • Difficulty maintaining sleep • Waking too early in the morning

TO HELP YOU OVERCOME SLEEP PROBLEMS

• Establish a regular bedtime routine and a regular sleep-wake schedule. • Do not eat or drink too much before bedtime. • Create a sleep-promoting environment that is quiet, dark, cool and comfortable. • Consume less or no caffeine late in the day.

TREATING INSOMNIA Fortunately, there are treatment options available for insomnia, ranging from behavioural therapy to the use of prescription medicines. Although the specific causes of insomnia differ from one person to the next, there are some general habits you can adopt that may help you sleep better. Not each of these practices may apply to everyone with insomnia, you may want to focus on one or two that seem particularly relevant to your situation. GET THE RIGHT SUPPORT Another key to great sleep is a supportive mattress. Harvey Norman Penrith Superstore has a vast range of mattresses for everyone in the family. Cnr Mulgoa Road & Wolseley Street 4737 5111

• Avoid alcohol and nicotine, especially close to bedtime. • Exercise, but not within three hours before bedtime. • Avoid naps, particularly in the late afternoon or evening. • Keep a 'sleep diary' for two weeks to record sleep and health habits; share this record with your doctor or other healthcare professional.

Being Blonde Wasn’t Built in a Day

I

Written by Amanda Wyllie

t might be a bit controversial as to whether blondes have more fun, but if that’s the case then better know the right way and process to do it (the blonde that is, not the fun!).

There are treatments such as Olaplex that help rebuild and restore broken hair bonds and allow hairdressers to push the hair a little further without the damage, but this still doesn’t mean you can be blonde in one day.

However, with extrinsic factors that Australia is very well known for (aka our sun!), as well as the dreaded teenage hormones during puberty, it is important that teenagers start a minimal skincare regime to help preserve their skin.

There will be some browny/orangy stages, but if you persevere and trust the process, we will get you where you want to be.

As children enter their teenage years, they should be washing their face twice a day with a facial cleanser. This aids in the removal of any dirt, oils and make-up residue in the pores. An exfoliant is also recommended to help smooth the skin, and a daily moisturiser – preferably one with an SPF in it. A simple skin care routine like this will help keep the skin clean, fresh and reduce blackheads and breakouts.

Be patient and love your hair.

Looking After Teenage Skin

Seeing as Khloe Kardashian is high on my love list at the moment (and I have seen her with my own eyes), what better person to use as an example - her blonde process took years to achieve! Anyone that has coloured their hair darker than a light brown and wants to go blonde needs to understand that this process takes time and any good hairdresser will not want to over-bleach your hair to get you there any quicker. If this was to happen, you would be left with unmanageable fairy floss looking hair that would feel like jelly when wet and be extremely knotty; something only a pair of scissors will fix.

must admit, I’m a bit envious of Generation Z (those born between 1995-2009). With their skin full of healthy collagen and elastin fibres and packed with hyaluronic acid to keep the skin plump and hydrated, I’m wishing I could turn back time.

Try to use products that are free of chemicals, alcohols and parabens as these can dry out and potentially irritate the skin. All teenagers would benefit from having facial treatments to deeply cleanse and unclog the pores. If blackheads or breakouts are present, a steam infusion may be incorporated into the treatment and extractions can be performed if required. Not only will a facial help their skin, but also their confidence. We want our children to feel confident in the skin they’re in!

WHY C HOOSE A

Melissa Ferrari

Couples Retreat

Psychotherapist & Relationship Expert

Don't discount it as an option to work on your relationship.

I

f you’ve not attended one before, the thought of going on a couples retreat to work on your relationship might seem a bit unnecessary or overwhelming to some people. It’s very easy to cite busy schedules or push your problems to the side in the hope they will resolve by themselves. But more often than not they don’t and that’s where a couples retreat can really help. Here are four reasons why going on a couples retreat is a good idea: 1 YOU GET TO FOCUS SOLELY ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP

In this busy world we seldom get a break from responsibilities and distractions, and dedicate uninterrupted time to our relationship. A retreat is a fantastic way to drown out the noise, reconnect with your partner and remind yourselves why you’re together in the first place. It also allows for greater

reflection after therapy sessions while on the retreat, being in a remote setting away from everyday life. 2 YOU WORK WITH PROFESSIONALS

Many couples tell themselves that there’s nothing wrong, or that time will fix their issues, but what they really need is some outside help from experts who can help work through the problems and get their relationship back on track. So many people leave relationships because it feels too difficult to work through issues. An experienced relationship therapist can help.

