How two teens, all grown up, “meat” their match

They started smoking in the backyard. As classmates at Bryan Adams High School in East Dallas, the bond between Kyle St. Clair and Herman Guerra began during their freshman year. As founders of One90 Smoked Meats, smoking is now a full-time love with second-hand benefits being passed onto others daily. “We starting smoking meats in the backyard,” St. Clair said. “We call ourselves “smoked” meats because we didn’t want to get pigeonholed into barbecue,” he added. It’s definitely not barbecue. From smoked duck breast, beef and pork tenderloin, ham, turkey breast and pastrami made in house, they offer so much more beyond the norm. Smoked cheeses will have you smiling too! “Our customers are 50/50 plates for now versus take home,” St. Clair said. St. Clair and Guerra haven’t

strayed from their start-up roots. While you can swing by their establishment located at 10240 E. Northwest Highway in East Dallas, they offer prepackaged foods that can be shipped anywhere as well. The convenience of having smoked brisket, salmon, pulled pork, their house poblano sausage and more, in a simmer entire package in hot water then plate it up fashion, will have you serving dinner or pleasing guests in

no time. “Accessibility of good, smoked meats is what we’re striving for,” St. Clair said. During a recent media dinner, I honestly couldn’t help

This year, we have made a concerted effort to provide more incentives to our students and cutting-edge courses to better prepare them to become productive and contributing citizens, whether at home or abroad.” UNCF’s President and CEO Dr. Michael Lomax stressed the importance of HBCUs. “This new report chang-

es the narrative and demonstrates that HBCUs, such as Jarvis Christian College, are feeding the community’s need for a college-educated workforce and driving economic growth,” he said. “These institutions have led the way in developing and polishing the practices necessary to get underprepared, first-generation students ready for college, but they also help fill critical jobs with college-educated workers in the community.” HBCUs have long been

bastions of academic achievement. It is clear to see, however, that the value of Jarvis Christian College is not solely confined to educational impacts. HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities demonstrates that Jarvis Christian College matters not only to its students, but also to the local, regional and national economies. “To go from a backyard idea to our wives staring out into the backyard wondering what we’re up to,” Guerra laughed in amazement. With business steadily growing, it seems they’ve got the relationship between man

This study makes it clear that while benefits flow to Jarvis Christian College graduates who enter the workforce with sharper skills and vastly enhanced earning prospects, these benefits also flow to the local and regional economies connected to Jarvis Christian College. “We are excited about Jarvis and the impact we have had on the lives of our students, residents and businesses in the surrounding communities.

Although Jarvis is geographically located in a rural and serene environment, we have had a profound financial impact on the local and regional economies,” said Dr. Lester C. Newman, President of Jarvis Christian College. “Our graduates are doing well and with the addition of courses in data analytics and cyber-security, they will be prepared to do even better.” He further stated that “Jarvis has been student-centered since 1912 and that the College