4 IT CAN GIVE YOUR RELATIONSHIP A GOOD SHAKE UP

It’s very easy to get caught up in the routine of daily life which can make us forget how special our partner is to us. Whether you’ve tried counselling or not, a couples retreat can be the big act that your relationship deserves to give it a much needed kickstart on so many levels. My next couples retreat is being held May 18-20 in the Blue Mountains. Spaces are limited so book now so you don't miss out.

3 IT’S AN INDULGENT WEEKEND AWAY

It can be hard to organise date night, let alone a luxury five-star weekend away, but an enjoyable and positive mini getaway might be just what the doctor ordered. With the support of an experienced therapist you can re-connect and celebrate why you got together in the first place.

Passion8 Diamond DIFFERENCE

Diamonds have been treasured for centuries; from as early as the fourth century BC they have been revered as the most precious of all gemstones.

A Jewellery With DOUGLAS ELY Designer | Jeweller

longside their hardness and durability, the sparkle of a diamond is the element that has made them so alluring throughout human history. Prior to the 20th century very little was known about diamonds from a scientific perspective. The advancement of scientific technologies has expanded our knowledge of the chemical structure of diamonds, allowing us to adapt and optimise our cutting techniques. Diamond cutting, the skill of shaping a rough diamond to optimise the sparkle, began in the 14th century. This skill has been honed and refined throughout the 20th century until we have achieved perfection. Passion8 have perfected diamond cutting by relying on a precise mathematical formula.

Cutting a stone to these mathematical proportions ensure that all light that enters the stone is reflected and returned through the crown of the stone, making it sparkle brighter than other diamonds. Fewer than 600 diamond cutters in the world are trusted to cut each stone to Passion8 perfection. If you view any Passion8 diamond at a 10x magnification it is possible to see light reflected in the pattern of eight perfect hearts and eight perfect arrows. This symmetrical light return is proof of the precision executed by their world-class diamond cutters. To impress upon you the rarity and value of diamonds; less than one per cent of diamonds are cut to Passion8 standard. The Passion8 cutting technique has been perfected on three diamond shapes. In selected retailers around Australia it is possible to get Passion8 Brilliant Cut, Princess Cut and Cushion Cut diamonds. These diamonds will perform, or sparkle, brighter than any other diamond on the market. They will also appear two to three shades brighter than other diamonds. For more information on premium diamonds and the Passion8 brand, visit York Jewellers, your local diamond specialists.

Protect a Good Idea?

Local Expert

HOW DO YOU

You have a great idea for a business - a software program, a film, an invention or whatever - and you want to protect it. But how?

Legal Expert Joseph Grassi + Associates

2 REGISTRATION UNDER THE DESIGNS ACT

If the idea can be translated into a design capable of registration under the Designs Act you can obtain protection through that legislation. But this only applies to registrable designs, so is not usually very useful.

T

he bad news is that pure ideas are not property and so cannot be “owned” or “protected”. But the good news is that you can build yourself some protections: 1

Joseph Grassi

If the idea is inventive or novel enough you can apply to patent it. A patent creates a property right on the idea for 20 years and gives you the monopoly during that time. Patents are expensive, apply only to a fairly small number of truly inventive ideas and guarantee that it will be pinched once the patent expires.

You can record the idea – by, say, writing it down – then claim copyright in that recorded media (i.e., the writing, film, software etc) called, in copyright law, the Work. This is not very effective because it only protects the physical record (i.e., the Work) from being copied, not the ideas in the Work.

(a) the information be truly confidential and not public property or in the public arena; (b) the information be communicated in circumstances suggesting an obligation of confidence; and (c) there had been an unauthorised use of the information.

3 PATENTS

RECORD THE IDEA

It is important that:

4 DUTY OF CONFIDENTIALITY

If you reveal the idea, in certain circumstances, the law will imply a duty of confidentiality on the person you tell.

Proving these criteria is not easy and may be expensive and time-consuming. By the time you get a court decision the idea’s original usefulness and value may have vanished. 5 WRITTEN AGREEMENT

You can arrange for those to whom you reveal the idea to agree to keep it confidential. This must be done before you reveal it and the agreement should be in writing so there is clear evidence of the confidentiality and obligation. So, think hard about your business ideas and be very wary of talking about them too freely.

LEA DS TO EVICTION Be mindful that your investment property requires ongoing maintenance just like your place of residence. Don't punish your tenants for bringing this to light.

T

he great Australian dream has always been home ownership. With the huge capital growth we have experienced over the last five years, more and more families are able to access their equity to build their property portfolio. In theory this is a great idea. In practice, however, many investors fail to acknowledge the fact that their investment properties require the same amount of ongoing maintenance as their principle place of residence requires.

Now, I understand that an investment is there to make you money and that sometimes cashflow can be tight but we need to get out of the mindset that we can punish tenants who are simply enforcing their legal rights. Retaliatory eviction in NSW is very clearly forbidden in legislation. However, the incidence of this occurring (and frighteningly encouraged by property managers) is rife within our community. How do I know this? Because I am approached on a weekly basis by members of our community who are on the receiving end of this treatment. As a landlord, rather than focusing on the short term financial loss (that you can claim at tax time), try focusing on the long term appreciation of your asset. Be happy that your tenant is notifying you of issues as they arise and be thankful that you are avoiding any potential lawsuits by rectifying an issue before it becomes a hazard.

Your Local MultiDwelling Builder Whether you are looking to downsize, rebuild your family home or looking for an investment, ZAC Homes proven track record with Duplex developments can unlock your properties potential. We have many duplex / triplex designs available or our expert design team can custom design to suit your individual needs.

As a tenant, if you believe that you are being evicted in retaliation make sure you apply to NCAT within 30 days of receiving the notice and fight like hell to protect your rights. The more we accept poor treatment and allow ourselves to be bullied the more it will happen to others in our community. Lastly, as agents we have a duty to act in our client's best interests. However, this does not give us the right to ignore the legislation and to treat tenants as second class citizens. Sometimes our client's best interests may not be what is demanded of you. Sometimes our client's best interest is to sit down and educate them on what property ownership entails and the long term benefits of ongoing maintenance. Yes you will lose a letting fee but it is about time our industry put morals and ethics ahead of business profits. If your agency doesn't support you in this then maybe you need to question why you are working with them.

First Home Buyer? ARE YOU A

Buying a home is one of the most rewarding financial steps you can take. If you’re ready to buy your first property, congratulations! There are a number of things you should know before taking the first step.

Local Expert Rob Lees

Lending Expert Mortgage Choice Blaxland, Penrith and Glenmore Park

DEPOSIT It’s fair to assume that you’ve been saving diligently for this purchase. What you may not know is that to improve your chances when dealing with lenders, you should aim to have at least 20 per cent of the purchase price of the property saved. An important detail here is that buying a property involves costs beyond the purchase price. You should take into account stamp duty, solicitor’s fees and more. What if you don’t have enough for a deposit? Buyers who haven’t saved a 20 per cent deposit by the time they’re ready to get onto the property ladder may need to pay Lender’s Mortgage Insurance (LMI). LMI is a one-off fee that protects the lender in the event the borrower defaults on their loan. Guarantor Equally, if you haven’t saved enough of a deposit, you could ask a parent to guarantee your loan. Simply put, a guarantor will secure the loan for you by using the equity in their home to help you buy yours.

The First Home Owner Grant Cap Those buying a new home up to the value of $600,000; entering a contract to build, or plan to build a new property themselves up to the value of $750,000, may be eligible to receive $10,000 grant. The First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme First home buyers purchasing a property may be exempt from paying transfer duty on the purchase of new and existing homes valued up to $650,000 and may receive concessions for new and existing homes valued between $650,000 and $800,000. For further detail on the scheme, contact Revenue NSW. LOANS The lowest interest rate is not always the best. Different home loans will have different features so it’s important you speak to an expert. When the time comes to choose your loan, your unique financial situation will determine which type of home loan product and or features are suited to you. SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

FIRST HOME OWNER’S GRANT In NSW, first home buyers may be eligible to a grant or stamp duty concession. If the first property you purchase is newly built, you may be eligible for The First Home - New Home scheme. 34

It’s important that with any significant financial decision you make, you do your research. Buying your first home is a tremendous achievement. As such, seek professional advice by speaking to a qualified mortgage broker who can assess your unique situation and guide you on your journey.

An important detail here is that buying a property involves costs beyond the purchase price.

Financial Detox If your spending is getting out of control and you’re struggling to get on top of it, then it might be worth considering starting your own 30 Day Financial Detox.

M

y name is Melissa Browne and I’m a chocolate addict. I’m talking ‘can’t have chocolate in the house because I’ll eat it in one go’ chocolate addict. Oh, who am I kidding, it won’t make it into the house because I’ve eaten it on the way home. From time to time I decide to give my body a break from my daily chocolate hit and eliminate all sugar for a month. Initially my body hates me. By the time I get to day five I am a walking, cranky headache and I’m sure my husband is working longer hours to avoid me. However, by the end of the month, if I’m honest, I would have to say I really don’t miss my daily fix.

Money & Business Strategy Expert Accounting & Taxation Advantage

It can be the same with my finances. While I budget for the big purchases, I find it is the whole stack of smaller purchases made over time that hurts my bank account or credit card. My solution to break the habit of almost unconscious spending is the same as it is for chocolate. About twice a year, I simply decide to go for a month without buying anything new. Now this might seem revolutionary but we base so much of our social and leisure time around buying stuff we don’t need. It might be coffee with girlfriends and a window shop, Wednesday night bored on the couch with a bottle of wine and online shopping, it might be scrolling through Instagram and quickly through to the site and click to purchase or perhaps it’s impulse items at the supermarket. It all just adds to the amount of stuff we accumulate and can over time put a sizeable dent in our bank account. As well as putting a dent into any financial goals we might have. What about you? If your credit card is bulging, if you know you’re a mindless consumer or you know it’s time for you to financially adult, perhaps it’s time for you to start your own 30 Day Financial Detox.

The 30 Day

At the end of the day you’ll have broken up with money, saved cash, found cash, sorted out super, started tracking your spending, figured out your money goals, made a plan for debt and put yourself on a great path for 2018! It’s up to you what is included in the detox. If you spend your money on stuff then make sure that anything tangible (other than groceries) is included in the detox. If you spend your money on entertainment, then make sure dinners out, alcohol and anything entertainment related is included. The detox should be personalised to you. If you decide to commit to a financial detox, I strongly encourage you to include your partner, your friends, your family or your kids and educate them on why you’re doing it. This means you’re not only setting up great habits for you but also for your family and friends and helping to make them conscious consumers too. Besides, if your friendship group are all doing this – it’s going to make it a whole lot easier for you! Melissa Browne is CEO of accounting firm A&TA and financial planning firm The Money Barre. Her latest book Unf*ck your Finances is instore now at all good bookstores.

AI Machine Learning

Local Expert

AND THE ART OF

Far from science fiction, AI, machine learning and deep learning play a large role in our lives and in directing how we spend.

In the past, we programmed computers with a set of rigid rules or algorithms.

• AI helps Google deliver your search results. • Machine learning helps Siri translate your speech. • Machine learning makes the ads relating to pages you’ve visited pop up in your timeline. • AI adds the “smart” to your TV. • Machine learning is built into most cars. • Deep learning will be used to control driverless cars.

Deep learning enhances and complements machine learning and is inspired by biology. It uses layers and layers of artificial neural networks to help a computer “see” and, for example, pick up cancer indicators in blood a human might miss.

WHAT IS AI? Artificial intelligence is about creating a machine that can solve problems.

Machine learning combines more fluid algorithms with masses of data. This allows a computer to recognise patterns, predict outcomes and make decisions – “that email belongs in your junk folder” for example. And, it gets better with use.

WHAT DOES AI MEAN IN MARKETING TERMS?

Trish Fehon Digital Expert Online Influence

• AI exponentially improves your chances of connecting with the right people. • Machine learning is what makes Google AdWords so effective. • AI is making market research faster and more efficient. • Machine learning is a great way to predict and get the jump on trends. CAN AI ENHANCE YOUR BUSINESS? If you’ve got a website and work with an SEO expert, you’re already reaping the rewards of AI developments by Google and other businesses. You can also harness the power of machine learning through a Google AdWord campaign.

FIND OUT MORE

Google, Facebook and Microsoft are among many big companies investing in AI research. This is, in part, because it can quickly pinpoint buying and search habits, hobbies and dislikes and even colour preferences.

Pisces

(20 FEB – 20 MAR)

Aries (21 MAR -20 APR) Early March gives you a boost in your ability to communicate with others. This is an ideal time for discussing more emotional matters that you may struggle with normally. You can also find yourself spending much more time than usual with your own thoughts than you would like. When this happens though, there is always a good reason. Confusion eventually gives way to clarity. Allow yourself time for contemplation, even if it goes against your natural desire for fast action. Try to override your impulsiveness later in the month when self control is a far more desirable path.

Gemini (21 MAY – 20 JUNE)

Ruling Planet: Jupiter / Neptune Sign:

This can be an exceptionally busy time in your social calendar, especially for birthdays around the 5th and 19th. Relationships and finances both come under scrutiny at the moment. The perceived problems can be much greater in your mind than than they are in reality, so try not to react to quickly. Instead, it is better to make sure you have all the facts. From mid month onward, you should feel a burst of new found energy, especially for those with birthdays around the 21st. This could be put to good use developing new skills or at least opening your mind to new ideas.

Cancer (21 JUN – 22 JUL) Take time early in the month for a deep breath. Stop and smell the roses , or any other idiom referencing the need to slow down and take respite. By the 7th things are moving in the career sector, especially June birthdays. Communicating clearly is of paramount importance now. This means honing your listening skills as well as talking. Communication is a two way street. Relationships may have been stagnating of late, this will change from the New Moon on the 18th. Expect a shake up in this area and for some, this kitchen can get very hot.

This is your annual time for renewal. Happy Solar return Pisces. The saying ‘Many Happy Returns’ is a reference to the sun returning each year to the same area in the sky that it was at the time of birth. For Pisces this year, that is from February 19-March 21 and covers all those born under the sign of the Fish. The coming month will give you a snapshot of the year ahead. Pay attention to what is going on around your birthday for clues. Relationships seem to be the biggest factor for most Pisces over the coming year. This is especially so for those born February. Early March Pisces have the spot light turned up full on relationships, time to take of the rose coloured glasses and see the reality, for better or for worse. This is not a bad thing so don’t be afraid. It is generally a positive year ahead for Pisces. Mid to late sign birthdays have more focus on the self, a good year for doing self improvement. Finances can still be a up and down but overall should be on the improve.

Sagittarius (22 NOV – 21 DEC) You have been feeling quite energised of late, at the very least had increased energy levels. This can become quite hyper around the 11th and something or somebody certainly has you excited. This will be especially noticeable for birthdays around the 16th. This is a positive energy and can assist you creating new opportunities. Home and family have taken much of your surplus energy but you are not unhappy about this. You do not enjoy being tied down too much but are more than happy to help out when and where you can. Remember to indulge your creative and playful side.

Focus for March is career. There is plenty of action in this sector for you and there can be choices you need to make. Problem is you can feel quite confused about your options. Birthdays around the 5th can feel particularly hesitant and think their heard is full of fog, or mashed potato. Always when feeling like this way around options, it is important to get all the facts. Once you have all the information the fog should clear. Don’t rush, take your time and make a choice you will be happy with for the long term.

Taurus (21 APR - 20 MAY)

Leo (23 JUL – 22 AUG) You may be spending way too much time daydreaming of distant lands and wishing you were anywhere other than where you are. Stop daydreaming, it’s time to start taking action. You can live in your head, but is it really living? There is so much to see and do and everything begins with the first step. Work out a manageable payment plan and get planning. Even working within a tight budget allows a little daydream money. Pay the essentials and keep a tight hold on the rest and you will have that holiday in no time.

Libra (23 SEP – 22 OCT) You have been looking closer at health and wellbeing, if not, maybe you should. Early March can reveal the cause of something that has been niggling for a while. There may be initial difficulty in getting the bottom of the cause but that should be corrected by mid month. Relationships receive a boost from around the 7th and for most things should be quite pleasant in this area for most of the next month. Lines of communication open up in a way they may not have for some time. Make the most of opportunities to reconnect with loved ones.

Capricorn (22 DEC – 20 JAN) Relationships can be a key factor early in the month. More particularly it can be the way you communicate, or don’t. December Capricorns have been experiencing somewhat of a reality check of late. If you feel life is getting too heavy, maybe you need to lighten up. Give yourself a break. Mid month on should see an increase in energy levels. Try not to go overboard, resulting in feelings of frustration or anger when you can’t get things to move as quickly as you would like. Home can be a safe refuge to let off steam, just make sure it isn’t pointing at anyone.

Virgo (23 AUG -22 SEP) Valentine’s day may have come and gone but you can still be feeling quite romantic early in the month. For some this may not be based in reality, so listen to those close to you if they voice genuine concern, especially for early September birthdays. It is a time where there is more focus on your relationships and relating skills. Any short comings in this area are likely to be in the spotlight for all to see, but you may be blinded by the light. Mid month can see a change in direction, particularly birthdays in late Virgo.

Scorpio (23 OCT – 21 NOV) You continue to hibernate, or wish you could. You quite often enjoy your own company and while this is an admirable skill, connecting with others is equally as important and this can be your weak spot. You are feeling generally content within your own skin and this can be a contributing factor in the current desire for solitude. You are also bursting with creativity at the moment and while this may engage you in solitary pursuits, you want to share it with someone. When you are ready for this part of the process, you will need to come out of your cave.

Aquarius (21 JAN - FEB 19) Career matters continue to move in positive directions which should lead to improved finances. It is important to double check transactions early in the month to avoid errors, not in your favour. Keep a close eye on your money. Siblings or neighbours can be the cause of lost sleep later in the month. If so, try to clear your mind before going to bed. A good night’s sleep is so important and you tossing and turning all night won’t solve the problem. If you find yourself in a thought loop, find something funny or escapist to watch or read before bed.
